Title: Midsummer Exchange
Post by: rengeek77 on May 06, 2009, 10:46:28 AM
Wow, with faire and other reenactments sneaking up on me, it took me a while to come to the brilliant conclusion that it is now May!   ;D

Which means it is time to start signing up for the Midsummer Exchange!

The rules are the same as the Winter Exchange:
1.  DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, sign up if there is even a .001% chance that you will not be able to send something! :)
2.  Don't feel that you CAN'T sign up because you only have a few dollars to spend!  Some of the best gifts are handmade, and this is not about spending a small fortune at Rennies 'r us!
3.  When you decide to sign up, email me (rengeek77@hotmail.com or prosperoandmiranda@yahoo.com) your R/F name, your real name, and your mailing address.
4.  Fill out the survey that I will put in the next thread.  Feel free to add anything to it that you think is helpful!
5.  I will make the sign-up deadline May 19th, give everyone 2 weeks.  After that, I will start matching people up with their partners.  If you know someone who would want to sign up, send them our way before the deadline!
6.  Again, NO STIFFING!  Stiffers are banned from future exchanges.  If you get a partner and then have some unforeseen circumstances that make sending a gift impossible, just let me know!  We'll get it taken care of on this end, and prevent you from being banned in the future.
7.  Don't pee your pants from the excitement!  Not polite!
8.  The deadline for sending gifts is June 9th, that gives everyone 3 weeks to get something together.
9.  When you receive your gift, please post on here so we can all oooh and aaaah over it!  Pictures are very welcome!

Hello you all!  Today is the deadline for signing up!  Technically the deadline is midnight on the 19th, but I have no intention of being on the computer at midnight, so you could still sneak in at 3 or 4 am if you need to. ;)  I will sort partners tomorrow night after work, so be sure to email me your address if you have not (on the flip side, if you have emailed me but not posted your survey here, be sure to do that!).  Looking forward to seeing if I can make some crazy matches!

5. Favorite Movie/Book: Just one?!?!?  Anything by Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, Michael and Kathleen O'Neal Gear (1st Americans Series and Native Series), Robin Hobb.  Most historical or historical based movies (13th Warrior, Braveheart, Roby Roy, Elizabeth, etc).
6. One word to describe you: Eclectic
7. Anything else you wish to include: I have an open mind about most things.  Not a huge fany of truly 'girly things' preferring steel and leather over lace and fripperies.  As a friend put it, I'm a "Refined Tom Boy."  Still trying to figure that one out completely! LOL.
8. Those who know me IRL and on the Forum:  Umm... a few; names are elluding me right now while at work!
9. Do you have an R/F pin?  Yes I do, it lives on my bodice
10. Allergies?? (in case someone bakes for you) no food allergies.
11. Favorite scents? (in case someone gets you candles, incense, etc.) Cedar, Gardenia, Lilac. Mixed scents: Jolly Roger, Celtic Mystery, and Wild Woman from Astral Sea.  Nawlin's Magic, Heather, and Renaissance Romance from Majicka's Perfumery.
12. Home faire and other faires regularly attended? Hmm... don't really have a home faire anymore. Typically working faires rather than attending them - typicall work from Texas up through to Iowa/Nebraska (will be at Midwest Ren Fest Memorial Day weekend, btw).
13. Things you collect: Wolves, Pirates, Roses (artificial).

Off and running to check on patients, break is over!

Hello all!  Deadline officially up!  If I get some down time at work this afternoon I'll start drawing names out of a hat (well, out of a paper clip bowl, but whatever), you will have yours for sure before 10:00 tonight.

I had a duh moment...I did not post my survey.  I see Emerald added a #13, I am borrowing her format. :)

