Title: favorite item or items?
Post by: Ginette on May 08, 2008, 07:43:36 AM
Do you have a favorite item or peice of garb that you just can not go to faire or out in garb with out this?  If so, what is it?  Being so new to faire and wearing garb I haven't found a favorite yet.

I wouldn't say I have a favorite thing since I change up my look from pretty plain to kind of wow.  I do rather like the brass bells I picked up last year.   :P  While often time annoying to others,  :o  I just love the way they *tinkle* when I'm hurrying down the lanes.

Advance apologies to those why are annoyed.   ;D

I have to have my fan.

Many of my fans were made by Lady Susan to match my outfits.

Not only do they look great, they help keep me comfortable when the weather turns warm.

Lately it's been the bodice I got from Fantasia. I alllllways get compliments on it and it's reversible so I can wear different types of garb with it depending on my mood (though it's usually on the green velveteen side so I can wear all the green/blue stuff I have. :) ).

My reversable bodice from Sofi's. Perfect colors and it fits like a dream. Also, my coin scarves.

As much as I love my coat from Ravenswood, I have to say my general Scots outfit.  I just love how it looks on me.  If I don't know what I'm going to wear, this is always a welcome alternative.

That would have to be my boots.

I love my boots!  They are comfortable and I can wear them all day without my feet hurting.  I always wear my boots no matter what garb I have on, court gown, pirate garb or whatever, doesn't matter, since I found those boots that's what I always wear to faire.

Before I found these boots I had worn other shoes and boots to faire but barely made it through the day because my feet hurt so bad, but not anymore!

Ok, so my favorite piece might be a little subtle, but it's my quill pen and notebook. I love writing, and once in a while, I get inspired. So, with ink, quill pen and paper, I can make that happen!

Funny thing is that they are not even the expensive handmade ones like Sandler.  I actually found these online and I only paid $99 for them, guess I got lucky!  ;)

It isn't garb or anything but I would be unable to attend without My mount, StudMuffin.  I struggled at both TRF and Scarborough for about 15 years (thanks to all who helped set me back on my feet after an unplanned crash landing) before I got my ride.  Now I can roll all over the site and see things that I couldn't get to before.  And I don't spill my ale nearly as much.

Hmmm, it would probably have to be my Sandler boots, as the old garb hasn't been changed for a few years now.
The poor things are unadorned and I still haven't thought of what I can do with them. But I'm positive that something will occur to me someday.

My thigh high pirate boots, my new beautiful gold corset, and my pirate hat that I am decorating. *ouch to hot glue guns, my thumb*
:P but it'll hopefully be worth it.
Hats really have always been my favourite items to work with.  I must've been a haberdasher in a past life. ;)

I have a shirt/blouse that I just love.  On hot days the cuffs can slide up to my elbows and be comfy all day, while the rest of the sleeve sort of billows half way down my forearem.
And my leather pouch.  It's huge and smells wonderful, and it was the first accessory I bought after garb.

My favorite item?  a wood mallet I walk around with all day.

its bigger then the one I'll need for my wood working demos during the day, but I's gotten plenty of use out on the faire site, everything from pounding fence posts into the ground to spliting logs, and It will even be getting use ponding together joints in a building this year.

but aside from it being a useable tool, I like walking around fair with it resting on my shoulder, or ballencing it on my hand.  it's an easy tool for schtick

Hard to pick however if I had to pick only one I would have to say my wooden walking stick with a carved figurine of a falcon on the top.  It has the shaft carved to look like a piece of wood and has a brass tip on the end.

Here are some photos.

I got it from Wilson's Walking Sticks.

http://www.wilsonwalkingsticks.com/ (http://www.wilsonwalkingsticks.com/)

They are on the web and the owner makes them himself.  I HIGHLY recommend them and the prices are very reasonable considering the level of craftsmanship.  I looked around the internet for other staff vendors and didn't find anything close to this quality regardless of price.

Regards,

CB

Now CB that is just to cool.

