Title: Dickens on the Strand...anyone going?
Post by: RenRobin on November 21, 2008, 08:01:17 AM
Even after Ike, it is still a go.  Is anyone going?

*waves hand* ME! I'll be there.  Most likely place to find me for certain is at a Rogues performance, a quick look at the website shows no schedule posted yet, but wherever they are performing, I'll be there.

****A note to everyone who's going**** Bear in mind that many of the acts are performing without charging their usual fees to the festival in an effort to help with recover, so the hat pass and merchandise sales are more important than ever this time around...

I'm not sure yet if we are going or not...we have something else that weekend also, so we will have to decide which we want to do.

If we do go, it will most likely be just for the day and we probably won't dress up... :(

My mother and I are attending both days, May have the hubby with me for the first time ever, and grandson with me on one day, not both. We are doing a mother/daughter thing and plan on the English Country Breakfast this year as well as one or two of the other special things they offer.
Be advised this year's DOS will be a DAYLIGHT ONLY event, as some of the props and lanterns were destroyed, and it would simply cost too much to rent such items for the event, so both days the festival will close at 6pm sharp.

Also it is my understanding the Tremont is still not open to the public as it is still undergoing repair.

We're going, bright and early Saturday! If you have any interest in this event, now is the time to come support it, and Galveston.

Yes, I think we'll be there for the Saturday.  Not sure if Lawrence will be Scrooge or if he will reprise Marley's Ghost, but he's been talking about digging old Marley up, so we'll see.  I'll be in my black Victorian outfit.  (Yes, I DO wear a hoop skirt for Dickens!)

Oh Var! Which ever Lawrence decides on we simply MUST meet up! I want pictures please!!

It has been decided for us that Saturday will be myself, mother, JP in his kilt, and grandson in his kilt. Since Dickens is a daylight only even this year, and closing at 6:00pm, we will be heading over to the Moody Gardens Festival of Lights afterward.

Sunday will just be my mother and I alone, as we are doing the English Country Breakfast, and then enjoying the rest of the day at the festival.

Well, you won't be able to miss us if he does Marley.  Ghostly face half falling off and real chains scraping along the Strand.  He had so much fun doing that for 14 years and then gave it a rest for the last few years.  No idea about specific plans, but I have no doubt we'll fetch up at the Rogues show at some point.

Thanks for the heads-up about Moody Gardens.  I forgot about that was going on.  If we can do it easily, maybe we'll go to.

I havent attended Dicken on the Strand in years.  I might just have to take a look at scheduling a day out there.  Which weekend is it exactly?

This would be a wonderful year for you to visit LadyShadow. The Galveston Historical Society needs all the help and support they can get after Ike, and this event is a big fund raiser for them.
Though things will be scaled down quite a bit this year, there will still be some wonderous entertainment, shopping, and food stuffs to be had. Think of it as Galveston returning to the roots of the festival, as it was in the beginning.  :)

How much do tickets usually run?

I know about the rebuilding process.  We will be out in Galveston for the Bike Rally helping to support the rebuilding there as well :)

I haven't been to DotS in like forever, and this looks like yet another year I'll have to miss it. Hopefully next year I'll be able to make it.

Everyone that is going to Dickens, any ideas on a meeting time / place for us?  Mrs.Zardoz was down there last week, and the Treemont House as well as most of the pubs in the Strand district that one might have suggested for a meetup seem to be closed or otherwise out of action.

Off the top of my head, and not knowing what the full entertainment schedule is, I'd say lets meet at 1 PM by the square at Strand and 23rd, where they have the opening ceremony and costume contest etc., in front of the Fuddruckers, (which I don't think is open either) on both days. what do you think?

Is anyone more familiar with the situation in that area??  Please let us know!

My Nephew's school is in the state playoffs in Football and we will be going to Waco to watch him play.
Really wanted to go this year.  :(
