Title: Just bloomers?
Post by: FortuneRose on April 22, 2009, 05:32:36 PM
I have often wondered what the rest of you do with your under garments.  What I mean is, IF you wear bloomers, do you call it a day with just them being used as your undies?  Or do you wear modern underwear UNDER your bloomers?  Is that an odd question?

Starting out I would wear normal undies under the bloomers but then this became bothersome because I felt like it was just another added layer.  THEN someone had previously said on our old boards that they wore cotton short undies....  kind of like the body shaper shorts, but...  not a body shaper.  Anyway, they were bought from JCPenny.  100% cotton and completely comfy.  Then I stopped wearing the bloomers if I wore them because the same problem of extra layers arose.

So this brings me to questioning you ladies who wear bloomers. ???

I tend to wear regular cotton undies underneath the bloomers.  Then I put deodorant on the inside of my thighs to keep from sweaty chafing (an old pole dancer trick, lol)...cuz yeah, it happens in the dead of summer under all that garb, bloomers or no.  I hear gold bond works good as well.  THOUGH...I do like the idea of cotton bike shorts or something...lol

Thank you for asking this question, I was wondering the same thing.  Since I am slowly getting back into garbing and learning what is correct from my whatever works attitude.  I just used modern undergarments under my garb.  But I have been looking into making bloomers.  Although I think I would still wear some type of undies under them, but thats a just me thing.

I do not wear anything under my bloomers.  :D I am like you and I feel like it's just another layer to add to my multitude of layers anyways. But I do use Lucy's trick with the deodorant! Cause it works wonders..!

LOL>.. when I was a Cast Director, I was telling the girls to do it just as the owner walked up.  I don't remember the exact remark, but it was something to the effect of "Lucy I don't wanna know why you need to put deodorant on your thighs or how you found out to use this trick" lol.  The look was priceless.

As far as the bloomers, they are SO easy to make.  I use a pajama bottoms pattern.  I make them as long or short or wide as i like... the main important part is making the crotch correctly.  I even use the same pattern for my pirate pants.  :)  VERY easy!!

I do the ol' baby powder on the thighs thing.. never thought of deodorant though..

I wear bloomers on the slightly cooler days and on the hotter days I wear boxers they are shorter and cooler than the bloomers

I wear cotton undies AND a pair of tights (like stockings) that look like cable knit, when I wear my bloomers... or when I'm in my 'highway woman' outfit (I call it my 'Land Pirate' garb).  But, if I'm wearing my bloomers, I'm wearing my hoop skirt, so I can create air circulation.  Besides, I don't feel dressed if I'm wearing my hoop skirt w/ out them.  Just seems more 'proper'.  But that's just personal preference.  Somehow, I never really seem to get too hot even with all that on.  And thanks for the tip about the chafing.  I don't have the problem, but the girl I just hooked into faire (yep, she got some garb over the weekend..mwahahaha!) was commenting on it.  So, I'll pass that along.

I didn't use to have the chafing problem... not until the birth of my son.  Then that extra bit stayed in the thighs so now I do have to wear shorts of a sort or bloomers with a higher crotch to avoid it.  I've not tried the deoderant, I may have to do that this year!

I'm glad you gals can be so frank and open about this.  It's not a problem I worry about too much these days, but I certainly hated those hot, sticky days when I was fatter...  I'm looking into some longer legged 'granny pants' for a friend to wear under dresses.  How about this sort of thing:

(http://www.damart.co.uk/pls/portal/site_framework.product_image?p_product_code=TFC4890&p_type=MAIN)(http://www.damart.co.uk/pls/portal/site_framework.product_image?p_product_code=TFC492X&p_type=MAIN)(http://www.damart.co.uk/pls/portal/site_framework.product_image?p_product_code=TFC6070&p_type=MAIN)

There are also some longer ones...

(http://www.damart.co.uk/pls/portal/site_framework.product_image?p_product_code=TFD183X&p_type=MAIN)(http://www.damart.co.uk/pls/portal/site_framework.product_image?p_product_code=TCD220X&p_type=MAIN)  These are thermal, so might prove a little warm in really hot weather.

I'm sure there are 'granny' catalogues like Damart over your way.  Worth a look, anyway.

Panties & bloomers here.  I find that linen capri pants make wonderful bloomers & breathe like a dream.  If the skirt is going to be hitched up, I wear a pair of gathered, ruffled ones for the cute factor.  And if I'm wearing my knee-length black pirate Lolita skirt, a pair of black leggings that are just below knee length.

