What movies do you like to have going while you are sewing?
I started this morning with Kingdom of Heaven then Dangerous Beauty. I just put in Narnia. I'll probably make it through the POTC trilogy before I finish all the hand sewing for my current project. LOL
Depends on the project. Pirate queen - POTC, of course. Snape garb - the Harry Potters. Italian (need to finish my pearled Juliet cap) - Romeo & Juliet or Dangerous Beauty. I like my themes, can you tell? Or the Elizabeths, Anne of a Thousand Days, Mary Queen of Scots. Stardust, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Howl's Moving Castle, or Wild, Wild West to commence my steampunk self. Movies & sewing go together like biscotti & coffee.
It's the wrong period, but we just rented The Dutchess, and the costumes in that are wonderful.
I dont sew by movies other wise I jab needles in my hands.. so I rock out!
Today I had
Enter the Haggis
The Young Dubliners
Great Big Sea
Glengarry Bhoys
Whirly Jig
The Elders
oh and
U2
hmm I sense a pattern here
The tv in my craft room died halfway through Narnia so I turned the radio on to the oldies station. Right now Bad, Bad Leroy Brown is playing! LOL (When I "watch" movies they are ones I've seen a million times so I am mostly just listening.)
Shakespeare in Love, A Knight's Tale, Ever After.
When friends of mine had a couple of sewing gatherings, we listened to lots of music and put the above movies on. Music, movies, yummy food, and beer make a fabulous sewing party!

Shakespeare in Love, A Knight's Tale, Ever After.
- I second that notion! I've never seen Shakespeare in Love, but if you haven't seen the other two, they're a couple of my favorite movies.
Doing Period Clothing requires Period themed movies.....
Tudor/Elizabethan
ELIZABETH R
THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII
ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
18th Century
THE DUCHESS
THE LIBERTINE
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series
AMADEUS
Edwardian
TITANIC
Lady K, you know the Libertine?! I love this movie and feel like we belong to a relatively small club who know & love John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester. Did you ever read any of his poetry - that'll bring a blush even to the cheek of the most debauched hussy.
I don't watch movies when I sew. I like to listen to music, though. Mostly the oldies station, some faire music, Marvin Gaye or my friend singing. He has a great voice. ;D
See, those are movies that retty much guarantee that I *won't* get any stitching/sewing done! Way too much eye candy! I need something where I never have to look up at the screen... and "Shakespeare in Love," for one, is way too distracting with the costumes....
I can't watch tv and sew, I prefer listening to music. Classical, light jaz or life style (new age music)
I don't actually watch - they're more of a soundtrack for me. I pop my head up if a favorite scene is on & then back to the salt mines.

Exactly! LOL
I was meaning movies you "watch" more to keep you compmay while you are working, not neccessarily as costume inspiration.
I listen to Renradio when I sew!
I can watch TV and do a little mindless sewing, like eyeletes, or sewing trim in a straight line. I like Ever After, Spirited Away, LOTR, Memoirs of a Geisha, Elizabeth. I guess really just any of the movies I've seen a million times and can't get enough of. But if I do anything that takes any thought for me, I can't watch TV or I turn into a pin cushion.
Mostly though when I sew, I listen to the pandora station I created. i think the three things I entered were Italian traditional, English traditional and Enigma. Plug the laptop into my stereo and sew away!
Regardless of the period I'm working on, I love having these running when I'm sewing:
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
The Forsyte Saga (2001)
Sense and Sensibility (1995)
And various "Phantom of the Opera" stuff... ;D
It doesnt matter what I'm sewing, 'danes or period, but I have a nice set up. I sit at the dining room table (which has mirrors on the wall across from me :D ) and turn on whatever movie strikes my attention at the time. So I glance up every now and then and watch the movie in the mirror, but for the most part I just have it on for background noise.
Let's see... the Tudors Season 1 and 2 are forever on my work station. Elizabeth the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I, Ever after, Shakespear in Love, The Monarchy, Elisabeth and Elizabeth the Golden Age, Excalibur, First Knight, A Knights Tale, Last Legion, Kingdom of Heaven, LoTR, Mists of Avalon, etc.
Having seen all of these so many times, they are great for noise and when I need a break, I look up and watch for a couple of minutes and then because I have seen them so much I quickly go back to work. Except for my favorite parts...
Oh wow.... this is gonna sound weird....
I watch the Nightmare Before Christmas, or Queen of the Damned.
nah it doesnt
when a project gets vexing i put in the sound track from Queen of the Damned or Dracula. Heavy metal or punk makes it work better ;D
I like to watch movies that go along with the period I'm sewing for. Mists of Avalon when I was doing Arthurian, Six Wives of Henry VIII when I was doing Tudor, etc.
Anyone know any Henry II movies other than The Lion in Winter? I have a bliaut to make. ;)
I love musicals! Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, Victor Victoria, Chicago, Moulin Rouge.
"He knows a song will move the job alonnnnggg!"

