Title: What do you do with your scraps?
Post by: Manwariel on January 27, 2009, 09:51:06 AM
My great-uncle recently gave me a bunch of fabric that belonged to his late wife. Some of it's very pretty but most of the pieces aren't very big. I don't want to throw them away. What do you do with your fabric remnants, the less-than-a-yard pieces?

You can make the front of a bodice one color and the back another.
For the peasant look make patched clothing.
Smaller pieces make great swag bags.
Trim the bottom of a skirt.
Trim the bottom of a coat.
Epaulettes/tabs.
Sleeves, double sided. (remember, they don't have to match the main outfit!)
Pirate sash.
Favor sash.
And so much more! ;)

Yep, pretty much all of those things.  I make little pouches and the like from mine.

I make little pouches from some pieces, or save larger pieces for sleeves for other garb I might make.  I have made chair covers to hide mundane chairs, and covers for my ice chest.  I keep some because you might do a remake on the gown or garb and you might need that little bit you have left.

I have even made a dog coat from some scraps I have had for a bit!

The Sky is the limit!

I use them for stuffing- mainly because I usually end up with only itty bitty bits left over.

Depending on the fabric, I usually use my scraps to quilt with.  Fo the others I get creative with and always manage to find some odd place for them.

I make my  "coat of many colors"  outfits.  I sew the fabric together to make a large piece of fabric from it I make cloaks, skirts, dresses, hats.  what ever.  ;D

My friends have fun finding which outfit the scraps are from.

Here is a picture of my cloak.  Somewhere I have one of the guy who bought it.  He called himself "The colorful Peacock"

most of my scrap has been from civil war stuff, ballgown, hubby coat, wedding dress, our dining room chair covers, etc. So, I made a short, cot sized quilt for re-enactments. I pieced them, did a tied top, and I still need to finish my binding!

It has an old quilt that my great-grandmother made that had gotten a few holes, so I cut it down.  It is VERY warm!

I usually make tiny bags and pouches with my scraps. Especially since when I go to the ren faire. i have this uncontrollable anxiety about having everything in one bag, and then reaching in to pull one thing out, and having something fall out. So I have like 5 or 6 mini pouches stored in my bags

I usually go with garb for the little ones. 18" of fabric can make a skirt for a toddler, with mayching top it is 60" width. Or pouches.. like everyone else has said.. lots and lots of pouches.

I keep intending to start making garb for stuffed animals, but haven't gotten around to that page of my project list.
