Who is going to Hoggetowne faire? We are going the first weekend. Hope to see some of you there. ;D
My mother and I will be going both weekends, since it is the closest faire to us. :)
Siege The Day will be there of course...it's our favorite faire in Florida!
Kev and Patti
We're planning on first weekend. See you all there.
Is there a link to the web page for this faire?
http://www.gvlculturalaffairs.org/website/programs_events/HMF/medieval_index.html
This is the link to Hoggstowne Midieval Faire in Gainsville Florida.
I think i'll be there the 24th! ;D
It'll be great to see you PC2.0 *chuckling*
Cont me and about 7 (maybe a few more) in on this little shin-dig! Duh, the weekend of the 24th!
Well, the twins are wimping our for this weekend down in Ft. Myers, so that gives me a few more weeks to finish up some last minute garbing projects. We will be coming the weekend of the 31st.
Patti and I are right this second just 2 miles from the faire, overnighting at a Walmart in our RV.
Tomorrow morning at 9am we check in (that is when check-in opens) and then we wait for the faire to open!
This is our favorite Florida show. Try to come out! You WILL be pelted by marshmallows, but its all in good fun!
I will be the guy in the kilt pelting you, R/F pin proudly displayed on the breast of my leather vest.
DANG I love this faire!
Kev
My wife and I are planning to the last weekend of the faire. We are/were planning dressing for the event, but after reading some of the threads about "snarking" and people making comments about not being historically accurate, it's making me think twice. I know she'll never want to go again if someone says something to her about her costume/garb. I don't even think the outfits we were going to wear will be exactly accurate to that period. If we go, we may just attend in our regular (current) clothing instead. Besides, it's very difficult for an asian guy to find something that would be historically accurate.
Please don't think twice. The garb worn at Hoggetowne is all over the board. Our own are not designed to be historically accurate, just comfortable and fun.
Whichever way you decide, please make yourself known to some of us. We love to meet new people.
Escalarta,
Thank you for your response. My wife didn't want to wear a dress, so she's wearing some type of female swordswoman garb sort of like a musketeer without the surcoat. I am attempting to put together some type of primitive mongol (keeping with my asian heritage) outfit. We both cannot sew worth a wooden ducat so we are going to try and cobble it together from various things.
Renfairenewb welcome to our home away from Faire. As you can see I am a common Woodsman, but if you could see my feet you would see I am wearing knee high Indian moccasins with the fringe cut off. I will be there next weekend so if you see me come over and say hello. 8)
Woodsman, thank you I will. Will you be wearing the same thing as in your avatar?
Yes I will. If it is cold I will also be wearing a cape. I hope to see you there.
Ok, Ok, So who is going this weekend then??????
I was toying with coming up, but Sunday is the only day I have free and it's Superbowl. Rather be eating pizza and cheering on the underdogs than doing a six hour/ round trip drive with some possible superbowl traffic spillover.

Yeah 6 hours is alot. Its only about 3 hour round trip for me. I am either going Sat. or not at all...
I am going to be there Saturday. My wife just finished my new cloak and as cold as it is suppose to be I'll need it. Hope to see you there Mickey.
How cold is it going to be?
The last time I checked, it was supposed to be 60's. Beautiful faire weather if you ask me: it's not going to be crazy-hot! We'll be going this weekend, as well.
30's on Saturday morning, with a high of 60. Clear and sunny.
My wife and I will be there this weekend. It's our second Ren Faire and our first attempt in any garb (hers is much better than mine).
Anyone have any pictures from last weekend?

I hope you succeed on your mongol warrior garb. However let me add this, the mongols also had higher ups like noblemen and I think their garb was a bit more ornate. Check with the library reference room in the costume section, I'm sure they would have something. It is always refreshing to see something different at faire. With all the English, French, Italian, Spanish, and German one would think that orientals did not exist in renaissance times(I was actually told that by a playtron who objected to my Ninja garbed body guard). Actually the comment was that his outfit was not histrically correct(????). Good luck, hope to see you at faire someplace.

I tried to do a bit of research and what I attempted was to create more a lower class warrior, but I didn't have a lot of time. I literally put it together last weekend and have worked on parts of it every night this week. The look I wanted I did not quite achieve...LOL. The garb ended up looking like a Franciscan monk, but with more of tan color robes and a sash. My son said I look like a poor man's version of the character from the video game Assassin's Creed (sadly, it's not even that cool looking). I will probably add some leather to it over time. My wife and I will make an odd pair. We won't match at all. I'll be this pseudo mongol warrior and she'll be a blonde in tights, boots, corset, and Spanish rapier. I really need to learn how to use that old sewing machine I've got sitting in the garage. We just plan to have fun and hope we don't get too many negative comments about our garb.
sorry, but exactly where is the "costume section?"

If anyone gives ye a negative comment, send them my way and I'll have a bit o chat with em.
Fun is what we are after, and the coin of a faire. Those who don't understand that should be in the stocks or the brig.

Don't let ANYONE insult you or belittle you about your choice of garb! If they do, send them MY way too, and I'll pelt them with more than marshmallows! Renfaire is all about fun and fantasy, and if you dressed up in ANY costume, that is more than most of the mundanes did!
If you get a chance to come by our booth, Siege The Day, do so...I'd like to meet you and your lady! We are the catapult people that shoot everyone with marshmallows...lol!
And there were mercenaries aplenty in the medieval and renaissance period...who is the historical expert who says that an Asian didn't find himself in ANY time period or country at any given time and offer his service to the highest bidder? You can dress in ANYTHING you want to, even a kilt! Be a barbarian, be a knight, be a Lord or a wealthy merchant or trader...be anything you WANT to be...because it might be true! Who can say? Who was there? Only the deeds of the mighty were recorded, eh?
Make up a character and then make up a story behind it...you were found on the Silk Road by travelling merchants and sold into slavery...you rose above it by acts of prowess and intelligence and won your freedom. You saved a noble during your service from bandits and were awarded with title, land, and freedom. Anything you want! Its what Renfaire is all about!
My wife and I would love to meet you and your good lady. Come by and say hello, and if we miss each other this year, we'll see you next year...or in Tampa, which is our NEXT show!
Kev and Patti
Kev, I've got a great picture of Patti from BARF. I put it on MySpace but didn't know how to tag you so that you'd know. Anyway, not Hoggetowne but here's your Lady Love *grinning*

AWWWWWWWWWWWWW...ain't she so cute and pretty?
Gotta love the Patti!
Kev
We were there both days and had a lot of fun. The first day was a bit frustrating because we got there late and had to take those buses to the overflow parking. On Saturday we didn't get back to our car until 7:30 pm and we got inline to get to our bus at 5:40 pm. I have a couple of pictures of my wife, but those of me didn't turn out too well.
Sorry we missed you Renfairenewb, we were there Saturday all day. We got lucky and were parked right at the front gate. I hope you got a chance to hear Albannach play, they are great.
How did your garb come out. I hope to see you at Barf.
