CLAN MCLOTOFUS 2ND ANNUAL THANKSGIVING POT LUCK DINNER

My clan will be hosting a dinner as well so I'll be eating there, but I'll be sure to stop by again and say howdy.  It was great to meet Blue (and Hubby) and DS.  Sorry I wasn't able to get over there again.  It was a busy weekend.  I look forward to seeing y'all again on another weekend.

Lefsa will be a wonderful addition.
However have no doubt in you mind that if you show up with Lutefisk you will be immediately ejected from Mclotofus' camp, and if you open the packaging of that nasty industrial waste while up wind of said camp I will personally hunt you down and terminate you wit extreme prejudice. The stink of that nasty stuff will probably force me to spend three days getting you all the way dead.
No I don't particularly care for Lutefisk. It's the one thing that has convinced me that the Norwegians will survive the cockroaches, because even they will not eat that cr*p.

Just remind him that there have been Autumnal Harvest festivals throughout every age.

Tell him this story:

In ancient Britain a corn dolly was created by plaiting the wheat stalks to create a straw figure. The corn dolly was kept until the spring. This was done as people believed that the corn spirit lived in the wheat and as the wheat was harvested, the spirit fled to the wheat which remained. By creating the dolly the spirit was kept alive for the next year and for the new crop.

There is a story about the corn dolly which is to be found in the folksong John Barleycorn. Three men swear that John Barleycorn must die. They take a plough (plow) and bury him alive. But in the spring he rises through the soil. After a while he grows big and strong, even growing a beard, so the three men cut him down at the knee, tie him on to a cart, beat him, strip the flesh off his bones and grind him between two stones. But at the end it is John Barleycorn who defeats his opponents, proving the stronger man, by turning into beer.

Start refering to TRF Thanksgiving Dinner as the "Festival of John Barleycorn", and tell him he gets to drink all the beer he wants! See if that will change his mind...   ;D

We have a 10x10 canopy and a few chairs if those would help any. . .

HEY!  I missed the starting of this thread!! Where have I been??? (Oh, yeah, avoiding the threads out of jealousy cause we can't be there every weekend.... anyway...)  I have the rum cakes in the works (one whole one "just" for Teach... but we can make his share... maybe).  Last year we brought several pies.  But it looks like there might already be several of those coming.  So I'm thinking Corny Corn Bread?  It's kind of like a corn pudding.  Very buttery.  Yeah.  What else?  Have I seen any turkeys yet? (I mean, besides YOU GUYS?)

Golly gee. I posted a message asking what I should bring and there wasn't a response.

Perhaps I should not prepare the Cornish game hens this year?

Perhaps I shall not marinade them in lemon juice and rosemary for two days.

Perhaps I shall not then deep fry them to get the crispy golden skin.

And then shall I not cleft them in twain and place them in the oven to seep in the marinade for an hour or so, along with a dallop or so of butter?

Nay, say it is not so, that none desire to partake of this delight.

You are most certainly welcome to bring them to my house, since I shall be unable to attend!!! So far today this is the only thing that has stirred my appetite at all, and I think I may need to raid the larder soon! Yummy!

Me thinks it will not be long before replies are pouring in, although many are still at faire just now.

Oh, yes! Rumballs! I had some in Chaos camp this past weekend that were the yummiest balls my tongue has ever tasted!   :P

I have 2 camp chairs I can bring, and I have a fold-up camp table that's about 3 1/2 or 4 feet long. Are we doing tiki torches?  I have about a dozen that I've collected over the years yet never used, plus fluid.

I'll probably be there around noonish? And will possibly bring various breads in a bread basket. I'll keep ye posted.

K. I looked once again and am noticing the total lack of the whole turkey thing.  SO -- we'll bring a large turkey.  We'll have to cook it Wednesday night...  HOw do you keep such a thing appropriately warm for that long without drying it out?

Large Styrofoam cooler and aluminum foil? That's all I can think of unless you had one of those plug in type coolers with the warm/ or cool setting.....

Blue, I think O'Riley and I are going to be out there for the T-Day feast. We are going to bring a home made Mac'n'Cheese casserole that I have had on every holiday. My mother own recipe.

Not sure about the camping thing that night though... Don't really know how that is happening.

All I know is that my 21st birthday is the Day before Thanksgiving and I want to come have dinner with everyone out there.