1 .Favorite Color: green (except lime green) and grey
2. Hobbies:  SLEEP.  Reading, faire, piracy, faire, gardening, did I mention faire, cooking, history (see #7), kids, road trips, sewing, making jewelry, snail mail, making stationery, watching documentaries, the list goes on....
3. Do you wear jewelry, what type (ex. rings, earrings, necklaces, also gold or silver) and size where appropriate: The only jewelry I don't wear is earrings because my ears always close up.  I love silver/pewter, not a big gold fan.  Rings 7 or 8.
4. One interesting fact about yourself: Trying to get my kids to all 50 states before they graduate high school.  Thankfully one of them was born in Alaska, so that helps my list immensely.
5. Favorite Movie/Book: TOO MANY TO NAME.  I am usually reading biographies or historical texts (for school or for pleasure), but I also like QUALITY historical fiction.  For movies, I like historical pieces, but I must confess I do like both National Treasures, and my guilty pleasure movie is National Lampoon's European Vacation. :)
6. One word to describe you: Disorganized!
7. Anything else you wish to include: This may not be the place to admit it (don't pillory me!), but my true historical love is Colonial America.  I am working on a Ph.D. in history, my field is late Colonial through Jeffersonian era (1700-1825), with a focus on the "frontier" (Missouri especially, Illinois, Kentucky...the river areas...interesting to think that there was a French fort in Kansas in the 1600s, not a time we usually picture Europeans in the Midwest!).  I live and breathe anything related to the Corps of Discovery, especially Meriwether Lewis. :)
8. Those who know me IRL and on the Forum:  Master James, but don't believe anything he says.  His lovely wife Sharon, and then Seryn and I are on a snail mail list together.  There are other people on the forums, but no one else that signed up for this exchange.
9. Do you have an R/F pin?  You betcha!
10. Allergies?? (in case someone bakes for you) Shellfish.  Sorry, we won't be sucking on crawfish heads together anytime soon.
11. Favorite scents? (in case someone gets you candles, incense, etc.) Patchouli, neroli, cinnamon and all the "autumn" scents (especially apple cider!), clean scents (i.e. Yankee Candle clean cotton), fresh mowed grass, almonds, baking things, herby scents.
12. Home faire and other faires regularly attended? KCRF and St. Louis--which is going on right now.  Go.  You will love it.
13. Things you collect: Those cheap plastic snowglobes that you can get at tourist shops.  The cheesier the better.  I have a collection in my living room.

Everyone should now have their secret person!  Remember, they ARE secret, so don't tell them!  If you are having problems coming up with something, it might be worth it to check back on the threads from former exchanges.  Some of the people might have signed up previously, and have more information on previously posted surveys.

Have a great weekend everyone!

My package arrived today... and all I can say is ... "I'm NOT worthy!!!"  Thank you Bubble Wright ... absolutely mind blowing, I don't which to watch or listen to first!  Hey Nunnie, Nunnie or Don Juan and Miguel .... or wait.. Empty Hats ... or ... build a mask ... or ... Frame the gorgeous post cards from Pa Ren Faire (I have *soooo* got to get up there and see that festival!!! I want to see your bubble machine in action, that is fascinating).... And the feast gear ... OMG <bows deeply> words fail me to express my gratitude and total gleeful shock ... Thank you seems so inadequate.  My best friend and I took pics together this weekend at the St. Louis Festival and a photo of us will be residing in the castle picture frame very soon.

Wow ... thank you again so very much ... Yuletide definitely came early for me.

A very grateful and excited ...

Fair Winds .... Off to watch DVD's AND listen to music ... tee hee all while thumbing through her new pirate book and smelling a lovely Lilac Soy candle!

Apparently, I owe you an apology. It seems there will be a little delay concerning your gift. I received an email this morning from MacGregor Games, saying that they were sorry, but they just realized that they sent your package to the billing address I gave them, instead of the shipping address. I promise you that, as soon as it arrives, I will send it off again, and I am so sorry that you have to wait. And I thought I was doing so good.    :-[

I am off to pick up one more thing before the box goes in the mail tomorrow.  I hope I did ok.

Ok, this was my first time in the exchange, and when I got my gift I looked at the box with curiosity, and upon opening it, then had to put on my glasses to read what it said on the jar....Of course, I had to immediately light the gift and then sat back down to watch a little TV.......so now it has been lit for about 5 minutes and I realized that the room suddenly smelled like just what the candle said it did....and I had to get online before heading to the kitchen......

Now that the room smells like there is an entire pound of maple cured bacon cooking.......I am realizing that this is also a weight gain candle....because now I have to cook up some bacon cause it is the only thing that will satisfy the craving I now have.

What a great gift......not just because it smells like bacon, but I also know how to use it..........

(1) Break up Parties......light the candle, then after a few minutes ask everyone else if Bacon sounds good to them (knowing they can already smell it and subconsciencely will be craving it unless they are vegitarians)...and then we can get out to whatever late nite breakfast place they prefer......
(2) Get extra bacon......get the vegitarians (that are friends) to go to breakfast with us and then convince them to order the grand slam or all american breakfast or whatever the late nite place has for the special and tell them I will take their bacon....thus saving them from hurting themselfs....
(3) Get rid of the Vegitarians (that are not friends)....tell them that the scent in the candle is actually from bacon grease and can be absorbed thru their pores so that they must leave for their health.....
(4) Don't have a 4th one yet, but I am sure I can come up with other uses besides helping me gain weight.....

