Title: Headwear Question
Post by: Celtic_Fae on October 09, 2008, 01:20:59 PM
What kind of hat would go well with these gowns? It doesn't have to be historically accurate---I just don't want to look like a fool.

For the top one a French Hood would look great. You could also wear a tall hat from say Tall Toad that cordinates with the colors

I'm with Lady D on the french hood on gown number one

But with the second you could wear a nice flat cap or a nice straw hat with a pretty hat band

I agree with both the ladies above on the first on about the French hood.

As to the second, you could go with the suggestion from Adriana Rose, or you could perhaps look into a tamoshanter (Tam for short), in the same style tartan, and that should take care of it.

My court gown is going to be blue velvet with blue/silver brocade. Would a black french hood suffice or should I try to find a different color?

I think the black French wood will be fine. Most but not all of the hoods in portraits were black regardless of the dress color.
I prefer a black hood myself. It goes with everything.

I agree black would work just fine. I have a black and the red for my own Katherine Parr dress. I prefer the red one as it matches, but the black looks just as good PLUS I can wear it with my blue dress which is very similar to the one you hae and have it look perfectly fine.

I also agree a flat cap/beret or a straw hat on the Scottish dress

If I may ask, where were those gown acquired?  Are either of them your creations?

I've seen both on ebay by one of the sellers there.

I'd actually braid my hair and wear it up.   However a simple snood or a french hood would work.

No, they aren't mine. They are from Forever Faire (http://www.foreverfaire.com/foreverfaire/welcome.html), who sell on E-Bay and Etsy.

up Faire Ware she made my blue and gold one. Not my favorite dress, but it is nice and is a great place to start with noble garb. Watch out for the boneing. Mine was a little long and sharp and tore open the material. I had to cut it back and sew it up. Still a nice dress.
