Title: Winter Exchange
Post by: rengeek77 on October 13, 2008, 04:24:35 PM
Hello all!  Haven't been on here as much as I have wanted lately, so before I get this thang going, just wanted to make sure no one else has started it?

If not, let's get this show on the road!  The Midsummer Exchange was done on kind of short notice, so now we have the luxury of an extra month to sign people up and get names exchanged...and figure out what to make/buy!

...I'll post survey answers shortly  :)

Don't be shy!  Just let it all out, we're rennies, we're used to it. :)

Okay, here we go...

Please post the responses to the questionnaire here on the forum (and if you can think of anything else that would be helpful, please do add it!  We can never know TOO much...well, wait, I suppose we actually could...but you know what I mean  ;) ).  Then please email me your forum name, real name, and mailing address to rengeek77@hotmail.com.  No need to put it in any type of Word or other format, just an email is fine!

Deadline to mail gifts out will be December 16th (that is a Tuesday...didn't want to shock you into doing something urgent on a Monday!), so that people should have them in hand before whichever holiday they choose to celebrate (remember, Festivus is on the 23rd this year...and every year).  Don't feel like you need to spend a small fortune!  I know this year has been rough for a lot of people financially.  As always, the minimum price is a stamp and an envelope.  In the past, people have received books, faire accessories, faire favors, CDs, DVDs, calendars, all kinds of beautiful hand made items...be creative!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (I cannot say please enough on this one!!!), if you think there is a chance that you will not be able to afford to do this, do NOT sign up!  Wait until May when we start our Midsummer Exchange again.  It is not fair to the person who is waiting for a gift to have their secret gift fairy back out at the last minute.  I *do* understand that sometimes unexpected situations happen after you have signed up...if that is the case, just let me know, and I will get your person rematched.  But if you are expecting to be a little short on dough this year, please do not sign up!

Just a warning...we did have one gift in the midsummer exchange that disappeared in transit (not sure if it was found?)...though USPS is generally reliable, I thought I would let you know, so that you can decide if you want to use UPS (they are actually pretty cheap if it is a light box), or at least spend a dollar for a return receipt.  Absolutely not necessary, but if you have had issues with mail before...

11. Favorite scents? (in case someone gets you candles, incense, etc.) I love warm, woody, earthy, spicy, and fruity scents...not too fond of the heavily floral smells - they usually make me sneeze  :-[ and I strongly dislike patchouli
12. Home faire and other faires regularly attended? Sterling is my home Faire, and I try to make the trip to BARF when I can - it was my first Faire and I still have family and friends who attend every year.

Hello everyone!  Just a reminder that today is the last day to sign up, midnight is the deadline (okay, if you sneak in at 12:04, I really won't notice, but you know what I mean).

Thank you to everyone who has signed up!  I am excited that we have such a big group, I am looking forward to seeing what creative gifts everyone receives.

I have not gone through yet to double check, so we may be okay on this, but just in case...if you have emailed me your information, but not posted your survey, please be sure to do so (and vice versa)!  I think everyone has taken care of both, but I have been swamped at work and have not double checked yet.  Will do so this weekend.

Okay y'all (or since we are plural, would that be all y'alls?)!  I have sent out everyone's names, so time to get creative!

The person whose name I sent you is the person you will be shopping for.  They did NOT get your name in return, so you can't try to sneak, blackmail, threaten, etc. to find out what you are getting.  :)

The deadline for mailing is December 16th--if you are going to run into ANY issues please let me know in advance and we will get things straightened out.

And yes, despite the fact that I think I called it the MIDwinter exchange in at least 6 emails, it is the winter exchange.  Just winter.  Blonde moment....

Master James -

Your gift was indeed delivered, and I love it! Not sure exactly when it came, as we were in Hilton Head all week, but it was here, when I got home. Can't wait to go show it off, and somehow it seems appropriate for the M'Crackmas festivities this weekend. Wish you could be here to see it.

Thanks again, and have a wonderful holiday!

That tis sad indeed Ottheinrich ... no clues from your gift as to whom the sender is?

And Ottheinrich's situation brings up a question for this first-timer - are we suppossed to 'tell' our person who their gift is from or is it a 'Secret Santa' type thing?

If it is a 'Secret Santa' thing - do we reveal on or after 12/15 or when our person recieves their gift(s)?

