Perhaps what that loathsome tripe "Enterprise" was supposed to be...I can't wait!

JJ Abrams is attempting to do with Star Trek what Russell T. Davies did with Dr. Who; take an ageing franchise, breathe new life into it, and in the process draw a new generation of fans by making it exciting, intelligent, and *gasp!* sexy.
I wish him success.
I had many, many doubts about this when I first heard about it (how can you re-do Kirk?!? or ANY of the original cast for that matter?!?). Then, I saw the trailer for it when I went to see Quantum of Solace. Now, I can't wait to see it, because it looks like it may actually be GOOD!

I haven't been following this particular project, but it does seem like there have been some movies released over the last few years where
all of the good footage was included in the trailer. ::) :D
Take Care,
David Baldock
I also saw the trailer for it when we went to see Quantum of Solace. It looks like it might be good & I think we'll catch a matinee when it comes out. (Two great things about matinees: First, there are generally fewer people which means fewer annoyances, and Second, if the movie sucks, at least we didn't pay full price! ;D 0
I second the matinee. And the fact that lately all of the good footage makes up the trailer (very, very sad). I'm really hoping that Abrams can breathe life into it, but if he does, he needs to stay on top of it. I'm tired of the let downs (Casino Royal = amazing, Quantum of Solace= eh.. yeah, I'll skip the commentary for that one).
Looks like it's worth going to see. And I may have a brand new crush on Spock...

Oh god! You too?
I have made opening day for every Star Trek film, sadly as late the best thing about them has been the popcorn and skipping work! I will be certain to make this one.
Oh, and ladies, it's the ears. Give Orlando Bloom pointy ears, call him Legolas, and he's sexier times 10.
Same thing happens to us guys. From female Romulan captians to Catwoman, pointy ears oh my!
The ultamate fantasy couple?...
The cast looks interesting. Spock is the same guy who plays Syler in "Heroes." Winona Ryder as his mom??? Simon Pegg of "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead" playing Scotty. I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing this one when it comes out.
WOW!!!!!
This looks really incredible!
Now my hopes are up that we may yet see the return of decent sci-fi to the big screen!
I will go see it, that's for sure!

Boy after seeing that trailer I second that *evil grin* but then I love his character syler in Heroes. Something about his demeanor is just Yummy :)
I've been a trecky all my life :) I'm definitely ready to see where they take it.

Are you sure it's the ears and not the low throaty voice and figure revealing clothes? ;D (Imagining the Romulan Captain with a whiney voice and bad fashion sense. ;D)
I may not make it to the theatres for this one but I will rent it when it hits dvd. I hope they get some of the old magic back.

Dreg give me a call when it comes out and we will go. Muffin no likey Star Trek.... :o ;D
Hey Bacardi, thanks for the link...higher quality image. I noticed the Vette went over the cliff! Damn you Kirk!
We are so going to this! I see a mini renvasion to a theatre near you!
*raises hand sheepishly* Can girls attend??? :P

I have no time appropriate costume. :( And yes I missed you and the wife's Star Trek garb that halloween....
Being a Trekkie myself, I for sure will be going to it. I've been watching to see more about it since the first trailer came out. Now with the new trailer showing film footage. It looks to be quite a bit more than some may have expected. Especially what with Spock not in full control of his emotions.
O.K., from "star" geek to "car" geek...Anyone else notice in the opening of the clip the Vette has it's top up but follow-up sequences have the top down? With that car there was no way to put the top down while moving as it slid under a "clam shell" cover.
Love that car. Just before it goes off the cliff you can get a glimpse of the "gills", I count three of them...'65 or '66 I think.
It's a '66. The same year Star Trek first aired.

That would certainly be appropriate!...did you read that somewhere or is there a styling que I missed?
The "egg crate" front grill belonged to the '66. At least I'm pretty sure of it. They couldn't get the continuity with the top right, but at least the year is correct.
A lot of "purists" are saying that this is a subliminal message from JJ Abrams that he's "trashing the old franchise" and starting fresh. Whatever. ::)

Oh yea, and I want to go too! I love Star Trek. Yes, big geek. Used to watch the original with my Dad.
How did I miss that Vet top.....I am usually pretty good at seeing those things.
From what I have heard he is not trying to trash the original, he make it so maybe more then us loyal Trekkie's go. Remember it is all about how much they can put into their pockets.
I was just wondering if they will mention or show Kirk's brother sense they are showing his early years?? Maybe even Finnegan from the academy days. I think that was his name. I might just be digging a little deeper then they where thinking thou.. :o

**sigh** OK, time to get my geek on...
There is a time travel plot to the story, which makes me roll my eyes. Trek has become way too dependent upon that shtick for my taste. Unless they want to trade in the Enterprise for a slightly used TARDIS, of course. :D
That being said, I doubt we'll see Finnegan, Gary Mitchell, Janice Lester, John Gill, Captain Garrovick, the U.S.S. Farragut, or any other pivotal character from the 'established history'. But it still looks like a fun ride.