Ditto, at least for the upcoming year.  I found some great undies recently that I wear when I work out that are so comfortable, they'll be perfect.  When I wear bloomers, yes, I wear undies under them.  I just feel more comfortable with that extra layer.

Kate,  just in my personal experience, the longer style would probably be better just because (depending on her thighs) the shorter ones may tend to roll up through the day and wind up uncomforable.  If you could find a cotton pair of the slightly longer length, I think that would be best.  Now, mind you, this is just my personal experience.  I have some of the longer styled kind and they work like a charm.  They stay in place because they're beyond the troublesome thighs, lol.

I tried crotchless bloomers, but it was a bit weird for me. :-\  I wore boxers for a while but then I found yoga shorts!  They are cotton and spandex, not too tight but tight enough not to move around.  They keep my legs from chafing and aren't hot at all.  I primarily wear them under my wool Civil War uniform.  They are just long enough to keep the wool from scratching the tops of my legs (or my butt!). ;)

Depending on the weather and which gown .... I will wear a cotton knee length legging ($5 wallyworld) and bloomers.  I have worn just bloomers and have done both powder and deodorant.  I love the cool and less layer factor, but I hate the feeling of sweat rolling down my legs.  TMI??   :o   Ladies, the name brand - Gold Bond is your friend!!!!!

Thanks, Rose - that's just exactly the sort of information I need.  I did wonder about the roll factor...  Mind you, my friend does have 'triangular' thighs...  Big at the top, but much smaller at the knee, and she's very short (5'1"), so roll-up may not be quite so much of a problem.  However, she was receptive of the idea this evening, so we shall investigate further.

I wore cotton bike shorts, that I bought at walmart for several years. When they wore out, I found some cotton knit pants, also at walmart, they were on clearance. If you want them shorter, you could cut them off at the knees. Very comfy.  :)

I wear leggins from Roamans.com under mine.  Several different lengths.  They don't ride around, and I can wear them all day, even on hot days, in comfort.  They carry sizes 12 and up.

A costumer I know turned me on to the crotchless bloomers, and I will ever after swear by them.

There is no more trying to hold UP my skirts while trying to hold my undies OUT away from the front of the seat whilst trying to balance my bum just inches away from the seat... no more having to re-tuck, re-clothe, and re- everything after a privy trip. I can be in and out of one of those hot plastic boxes in less than a minute on a sweaty afternoon.

When you have to drink gallons of water to keep you hydrated, or enjoy a nice chai or latte in the morning, you're GOING to end up in the Priv sooner or later. So why not make that trip as quick and painless as possible? All I do is lift my skirts, and 'assume the hovering position.'

I wear those bloomers - which I make long, below the knee-- and a pair of stockings/socks.

True, you have to say NO to playing Jacob's Ladder or doing cartwheels, but the payoff is worth it in my opinion. I used to hate playing the water balancing game (trying to avoid going priv) because I didn't want to have to fight with all my layers in there.

I never fall down.

bwaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaaaa (*snort*) :D

sorry. I tried. I really did. but that's too big a blantant lie to be able to carry a straight face for even one second.

No, I'm pretty clumsy, and I have fallen before. I just try to recover quickly, not flail my legs all over, and keep my knees together. When your legs are together, no one can tell your bloomers are split.

So far, I haven't seen anyone faint, or barf, so I don't think I've flashed anything too personal.  :o

This is what I use:

They're the all-cotton "knee pants" from Penney's that Fortune was talking about.  They come in a package of three for fourteen dollars--which is practically cheaper than you can make 'em yourself.  Linkity-link to Penney's. (http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?ItemID=13e5195&ItemTyp=G&GrpTyp=PRD&ShowMenu=T&ShopBy=0&SearchString=knee+pants&RefPage=SearchDepartment.aspx&s4PageSize=15&CmCatId=EXTERNAL%7Csearchdepartment&mscssid=6e1318b1ec7af47848d36938ab042adf3xMnVNoVza3WxMnVNoVza3o200B1530ED51EE7C79B55E11759A8CB93D490911419&Search1Prod=True)

You don't need to do any of the "tricks" you need with bloomers (baby powder, deodorant, etc), because the crotch is nice and snug and crotch-height, so your thighs never ever touch each other.

They're designed to be underwear, but I still wear panties under mine (something with a low rise, so I don't have waistband-upon-waistband-upon-waistband...).

Ah...

Naw, never mind.  When you are handed that much on a silver platter, comments are just like shooting fish in a barrel.     :-*  ;D