Guess I should have asked these questions when I signed up - do educate me!  I will gladly reveal whom I gifted if I should have done so already!

Fair Winds,
Emerald

In the past, it has been revealed with the gift, or after the person posts what they received.

In that case, I do need to reveal whom I was 'Secret Santa' for and hope my person doesn't shoot me for the snafu ....

I'm glad you asked that question, Emerald, as I am a newbie at this, too.

I find these gift exchanges fun and a great way to reach out to your fellow rennie/pirate/human being.  And, with each new 'Exchange' program/event, there are different rules of operation and courtesies to be met - just helpful when my brain functions enough to let me formulate the questions!  LOL.

Blame it on work - we've fired 2 nurse aides and 1 LPN for intoxication while On Call - hence all of we remaining nurses are picking up the slack in the schedule.  Uncle Sam loves me but I'm hating the lack of sleep and lack of time to do anything else (like read and post here!)

Have a good one guys - I'm off to get some rest - working the next 4 nights so won't be around much - 12 hour shifts take it out of me.

Fair Winds,
Emerald

In this economy, I'm sure ALOT of us can understand that!! I made the item I sent. I've been out of work for quite awhile, so money is non-existent for me. I did, however spend alot of time figuring out what my special person might want (read some different posts from them), and alot of time working on the gift itself.

Hey Martin -

I'm so glad you liked your present. I had the impression that you might be kind of like me - "Still trying to figure out what I am going to be, when and if I grow up." For that reason, you got toys. I just chose something I would like to have, and hoped you might like it, too.

Happy Winter Exchange, and "Here's to a wonderful and happy new year for all of us!" I love you all.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one to make the gift they sent.  It was my first effort of making said item and I was rather proud of the results.  I did add a small token made by a friend of mine also.  I love gift exchanges, but never feel I have given enough.  Just a mental thing for me.

My gift arrived.

A beautiful picture of a railroad steam engine. It's been a long time since I received such a wonderful gift.

I sincerely thank the person who sent it.

Sadly I believe it was ordered and where it was ordered from sent it directly to me. So I don't know who to thank. And they also enclosed two dollar bills to refund overpayment for postage.

If the person who sent me such a nice gift would like the money returned, please let me know where to send it.

If not, next time I see a bell ringer I'll add it to their bucket.

Thank you, and Merry Christmas !
Ferret

To whomever had my name...

I am currently visiting my parents in Alexandria, Minnesota so, I may have received your gift but it is probably being held at the post office awaiting my return.  Unfortunately, I will be returning to Texas on Dec 28th and returning to work on Dec 29th at which time I will be picking up my mail.

Just wanted to let you know, in case you might be worried because I haven't posted anything about receiving a gift from anyone! Merry Christmas!!!

I hope the person who gets it, enjoys it.

Enjoy would be an understatement.  I am taking the edible treats with me to work tomorrow.  They are fantastic!  I love nuts and the rest of the household hates them so they are all mine, mine, mine!  The candle is lovely and will probably be lit this evening for warmth if nothing else because it is brrrr cold.  I did have to negotiate reading rights with my eldest this evening since she is out of school for winter break I gave her dibs.  I can not thank you enough.

HA so Much for best laid Plans....Anyhoo, There is a Non-discript Brown Box headed west today  ;)

Tia - a wee non-descript brown box arrived today in the post.  And, I could *not* wait until Christmas to open it.  Thank you ever so much for all of the gifts!  The hair comb has been christened and worn abroad this evening (in fact I've only just taken it out of my hair since I opened the box about 4:30pm!)  I love the lotion bar - it smells heavenly!  Magnets on the fridge have been rearranged and I'm counting down the time until my next days off from work to sit down and read the book you sent - I've been wanting to start this series and now, I can!  And I shall not loose my place in said book with the wonderful cross bookmark you sent.  Lovely and delicate indeed!  And extra kudos for creativity on the map/letter!  That one is going in the scrapbook to keep!

Thank you so very much.  May you have a *very* Merry Christmas!

Emerald

Off to figure out a way to get the hair comb under the hat so she can wear it at faire as well!

You are quite welcome my friend, Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Here's hopin to see ya soon - we'll not be working Four Winds this year but I'm contemplating a 'fun' weekend trip to Scarby this spring.  To bad you and yours couldn't make the trip up next month for Scarlet's Mid-Winter Festival in OKC, OK.