Well, Henry II's sons become Richard the Lionheart and Prince John, so Robin Hood might give you the right feeling.

Only because you said it (I love that movie)! I have a friend that had a sweet sixteen NBC party. I made the cake, check it out!

Sa-weet cake!
That is a wonderful cake.
That cake is awesome! No movies to sew by here. I wouldn't get any sewing done. I listen to a variety of music when sewing, the tunes depend on the mood and the project.
Thanks guys! It was my first major cake and a BLAST to make (it even tasted good, too!)! ;D
What a great cake. Good work.
When I makes me Pirate coats (I has two o' them) I puts on the Audio Book of 'Treasure Island' by Robert Louis Stevenson. By time I gets to the aft end o' the book, I has most o' the coat done!
I love to sew by the BBC Elizabeth R series because it just goes on and on without needing much fiddling from me. I also watch Anne of the Thousand Days quite a bit. The BBC Henry VIII series would be another good long-y but it kind of annoys me mostly due to the actresses that play Anne B and Katherine H. Love their depiction of Katherine of A though.
Oh also, this is kind of funny. One long sewing day after having watching all my favorite ren movies, I found myself popping in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Peter Pan, and Mary Poppins in succession. I laughed later when I figured out I just hadn't had enough of the British accent!
Depends on the time limit.
The night before - Phantom of the Opera, Rent... pretty much any Broadway musical made into movies
Any other time, wifey watches movies while Platt sews. (Clint Eastwood, anime, Clint Eastwood, Underworld, Clint Eastwood, Japanese live action movies, Clint Eastwood)
When wifey isn't around, Platt usually listens to music: Kingston Trio, GnR, Wicked, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Corsairs, Whirley Jig, NIN, Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, Sarah Brightman, Tarja, Weird Al, Garth Brooks, Metallica, Sailor Moon soundtrack, Leaves Eyes, Meatloaf, Restless Heart, Eagles, Depeche Mode....
O.o uhhhh.... sorry... tmi... *Runs away and hides*
Sewing Movies!!!
Lady Jane
Princess Bride
Practical Magic
Lady Hawk
Phantom of the Opera
10th Kingdom
If I just want music I listen to:
Mediaeval Baebes
Blackmore's Night
Cilean
*you put the lime in the coconut, you drink it all up*
Sorry, having a midnight margarita moment...
You know, I thought my family was one of the only ones with a serious love of Practical Magic!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the "midnight margarita moment"... you know I heard they were actually all drunk together for the shooting of that scene!
Movies I like to watch are the period ones with pretty costumes that I've seen a million times so that I don't have to actually watch a good portion of it.
Tudors 1 and 2
HBO ELizabeth I series
Elizabeth and ELizabeth The Golden Age
Six wives of Henry 8th
Anne of a thousand days
Or other pretty costume movies like:
LOTR
Narnia movies
Willow
I'm also into the longer the better so I don't have to be distracted by getting up to change it out and such...
LOL, I've finally gotten well enough to sew again, and I was thinking about this topic just last night!!! (I had either bronchitis or whooping cough, and have been sick for five weeks - last night I finally was caught up enough on other chores to start sewing again! Seven weeks to finish two men's court doublets, and my sleeves...)
Favorites to sew/cut out/draft by:
Pirates of the Caribbean I (especially when working on Pirate garb!)
Bride and Prejudice
Knight's Tale
Vacation
Christmas Vacation
Spaceballs
Ever After (especially when I am trying to work on my accent)
Three O'Clock High
Live Free or Die Hard (ahhh... Bruce....)
X-Men (ahhh... Hugh...)
Battlestar Galactica Miniseries
The Goonies
Basically, anything I've seen enough times that I am not distracted (much). I'm going to have to add some of the movies I've seen here to my collection! ;D
Great topic!!!
Not a movie, but a comment, hope you don't mind...
I usually find sewing time to be relaxing and just let my mind wander. I think about other projects, past incidents, things I want to improve and how to go about it, creative problem solving, I guess. I like some background music, but nothing with lyrics, which interrupts my thinking process.
I know it doesn't sound very exciting, but I like to sew in silence. Maybe my wife will have something on, but I prefer to be focued on my work, and I don't notice anything in the backgroung anyway.

