Title: Sherwood Forest Faire
Post by: rengypsy on September 10, 2008, 09:13:30 AM
Greetings from Nottinghamshire, England, circa 1189.  While the Sheriff is about his dastardly deeds of collecting taxes, harassing the common folk, and filling his coffers with more and more gold, we are about building a new Faire Grounds where folk and fay may walk at peace and enjoy the pleasures of a festive party.

Our faire grounds are being developed as I write this.

Please use your scrying capabilities to view our work and endeavors: www.swf-faire.com

We are currently seeking members of the Acting Company, Vendors of all sorts, and ideas, ideas, ideas...

The Faire Grounds will be located 35 miles east of Austin, Texas (that's a bit west of Nottingham)...on a beautifully wooded tract.  We purchased the land recently.  Approx 45 acres will be the Faire itself, whole the remaining 60 acres will be allocated for parking, camping, admin, etc.

Please become a part of a renaissance faire where the patron is the center of attention and the building of a community is a central focus.

Participants (vendors, rennies, etc) are encouraged to live on site during the festival season.

We will be Green from the start.

Saturday evening on the camp grounds is planned to be spectacular.  Impromptu and planned events.  A melding of participants and patrons after hours.

The oldest existing Pub in England will be operational during the Faire hours and also on Saturday evenings w/opening into the camp grounds.

Welcome.  Be a part of this experience.

an endeavor of the heart--the heart of a gypsy and the mind of a decent businessman, with the support of a wonderful. loving, beautiful wife who is my greatest support in this venture.

again, come and "paint your picture" upon the canvas called Sherwood Forest Faire.

I am not a vendor, not an actor, not anything but a playtron
But I am here to let you know that I will be supporting you as best I can

*And I'll lift my rum mug to ya in toast as this new faire gets off the ground!*

A month of bulldozing is finished this Friday.  We will begin construction of the front gate, the pub, & some of the fairs-owned booths.

Looking for a couple of fortune tellers, henna tatoo artists, & hairbraiders.

Also still wanting more artists,artisans,merchants.

Will be getting the flyer out soon.  Y'all will love it.  Same artist who has done the art on the website (&                    the art for the billboard on us highway 290)

We want any of u who desire to be a part of this creation!

a vision shared

i am a very blessed individual. i have had several folk approach me of late--good, decent people--who have said very forthrightly that they want to be a part of sherwood forest faire . . . not necessarily as investors, though one has offered that, as well . . . but as laborers, assistants in building/construction/design/art, etc.  or a couple have wanted to delve into business ventures as vendors for the first time, as musicians, or simply to offer encouragement and faith in the creation of the faire.

while the economy teeters on the verge of some collapse--imagined, construed, or real--there are those who wanna "hitch" their proverbial wagon to this wagon train.

humbling, inspiring

i want each of you within the sound of this cyber shout that this project will be one of a partnership and collaboration--where playtrons and actors/entertainers and vendors will have the power to effect and mold the faire's development.

as trf is about to get under way, we will all be busy selling our wares, experiencing one the best festivals in the nation.  we will walk those beautiful pine forest grounds of east texas and revel in the magic of trf.  and then as the bugle sounds taps on the last sunday in november, prepare yourself to join me around a campfire and great ale out on the sherwood forest faire grounds...as we toast the initiation of structures being constructed for the spring 2010 grand opening.

please register for updates under "contact" on the website (www.sherwoodforestfaire.com or www.swf-faire.com)

there is magic which permeates our universe...and sherwood forest faire will be a manifestation of a bit of that channeled power.

Today, Sherwood Forest Faire became the proud owner of its first piece of heavy equipment, a used 1980 ford 550 backhoe.  The grounds work continue...

Title: Re: Sherwood Forest Faire
Post by: rengypsy on December 31, 2008, 07:36:36 PM
the last week of 2008 proved quite productive for the faire development:

--water application and $16k fee paid to aqua water coop to bring a 4" water line a half mile to the property

--the design and application was submitted to txdot for the front entry off 290 into the campgrounds

--the site plan will be submitted to the county development office next week (looks good)

--approx 4/5ths of the faire grounds, proper, have been cleared completely

--a gentleman begun the grading of the grounds for the roads and paths today

--$10k for the first load of 1000 tons of gravel was paid today

still seeking artists, artisans and merchants to complete applications and submit for review.

still need to identify three food vendors fairly quickly.  one lady voiced real insterest, but no follow through...so its open for a couple of qualified folk

will be distributing brochures and posters throughout austin (and surrounding hamlets), san antonio, houston, and bryan-college station in january and february of 2009.

feb 27th, 2010 will be here before you know it.

we will need each of your thoughts and good wishes, as well as some of you spreading the word (and brochures).  help make this faire what you want it to become.

happy new year!!!

This week, the clearing for booths and back road behind the booths is being completed.
As well as the clearing for the first permanent booth circle -- with a diameter of approx 250' -- room for 45-50 booths (20x20).  Great developments!

