Title: Can spirit gum get moldy?
Post by: Kehle on November 02, 2008, 12:29:42 PM
It looks like there's a spec of mold in the bottom of my little jar of spirit gum, but I thought this jar was supposed to last me a long time. Is it really mold or something else? Is there a way to get rid of the mold without ruining the spirit gum? Should I discard this jar and just buy a new one?

If anyone else has experiences or knowledge on this, please share.

hmmm, I don't know.  I have had a jar of spirit gum for nearly 15 years (amongst about 6 little jars of the stuff), it is the same color it always was . . .

now, I am no chemist, but I would assume the gum dissolved in ether (which is what spirit gum is still) wouldn't be able to grow anything in that environ.

very odd.

That makes sense. Maybe something just dripped in there and thus is why there's a dark spot near the bottom. The bottle is brown, so it's hard to tell what color the spot really is. I'll probably keep using it anyway.

Thanks for the advice.