I do see a listing for George Samuel Kirk, Jr., so we may see his brother. That may be the only established historical character we will see. (though I will geek out a little if Finnegan is mentioned)

Well, how about one of those uniforms with the short skirts? (Hooray, the miniskirts are back. I know I am going to like this movie.)
Quote from: Bodharan on December 07, 2008, 02:58:04 AM
Well, how about one of those uniforms with the short skirts? (Hooray, they're back. I know I am going to like this movie.)
If you have ever noticed (and you being a guy, I'm sure you have...) there is a certain type of leg that goes along with those micro-mini's that I just was not genetically gifted with... so, no, not even the short skirt, though I could possibly be talked into one of those one shoulder things that Yeoman Janice Rand wore on occasion...
So... my first real crush was J.T. Kirk... I was about 6 1/2, and still reeling from watching the moon shot about a year or so before, and discovered Trek (and James) one day after church at my great grandmothers house. I remember it so well... I was flipping through the channels on her little, fuzzy 14 in. TV, when suddenly the bridge of the USSE came into focus! Then a door slid into the wall, and through it walked this commanding man dressed in the most skin tight clothes I'd ever seen a man wearing in my short, sheltered little life!!! Immediately I knew he was in charge, and so began my enduring passion for men in uniform who wield the authority to command an entire Starship!!!
But, that was not the only epiphany I had that day...
Shortly after I developed that instantaneous fixation, onto the bridge through a different door (the corridor door, not the ready room door) walked an exotically beautiful black woman, in that now famous micro-mini skirt, who proceeded to sit at a command officer position and address the captain with such calm competence that every eye on the bridge was glued to her during her report! At that moment I knew that I, as a female, could do or be anything I could dream...
Heady stuff for a 6 year old to take in, but it changed my entire life... I know that I would be a completely different person if it weren't for those very formative events so early in my life!

What a great moment to remember! Nichelle Nichols is awesome.
I'm going!
I had the same experience, a Woman, on the Bridge, and men were Listening to her, and she was Not Caucasian!!!
I'm so white I glow in the dark, yet I was always brought up that it didn't matter what colour or gender you were, we were all the same. My dad said that it was a shame the only way it could be managed was to have it in Science Fiction (these were the days of Diane Carroll in Julia and she was a nurse, not a doctor) but that someday, people were going to be seen for their insides, not their outsides. BTW, the original pilot had a female first officer, but Paramount wouldn't go along with that, so Majel was demoted to nurse.

*wiping eyes* Oh my...I think I just guffawed..
Sadly, ST wasn't fond of casting fuller figured ladies, otherwise I'd be able to find a costume that didn't fit like an unflattering sausage skin to wear to opening night.
I was always rather fond of the flowing things that Deanna Troi's mother always wore...
Yes, I have seen every episode, of every version, multiple times...
Can you say dork??? Why yes, yes I can!
Ooooh...I like the tweaks they gave the ship. Still has the same feel, but looks a little bit snazyer. Yes, I can't spell. No, I'm not going to bother to look it up. :-P
Hmmm...I wonder where I can get a costume to wear to opening night? Not sure if that's a good idea or not, though, cuz my husband might end up having to kill people. :D
Dork (Geek, Nerd, other similar term)? Sure, but who cares, cuz we have more fun than the "cool people"!
I like the new tweaks for the ship design. Classic, but "cleaned up" a bit. I can't wait to see the other fine details that have been "modded" on the ship. Mainly, I want to see how they changed the bridge and engine room.
Was watching the newly released and remastered season 3, TOS...How did I forget this!...

Yeah, but Vanna was WAY hotter than Droxine! ;D
Jiffy-Pop dress not withstanding!
That dress is one of the hottest pieces of wardrobe on the whole series!!! Makes me look every time I see it, although she's a bit skinny for my taste...!
(curves are so much better!)
I was always partial to Nona's costume in "A Private Little War". Hell, I was partial to Nona!
Droxine was too vapid for me. Vanna was the smarter one. Gotta love a girl who likes to get dirty! ;D
You may recall Vanna had sported a similar blue number...and I prefered her "curves"...
Suddenly I need to make more popcorn...
The women were all gorgeous, we're agreed, but there's nothing quite like a man in a skin-tight uniform to make a girls pulse jump! :D ;)

