Title: Renaissanve Mage- Help Me Formulate!
Post by: Lishy on March 09, 2009, 08:13:16 AM
Hi guys.  So Ive decided one of Lishy's faire personas is to me a mage.  Also known as a witch, but shhh!  They'll stone me for that.

Im not really sure at all what would be appropriate.  Im thinking either greens or purples, and I would like to still retain my femininity by not just being in a shapeless robe.  Ive seen some gorgeous cloaks and dresses, but again, having trouble putting it all together.  Would a bodice still be workable with something like this??  I also know I need some sort of fantastical headpiece and staff. . .

Any and all input, pictures, etc would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

I'd look to Harry Potter for inspiration.  Maybe a nice robe like http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/05/entertainment_goblet_of_fire/img/4.jpg wears?

This is something I've been thinking about lately as well, as I was also wanting to make myself a mage outfit. I hadn't really thought that much about the clothing however as I was more focused first on making myself a staff and spell book.

I think a nice way to get the traditional mage look and stay feminine would be to wear a pretty dress with bodice and an open robe over that. If that's still too frumpy, then add a belt of some sort over the robe?

Though, I don't look to Harry Potter for inspiration. I tend to lean a little more gamer fantasy. I plan to have all sorts of 'magical' knick knacks hanging off my belt, including a little special pouch with some vials where I keep a few spell ingredients handy. Not only do I plan to have a spell book, but maybe a belt pouch made just for my magic scrolls.

I'll keep posting here as I come up with new thoughts on this issue and/or research. I wish I had either a cintiq or a scanner so I could do some quick sketches and post them, but I do not have either.

;) All mages come together.  This is a persona I am working on also, to be a mage.  I am trying different looks and slowly getting my mage wares together. I am adding a blue potions bottle this year to mine.

Lishy, I think a bodice would work very well for a sorceress/mage. Maybe add a feather collar with a light weight cloak.

I will post some web sites as soon as I locate them that have things I think would work.

Happy spell casting.  ;D

My persona is a forest sorceress and well, its evolved over the years, but my advice is to go period-inspired rather than historically accurate.  My current garb is from Greycat Designs (she's no longer in business) and isn't historically accurate at all but it does have period flare.  Before that I had a more medival style green velvet gown.  I've changed out accesories over they years, but I think my staff is the only must have that shows who I am.  I also wear more fantasy style jewelry.  I have a crystal ball hung on a simple leather strap I can wear as an amulet, a wicked looking dragon necklace with mysterious-looking green gem, and flowery fay style necklace.  As for headware, in my pic you can see I'ave got my hair pulled up with flower wreath.  I've also worn it long, worn a more period-inspired black velvet cap, and my favorite--a foresty green witches hat decorated with fall leaves.

Okay here are some web sites for mage stuff.

Here is a great site for bottles and other witchy stuff.

Feather collars. This was posted on another thread.

Here is one for magic wands. or you could make your own.

and as far jewelry, I found a double dragon pendant they face each other with a stone between them. I had a natural crystal pendant already and then I made another one from a piece of tygers eye and wraped copper wire around and added a leather thong to hang around my neck.

Hope this helps some.

Always glad to help a fellow mage.    ;)

I forgot to mention that you can also find the little bottles at AC Moore or Michael's as well.

I'm pretty sure I've also seen little bottles at Hobby Lobby. I supose any craft store would sell some?

I also saw a book I wanted there once. It was in the art section and thus came blank, but would have made a nice spell tome, just would have needed to be filled by the wizard in question, or at least partially filled and then you could exuse the rest as a work in progress claiming your finished books were on a shelf in your lab.

I actually carried a blank book around in my basket one year.  I ended up pulling it out to "cast a spell" and of course someone pointed out it was blank I simply replied, "No, it's invisible to anyone but me. That way I avoid some fool coming along and turning themselves into a toad accidentally."

Good one Serneamoonsilver. I love it.  You can get a blank book at Boarders for very little. I think I got mine for $5.99 for a rather large book.

I have a small one the GMNT gave me one Mother's Day...  Brown speckly hand made paper in single sheets, sewn with brown linen string, and the cover is made with tobacco leaves.  The whole thing is slightly warped and wiggly-looking...  Something similar might be just the thing.

Get a "Magic 8-Ball" and decorate it and put it on a chain or rope and hang it around your neck so you can answer the questions people have.

Get a fake carrot nose you can put on.

Regards,

CB

I am a lady wizard! I have lots of pictures! I do wear a bodice and a gown and a cape. I have a potions gourd and make wands and staffs! Have fun! We always need more magical folk!

I'm loveing all these ideas!  The blank book comeback is so clever!  I'm trying to piece together a more victorian-style outfit for our Halloween parties.  I'm on my 3rd year on it.  :)

Have you thought of using just a waist cincher with a robe-like dress with a hood.  I believe the "confessor" from "Legend of the Seeker" wears something like this with a belt-like closure (http://www.legendoftheseeker.com) in a few episodes.  Then you'd be able to hang your accoutrements on it not losing the flowiness of a robe.