*Add* Oh, could it also be like, T-Day Dinner/Cassidy's 21st Birthday party?! LOL :P :D ;)

I know a few of Brigadoon and maybe some Valhalla peeps are going to do another T-day at camp. We had such a good time last year!! This time, I hope it wont be so rainy that I can actually get out and walk to other camps....and say hello....and nibble on some tasty dishes as I walk  ;D

Not sure yet what I am going to bring....Andy keeps hinting at fried green tomatoes...I dont even know if I can get those that time of year...

Maybe I'll just bring a pumpkin cheesecake....oh YUM!

I threw most of the cakes away I made last year.  :'( I thought nobody liked them.  ???
It was like a cake and a half that went uneaten. If I make one to bring it will be one, but I think I may be bringing rum balls as well.... ya know, since it will be the holiday season and all...  ;)
Trust me... they were liked
The number of rumcakes that I didn't like is very small
Yours is high on the list of yum though
unfortunately there was a LOT of food...... enormous amounts
Both before going (lunch with family) and then out there
I tried my best...
They really are yummy though... perhaps this year I will just skip dinner and have dessert instead

*RUMcake... it's what's for dinner!*

Awww.... me thinks Teach is trying to butter up me rum.... LOL

Alright, alright... I'll be bringing a rum cake, but it will be made with my new found love this time, not Tortuga rum but Railean, micro distilled right here on the Texas Gulf Coast in the tiny fishing village of San Leon. It beats ANY rum I have EVER put to my lips, and I will be bringing a spare bottle or two two get a second opinion or two.  ;)

I refuse to mix this rum... it would be sacrilege. It is simply that good!

Basting, injectors...mayhaps food network.com has ideas? I've heard that deep frying makes them stay juicy, but I've never used one. There's lots of dirt and open areas to lessen the fire risk.

Frying the bird is highly effective. I've done it that way quite a few times myself, and it's never been dry. Not to mention it takes only a fifth of the time of roasting!

Trill, I found it at my local Specks Liquor in Kemah. (Target shopping center on FM 2094) Other Specks may have it as well. I have not tried the white, but the dark is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I have never drank rum straight before, but this one that is the only way I will drink it! It would seem a shame to mix it! (but I am using it for the rum balls this weekend, and the rum cake for Celtic Christmas)

Dinner Thursday YES... we will be there! Two tents for us, my large one, as well as Flaming Bonsai's, then Friday I am expecting additions to my clan with two to three more tents added. I fear I have turned my mother, brother, and his friends into Rennies after this past weekend (brother and mother's first time at faire in 25 years or more) and they were so impressed and had such a wonderful time they are coming to join us for Celtic Christmas. (oh joy)  ::)

I will endeaver to ward off all chilled and foul weather for a glorious weekend. Perhaps Queen Bonnie might assist me??

Oh, and would ya'll prefer Rum Balls? Or Deviled Eggs? Which wins the majority vote?

We may be bringing the camper, or we may do a hotel- not sure which just yet.  Either way Ill have access to a kitchen so it shouldn't be a problem.

Im afraid to say that the irish foxes will not be able to make it out to closing this year, i could not get off from work and josh is going hunting. Its rather disappointing since i was only able to spend a few days with some of you, and im very thankful for the warm welcome and hospitality that was extended towards our fledgling clan.

Your name is just so darn neat I find myself during various times of the day just singing LISHY LISHY LISHY LISHY..... LMAO! Yeah, I'm a nut... but it's just a neat word to say. LOL

Follow the road to the Quick E Mart, turn left in front of the Quick E Mart and continue to JUST PAST the drum circle... between rows 8 and 10 is normally the McLotofus realm.

Im actually quite flattered, Taarna.  Lishy is a play on my given name, Alisha.  All my friends call me Lish for short, and then a few years ago someone started calling me "Squishy Lishy" and well. . . the rest is history as they say.

Im looking forward to meeting you as well.  I saw you at faire this past weekend but never got a chance to come say hello.  Part of my closing weekend persona is my "snow queen" which originally started as me attempting to be a snow fae.  Alas, the wings and I did not get along.  It has evolved into more of a snow amazon- if someone 5'3" can be considered even remotely amazonian, haha.

Thanks for the directions, I am very much looking forward to meeting you!

Odiferous is exactly what it can be if not done properly. But, on a cold night, it warms the soul something special. Considering the current weather, we likely will be needing just that! I had to break camp last night and get home...it was just too chilly for a second night. I'll have to get some more supplies so the discomfort isn't too bad in the coming weeks.

Anyway, I'm headed to faire. I was lucky enough to get the day off to explore. It's about time, too! Hanging around in the shop all day is patience trying!