I just like to tease you guys.
Rani's right, though... A line up of men in those uniforms... Oh, is it warm in here? :o
Picard? I think not! I've always been a Kirk chick.
1. When Data died, Picard had a funeral. When Spock died, Kirk reconstituted the body, forced it's soul back in, and even got him laid along the way.
2. When Picard senses that Wesley is having emotional problems he sits down and talks with him about it. When Kirk sensed that Charlie X was having emotional problems he took him to the gym and threw him around on the mats until he got over it.
3. When Picard went back in time he brought back Data's head. When Kirk went back in time he brought back a blonde.
4. Picard's Enterprise was destroyed by a couple of Klingon chicks while he was stranded on a desert planet. Kirk's Enterprise was destroyed when he blew up a crew of Klingons, stole their ship, and resurrected Spock from the dead.
5. Kirk has caused computers to self-destruct by out-thinking them on three separate occasions.
6. When Picard was in the Academy he got stabbed in the heart. When Kirk was in the Academy he beat the unbeatable Kobyoshi Maru scenario and bagged Carol Marcus in his spare time.
7. When Sisko met Picard he told him he hated him. When Sisko met Kirk he got his autograph.
8. Kirk does not play the flute.
9. Picard is from France.
10. When Picard has a problem he talks to Guinan about it. When Kirk has a problem he shoots it.
11. When Kirk screams it echoes across the entire planet.
12. When Kirk blew up the Enterprise, Starfleet built him another one and had it ready by the time he got home.
13. Kirk collects antique guns. Picard collects antique matrioshka nesting dolls.
14. Kirk chastises omni-powerful super beings for not being polite to women.
15. Kirk sword fights someone on a regular basis.
16. Kirk's Enterprise did not have a day care.
17. Kirk once ordered Scotty to fire a photon torpedo on his position and then he dodged out of the way so it hit the alien he was fighting.
18. Kirk has a violently deadly disease in his blood but he doesn't let it slow him down any.
19. When it's time for shore leave Kirk goes rock climbing and drinks whiskey. Picard wears nut smashing banana hammock speedos and reads by the pool.
20. Picard's name is known and respected throughout Klingon space. Kirk's name is cursed and vilified.
21. The only Klingon serving on Kirk's bridge would be a dead one.
22. Kirk jumps horses in his spare time. Picard owns a fish.
23. Kirk would never allow an "acting ensign" to lock out his command codes.
24. Picard quotes Shakespeare for fun. Kirk quotes Shakespeare to intimidate his enemies.

26. Kirk once made a cannon that shot diamonds.
27. Kirk defies superior alien beings on an almost daily basis.
28. When the evil aliens use a stun ray on the crew, Kirk always stays conscious for a minimum of 15 seconds longer than everyone else.
29. Kirk is on a first name basis with every single admiral in Starfleet.
30. Kirk once said: "You're the Captain's woman till he says your not."
31. When Sarek mind melded with Picard, Picard cried a lot. When Sarek mind melded with Kirk, Kirk decided to hijack the Enterprise and bring Spock back from the dead.
32. Kirk can shoulder roll at 127 miles per hour.
33. Picard's engineer wears goofy wrap-around sunglasses. Kirk's engineer wears a kilt and can drink you under the table.
34. If Picard's engineer has a headache it's because he wore his Visor for too long. If Kirk's engineer has a headache it's because he has a hangover.
35. Kirk looks good in sideburns. Really good.
36. Picard drinks tea. Kirk drinks Saurian Brandy straight from the bottle.
37. Kirk mocks Federation bureaucrats that he doesn't like and then proves that their aids are Klingon spies, just to make the point.
38. Kirk once became an Indian god with the power to resurrect the dead.
39. Kirk can beat a Vulcan at chess.
40. Kirk's love affairs extend not only across space but across time as well.
41. Kirk's dress uniform does not actually look like a dress.
42. Kirk looks good in a ripped shirt, and he knows it.
43. Kirk repopulated the Earth's once extinct humpbacked whale species.
44. When Picard wants the ship to go faster he calls down to engineering and asks to go faster. When Kirk wants the ship to go faster he sling-shots it around the sun.
45. When Klingons invaded Picard's Enterprise he carefully neutralized them. When Klingons invaded Kirk's Enterprise he had a massive sword fight with them.
46. Kirk has fought evil duplicates of himself on numerous occasions, always with screaming involved.
47. Kirk's greatest nemesis was the genetically superior ruler of over a quarter of the Earth. Picard's greatest nemesis likes to dress like him and occasionally cause inconvenience.
48. Kirk has punched out at least one member of over three thousand known alien races.
49. Kirk would never allow his first officer to get more tail than he does.
50. No matter what world Picard goes to, Kirk was there first and probably has an illegitimate child somewhere on the planet.
51. Everyone knows the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty!" The phrase, "Energize whenever you are ready, Mr. La Forge," doesn't exactly have the same notoriety.
52. Picard's first officer is named after a bathroom code.
53. Kirk once yelled, "No blah-blah-blah! No blah-blah-blah!" and made it sound important.
54. Kirk's hand phaser is sleek and sexy. Picard's hand phaser looks like a Hoover dirt devil.
55. When Kirk wants to talk to the Enterprise he flips open his communicator dramatically. When Picard wants to talk to the Enterprise he has to tweak his own nipple.
56. Kirk's youth was spent doing back breaking work on a farm in Iowa. Picard's youth was spent squishing grapes with his toes in France.
57. Kirk fought the Greek god Apollo. And won.

