Post by: SleepyArcher on January 13, 2009, 09:16:49 AM
I will be a visiting that weekend. ALthough I wouldn't mind being a FOP both days I was wondering if you had pirates out there or if I should just kilt it for a day? What the weather like there in October? I'm so very excited to come.

That weekend will be closing weekend and more than likely many things both official (prob jousting tournament, vow renewals on sunday, etc) and unofficial (sunday-day of wrong (DOW)) will be happening.Towards the end of the season, weather turns colder (50's or so at dusk) compared to the beginning of faire (last couple of years we have had 100+ days). As long as you wear something and no weapons you can come as whatever you like.

I was alos thinking of maybe meeting some of you Friday night for drinks or somethng to get to know some of you! Anyne have any ideas, I know its far away, I wish it was tomorrow.  I posted in the Minnesota thread and am trying to get a few others to join me.

Well, dependant on how you ... er ... dress ... will greatly determine if I show for drinks  ;D

Honestly, there are some really nice pubs in the area and as the date draws closer we will get something together. Traditionally, closing weekend brings many to MDRF ... this year more than other due to it maybe the last time at our site. We look forward to your arrival.

I have never been to the DC area and was told by friends to NOT rent a car as it is far better getting around by bus or taxi in the area. But to get out to fest that may be spendy lol. Is there anyone that lives in the DC area that would pick me up and drop me off at my hotel or I could taxi to your place? Im trying to get all arrangements together to make my purchase on line. If it isnt too bad with driving around let me know and I will surely rent a car. I do plan on spending a few days going to the Smithsonian and to all the monuments etc. I have not decided yet but my 15 yr old daughter is trying to talk me into bringing her "It's educational dad!" is her reasoning lol. Which is true I guess. So there might be two of us.

From what I know, to move around DC as you put it (museums, monuments etc..) it is better parking and economic wise to move in metro. For faire you will need transportation.
Title: Re: October 24-25th
Post by: Master James on January 21, 2009, 10:47:17 AM
Yes Lady Gloriana you are quite right.  Using Metro is the best way to get around DC for sight seeing.  Parking, IF you can find it, will cost you aroun $20 for a day if not more.  Metro on the other hand if you go into the city after 9AM you can get a pass for $5 for the entire day.  Traffic is another issue as well going into the city.  We are the 2nd worse for traffic behind LA so you really don't want to be driving into the city if you can avoid it.  You will however need a car to get from wherever your hotel is to faire so getting a rental is a good idea, that and taxis are just really expensive.  Let me know when you got your plans set and I might be able to take some time off and be a tour guide for you.

As it stands right now I will be only making the Sunday as I am bringing my daughter (15yr old). I have a lot planned for us to see in DC the other days. I really dont think she would be able to watch her dad dress up as a FOP for two days and not know anyone and follow me around. Which brings me to another question. Anyone have any kids her age that she will be able to hang out with for the day. She is really not going to want to be with me. Besides the ruse Master James, I and the Lady will be doing she will want to be far from it lol.

My daughter is also 15 and frequents faire ... I think it is safe to say they can hang out ... they will probably get into more trouble than the rest of us.

*If your daughter has an email address renmail it to me and I will give it to my daughter so they can start a dialog if you like*

Is there a shop out there that sells parasols? I have one but if they aren't too much I could just buy another. Lady Joyce do you have a off white or purple one?

The only shop that sells parasols at MDRF that I know of is Dragon Wings and they're pretty fancy and expensive: http://www.dragonwings.net/BattenburgLaceParasols.htm

That said, I've got a paper parasol I could be convinced to part with for a weekend if you like green. :) (the ribs are darker green, the paper much lighter, you can see me holding it closed here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/morningstar1369/2854358737/in/set-72157607278158701/ )

Tailgate:

We all hang around someone's truck/suv and eat pastries, drink mimosas, and other such sundry things and generally chat before opening cannon. Typically this occurs in the "front" row of cars in the parking lot on the left side of the gate (if you're facing away from it toward the parking lot).

We're usually the ones there at 8:30 when the parking gates open. . . talk about dedication!

Can't think of a better place to bid a fond "Farewell to Faire for now" but at MDRF surrounded by good friends, a beautiful Shire and...SEAFOOD!!! Thought I OD'd on Oyster Shooters when I was there during Labor Day Weekend but that just seemed to be a "Warm Up"!

...counting the days.... ;)

When you say freezing do you mean below 32 degrees? No, I think it will hit a low of 34 so we shouldn't be freezing.  ;D

It doesn't look like it's going to be a nice weekend.  :(

Just like our closing weekend it was rainy and cold.

Lots of warm drinks I suppose.

