Title: Dressing Noble
Post by: Celtic_Fae on September 19, 2008, 10:59:14 PM
Ok...I took the plunge and bought an outfit from RC:
Black Noble (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290258818013&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=019)

The "problem" is: I'm only ever used to dressing the basics...chemise, bodice, skirt, etc.

I have a good noble-looking hat and boots that will do. Should I buy a snood to gather up my hair? As far as actually putting on the clothes, does anything change as far as what goes on first? Usually I put on the chemise first, then skirt(s), and then the bodice. Where would the hoop fit in with this order, however?

Thanks!

My order of dressing is chemise, (corset), hoops, underskirt, overskirt, (partlet), bodice, sleeves. What style of hat will you be wearing? Many ladies do wear snoods but a fabric caul is fairly simple to make by gathering a 13-14 inch circle of fabric into a band that fits around your head. Have fun wearing your new garb! :)

This is the hat. My only question is: what do I do with my hair?

I wear a snood with my noble garb.  It is black to match my gown with white pearls sewn on it.  You can't look too rich!

How H/A do you wish to be?
In order to get the most accurate look for noble?

You need:

1. Smock -if Tudor or square necked then you would need a partlet as well
2. Corset
3. Farthingale
4. Petticoat- so the hoops don't show through your gown!
5. Optional Bumroll
6. Forepart or underskirt
7. Overskirt
8. Bodice
9. Sleeves
10. Accessories - Such as jewlery, shoes, fan, hat

If you are going to spend money on Noble Gear? Do it right I say, and look at escoffions to gather your hair under, or a caul which can be made of netting but Snoods are not in use or the term is not used until after the Renaissance.

Good Luck
Cilean

Kathryn, I bought a couple of crocheted snoods to wear with my gowns and found I don't have enough hair to make it look the way it should. So I made something in a similar shape but from black velvet. Looks more filled out than the crochet did. I'd gladly send one along to you if you aren't sure you'll like the look and don't want to spend the money on a maybe. Drop me a ren mail if you'd like.

Your hair looks fine down, very pretty, but up would give it a more "proper" look.

Believe it or not, wearing your hair up in a snood or some other fashion can help keep you cooler.

And to echo the sentiments of Mellingera on the sewing forum: "I am not overly concerned with it being completly H/A. (Quasi-HA works fine for me, I just like to feel that I'm not so off base people run from me in fear."  ;D

Would I need a snood if I went with a french hood? Well, now I can go either way, hat or hood, since I now have:
(http://i4.ebayimg.com/02/i/001/0e/34/dd9c_1.JPG) from the seller lgkdiaz on EBay.

You won't need a snood with this as the veil will cover your hair. It's pretty. :)

French Hoods... I love the two I have. I put my hair in a bun withthe front parted in the middle and the bangs (Long bangs) pulled back along the side of my head for that period look.

I'd go French Hood as they look more noble and would fit that dress beautifully.

My French Hoods have viels and I still wear a snood. It's easier for me that way.

How happy are you with the construction on this hood?
It looks better in the photo than a lot I've seen on eBay.

I was thinking that it looked great, too. She even has it displayed being worn properly (not standing up). If it looks as good in person, I'd say the seller is one to watch out for!  ;D

It seems great! And compared to the other sellers, it cost less, too! She even included some suggestions if I wanted to dress it up more.

Thanks for the update, unfortunately she has raised her price considerably. We look forward to some pictures of you wearing it.