Ummm, Bacardi, she DOES realize she dresses up for renaissance festivals, right?
Oh, and since she's with you... geek-by-default.
Uh.. sorry to burst your dork bubble... Dressing up for renaissance festivals is a far cry from being a sad sack at a trekkie convention, standing on the corner waiting for their Mom to pick them up.. LOL!!! :D ;)
Still.... Have to love all my geeky kids... :-*
*humbly bowing to Wenchie's logic*
However, I just don't have the legs to wear a Kirk chick skirt. ;)
55. When Kirk wants to talk to the Enterprise he flips open his communicator dramatically. When Picard wants to talk to the Enterprise he has to tweak his own nipple.
LOL!!! That one really got me!

Picard? I think not! I've always been a Kirk chick.
1. When Data died, Picard had a funeral. When Spock died, Kirk reconstituted the body, forced it's soul back in, and even got him laid along the way.
Etc...
AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! OMFG!!! My neighbor just came and knocked on my door to see what was killing me over here... and I made her read this and she laughed so hard we both cried!!!
There is no doubt... Kirk is a god among men!!! Consider that officially stolen!!! WW, you are my newest hero! ROFLMAO!!!
I can't take credit for it.
It's on the web.
But it never fails to make me laugh!
Especially #30. ;D
Goes to 100. A well done bit. :)

OK, I admit it. This has been in my family since 1995. He has been hanging around my husband's industrial shop, even gracing the ceiling of the bathroom there. I guess it was a bit disconcerting....
But now he resides at home here, a bit worse for wear. Frequently he looks out my living room window.
Hey, he's more effective--and more entertaining--than Safe-T-Man.
And yeah, he is a bit of mess.
But we love him.
And that is a piece of scotch tape on his head. ::)

Hey, I use Star Wars checks from that guy!
Today, I had one of our regular customer's come in with autographed 8x10 photos of nearly EVERY Star Trek series regular cast member that he had taken himself and then had signed at various conventions. (Two of each, technically. One as the character, and one real life image.) I think he was literally only missing about 5 cast members. I about hit the ceiling when I saw these. He was making smaller copies to put in a convention travel album. I got to take each one out of its protective sleeve and do the copying for him. I considered licking the Nurse Chapel, Counselor Troy, and 7 of 9 photos, but I didn't think he'd appreciate that...(http://edcforums.com/Smileys/classic/hammer-1.gif)
Gift for understatement does not even begin to describe that last sentence!!! ::)
Probably not DB, but it would have been hard not to keep a copy of some to take home I'll bet.

Once, when I was like twelve I was grounded for disrespecting my mother and the dinner she prepared. We had "Swiss Steak" and mashed potato's (Swiss Steak in our house was a tough piece of shoe leather covered with tomato bits, onions, and God knows what, simmered in a fry pan). I swear it looked exactly like a tiny Horta. Well my "Swiss Steak" made "growling" sounds as it slid across the plate to the mashed potatos where it begain carving "NO KILL I" using a fork. Dad hated SciFi...

The movie has not come out so it is not an old thread yet Jack. ;)
It still keeps the original style with 2000 lines. I guess they are trying to get better gas mileage out of the old girl... :o
Actually I came to renfests out of attending Sci-Fi/Fantasy conventions, the idea that the new movie will be going back into the time line is exactly the sort of thing that is liable to draw the interest of all the old school Trekers as well as the newer fans as well. When I saw the preview for the new movie I started making plans to round up a few of my high school friends and made plans to see it sometime during the opening weekend. ;D
Alphonse is right about bringing the old school out of the woodwork, although some of us are a little older than the "high school friends." Now as Wench would say at this point in the conversation...."oh look sparkles!"

Looks like it's gonna suck.
NOT!
Hate to be the wet blanket, but so far this oldtime trekker is not 100% enthusiastic about this one.
I'm sure it'll be good, just not what's expected. The old timers are going to complain about canon violations, as well they should. It will be an enjoyable movie regardless, especially if I can set aside certain preconceptions that have been garnered over the decades. I seem to remember thinking TNG was the worst idea ever until after about two and a half years, turns out it's popularity far exceeded that of its progenitor.