I'll be one of the land grabbers Wednesday afternoon, I normally setup on row 3-4 at the Drunken Gnomes area, but this time I'll plop down in the McLotOfUs area since there isn't a Drunken Gnome or Chaos event planned for that weekend.

I'll be bringing my turkey frying rig (burner, deep pot, and 2 20 lb gas bottles), but no peanut oil. I'll also bring a 14 lb turkey (thank you Krogers) in addition to my lemon-rosemary gamehens. I've already deep fried the game hens, so all that is left is the baking in the rosemary/lemon juice/butter sauce. So if you want to fry a turkey, bring some peanut oil. A 14 lb turkey takes about 40 minutes to get to that golden state (yummmy).

We'll be having the traditional family thing here about 2ish and then hauling butt there as soon as we can leave afterwards.
We won't have any fried turkey though... and I lurves me some fried turkey, so pleeeaaassseee save me a bite of that!

Blue, Trinn can't bring banana pudding to camp... just no way to keep it chilled for transport. She has agreed to make punkin gooey buttercake. Trust me on this one... it is OMG good.
She does promise to make puddin next time we get to a McLotofus gathering though... deal?

*I will be bringing my traditional bottle of rum*

Blue and I are heading up Wednesday night with our other halves.  Even if the grounds arent open Ive volunteered to park the pop up on the side of the road.  :)

However, if someone DOES find out if the grounds will be open Wednesday afternoon/eve- that would be terrific!

Okay, I just called the TRF offices about camping on Closing Weekend.

The official word as of 5 minutes ago is that the campgrounds will be opening Thursday Evening. The lady I spoke with on the phone said that even though the website says Thursday Morning, the officers that patrol the campgrounds will be spending Thursday Afternoon with their families (as well they should).

Hmmm, so i was thinking about the Mac and Cheese casserole that I am going to make and well, I don't know how I am going to be able to keep it warm on the 3 hour drive down. I am going to visit my Grandfather during the day and have lunch with him and make the dish at his house. He lives in Rockdale about 1-2 hours east from Austin. Then I have to drive from his house with the dish and take the 71 down to Giddings then take 290 out like normal.

I also have to figure out how to make a larger serving of the dish for a 13x9 pan rather than the 9x9 that the recipe calls for....

Is any one REALLY good at cooking and can help me with the right measurements and such to make the dish as it should be? Also do we have a way to heat up those two 13x9 glass cook pans? (I am making TWO 13x9 sized dishes to be sure everyone can have some and Blue can HORD some for herself.)

I have also decided that I have to make my favorite dessert as well. It just is not the holidays with out both of these sides for me. But it is a surprise as to what it is. I know no one will have it and it can be kept cold (much easier to do than keep something hot). I checked the list of items coming and Nope no one has anything even CLOSE! YAY! Suprise! It is kinda like my own Birthday dessert to myself.

so in light of the info regarding campground opening, we will plan on arriving 10-11am on Thursday.  Instead of smoking the bird, we'll bring peanut oil and fry the thing (thanks to him who brings the fryer!).  Blue, I sent my cell number to your yahoo account.  I am SO freakin' ready to BE THERE....

Being the optimist, I'll be in line Wednesday afternoon.

Hey, if they don't open the gate Wednesday, I can survise the night in the trailer. If any others are in line with me and it gets too cold, I can put up about 4 in the trailer (1 on sofa, 1 on dining room setting, and two "really" good friends on the lower bunkbed). The queen size master bed in the tilt-out is mine, mine, mine. I have spare sleeping bags, but then again, my furnace works quite nicely.

I'll be bringing my frying rig and two 20 lb gas bottles. Someone needs to bring the peanut oil (I believe Blue will have this covered).

I'll also be bringing a 14 lb turkey in addition to my 8 Cornish game hens (which are presently cut in half in preparation for the final simmering in the lemon juice/rosemary/butter sauce).

The trailer has a microwave and oven, so I can heat up what is needed and a refrigerator to cool what else is needed. In addition, I can setup the outside gas grill with a camp oven to heat small trays. I'll try to minimize the stuff I have in the refrigerator to keep space available.

Since the microwave and oven are compact, you will have to make sure your pans are of the smaller size.

I'll be bringing some firewood, but we will need alot more if it is cold. I even bought firewood from the quickie mart last weekend (gag - 12 pieces for $10).

How many tables are being brought? I'm wondering if I need to purchase some camping tables for events such as this.

Blue has my cell phone #, in case someone needs to contact me when I am in line at the gate or once I get in Wednesday or Thursday.

We're going to try to bring some mesquite wood from here in San Angelo. . . although it will be bigger logs since we have to transport it.