I absolutely LOVE Practical Magic!!!! Yes, the midnight margarita scene is the best! Makes me want to have one of those moments myself! You say they were actually drunk for that scene? Too funny! I always thought it was acted out very well. I love the part where Sandra Bullock/Sally blurts out "WITCH!" while they're sitting at the table drinking. :D

Is it just me, or does the picture not show anymore? I LOVE NMBC and would love to see the cake.
And I agree with the others about Practical Magic. Love the movie. Watched it yesterday, actually!
Pretty much every movie that everyone has listed has been watched at some point while I've sewed. I'm not really picky about what movie I watch, but it is usually period or one I've watched a hundred times already that I could recite the words.
Sorry! I moved some pics around. Here you go!

Regarding the movies, I don't know if it was mentioned yet, but I spent today sewing while watching Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Had a great day!

That cake is awesome! My son and his girlfriend are planning something similar for their October 30, 2010 wedding.
I listen to CD's. What I listen to has more to do with the pace and fury of the sewing than the period. After all, there is only so much plain chant or music from the court of Eleanor of Aquitane one can listen to when sewing mediaeval stuff super fast! FTL sewing requires things like Queen, The Ride of the Valkyries, Nickleback, the 1812 Overture... Slow and careful pattern making requires Bach organ concertos, Mozart, or gentle folk music... And completing the project before the due date and under budget really REALLY needs things like Suza Marches, The Liberty Bell, and Music for the Royal Fireworks!
And when I'm tidying up afterwards, I like daft stuff like The Kipper Family and serious bagpipe rock music like Runrig and The Red Hot Chilli Pipers: http://www.redhotchillipipers.co.uk/
You are all enablers and I blame every one of you. :)
I saw this thread and tried watching movies while I sew. Well, I saw the movies and got practically no sewing done. Back to music for me! :D
One movie I do love watching for garbporn is The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance (http://www.shoppbs.org/product/index.jsp?productId=1450829&cp=&sr=1&kw=medici&origkw=medici&parentPage=search&searchId=2883346) by PBS. It doesn't show much in the way of female fashion but the male costumes are to die for!
Dangerous Liaisons is another favorite. I do believe those costumes are featured in "Fashion (http://www.amazon.com/Fashion-Taschen-Anniversary-Costume-Institute/dp/3822827630/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245944320&sr=8-3)" by the Kyoto Costume Institute.
The Tudors soundtrack has got some beautiful music on it, I think that's going to be on a lot as I sew this year.
"Garbporn" I like that! LOL
I turn on movies purely for company- so for me it can be any movie that I have already seen and enjoyed. That way, as I listen to the audio, I can recall the visual. If its a particularly good part- for wahtever reason - look up, watch and then go back to work. Its like having someone tell you stories you know you're gonna like for hours!
I am a LoTR freak so I either have one of the movies on if I am hand sewing or the sound tracks if I am on the machine.

No, that book only display authentic historical garbs, so the Kyoto Rococo dresses ARE actually from the 18.th century. But "
Dangerous Liaisons" is probably the movie with the most accurate Rococo costumes out there, and could very well be put on display with the Kyoto ones without too many being able to tell them apart. That movie is such a good example of how authenticy in garb needn't be negative!
I run iTunes on my PC while I sew (my sewing room is also my computer room). Turn up the volume, put it on shuffle and let it go. I have an eclectic mix of hard rock, metal, classic rock, folk, TV theme songs, classical, and electronic/dance so I never know what's gonna play next. Occasionally if I'm hand sewing a hem or something of the like, I'll move into the bedroom (better light than my livingroom) and pop Monty Python's Holy Grail, Office Space, or Princess Bride in the DVD player.

Wow, I could have kept being fooled. The movie costumes seemed perfect to me.
I love it that the movie opens with the dressing!
I don't know how this one passed me by until now.
La Conjura de El Escorial (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1100898/)
Set in the 16th century Court of Phliip II.
Not exactly a movie....
British miniseries called Will Shakespeare.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Shakespeare_%28TV_series%29
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Qi_l_pmRm0g/S5jgbEFsI-I/AAAAAAAABQk/Su2pWgXYl_4/s400/Tim+Curry+as+Will+Shakespeare+%28Edited%29.jpg)
Ooooh I love Tim Curry. I need to check that out!
I usually pop in a Disney movie. Something I know by heart so I don't need to be actively watching it to know what's going on. Plus I love to sing along :)
I have been watchng the Borgias series as I sew lately. Warming up to the idea of making a fantasy Italian gown. I just wish I looked like Holliday Grainger
I usually pick either TV series or mini series. I know I have to do ALOT of sewing if I put on Dinatopea, but lately it has been Tinman, or Castle series 1 & 2. I usually have it so I can just listen to the stuff. I once did a harry potter marathon on a long sewing day.
When I was in school I would start the audio books of harry potter playing and go though all of them. considering each book is 4-5 hours long it makes for alot of sewing time.
I like to have movie soundtracks in the background while I sew.
I really love soundtracks because they allow me to experience the movie without having to be in front of a screen.