Are You Trekkie Enough To Own One Of These? (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/bbfa/)
Whoa... :o
A space spork!
How much space pork could Spock's spork spork if Spock sporked space pork?
I want one, no idea why, just want one.
For the record, Spock is a vegatarian, he would never spork pork...he might spork a space beet, but never pork. I even believe Nemoy is Jewish, so no pork there either, but spork does not rhyme with Matzah. Am I rambling? Seriously, I don't think so but...
Updated renders, just to fan the flames. ;D

I have learned that there may be a bar at the theater our little Minnesotan's are planning to go to..... Sooooooo with that being the case I may just have to accompany my geek er I mean my fabulous fiance' to the movie.. A bar in a movie theater, what a fantastic idea!! Wish I would have thought of that!!

Spock ears? What?
That spork is awesome. I may have to buy a couple of those. Sadly, it will likely be useless as a collectors item after I do that because I would totally use it on camping trips.
Costumes? Oh crap, this movie is just over a week away, and I don't have anything to wear! eek! I might have to look at how hard it would be to turn the very oversized commander shirt I have into a dress. It's probably about the right length...gosh those dresses are short! Guess I'd have to be a command track officer if I did that, even though I wanted to be an engineer. Oh well.
Let me join you in rambling. ;)
Why do I have an oversized Trek shirt, you ask? Because the store was having a pre-halloween sale, to clean out all the old costumes and had a bag w/an old-school AND an NG shirt stuffed in it that they were practically giving away. Little middleschool(? maybe I had just started highschool) geek that I was couldn't pass it up. :) I wore the (equally too large) NG shirt for halloween that year and had everyone think I was captain Janeway, even though I was CLEARLY wearing commander's pips, not captain's. :-\
yes, I am that much of a geek... ;D

How Jinx convinced her anti-Star Trek best friend to go see Star Trek with her:
1- IMDB the movie.
2- Pick out the handsomest men on cast.
3- Say "I'll give you three reasons you can't refuse."
4- Proceed thusly: "Kirk. Spock. Nero."
5- Epic win.
My wife saw it at Saturdays sneak preview, (from my reserved seats! I had to work :( ) and she thought it was really great, wants to see it again. Shelley takes her Trek pretty seriously, so thats a good endorsment. She's not telling me about it too much, and I still have some resevations, but I'll wait till I see it to comment.

Sweet! I know where I'm going after work!
I'll pass on the Spork! It is pricy!
But this is the first movie I have wanted to see in ages!I ADORED the original Star Trek! I even have the garb! Old Rubies Halloween costume from a Long time ago- in a galaxy far away! Oops Wrong movie!LOL!
I have tickets to Star Trek for tonight at 7pm with the new guy I'm dating! I'm so super excited about it!!!
QuoteI have tickets to Star Trek for tonight at 7pm with the new guy I'm dating! I'm so super excited about it!!!
About the guy or the movie?
DD#1 and I leave in an hour to catch the 10pm showing in IMAX. My kids are surprised I am so enthusiastic about the movie. It has gorgeous people, even better spaceships and lots of things to go BOOM - what more do you need! And it's about time they got back to the Enterprise crew I grew up with! Who needs diplomacy when you have a fully charged phaser bank? ;D
(Scary thing #1: the guy playing Kirk is only 2 years older than my DD#1. Sigh. When did I get old enough to be Kirk's mom?)
So I was excited about both really and both fully inspired and thrilled me last night!!
The writers must have spent long hours on the script, because they got each character spot on. My daughter (age 26) said, on the drive home, "I've never paid much attention to TOS, but we need to rent it. I loved the characters." Perfect.
I'm going to go see it after work today. Would have tried to see it last night, but my husband had to get up for work at 4:30am today. o.O
Sadly, I ran out of time to do anything about a costume, so I"m stuck w/the oversized shirt. Might still wear that, if it doesn't look too bad.
Either way, I'm very excited, and based on the comments of the people who have already seen it, I won't be disappointed.
;D ;D ;D
Saw it last night on the IMAX...all I have to say is..... FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!
I will be going again this weekend more than likely...
*crosses fingers* I'm now just praying I manage to see it while it's still in theatres! D: Stupid lack of employment!
Enjoyable...I would say more but don't want to give anything away for those who have not seen it yet. I will say it almost makes up for the drudgery of "Enterprise" and "Voyager". Very well casted!
Wow...
Sitting in the IMAX with friends, drinking a double rum and coke I was just blown away...
Not giving anything away, but the characters are just dead one... perfect casting
I Loved the look of the new ship (Sorry Killian... but I liked it lol)
Great prequel type story (there were some changes in the history... but I can deal with that)
Wow...
I went in semi-worried that they would screw up something from my childhood, nope... only made it better
I am ready for some sequels in this Star Trek universe storyline
*Having a double rum and coke was a nice bonus... I love theatres with bars*
Well I saw Star Trek and didn't like it at all because they changed the storyline too much from star trek cannon.