We are definitely set to be in line Wed night with you mpullen.  Our pop up has a generator so we should be okay running the heat if its too cold.  I think blue's going to ride in with us as well. . .

Does anyone have a big warm beverage type thing for me to keep the spiced tea in?  (it has rum in it!)

I am really good at math and based on what I'm reading 2 13X9 vs 1 9X9, I would make three times the amount for the 1 9X9 pan and split it between the 2 13X9 pans.  Allow for additional cooking time, for instance if it needs 30 mins to cook, I would cook 40 - 45 mins.  Hope this helps.

YAY! That is what I needed! I just wanted to make sure that is everything that would be needed. I know that some times when cooking you cannot actually multiply just the amounts. you have to add time in there too.

Okay, change of plans.  Since the secret ingredient for the sweet potatoe casserole is at the moment unattainable- I shall be bringing green been casserole instead- ya know, the kind with the crunchy onion thingies on top.

Also bringin nanner puddin just fer Blue.  We have to leave the grounds thursday anyway, so itll be easy to keep it cold til we need to bring it to eat.

Cant wait to see everyone there!

I've got a good stand up smoker and Pecan wood for fire. If you want I'll pitch in the truck. It won't do 25#s at once, but I'm sure it'll handle enough in batches for the demand.

Well I dont know what's going on in Brigadoon/Valhalla on Thurs. so I am posting here, if that's alright.

Me and Andy are going to be at Camp Thurs. Last season we had a good amount of people at camp and had a good dinner and it went pretty smoothly. This season, I am now being told our camps are shooting for a Sat afternoon dinner. That's ok with me, dont get me wrong....but I dont think Andy will be able to get half a day off at his job and I'd hate for him to miss anything like this.

I'll have to read this thread all the way thru again....but what's the general consensus on the actual Thanksgiving day dinner(s) at everyone's camp?? I'd love to be able to roam around and say hello to everyone, sample some kick weed puller food you all keep talking about lol....etc.

I dont want to just wander into peoples camps if there's plans on Thurs. and all that jazz.

You should know by now that you're always welcome in the McLotofus camp! If you haven't realized that yet you better come over and get something to eat and/or drink this weekend.

Though all of our clan families may have differant names, we are all but ONE FAIRAMILY in the camp grounds. Ok, Well, with the exception of the bloody ravers... LOL

Other then that... We all have the common LOVE for Faire and the Rennie mentality, with most of us looking out for one another, and helping one another, even if we don't know one another yet.

A Rennie from another clan is simply a freind not well met yet!

Come on Brigaqueen.... wonder over and eat and drink and talk till your hearts content. WE WELCOME YOU!

I will also be bring "some" marshmallows, Hersey's chocolate bars, and graham crackers.

If you don't what these make, you have led a sheltered life.

So bring some skewers and have S'mores.

Not sure if there is going to be a ham there or not, if there is someone let me know and I'll bring a mustard sauce that is AWESOME on ham. If not I will spare the wife her delicate senses, since she hates the me smelling up the house while making that stuff (apparently she has something against cider vinegar and Chinese mustard).

I am bringing a good deal of home made stout...Does that count as part of a meal? LOL

We're not about the money. I won't turn down donations, you eat at my table for free as long as theres food. And I can usually scare something up in the kitchen if I run low. Shake your butt over this weekend and make a pig of yourself for every meal that you want.

WOOHOO!!!

I scored a boatload of wood for the camp fire bowls. Will be cutting a lot of it up on 'morrow's eve. However, I'd sure appreciate it if someone would bring a second chainsaw to camp so we can team up on what I can't get to. Some of it is rather long/big. We're talking about a 8' bed near full of all sizes....more than I could possibly get done myself after work.

I'll get what I can, but there IS too much for one Scotsman to take care of. The sheep take the bulk of the energy, 'ya know? ::)

If it isn't used up, I'll carry it all back to the house and store it for next year's run. I'll just be the official "Scot With Wood" as a title. My grandmother is trying to sell her property, and the 10 acres out there has plenty to cut from Ike's wrath.

It'll take weeks to clear it out, but hey, at least I shouldn't be sweating the pipe bags off this time of year!

I'm going to pick up a tarp/camp cover of some sort, because it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow  :o At least it won't be cold! The only soggy I want in my bread is from dipping it in stout ale!

I'm bringing a small camp table to hold the bread basket. I tried this stuffing at HEB (you know how they are with their freshly made samples) and I may have to bring some of that, if it's not sold out. OH, and I bought this chocolate popcorn from the Boyscouts that I'll bring. I'm heading to Spec's to get the 3 ingredients for this new honey drink, mixed with irish cream.

