Title: What Are You Thankful For
Post by: Cloverpogue on November 07, 2008, 11:56:59 AM
With Thanksgiving nigh, I wanted to post. We all post about Halloween and Christmas, but seem to sometimes skip out on Thanksgiving.  My daughter has to write a one sentence report with an illustration about an unknown fact about Thanksgiving. I yoinked my info from history.com, and wanted to share what I read there.

Also, I am thankful for my family, my daughter, my friends, and especially my Pirate Joe Bear, for even though we are miles apart, he has put up with me and still loves me no matter what, and I love him just the same.

Here are the myths and facts I found here:

Mayflower Myths"The reason that we have so many myths associated with Thanksgiving is that it is an invented tradition. It doesn't originate in any one event. It is based on the New England puritan Thanksgiving, which is a religious Thanksgiving, and the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England and maybe other ideas like commemorating the pilgrims. All of these have been gathered together and transformed into something different from the original parts."
– James W. Baker
Senior Historian at Plimoth Plantation
Myth: The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 and the pilgrims celebrated it every year thereafter.
Fact: The first feast wasn't repeated, so it wasn't the beginning of a tradition. In fact, the colonists didn't even call the day Thanksgiving. To them, a thanksgiving was a religious holiday in which they would go to church and thank God for a specific event, such as the winning of a battle. On such a religious day, the types of recreational activities that the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians participated in during the 1621 harvest feast--dancing, singing secular songs, playing games--wouldn't have been allowed. The feast was a secular celebration, so it never would have been considered a thanksgiving in the pilgrims minds.
Myth: The original Thanksgiving feast took place on the fourth Thursday of November.
Fact: The original feast in 1621 occurred sometime between September 21 and November 11. Unlike our modern holiday, it was three days long. The event was based on English harvest festivals, which traditionally occurred around the 29th of September. After that first harvest was completed by the Plymouth colonists, Gov. William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and prayer, shared by all the colonists and neighboring Indians. In 1623 a day of fasting and prayer during a period of drought was changed to one of thanksgiving because the rain came during the prayers. Gradually the custom prevailed in New England of annually celebrating thanksgiving after the harvest.
During the American Revolution a yearly day of national thanksgiving was suggested by the Continental Congress. In 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom, and by the middle of the 19th century many other states had done the same. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a day of thanksgiving as the last Thursday in November, which he may have correlated it with the November 21, 1621, anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod. Since then, each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the date for Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941)
Myth: The pilgrims wore only black and white clothing. They had buckles on their hats, garments, and shoes.
Fact: Buckles did not come into fashion until later in the seventeenth century and black and white were commonly worn only on Sunday and formal occasions. Women typically dressed in red, earthy green, brown, blue, violet, and gray, while men wore clothing in white, beige, black, earthy green, and brown.
Myth: The pilgrims brought furniture with them on the Mayflower.
Fact: The only furniture that the pilgrims brought on the Mayflower was chests and boxes. They constructed wooden furniture once they settled in Plymouth.
Myth: The Mayflower was headed for Virginia, but due to a navigational mistake it ended up in Cape Cod Massachusetts.
Fact: The Pilgrims were in fact planning to settle in Virginia, but not the modern-day state of Virginia. They were part of the Virginia Company, which had the rights to most of the eastern seaboard of the U.S. The pilgrims had intended to go to the Hudson River region in New York State, which would have been considered "Northern Virginia," but they landed in Cape Cod instead. Treacherous seas prevented them from venturing further south.

I am thankful for my family and friends, for my job, my aches and pains that i have as they let me know I'm still alive  ;D ,  for the food that is in my fridge and on my shelves, the tiny apartment that I live in, the memories that I have (both good and bad as it means my mind is still working), and I'm thankful for being able to say I'm thankful for all that I have and have had.

I'm thankful that I often can't get my kids to eat.  Most parents in the world are not lucky enough to have this problem.

I'm thankful to have a roof over my head and that Ike didn't put a tree through it.

I'm thankful to have a good husband.  He never brings me flowers or picks up his socks, but he checks the air in my tires and puts me in bed when I fall asleep on the couch.

I'm thankful that I was able to help three of my friends this week.

I'm thankful to have friends that would help me if I asked them.

I am thankful for my 9 year old stepdaughter, who tries my patience and earns my respect.

I am thankful for being given a man who loves me even though he knows the depths of my soul.

I am thankful for my parents being also my best friends.

I am thankful for my brother and sister, who are so different but still so dear to me.

I am thankful for my wide circle of family and friends, who I am truly blessed to have.

I am thankful I have so much, even when I forget that I do.

I'm thankful that I have one less month of chemo to get through.

That my daughter is healthy and happy.

That a certain pirate gives me as much attention as he can spare from his busy existence.

And that I have hopes and dreams for the future that just may be attainable.

...for things, like music or pictures or colors or a particular sense or texture or even a smell, that remind me of good times in my life... including events that go way back to when I was much younger in age, all those years ago.

mmm...what kind of hot toddy?
I found a recipe for a pumpkin pie latte and a hot mocha truffle one.
I'm thankful that cooking and baking can bring family together and happy around the holidays.

The one I make is pretty basic:  hot water with lemon extract, sweetened by honey and fortified with a splash of bourbon whiskey.  Sometimes I'll add a cinnamon stick.

Pumpkin Latte Toddy...sounds intriguing!
