I'm wondering what people's preferences are for wearing farthingales and bumrolls. Do you wear your bumroll under your farthingale or no? Do you you wear your corset over your farthingale or the other way around? I ask because I've seen it done both ways and I wonder of the reasons for each way. What are your preferences?
when I wear a bumroll, which is actually rare, I wear it over my farthingale (hoop skirt)
Farthingale goes over the corset.
It's just easier for me to dress in this order since the final 'hooping' goes on in the parking lot after a long drive.
It's the Earl who does the driving. ;D
I put on my Chemise, Corset, Bumroll, then Farthingale in that order. Then the rest of the routine in getting dressed.
I'm one of the odd people out around here.
My order of dress is thus: chemise, farthingale, corset, bumroll underskirt, overgown.
Actually - since I drive myself out to faire and dress myself, the only thing I don't put on at home is my bumroll.
Chemice, Corset, Fathingale, bum roll, under skirt, outer dress.
Anf Toki helps me. Usually I wear just my chemice and bloomers to the parlking lot. This year with the new dress and the partlet chemice I will put my corset on at home light laced then tighten it up in the parking lot.
OH and Toki does the driving.
Depending on the type of gown... for QEI it's Thigh socks, garters, bloomers, chemise, corset, petticoat (sometimes), small bumroll, farthingale, large bumroll, petticoat...etc.
As I understand it, the tabs on the corset are supposed to help support the weight of skirts, etc.
Chemise, corset. Farthingale. Bumroll, petticoat/underskirt,over skirt, bodice.
I personally don't wear a bumroll anymore since my bum does an admirable job on it's own...

LOL! Not laughing at your situation, but that it is the same with me as far as providing adequate extra support on my own without the need of a bumroll!
Despite my having a natural bumroll as well, wearing a bumroll actually makes me look smaller in the waist. I like that idea!!! ;)

I couldn't agree more - after wearing a bumroll (and Nobles, for that matter) for the first time last summer, I don't think I'll garb without it! ;D
...the order I use is: undies, bloomers & chemise, farthingale, bumroll, underskirt, overskirt, bodice, pouch & fan. My bodice is well-enough boned that I've not yet invested in a good corset (although that is in the long-term garb plan ;))
I just wear bloomers & my chemise ( and shoes, I forgot to add that part ;)) on the ride to Faire, and the rest is assembled in the parking lot when we get there, with the help of my Husband :)
My order is Chemise, Corset, Farthingale, then bumroll ( if I am wearing one that day ) I know women who put their corsets over their farthingale, but mine is tabbed with boning that extends into the tabs so it would pinch the farthingale
Mine goes:
smock
undies
stockings
shoes (much easier before the corset and much MUCH easier before the farthingle! lol )
corset with boned tabs
farthingale
(I cheat and have the forepart pinned directly to the farthingale instead of a seperate underskirt)
bumroll
partlet
gown
accesorries
hmmmm
stockings
bloomers
chemise
shoes.....yes so much easier to put on before corsetting
corset
-then I usually go do my hair, put on my caul, do my makeup and put on jewelry
farthingale
-haven't worn a bumroll yet....although I have one...odd
forepart(attached to a waist band and then i just pin the bottom edge to my farthingale) or kirtle
doublet...which i only wear with my fitted gown
gown
hat
holy cow that's alot of stuff!
I wear my bumroll under my farthingale. I find it helps hold the weight, and therefore the edge of the farthingale is less likely to peek out the bottom of my skirts.
Usually the order is: Camisole, thigh high stockings, pantaloons, shoes, (if I'm wearing a chemise, it goes on here), make-up, hair, corset, bum roll, farthingale, (if I'm wearing a partlet it goes on here), under skirt, over skirt, girdle, bodice, and sometimes a ruff. Last on is crown and other jewelry, then fragrance!
