Title: Smoking
Post by: Taffy Saltwater on February 18, 2009, 04:14:53 PM
I'm not a regular smoker, but on occasion (an ale at the pub while enjoying Iris & Rose) I do enjoy a cigarette, but they seem so out of character.  Now I can light up a ciggie & still feel pirate-y:

My dad was concerned about this as well. He's a vendor at a few faires and he didn't want to be at his booth smoking a cigarette, so be now uses a pipe. It looks a lot like Gandalfs pipe from Lord of the Rings.
Actually, he used to be a really heavy smoker, but now since he's started using the pipe on a daily bases, he doesn't smoke as much as he used to. So there's a tip for anyone who wants to cut back!

I have always wondered what a whiff of Ole Tobey would smell like. Or even some Long Bottomed Leaf for that matter.  ;)

Honestly, I probably wouldn't go into a booth if the owner was smoking... merely for the fact that my boyfriend is very allergic, and were I to buy anything I'd have to de-smoke it and keep it in like a plastic bag until then.

I had the same idea! Except I  bought a cigarette holder. I don't know how period it is, really (and don't care much? not a lot of my outfit IS period) but it looks a lot better than just holding a cigarette. And it doesn't make your hand smelly XD

This is a cigarette holder, too - the cig fits in the pipe well where you would normally put tobacco.  The one I've always wanted was the holder Gloria Swanson used in Sunset Blvd

That is one beautiful pipe for sure!!  I am very envious and would most certainly want to smoke from that, though I am not really a smoker myself.

This man is quite the artisan & the pipe arrived fairly quickly, considering it came from Turkey.  Although this one is mine, mine, mine, he has other pieces, both regular pipes & cigarette pipes:

EDIT:  I just checked his stock & he has nothing listed.   He's sold some nudes pipes that were beyond gorgeous. On eBay search for meerschaum pipe (or cigarette).  The more carved ones get pricey, but they are simply beautiful.

I don't know if this was directed at my post, but maybe I should clarify. My dad doesn't actually sit/stand in his booth and smoke. He either stands behind the tent (if there's room) at least 5 feet, or he'll walk around if he wants to smoke.
He knows not everyone smokes and that it bugs some people/some people are allergic. So he is conscious of that when he's at faire.
Anyways, he wouldn't want to alienate anyone from his booth by his smoking. If it means a loss of sale, he'll definitely step outside.

Pipe smoke smells so much better than cigarettes, especially if the tobacco is high-quality.

I love the smell of a pipe & a nice cigar is swoon worthy - in a good way.

I would think that if you were a clothing vendor you wouldn't want the ash smell to permeate your wares and adversely affect sales.