Those are little tiny things but when you watch the movie you will see HUGE HUGE things which anyone who even watched a few episodes will immediately notice.
While some may fall in love with trek again I think they are making a huge mistake.

Those are two classics Jack!
I gave up hope for the whole saga after "Voyager" brought the franchise to it's knees and "Enterprise" delivered a near fatal blow.
Did I fall back in love with Star Trek? Well, let's just say we're dating again. ;D
That gives me hope. The only reason I watched "Voyager" was Jeri Ryan ('nuff said, as her catsuit was the best special effect of the entire series), and I quit watching any Trek midway through the first season of "Enterprise".
I welcome the overdue enema reboot for Star Trek. It's fiction, kids. Not religion. They can do anything they damned well please to advance and revitalise the story, as long as what they do is good.
And yes, I watched Trek when it first aired in the 60's... it needed a swift kick in the dilithium crystals.
I've heard mostly positive things about this movie, and since I was raised right (my dad got me hooked on TOS and TNG as a kid) I'm taking my dad tomorrow after I get home from faire.
And guys, c'mon, Enterprise isn't THAT bad (not saying it's good either)... It's better than a lot of other shows out there today.
Great movie. Only the unduly righteous should find fault. ;)
I thought it was awesome! I've seen it twice now. Went on Friday w/my hubby, then we went back on Sunday w/my Mom and brother. :)
Cobalt, you're right. It's NOT the same story as the TV show. *possible spoilers, depending on how sensitve you are* Everything from TOS onward still exists, in an alternate reality (thus "Spock Prime"). The bad guy changed history, so everything's a little different. Not once did they try to say it was supposed to be the same story from TOS. *shrug* Not trying to say you're not entitled to your opinion or anything like that, just pointing out they weren't going for exactly the same thing. :)

After that opening scene, the canon has now become somewhat irrelevant. It is
supposed to be different. Like others have said here, it's a good reboot.
I got to see it!
I love having friends.
Yes, I loved it. I went in thinking "Okay, even if it's awful, there's eye-candy."
IT DIDN'T NEED THE EYE CANDY TO BE GOOD. I left happy. ^.^
;D What Scotty said: " I like this ship. It's exciting!".
I want to live on the Enterprise...
It RAWKED so hard I'm still trying to clear my head!!! LOL
The changes were indeed shocking, and a really daring deviation, but over all I thought the movie plot and storyline added so much depth and substance to the back story that I'm really torn between clinging to the accepted and loosening my grip in favor of this new and intriguing paradigm. These changes actually flesh out and explain the character development in ways the original never really did for me, and I loved seeing how the key players came together as it all unfolded. Over all I was extremely impressed, and I'll be seeing it again in the theater, and buying it when it comes out!
I really hope to see more of this crew, and find out just how this alternate timeline unfolds!!!
The next movie is already in the works.

Me and Andy went and saw it Sunday....I thought it was very well done! There were lots going on, but I think it was filmed in such a way that it wasn't over the top hard to follow.
We want to go see it again I think.
As far as canon goes, with Spock, etc. If you remember back to the "Redemption 1&2" episodes on TNG, when Spock and Picard were on Romulus and the whole thing with the Duras sisters and Tasha Yar's kid - at the end, Spock stayed on Romulus, thereby setting up an entirely believable situation for this movie. And timeline travel is an accepted part of canon. (can you tell what we've been talking about at home, ever since Thursday night. Personally, I am thrilled to be "home" on MY Enterprise again.)
I can't wait to go again. Has anyone else seen it in IMAX and then in "regular"? The IMAX made my daughter motion sick, so I'm wondering if there is a noticeable difference.