And I know it sounds like I am picking on vegitarians, but I am not, I actually wish more people were vegitarians, thus it would drop the price of meat and leave more for me.

Although I can not verify this myself, I have been told by a few gay friends, that vegitarians taste better......

Niki....thank you so much......

You're more than welcome, Lairde! I saw that you love bacon, and figured that a bacon candle would be something that a fun guy like you would appreciate. Nothin better than something that can get a few laughs and spark a conversation.

And hell, really, you CANNOT beat bacon...

:D Huzzah! There was a big white postal box waiting for me when I got home today. In it were such wonderful gifts. I can't wait for faire to use the parasol holder and the cup strap. The green hummingbird feeder is beautiful. Thank you so much, Cormac. No floggings for your house elf... perhaps you could give it a sock or something of the sort for a job well done.

Ah shucks.  I was kinda lookin' forward to floggin' the house elf.  I am glad you enjoyed the gifts though.  Guess I have to find another excuse for the floggin'.

Irish, Thank you so much for everything I have my oil warmer already going in my sewing/computer room right now. And the necklace is beautiful. I might have just the picture to go into the picture frame.

Thank you once again.

When I got home today there was a curious package addressed to me... Huzzah!

Melissandra - Thank you so much! I love soy candles, and it's really neat that you make them. I may have to order some from you once I burn these. ;) Monkey Farts is one of my favorite scents - I love banana. The cinnamon & spice is really lovely, too. My brother stole it from me right out of my hand! That's okay, he'll burn it downstairs so the whole house will smell wonderful! Be sure to thank your daughter for me, too! The drawing is hanging on my wall and the puppy is sitting on my armoire guarding my Wii. Thanks again, they are truly great gifts!

Once again, I've had a blast with the exchange! Can't wait til the winter one! ^_^

I'm so glad you liked them!  I actually wasn't sure about the candles, knowing you didn't like very sweet scents.  I can't believe Monkey Farts is one of your favorites.  That worked out great.  They made it in one piece?  I will be sure to tell her.  She will be pleased  :)  With the bookmark, I took the chance that you read a lot lol.  It may work as decoration, too =)

I really enjoyed this exchange too.  I just have to remember to watch for the winter one.

North Bay Dreamer, you sound VERY hopeful, you are probably boiling up some noodles right now.  Alas, no beatings, you can use them in your lasagna. ;)  There were a number of us who got them out at the last minute or a little past the 9th.  No big deal, just happy that everything seems to be on its way!  I know this is faire season for a lot of us, so we are trying to squeak in the shopping and shipping.

Some wonderous person has sent me gifts from the mysterious East!!! I LOVE the scarf!!! *or whatever that beautiful piece of silk may be*

The box smelled of exotic sandalwood, from the incense, and the Nightmare Before Christmas stationary RAWKS!!!

Thank you "Campbell", from the bottom of my cold, undead heart!

As I strolled up to my front porch I spied a box, and on the box was a label, and it was for ME ME ME.  A return address of Iowa.  Hmmm.  I am sooo excited. I grab it and run inside just so I can open it.  I find 2 sets of wonderful wine glass charms and a beautiful candle.

My wife comes home and informs me that I left my keys in the front door !!!!! LOL

I figured an action shot was in order:

OK I've been really busy, hence the late reply but I got mine and it was VERY KEWL!!!

Got a REALLY nice pouch and matching favor hanger with a very kewl pirate favor already on it.
A very kewl puzzle ship that when put together forms a very nice pirate type ship in 3-D
The complete LOR book!  And some very nice incense.

Only issue is, I have no idea who they are from so I can't thank them.  There was a name in quotes on the address label so I assumed it was their R/F name.  So I scoured the members, nope.  :-[

So to whoever my mystery person was - THANK YOU!!!!!

I'm glad you liked the gifts.  Since this was my first time I sorta struggled with whether I should send rennie vs non-rennie gifts but I guess I did OK.  ;)

Oh, and I bought a pirate ship for me, too.  So you have to post pics when you put it together!  The display at the store was actually painted like a pirate ship! 8)

Tia -

This is actually Peddlin, writing from Lairde Guard'n M'Crack's computer. I won't be back at my machine until Monday morning, but I wanted to go ahead and send a note to say thank you for my box of goodies. It arrived this afternoon, and I love it. The fan is beautiful, and I think it will go very well with most of my garb, except for the new stuff I will have to get to put the new trim on. The soap smells wonderful, and my husband has designs on it already. I have a special place on my refrigerator for the Ganesh magnet, and I can't wait to plant my groundhog seed. I will be the only person I know with my own personal weather forcasting groundhog!