See yall around noonish!

Chocolate/Pecan rum balls are done, SECOND ATTEMPT of a rum cake in the oven now... >:(

I had a mess up too... I don't know this oven in this apartment, and have not used it often. When I used it last night I gotup at 35 minutes to check my cake (it smelled as if it were burning at supposedly 325º??) Well the darn thing had rose, and then collapsed in the middle! I have only had two cakes fall on me my entire life so needless to say I was not happy! A cup of walnuts, half a cup of Railean dark Reserve XO, among other ingredients WASTED! GRRRR!!!

Anyway, I got a temperature thermometer thingy and stuck it in the oven this morning. Spent my entire morning calibrating and figuring out how much the thing was consistantly off by and it appears it is about 25º off /higher then the set temp... so I am attempting my second rum cake, a chocolate rum cake this time.... at 300º set temp.... we'll see...

It may very well be that Teach simply is not meant to have his rum cake this year...it's a sign... LOL

Just looked at the forecast for this weekend and GOOD NEWS FOLKS!!!... the precipitation forecast percentage has dropped!!!  We are now looking at only a 30% chance of rain on Thursday and a 40% chance for Friday!  That is a 10% reduction for each day.

Whoever is doing the 'no rain dance' keep up the magic!!!  ;D

It came out BEAUTIFUL Teach!! A dark chocolate rum cake crowned with walnuts. This will be the only one I am bringing, (I WAS going to bring a golden too but because of the oven mishap it was a failed attempt)I simply do not have enough time to make another.

So Chocolate pecan rum balls, Chocolate fudge rum cake crowned with walnuts, and a tray of 50 sugar cookies fresh from Krogers bakery for those that don't consume rum...

Now just pray it makes the trip without a mishap.... LOL

Awww!!! I love you Teach, and the lovely Lady Trinn as well. I love ALL of you!! Everyone of you ROCK! Every one of you are AWESOME!! Words can never describe the fun I had this weekend, nor the wonderful memories that were made that I will cherish always.
The food was fabulous as always, the friendship was outstanding, the weather could have been a bit better (talk about your drastic changes) but I am not complaining one bit. It was all better then last year closing weekend for sure!
I had a few first for me this weekend that made it extra special... I had the pleasure of my first Scotch Egg this afternoon, I had the honor of being in the parade all three days this weekend, I got to FINALLY see Cast In Bronze live in person, and had the honor of meeting and chatting with the gentleman that performed the show afterwards.  I also had the pleasure of making the formal aquaintance of the lovely and very talented Mortianna (I hope I spelled that correctly). I caught the show in Sherwood Forest this afternoon and it was fantastic. Hubby tells me he video'd a good bit of it. I hope it came out. OH! And I not only had the pleasure of meeting the beautiful Dakota, and hearing her most exciting story for this years TRF collector stien. She also personalized it as well for us. We were very excited and felt very fortunate for this! It will be cherished always as a very fond memory.

I am sad now that it's all over. I wait, like the rest of you, all year, till this time of year rolls around and TRF opens their gates again. Although we do hope to make it to Scarby this upcoming year.
It would be my first visit if we do manage to make it. I hope it is in the cards as I know alot of you go there as well. I really don't like this "once a year" seeing my fairmily. I miss all of you already.

Thank you for a wonderful weekend, and the lovely friendships that were made, and or reinforced throughout the weekend.

I totally agree with what he said lol.  I didn't technically camp with ya but boy did I spend 90% of my time around there outside of fair from Friday on.  I had so much fun it really has been a while since I enjoyed camp that much.

I love my Chaos buds don't get me wrong but sometimes having fresh minds and um heads to play with can be quite entertaining.  :)  Although I do know many of the people at camp.  Some I can't remember where I met at *looks around for DS* ;) LOL someday we will remember.

I got home last night around 10 PM after a wonderful long day hanging out and chatting with the Naughty Jester.  Was great Hanging out with DS and Teach you know I love ya and can't wait to see ya this weekend if your going to the gathering which I assume we are still doing lol.  Vampy boobie popsicle time again lol.

Oh and getting to listen to Wine and Alchemy at camp was awesome :)

Hanging out with all of you was definitely the highlight of the season thanks for welcoming me to your camp and I look forward to getting to know those I don't.  If I forget your name however sorry Vampy brain is horrible with name storage.  Although the forum will change that giggles.  Reading names helps me remember what faces they match too ;)
