Title: H/A question: early-mid 17th century
Post by: Dev on November 12, 2008, 02:25:28 PM
What did men wear under their breeches?

Did stockings worn under breeches go all the way up as they did in the renaissance or were they knee-high and gartered?

I'm drawing a picture of Rad/Ratcliffe from the Disney movie Pocahontas, translating his animated self into a semi-realistic, semi-H/A version (even if back-lacing doublets probably went out of style and I'm not sure if the seams of the stockings were on the back, I demand those stay ;p).  It's from slightly above the waist and down, posture sort of inspired by this picture (http://www.lordofevil666.blogger.com.br/shagrath_000019.jpg) (which is NSFW), where he's standing at the top of a ship's gangplank with a flint-lock rifle in his hands similarly to the whip in the domme's hands from the aforementioned picture, looking out over the Virginia horizon.

There's not much going on, so I need some little details for his clothing.

Say what you will about the movie (barely H/A) and the character (WHY???!), I have some amazing 17th century man-weed puller going on here.

Knee high or just over the knee and gartered would be my understanding -probably depending on the style of breeches. (I started out with a 17th century group) I use to wear over-the-knee hose and tie them up with a wide blue ribbon and the bow of the ribbon stuck out to show some contrasting color through the side opening in the leg of breeches just above the buttons closing the band at the bottom of the leg.

Although I'm not wearing any ribbons as garters, below is one of my early 17th century outfits.

If I'm not mistaken in the early 1600's "pumpkin pants" would have still been seen occasionally which would require high hose, but over-the knee breeches would have be more common later.