Piffle.  We were going to come up to MDRF this weekend since it's one of my rare Sundays off.  But that whole 'high in the mid 40s and raining' took all the fun out of that idea.  If it weren't a four hour drive each way, we might have done it anyway -- or at least I might have!  I hope the weather's better than forecast and that everyone's having a great time!

Oh, Pish Posh, Feline.  I haven't made it to MDRF as much as I've liked this year and I will BE THERE for closing weekend, cold or not.  I hope you will make it as I would love to re-meet you.

This past weekend was one of the nastiest weekends, weather-wise, that I've ever experienced at faire.  Still, it was well worth it, as rain day performances at MDRF are awesome. The performers know all the people are regulars, and their regular routines are disrupted, so they'll often take requests, and end up doing all sorts of hilarious improvisations you'll never see at a regular day at faire. They also have to get out of the rain, so they'll often end up performing practically in your lap.  I was standing so close to the Pyrates for one of their sets that newcomers might've mistaken me for part of the band.  The Hooligans did part of their "modern Renaissance" set, with such authentic renditions of traditional 16 century tunes as 1000 Miles by The Proclaimers and Del Shannon's Runaway (with the organ solo played on the ocarina).  Anybody seeing the Pyrates or the O'Dannys at the Globe got to sit on the stage with them, under the awning. And Molly/Chelle (the fiddler)  had her violins secured safely someplace dry and warm, so she brough a kazoo along instead.

I'll be there both days!  Normal garb on Saturday and FOPPING it with Lord Fondlebottom and any others that care to join us on Sunday!   ;D  Saturday looks to be cloudy and cool, 61, with a 40% chance of rain but Sunday looks glorious right now.  Sunny and 59.  Can't wait!

Just wait on that, Sunday was supposed to be nice according to weather.com early last week, and... well, it didn't turn out so bad, but still, heh.  Still, 50/60s is much improved.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a Saturday visit this weekend, weather and work permitting!  (Although I'll most likely be in 'danes -- no one will recognize me, heh.  :)  )

I've been to the one at Anne Arrundel Mall if that is the one you are talking about.  Its a great show although paying the extra for the royal pass isn't worth it to me.  Every seat is a good seat and you only get a DVD and picture for the $20 difference per ticket and you get to sit a little closer to the arena although you are just as packed in and get the same meal.  So not worth the extra as far as I'm concerned but the show and food are good and an enjoyable evening.

I might do it in the off season, but it's pricey, and you can see more jousting and eat more and better food for considerably less money by just going to faire.  If I wanted to "keep the Ren party going" after faire, so to speak, I'd probably hang out around the gate after faire and find out where everybody was going to dinner, or just drop in at Famous Dave's or Fuddruckers and ask to sit with anybody wearing garb.  Medieval Times would be quite the let-down to me after faire.

I'm gonna jump in on this, as well.  While it -is- an experience, and can be a bit exciting for kids and such, MT is a huge expenditure (especially for a group of people), and while the food isn't bad, it certainly isn't "oh wow!" for the price you pay.  To boot, the jousting is all scripted show.  Even though I had went when I was younger, having watched the full-charge full-contact jousting at my home faire (MIRF), it was just blatantly obvious that it wasn't real jousting.  Honestly, even the joust here, I can't really sit through... no offense to the guys who ride, because it still takes a lot of skill, but I die a little on the inside every time I watch a lance snap in half.

You can have fun there, but yeah... not necessarily worth it unless you just particularly want to go for the experience.

You may want to talk to some of the jousting aficionados at MDRF.  Everything I've ever heard about the Free Lance Jousters is that the jousts themselves aren't scripted (though the fighting afterward certainly has to be), and that the jousting tournament is completely real and unscripted.  I'm not nearly enough of a jousting fan to know the difference, but there's a guy at faire who takes heavy-duty, professional quality photos of the joust and captures some very special moments, such as tip-to-tip lance breaks, that can't possibly be scripted

As a castmember I can tell you that this year the entire jousting sessions are 100% not scripted and totally for real. Previous couple of years, the skills contests were somewhat scripted (there were times things did not go according to plans) but the lance passes have always been again 100% not scripted. They are totally trying to unhorse each other while controlling their horses in a very short arena. The free lancers are excellent at what they do and just one of the few "jousting troupes" to do real jousting as opposed to "action theatre" and I know that at least two are National and International jousting champions. Closing weekend is tournament weekend where you will only see lance competitions on various styles. Aside from bragging rights there is a purse involved so the jousters have an extra incentive to fight.

Huh, I didn't realize there was actual purse money involved in the tournament. :)

I guess I should have said that there may be a purse involved as I am not sure there is one anymore but there used to be. That is why we had jousters from all over and Canada coming down to compete.