Hmm I would have to say a critter of some sorts and of course and oak leaf in one form or another.   Oh and of course my favorite index finger ring.

they aren't too hard to make.  get yourself a piece a hardwood, (oak, elm, hickory...) about 3 1/2 feet long and about 4 to 6 inches thick.  saw off a 6-8 inch section (6 if using a 4 inch thick piece, 8 if a 6 inch thick piece) from the end, and drill a 1 1/2 inch hole all the way though the side of it. This will be the mallet head. take the remaining 3 feet and split that in half length-wise. take that and split it again.  now that you have it quartered, pick one on the sections that looks nice and cut off the 3 edges. round that off however you see fit (I used a drawknife) and carve it down until it fits snugly into the hole drilled into the mallet head.  now to finish it off, go but a 1/2 inch oak dowel rod, and drill a half inch hole through the mallet head perpendicular to the handle. make sure it passes through the handle.  hammer the oak dowel rod through and saw it off flush to the mallet head. that last step isn't really needed, but it will make the end product much stronger and you will NEVER need to worry about the mallet head coming loose.

(ok, I lied, it's only easy if you have the right tools, namely a froe and an axe, a drawknife is also good.  or better yet, a bandsaw, which I didn't have when I made mine.)

I have a silver dragon brooch that I had made at least 15 years ago, and he is attached to my bodice no matter which garb I choose! He's the wyvern style, most dragon jewelry I find is chinese, and I just love him!  I've had to really stop myself to keep from wearing it to work - my co-workers would understand, they know me - but it might frighten the clients! Sigh, living in the bible belt and all...

I would say my bodice is my favorite piece of clothing to pull out and wear.  If we are just talking what makes you feel happy then it is my feathers for my hair....  they just make me happy and like I am at faire (kind of like someone said about their bells).

My 1.5" oxblood belt.  My dear husband made it for me last-minute when I realized I didn't have any belt to wear with my German gown that would be appropriate.  He went out, got the stuff for it, and made it for me the night before an event while I was working on other last-minute stuff.  It really means a lot to me because it was so thoughtful. :)

I'd have to say either my sandlars or my snood are staples, but my favorite piece of garb that I feel naked without would have to be any of my corsets. As weird as it sounds, I enjoy wearing my corsets (  :o )to the point that I actually wear them outside of faire...they're more comfortable than bras!

Since I almost never go to faire out of garb, I'd say my boots (Sandlars too) are the most important.  I could do without most of my accessories, but the look would be all wrong in anything but boots.

Howver, the thing I'd feel lost without is my sword.  It just isn't faire until I feel that weight on my left hip.  (Don't know how I'll cope if I ever go to Maryland!  ::))

as 1950s as this sounds: my pearls
they aren't real, but they dress up every outfit. now this year I'm working on middle class stuff instead of gentry/nobility, so I'll have to find a replacement.

the other thing I can't go to faire w/o is my mini sewing kit. I'm always needing to clip or pin or stitch something!

I know I'm late chiming in here, but this is a fun thread...worth reviving.

My favorite garb item is my basket and new bodice for my middles.  I made my bodice so it fits the way I prefer and I feel so pretty in it.    My basket is my life at fair!  It holds my songbook, needlework/busywork, $$$ and my flask...all absolutely necessary if I want to enjoy myself at fair!

I have since added some lace at the base of where the feathers attach to the handle. This made it look nice and clean.

And my Celtic Chalice gotten off ebay. Toki and I found that when we put any liquid with ice in it, the chalice's we both have got very cool and helped keep us both cooler

OH and both my French Hood's made by a forum member

My favorite items that I own would be the green hose with working codpiece that I found down in Fairehaven (Charlotte 2004), a brown reversible tabard at Crownsville (Maryland 2005) and a green plumed cavalier hat that I found at a holiday market in my native New York in 1999.

Fav item? That would be my llama wool parka.

Bought it on a hoot over 20 years ago from Mello Mail and it's been worn rarely, mostly to apartment Halloween parties when I went as "Tarzan of the Grapes" (you know, crown of grapes, a goatskin canteen, corkscrew in the belt). People often confuse me with Dionysus but you know, not confuse me enough so I get the girl.

A N Y........how, wore it in the 2nd weekend of Scarborough 2007 when things were bitterly cold and rather fit right on in. But that's the catch......at Texas Ren Fests.............it's really cold weather garb.