Emerald,
OH I am So glad you liked everything! I wasn't sure about the book, I started the series 2 years ago and have been eagerly anticipating each new installment. I saw we share the same love of Sci-Fi/Fantasy Authors so I thought I'd take a chance.
The hair comb was an unexpected Etsy find, I figured it would be perfect for a Pirate  ;D  The book mark was made by me, if you aren't familiar with the style it is done in tatting. LOL, the letter was an interesting project, I nearly caught the house on fire ::)

I am so glad you like it all. A Very Merry Christmas to you too!

I am glad that you will get to enjoy the treats all to yourself. The Jerky if you were not aware is made here in Colorado and is a favorite of Toki and I especially when taking our many hikes.I hope you enjoy the reading. Toki highly recommends it as I have yet had a chance to read his copy but will sometime in the near future. I surely hope you don't have to rely upon the candle for heat, but a soft warm embracing light to relax by is always welcome.

You are most welcome and Happy Yule to you and your family

Blue, i just sent you an email.  Kahlan Rose, did you get yours yet?  Let me know!

So, we have at least one person stiffed on this exchange, and one person was stiffed on the summer exchange.  I would like to keep doing this (the exchanges, not the stiffing), because the majority of us put a great deal of thought into our gifts and have a great time sending them (and receiving one back!).  I don't want to put a halt to it and ruin it for the rest of us because of some people with coal for hearts (and apparently brains).  Any ideas on what we can do to prevent this in future exchanges?  Should I post names and emails and let all of you crucify them?

I am not being mean here at all, I state repeatedly in the instructions to let me know if there will be a delay or if something has come up, and we will get it taken care of.  And people have done that!  Both exchanges I had someone let me know they were late, and everything worked out.  The stiffers did not notify me at all either time...I can say right now that they are banned from future exchanges.

Any other ideas?

My giftee never posted anything about receiving what I sent, so I don't know what happened. I got an email from USPS package tracking that the package wasn't deliverable (and I think I forwarded it to you, rengeek77), but I haven't heard anything one way or the other since.

It is sad that you run the risk of people joining in to get something for free, and not follow through and stiff someone else.

One other forum I'm on quit doing the Christmas exchange because of the growing problems like this.

I wish there was an easy answer, especially so someone looking forward to their gift doesn't get stiffed.

Title: Re: Winter Exchange
Post by: Master James on February 20, 2009, 08:52:33 AM
If its a financial problem, and god knows that is possible in these days, or something else that prevents you from sending one then say something and bow out.  I'm sure the list can be shuffled to accomodate.  Don't just get yours and not send one in return as that is completely wrong.  As far as crucifying them here on the boards, as a moderator I know that this will not be tolerated however much they may deserve it.  They should certainly be banned from future ones under any user name (i.e. their mailing address should be what bans them).  I don't think we should allow PO Boxes either to prevent those from setting up a temporary one just welch on somebody but get their own.  Just my thoughts.
Title: Re: Winter Exchange
Post by: Capt Gabriela Fullpepper on February 20, 2009, 10:00:52 AM
I disagree about not allowing P.O. Boxes. I live in an apartment and UPS, FEDEC and The defunct DHL would Not leave packages on mt door (Had 8 stolen after they left and 1 was an XMAS Presant to Toki 2 years ago. So I got a PMB (Personal Mail Box) By the time I get home all four of themail carriers are closed and I cannot get my packages. While the Post Office I can go on a Saturday, I cannot for the other three,,, now two. So having a PMB is my only way to get my UPS and FedEX.

Also if items are shipped USPS then in some places a P.O. Box is all they have... no mail box just a P.O. box to which to receive mail.

All I can say about banning is the moderator the the exchange needs to not allow people who have stiffed in the past to not be allowed to join in.

I always enjoy the Winter Exchange!
I think it is wrong they received a gift and then nothing was sent in return.  :(
Maybe the next time around....limit the cost of a present to $25.00? People maybe found out, due to the financial woes, they were not able to participate? {I hope that WAS the cause!  :-\ }
Then again, they should of also let rengeek know, so a new person could of been assigned for the exchange.
I never participated in the other exchange. Will have t check that out.