Last weekend I nearly froze my bootie off out there and most of the pic's I took were of the mob. This weekend under sunny skies and not being rushed I returned and took my time exploring the site. With the sun shining down I could see how much shade there would be for those hot (yes we have them in Texas) February and March days and I am happy to say that even with the leaves off the hardwood trees there are enough big pines to give shade on the forest floor.

The site itself is even better looking in the sun than it was last weekend. When finished it will really look like a English Game park or a Robin Hood movie set. There is a spring fed lake that stays full year round and supplies a small creek and the future "Adult" section is the best part of the grounds as far as I am concerned. I am really looking forward to this place opening and I will return as work progresses on the site.

Took some of the flyers and handouts to our Populace meeting last night.  I was bombarded with questions.  A lot of people in our SCA Barony are extremely interested in SWF.  I probably got asked as many questions last night as rengypsy did when we drove up the the walk through in January.

Sherwood Forest Faire
A patchwork of ideas, passions, and individuals painting their respective colors upon the fabric of a wooded festival . . .
A business of conscience and values
A place where friends gather and become family around a campfire drumming circle

Thank each of you for assisting in making this faire become a reality . . . when in a year thousands will gather under the protection of Robin of Loxley and his merry men to celebrate the coming of Spring

Please pass the word on to all you can: our collective efforts will make Sherwood Forest Faire spectacular!!!

a thicket
away a bit from the village
a refuge
a hideaway
an escape
a gathering to celebrate the coming of spring
the ending of the cold of winter
a time of song and lifting up one's stein in cheer
a time of friendship and merriment amidst the burdens of life
a time to set aside the worries and woes to glory in the moment
of fellowship
commoners, merchants, peasants and nobility walking, singing, eating and gaming side by side
sherwood forest--a sanctuary for a season!

In a world of alienation
In a time when the human spirit is reduced to a number
In a moment when more is learned and less is understood
A people created the illusion of going back in time
   when things were simpler
   when relationships more honest
And they donned themselves in costume
of warriors, maidens, pirates and wenches
They drank
They played
They burned sage and beat drums
They felt the silver cord the mystics speak of that links matter and soul
They laughed and cried
and danced to set aside their pretenses for a day, a night, a weekend or a season

Some from a distanced jeered
Some from a distance made jest
but most from afar only wished they were part of the illusion

And so the gypsies wandered through the crowds
Troubadors strummed their lyres
Knights jousted on horseback
And the wenches sang their bawdy songs

A Renaissance Faire was born

it is march
and spring is about us
the flowers and trees
though wanting and needing water for sustanance
are blooming and budding
this is the time of year
when we will be celebrating the opening of sherwood
a fortress
a sanctuary
a gathering of friends and family
in a wood protected by robin of loxley
and his comrades
we will dance and sing
eat and drink
and listen to the troubadours
and watch the jesters and actors entertain
our children will play hide-and-seek, run sack races,
swing, and find themselves on stage
and we will walk the grounds
and mingle among nobles and peasants
make a purchase or two
and find our hearts festive in the moment
it is spring
we need to rejoice!

and in the year of preparation
we will build fence
erect our chapel
prepare the grounds
build a booth to sell our wares
and spread the word
of a festival made of heart and spirit
for all to enjoy

and we shall call it
sherwood forest faire

(fairies and gypsies welcome)

no, no...all is fantastic here.

spent the day with a sign painter having some 40+ signs ordered.

the obelisks for the stone circle will knock your socks off.

the wagons, carts, wheelbarrows are awesome.

tomorrow we meet with a guy about the pub's bar.  not carved, huge slab of wood.  very lord of the rings type realism for the pub bar.

the chess pieces are incredible.

cheers all.

the water line made it to the property line on friday. we should have the lines dug and pipe installed within two months, as well as electrical lines.

the billboards should be up by next week along 290.  look for them.  exciting advertising for the faire.

another stage--green woode--(the main robin hood stage) should be completed this week, as well as the fencing around the children's area.

the brush on the grounds should be off the faire grounds proper by week's end.

then the next two weeks, the bobcat operator will be finalizing the grounds for construction.  thus, in three weeks, vendors will be free to start construction of their respective booths.  generators will be required...as electricity will not be on site yet.

had quite a few more vendors at this last gathering on saturday, april 25th.

the momentum is growing.

thanks to all of you for being a part of this creation.

lots of folk attended this last outing

i'd love to hear from you on the forum of your thoughts.

it would also act as a good medium to stir more communication about the faire and it's progress.  some of the folk are still quite leary after songwood fiasco...and i'd like them to become more secure in the plans, progress and business model we are operating under with sherwood.  but, us saying it wont have the same effect as those of you who have spent time on the grounds, witnessing the development of the faire...so, help us out.

write more...and criticisms are ok too. it will drive us to rethink our ideas.

we truly want this faire to be as much a part of your creation as ours.

our billboard(s) - two -- should go up within the next week and a half
one on either side of the entry on u.s. highway 290

beautiful art work which captured the feel and spirit of Sherwood Forest Faire

www.swf-faire.com or www.sherwoodforestfaire.com

likewise, this week was very good at adding new vendors to our family
between artists, artisans, merchants, soothsayers, face painters, and food vendors
our total is close to THIRTY!!!

we want a hundred before the faire swings its gates open this next February 27th--2010

ps. we are trying to build up a wardrobe of costumes for the faire.  our efforts to get our costumes made in indonesia has been met with one chaotic fiasco.  we will accept any and all pieces of garments, accessories, for our closet--old, slightly used or new.

