This is a bit of a rant, and a bit of a request for assistance.
Our lovely local media has run stories, as usual, about the shelters in Dallas & Collin counties who are 'taking in animals displaced by the hurricane'. The problem I have with it is that they are keeping perhaps half of the animals they recieve, and calling the Humane Society of North Texas, located in Fort Worth, and begging them to come get the rest. HSNT is taking all they can, but since nobody knows that the animals are going to HSNT, the donations are not coming to them.
The media seems to focus on the drop off points, and ignores the fact that THEN, they are dispersed among all of the other shelters in the area.
They have to make hard choices when things like this happen, in order to make sure there is room for the incoming animals.
I realize that money is tight for everybody, but every little bit helps. Here's a link www.hsnt.org/donations.php
(http://www.hsnt.org/donations.php) to donate to HSNT. If you are in the area, they always need newspaper, dog & cat food, old blankets and towels. Whatever you can do will be much appreciated. If you are elsewhere in TX or in other areas that have shelters who may have taken in animals as a result of the storms of late, check with the smaller shelters and see what they may need, as they may have taken some in, but not gotten the publicity either.
Please let me know if you hear of any Italian Greyhounds displaced. Thank-you!