Star Trek XII: Charting An Unpredictable Future (http://www.trektoday.com/content/2009/05/star-trek-xii-charting-an-unpredictable-future.html)
Just saw it last night and it was, plain and simple, TEH AWESOME!!!!
The only thing that would have made it even more perfect was giving Scotty more screen time!!
There wasn't a single actor who made me go "Well, maybe he/she wasn't the best choice" and Carl Urban absolutely nailed Bones!
Loved that every character got to deliver their "signature" line ("Fascinating" "I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain!" et al) and that the Enterprise looked like the original Enterprise (outside at least) but didn't clash with the rest of the movie effects (see the end of Revenge of the Sith where, after all the nifty neat-o special effects littering that movie, Darth Vader is a guy with a tape recorder on his chest).
Oh! and that is one seriously scarey future if that monstrosity is just a mining ship!! :o
This was also the first Star Trek movie that felt like a movie and not just an extended episode....to me at least.
The winks and nods to the original series were great fun, too! Red shirt, anyone?
As for "cannon", I am extremely happy the writers did what they did. Now, they have the ability to go anywhere and do anything they want. Everything's up in the air now, leaving nothing safe! Muahahahahahahahaha! ::)
***Spoiler Alert***
Only time I'm saying that because if you have not seen it yet your plastic model making privileges are here by revoked! ;D
I do not mind the destruction of "cannon" but I do like continuity. The time stream thing is perfectly acceptable to me and I look forward to the future films based on the "new" timeline. That said, I have a question...How by the love of Spock's ears did they know the ship coming from the anomaly was Romulan? Remember, alternate time line or not, earth folk did not know what Romulans looked like. For that matter, Vulcans did not know either. (I must state here, I do indeed prefer my Romulans with long brunette hair and mini-skirts! Oh indeed I do!). I'll have to go back and see it again to see if I missed something.
Now my space undies aren't in a bunch over this, just noting a storyline "anomaly". Not like the other movies didn't have dozens of them ('member Spock's "jet boots"? Shot up to deck 75 in the enterprises elevator shaft? Half the fun of 'Trek is spotting the goofs!).
One thing I liked about the way they did the Enterprise is the way the guts of the ship looked. Cargo holds, engine rooms, weapons bays, etc. weren't just pretty sterile rooms. Pipes & struts & catwalks and all. Made the old girl look like a warship instead of a cruise liner. Didn't see any of the crew areas but as crowded as the operations areas were, I suspect they aren't overly spacious either.
...can't wait for the DVD with deleted scenes and out takes!!!!! Maybe around Christmas?
I went, I saw, I liked! I have no problem with the time travel/multiple reality plot device in Star Trek, it is tried and true in this environment. If doing this can breath new life into the franchise I'm all for it.
What a fun, satisfying ride! It was enjoyable to see a fresh character study on these tried and true icons. The actors nailed the spirit of their respective characters, especially those of Chris Pine's Kirk, Zach Quinto's Spock, and Chris Urban's grumpy McCoy, the classic "Big Three". Simon Pegg's Scotty made me Riot's Disease over wanting to get ahold of the Enterprise's "ample nacelles", and Anton Yelchin's Chekov was gleefully fun. Ben Cross' Sarek was well done, as was Bruce Greenwood's inspirational Christopher Pike. All in all, a hell of a fun, well written movie. Yes, there were some minor plot holes, but what story doesn't?
Some of the daring choices made in the story left me slack-jawed and astonished. But this is a new 'reality' for a venerable franchise. I'm looking forward to what's in store.
Well it's about damned time you saw it! I believe you and my mother were the last hold outs!
Hey, ya know, sh-tuff happens. That annoying thing called Real Life. ::)

While we're at it, I have this to say. I've been snooping over at a Trek-based board, and what a lot of self-important wankers! Yeah, the apple cart has been upset. Deal with it. There's an exhilarating new set of yarns to be spun. We're talking about a 43-year old franchise that is mired like a mammoth in its own technobabble-heavy mythology. Shake it up! Roll the dice a bit and see if you can come up with something new. Take these well known characters and give them a brave new world to play in. I like it this new timeline. It's exciting!

LOL! On an automotive forum they would be called "Fanboys". Saw a review that stated "This is not your fathers Star Trek"! Well My dad hated Trek when I was a kid...He thouroughly enjoyed this one!
Now being a dyed in the wool Trekkie, I went out and picked up Season one, the original series on Blueray...WOW! It is indeed a good time to be a fan. I am very much looking forward to new adventures...and new plastic models to build. ;D
As my sister so kindly reminded me - and tattled on me to my son, I had models hanging by wires in my room as a teenager. So we - sis, BIL, & son - schlepped out Saturday evening to a packed theatre & I happily rejoined the crew of the Enterprise. Trekking hasn't been so enjoyable in many, many, many years.
Spock - both the old & the new model - is HAWT!
I'm a casual trekkie and I really, really enjoyed it. It was FUN! My dad, who's a trekker from way back in the day, really disliked it though. "This is not your father's Star Trek" indeed. Oh well. I suppose you can't please everyone!
So I've never been what you'd call a Trekkie, but I think I might end up becoming one due to the show... I loved the show indeed, so much that i made me start watching the original series. It's pretty funny actually, and much better than I thought it would be. I thought I'd watch an episode or two and get bored, I mean it was made in 1966, but I'm really enjoying it!!!