We are so appreciative of all your encouragement and positive energies.  We could not have moved forward as we have without you.

We hope each of you will continue to assist us with your ideas, energies, and spirits.

I think we are building this together for each other--because of each other-- because we think reality can become closer to our dreams than it is presently.

Join us on June 13th for the next outing of interested folk.

Sherwood Forest Faire was filled with a wide array of beasties this weekend--bringing in the summer solstice a bit early in fine fashion.

We in management want to send our good wishes out to each of you and let you know how very much we appreciate your time, energies and ideas offered to us this last Saturday.

Please spread the word regarding your impressions, your experiences among the enchanted woods to others here on the forum.  Folk need to hear the whisperings of the magic stirring on the outskirts of Nottinghamshire.

We are all gathering for an extraordinary experience.

Cheers,

Rengypsy

14 new vendor contracts will be mailed tomorrow.  another 6 pending approval.  also know of six more on their way...as well as a blacksmith who will setting up his forge in our woods.

all food vendors and fortune tellers and henna artists have been filled.  still accepting apps for those, but contingent upon folk dropping out.

great progress.  that shoots our vendor list over 50.  we will close the doors at 100 for the first year.

thanks for all your support.  together, we ought to make quite a show in these enchanted woods come next february.

cheers,

i remain quite humbled by this experience of working with so many of you in creating sherwood forest faire.  each day i am reminded of the extremely gracious and well-intending folk surrounding me.  this day, i was given the elgin newspaper article which spoke about the upcoming faire.  it had a picture of queen bonnie accompanying the article.  i was overcome with joy and excitement as i read the newspaper article.  you see, we did not promote it: we did not ask that it be done: we were not even interviewed for the article----but, bonnie spearheaded it all.  she even added her phone number for those needing more information about the faire.  is that not truly spectacular? ;D!!!

thank you, queen bonnie.  that each of you who have taken a sense of ownership to sherwood and are doing all you can, personally, to see that it is successful and will become everything it can . . . because of your many contributions, your myriad of artistic strokes you add to this evolving canvas.

cheers and with deepest thanks and respect,

Tis a new faire, which means you will get a mix of approaches. Some- and I have to admit that I started out in this category myself- will approach it with caution, hopeful but also mindful of having been burned in the past by other venues or faires. Others will throw themselves wholeheartedly into the faire, seeing it as a new home of sorts, and be both protective and nurturing of it. Most will be somewhere in between.

All of that being said, the number of folks in category one is dwindling, and the folks in category number two are growing, which is a VERY good sign  ;D  You've got a good bunch of folks aboard, which promises good results

vendors have starting ramping up their building of booths this week.
exciting to see our village take shape.
we are erecting a gazebo near the front gate and by where the wishing well will be constructed.
next week, a second gazebo should go up.
then around the first of september, we should start preparations for installing the Seven Sisters Stone Circle...if the stones ever clear customs.
less than 200 days now.
it's happening!!!

thanks to each of you who are helping this dream become a reality.

SQUEEE....!
I am getting so excited about Sherwood!  The August gathering was so much fun.  Rengypsy you and made such progress.  I was so surprised on how far it has come in just a few short months.

today, on the grounds of sherwood, two eighteen wheelers and a 70 ton crane pulled up.  an ocean container was placed on the ground, as well as seven obelisks which will be erected soon to become the Seven Sisters Stone Circle.  inside the container are all kinds of wares for sherwood--medieval carts, wagons, wheelbarrows, signs, wood carvings, chess set, the bar for ye olde trip to jerusalem and much more.

very big event...since the container had been held up in customs for almost two weeks and inspected by four government entities...and all is good.

so, our plan will be to have the stone circle ready for the september 19th gathering...when all our celtic, druidic and magical aspects will emerge that midnight for a most glorious drumming circle within the confines of the Seven Sisters . . . as our gypsy women will lead us all in a mystic dance to celebrate the autumn equinox...another blessing to the future of Sherwood Forest Faire.

plan to be there.  bring your family, your kids, your friends, your spirit and soul...and your musical instruments/dancing bodies.

great weekend at the faire grounds yesterday.

as always, thanks to those who have so embraced the faire and are giving of their own time to make it a success.

the camping grounds are beginning to take shape.  impressive organization by mike pullen.  kudos.

i saw three or four clans who have claimed their campsites.

more to follow, i am sure.

three vendors were building this weekend.

one started earlier in the week.

two gazebos were started this weekend my the faire.

we are committed to getting the stone circle erected before sept 19th gathering

we need some construction specialists to assist us...with logistics.  anyone capable of lending us a hand?
