I have what is probably a very stupid question... (my sewing skills are what you might call pre-beginner).....
I purchased a beautiful Irish dress off of ebay which I adore, but have found that after washing the item and wearing it a few times the grommets have pulled loose/out of the fabric, I would like to replace the grommets with bigger sturdier ones so that it will be a little more heavy duty..
My question is, can I just pull the grommets out and pound new ones on or do I need to do some additional sewing on the holes where the grommets were originally?
If you all need photos of what I am talking about let me know and I can post some tonight...

honestly what I would do would be to take jump rings and sew around them with embroidery floss to reinforce them.. this will protect the fabric and it will blend in or contrast depending on your floss choice... this is what I ended up doing when I messed up more than half of the grommets on my friend's bodice.. :(

So what you are saying is to just put jumprings around the existing grommets and secure it with embroidery floss? I like that idea!! Since not all of them have pulled loose this could save them ahead of time!!
Correct me if I am imagining this wrong in my head.. ha!
What i did, was for the ones that had pulled out all the way, i just used a jump ring for shape and stability, if the grommet had not pulled out yet, i just left it as it was and used the embroidery floss around the grommet.

I've done this too, and it held up very well, and looked much better than the original grommets. One thing to be aware of is that the lacing holes will be smaller, and you may have to go to a smaller lace.