I hope some day to be able to say it in person, but in the meantime, thank you so much.

Peddlin

Very sorry to hear that you ladies still have not received your gifts as of yet. I hope that they come soon.

GINETTE I CAN EXPLAIN: here is what happened on my end, as soon as i saw the thread for this exchange i posted my profile and sent my information to heather and waited waited waited waited and never heard anything so i sent her the message below dated Friday may 22ND and never heard anything back so i checked my mail and concluded that the RF exchange which is mainly for letters must be my gift exchange name so i sent her a gift package (although i must admit that i never heard from her either) then on Thursday July 2ND i received these two correspondences from heather and she said that since the miss communication was due to her hotmail issues and i had already sent a gift to someone she would take care of yours i am so sorry and i will send you something in the future when i have the opportunity to read your profile and send you something to hopefully help you to forgive me for not questioning not receiving a name more often.

Hi Jamie--

I think I am having hotmail issues.  I responded to this with your person, but she said she hasn't gotten anything, so I am wondering if you even got that email?  I had a lot of email issues this time around, I am going to change my settings on R/F to my yahoo email.

If you did not get it, would you like her name or is it too late?  If it is too late, that is totally cool, I can get something out to her, and I apologize that you didn't get my email.  If you DID get it, and just can't get something out to her, just let me know!

Thanks!

Heather

Despite the lack of evidence on here, I believe that these two gals are taken care of.  I know for sure Ginette is, and am crossing my fingers we see evidence of it today or tomorrow.  I have no reason to doubt Lady Catherine's sender as she has done this exchange every single time before, and so her package should be on its way as well.

I don't know for sure if I will be doing the Midwinter Exchange, I was kind of hurt by one post on here and a few I received in my personal box, and I certainly don't need the hassle for something that I volunteer to do because I love giving presents.  So we'll see.

That would be a bummer, for sure! I took part in the last Midwinter Exchange and it was loads of fun, and was looking forward to the next one. This time around I wasn't sure if I could even spare the postage to send a hand-made gift, so I didn't play.

It's unfortunate that someone would make hurtful remarks when you're only organizing this to spread a little fun & happiness around!

Some people will complain about ANYTHING!

I was teaching a college Geology course and I was given NOTHING to prepare for teaching.  I had to make it all up on my own.  I had a student that complained about extra credit work I offered the class.  They were learning about dinosaurs so I used coloring pages to illustrate.  I said they could color the dinosaurs (realistically, of course) for extra credit.  She "threatened" to go the the head of the department!  I said, "Let me show you where the office is"!  Needless to say she dropped it, especially since the class started to make fun of her!

I'm just glad things were resolved and REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope that we can have a midwinter exchange.  This was SOOO much fun! :D

Oh, i hope that you are not talkin about my post explaining my not sending out a gift, or the letter i sent to your email regarding feeling like an idiot, they are not meant to hurt you cause i like everyone else appreciate what you did for us by holding this but you have to understand how totally awful i felt getting a gift from this exchange and not sending one out to someone and reading the other ladies posts of not receiving gifts and finding out that one of their gifts were the ones that i was suppose to have sent. and having the person that i did send a gift to by accident not even acknowledge receiving it. if this makes any sense, please forgive me if anything i said hurt anyone cause that was never my intent.

I think when the last present gets in, I will celebrate with a stiff one.

I wasn't going to post anything so I could still be a proper "secret partner" - but I figure by now my partner might have guessed it was me just based on deduction.  And I couldn't wait to thank my partner, Northbaydreamer, any longer.  Thank you for such a nice package - it put such a huge smile on my face!  I can't wait to wear the hair bobble at fiare (and out of faire!) - the piratical jolly roger is right up my alley.  And I'm excited to listen to the audio novel.  I'll have to take pictures and post them up soon.

As for Lady Catherine, your package is on the way my dear.  I'm so sorry it is so late - first I had an issue with the post office returning it to me and then it took me a while to resend because I've been wuite ill for going on three weeks now.  Still on leave from work in fact.  I promise I don't normally flake on the gift exchanges, and I'm sorry you had to wait and wonder.  But I do hope you enjoy it when you get it :)

Just cleaning up...is everyone good?!?!   If so, this will be the first exchange where no one got stiffed!  Yay!

Now, after finishing up everything, I need to make MY thanks!  Much delayed, and I apologize profusely!  Lairde Guard'n M'Crack was my partner, and he got me a subscription to Faire magazine, something to look forward to all year!!