Just saw it tonight, and aye I was wearing my kilt...
The movie was good, but I hate to say some of the holes in the timeline did bother me. Thou I guess the whole Romulan screwing with the timeline negates the originals series timeline. I always seem loyal to the originals, hence the reason I will never watch the Starsky and Hutch movie, it was never a comedy. I will probably just have to watch it again and I will be fine. I have to say Scotty and Bones had me rollin' thou.....spot on.

We saw it over the weekend. Can't really say anything that has not already been said; the movie was incredible. After years of watching poo dressed up with techno-BS, it was a blast to watch a great character driven movie with characters that we love. The FX were done well, all the actors nailed their people; it was a great ride.
And as far as upsetting the applecart.......Good. The whole damn franchise was mired in the bliss of their own success. This will force them to rethink stories, free them from canon, surprise us from time to time........
I should not drink rum, and post.....

I saw the movie yesterday with my brother. We both are old enough to have seen the original when it first aired...and, we did! The movie was very good! The producers have obviously decided to revitalize the original characters and start everything over again...At least I hope so!
I was sorry to see in a TV interview that Wm Shatner was upset that he was left out of this new movie. My only complaint is that "McCoy" isn't as scrawny as DeForrest Kelly.

Cool pic Sir William...Made me think what actor/actress I liked better, old or new.
Spock...A complete toss up. New is so intriguing with the emotional side so close to the surface.
Chekov...New, never really liked the old.
Uhura...Sorry, gotta go old. Love the "curvy" girls in red mini's!
Kirk...Tough one. Shattner's Kirk is a classic, edges out the new...but the young'n is nipping his heels!
Scotty...New, hands down!
Sulu...Flip a coin.
McCoy...New, no doubt!

LOL!!!!!
I'm still looking for R2D2 in the trek movie. He's in there someplace.
In the background when Spock and Spock Prime are talking. Blink, and you'll miss it.
Went to see the movie today and am very impressed with it. They did a very good job character development that we as veiwers expected to see and compare. Injected some humor throughout the movie. And bedazzled with some state of the art f/x. All of this without making it look like a old show or movie redo.
Now it's just getting silly...
Star Trek corsets. (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=20121538) ???

What do you mean, silly? I alway "trek" thru the desert in heals, short skirt, and a corset. ;)
The one in the red looks like she could beat up Cap't Kirk himself! Check the scowl!

But how can you tell who is wearing a "red shirt"?
Of course in the silent picture age it would have been Chekov! ;D
Well, at least you can tell who Spock is!! lol

Wouldn't you scowl if you had to schlepp the desert like that?
Hey guys, I need some advice!
My son's daycare is taking the "after-schoolers" to see Star Trek tomorrow and I'm not sure if I should let him go. I haven't seen it so I don't know... Their first choice had been Terminator so I'm questioning their ability to select appropriate movies. ??? My son is 6 has seen (at home) several of the POTC, LOTR, Harry Potter, the first 2 X-Men... I'm OK with some violence, but don't want much in the way of love scenes or too much gore.
What do you think???
There might be a few things in it that might scare them. Plus I am not sure they might understand everything going on in the movie.
Well call me "old Fashioned" but at six I do not feel a child is ready to see this movie. Small amount of "romance", big scary monster on the ice planet...then again much of Harry Potter is the same eh? No irreparable harm would come from it...But I'd go see "Up" instead and have a great time ("Up" is fantastic by the way, this coming from a guy whose sick to death of "cartoons"!).
Not appropriate for my child at six. Then again I was resoundingly chastised for allowing my daughter to see "Aliens", she was eight months old at the time...I think she liked the "colors". ;D
Sounds to me like the "responsible adults" are going to movies THEY want to see, and not the kids...
What do the other parents think?
When my daughter was 6 she and I watched the LOTR trilogy in one sitting, and most of what she asked me about the movie was "how did they make that guy look like a real monster?" and "wow, I wish I could ride on a walking tree for real, and not just in a movie!!!"...
She had a pretty early grasp of real vs. imaginary/fake/movie magic, but I still don't let her watch violent shows/movies based on real events, or even things that could possibly happen. It's one thing when you're looking at a computer generated dragon or orc, but something else entirely when you watch the CSI opening sequence and see the ax descending toward the head of the reenactment mannequin.
Btw... she enjoyed Star Trek, although not with the same fervor that her mother did...
We decided last night not to let him go, since we haven't seen it yet. I don't understand why they aren't going to see Up or Night at the Museum, it would make a lot more sense. I don't think I'm the only parent that questioned their first choice (Terminator) so they changed it to Star Trek, which is better but still PG13. The majority of these kids are between 6 and 10???
