What heinous task would you drop in her lap? I ask as I thread a needle for the umpteenth time - pearling a net Italian cap. If I could just have someone pass me a threaded, knotted needle each time I tie off a "pearl", I would think I'd died & gone to heaven.

I would like my flunky to do those hand bound eyeletts, and hem.
And, gosh, since we're waxing fantastical, I would also like my flunkie to be a GUY. ;)
He would also be required to pick up any dropped (accidentally or otherwise) items, and to always wear tight jeans when helping in the sewing room.
(The Wench and Garb Diva in me are always fighting for supremacy -- in this fantasy, they both win!)
Get a complete, accurate set of measurements from a toddler.. and be responsible for test fittings of said child..
EASY: Stand here with me and do fittings. Milord is getting *very* good at it, but I hate to impose on him too much.
its not the measuring and fitting I have trouble with, it the measuring and fitting of a less than cooperative 21 month old...

For me, it would be ironing all the linen after it comes out of the dryer. I use to have male flunkies, but my brothers are now too old and live on the other side of the beltway.... :D (They'd help me fold up the gazillion yards of fabric just so I could pull it out again later and lay it perfect flat on the floor...which they'd also help with. When my youngest brother wasn't even a teen yet, he'd help cut out the pattern pieces.)
Oh to have a flunky....
He would:
~Be an expert at fitting.
~Be a champ at hemming
~Be a sport about the clean up after the sewing.
~Be just a wiz at hand sewn eyelets
~Be an expert at the art of massage, because hunching over a sewing machine all day gives a girl some sore spots. ;)
...he would scour the internet for fabric deals each day.
...he would stand in the cutting line at the fabric store.
... he would take care of all the mundane chores around the house so I could get some work done on my GARB!!!
He'd rip out that seam I just messed up on again and cut all my patterns out for me. I don't mind so much sewing them together, I just hate cutting them out.
He'd also help me with my hems, it's hard to do that alone cause I don't have a dress form so I put on the garmet, but when I look down to see the hem it gets longer so I have to guess. Very bothersome.
And I need him to get on his hands and knees with a magnet every so often to find the pins I drop.
I'd want someone to pink and slash fabric for me.
It would be grat to have someone to do all of the cutting and pinning for me so all I have to do it the actul sewing. I actually enjoy doing the handstitched eyelets, hems, etc. lol
He needs to cartridge-pleat and sew my skirts to my waistbands!!!!!
He must iron the linen and cut the duck cloth. Oh how I and my hands loath cutting duck.
I need and old fashioned military batman to look after me while I do the sewing stuff... He can make endless cups pf tea, clean up after me. run my bath, do the laundry...
Actually, what I need is a batman as a personal servant and a wife to look after the household stuff. ::) ::)
He (how did the flunky suddenly become a he? ;) ) Would pick out the stitches when I screw up. Especially if the fabric is black. He would always know where the $#&! my measuring tape went. He would wear a tool belt with all my stuff in it, plus a lint roller to take care of all the fuzzies. He would also carry a spray bottle for his work at the ironing board. He would wash my dishes and change my CD's. Hmmm...he can change the baby's diapers too, while he's at it.
And I looooove the idea of having a flunky give me backrubs. ::pops her neck:: Especially if he wears tight jeans.
Oh how I love this thread and the beautiful fantasies within!! I would definetely choose a man and one who gives backrubs too!! And this is why I'm STILL single and waiting for him to come along....
The fact is that I sort of already do have my own flunky, but sadly she's my identical twin sister and she grumbles about everything I ask of her... though she eventually does it! I.e. house cleaning during heavy sewing seasons, hyming, cutting out fabric patterns, sewing hook and eyes, and beading... tonight my flunky will learn a new task, "how to cartridge pleat" which will truly be one of the greatest ones to not do anymore...
But for all these things she does, I make her fabulous looking garb for free and even make and buy underskirts and sleeves which she can interchangably wear with her garb as well as with mine... now whos a good sissy??
He would help me lay out my patterns, entertain Little Bit, help with hemming and fitting, Give a killer back and neck rub..
hmmm now all I have to do is con the sweetie in to everything besides entertaining the monster...
My flunky would ensure that all of my fabrics are prewashed and ironed properly. He would also do all of the pinning and cutting of the patterns. He would sew the curved seams for me. He would check all of my work to make sure I had put everything together properly BEFORE I sewed it together. He would go to the fabric store to get any little thing I might have forgotten. He would rub my neck when it gets sore from bending over the sewing machine, and he would ALWAYS know where my stitch ripper was!

Ironing has a rhythm to it that I find soothing. I iron my shirt as part of my morning routine.
Laying out patterns is the kid of detail-oriented task that I enjoy.
Cutting feels too much like progress to let someone else do it.
I suppose that I could allow my flunky to pin everything together for me, although I don't really dread doing that myself.
Cleaning, threading, and adjusting the machine is probably the "manliest" part of sewing, so I'll keep doing that, thank you very much. ;)

Whenever I would visit my grandparents, grandma would put me in front of the ironing board, give me the 7-UP bottle w/the cork sprinkler & let me have at my grandpa's shirts. That fiddly ironing stuff - particularly of men's shirts - is almost meditational to me. And Grandpa preferred my ironing job to hers!
I chose a female flunky 'cause I knew nothing would ever get done if I had a hunky flunky.
Let's see my hubby I've got trained to go to the fabric store for me. If he wants out of there fast he stands in line for me while I get the notions.
The guys I sew for know if they want a happy seamstress know to give back rubs. I swear the actors of our theater group paid our yoga instructor for our classes to keep us happy. I miss that now that I'm "in the real world".
Hmm flunky for me... someone to do the laundry, fold laundry, cook, clean, and do dishes while I sew.
Hubby is my fitting note taker, problem is that i need someone else to help me fit myself.
Rani I agree with you. If you want a good flunky offer then nice garb. If they want it they have to help you make it. ;D
