My brother is getting into faire and is going to be dressing up for the first time for Memorial Day weekend at GA. I don't have time to make him something before then, but we've got that covered. However, if he likes dressing up, I'm thinking about making him some stuff, if he wants. Can anybody give me ideas, maybe some pics of what might appeal to a teenage guy? He's kind of a cool type, wears all black suits, that type of thing. Any ideas? Thanks!
Kilts are always very popular, as well as something simple for a first go round. Either wrap pants or breeches with a shirt and maybe a light vest or doublet. Those are great bases to add onto. You could add a leather doublet for a nicer look, a pirate coat for *of course* a pirate, or go shirtless with wrap pants, add a vest and go gypsy.
Thanks Blue! Don't know if you remember me. I came to TRF with Capt. Sin and his group for All Hallow's Eve, Grov's g/f *whispers* the faire virgin??? Anyways, good to see you on here. Thanks for the tip!
If you're pressed for time, a black tunic with a belt (or bit of rope or whatever) with wrap pants or even black jeans would be great. Add in a Cavalier's hat (or whatever kind of hat he likes- good Faire souvenirs) and a couple pouches for his belt and you've got the makings of good good garb. If he doesn't like faire and doesn't wanna go again, you haven't wasted much time or effort, and if he does, the ensemble leaves plenty to be added.
Here's a list of guy garb pieces:
Tunic/shirt (I strongly recommend Simplicity 3519 for all your male tunic and shirt needs)
Pants
Belt (and pouches/drawstring bags) <-- this really makes garb look a lot more Renn-y!!
Doublet/Vest (My mother uses Simplicity 4059 for Dad)
Boots
Hat
Cloak
<3 Good luck!

HA!!!! HEY THERE!!!!!
Get my number from Grov if you want to chit chat!
When I took a younger guy several years back I had asked him what he would feel most comfortable in... he wound up in simple drawstring pants, a poet shirt and a brocade doublet (he bought it from a very well known, commonly used for newer folks ebay seller...dang if I could remember the name.)
However, my hubby went his first year in mundanes the very first visit and got ideas from looking at others.. we bought him some ears as he was going to put together an elf rogue-ish outfit... but then ended up dropping the ears all together and bought a kilt... (Mmmm! ;) )
Have you asked him what he would be most comfortable or happy wearing?

Oh he definitely likes faire, lol. He went with me and some friends of ours to LARF in Dec. Now he's gonna make the trip to GA with me, which is good cause I can make him drive some lol. But that's a good idea for starting garb. That way he can accessorize as he likes. Thanks!

I did ask him and he said "I'm not really sure, but I want it to look cool, not like a peasant or whatever". So I told him I'd round up some ideas and see what he thinks and we could go from there. I'm not skilled enough with a sewing machine yet to do full-on noble garb, but I want it to be something he likes wearing.
A barbarian is sometimes famous with the guys.
Both of those Simplicity Doublets taht Katarsa posted are great. I am currently making the longer one for my Hubby. And of course the simple peasant shirt and pants are a great start. My Dad has been going to faires for over 10 yrs and just started wearing the simple garb for about 2 yrs now.
Simplicity and McCalls make some really easy to sew Doublets that will look great with the right material.
That doublet pattern has good pants in it too- if he has a pair of boots already. They drawstring in the back and at the knees so he can enjoy optimal boot sexiness.

That's another thing: boots! He might want some, cause he needs some good faire shoes, and I've also been looking for some good ladies' pirate boots that don't have a gigantic cuff folded over. Any tips on that as well would be appreciated :)

You may need to repair the soles once, but I've had mine 5 years and so has Dad and a lot of other rennies I know... they all love 'em! Cheap too. (relatively)

Thanks! Those are great, pretty much exactly what I've been looking for! I don't mind the cuff, but the only boots I had found had a HUGE cuff and just weren't appealing. I'm gonna have to look into getting a pair of those. :) I'll show them to Chance too. :)
I'd go with a doublet and breeches, all in black, since that seems to be what he thinks is cool (you said he wears suits--like business suits, for mundane wear?). Since that's a lot of dark color to be wearing in the hot Georgia sun, make sure you go with natural fibers (like linen). Removable sleeves and a black linen shirt (although not historically accurate) would also be cool.

Well, when he's just hanging out, he's a jeans & t-shirt kind of person, but when he's dressed up, he does all black suits and such like that. So, he wants to look cool basically, lol.
Tudor Shoppe offers garb sets, if you wanted to have him look and see what he'd like best.

Man, I'm having so much fun with this! I wish I could convince MY teenage boy to dress up for faire (you know, without fear of him starting fights with anyone who looks at me in the pub -_-)
I haven't read all the replies but I'm sure somebody already suggested a pirate outfit. They are crazy popular at our home faire, MIRF.
Jon.
Every time I see 'pirate' on this forum, I get a mental image of the old cover pic from Georgette Hayer's Elizabethan era novel, Beauvallet! He was a privateer...
I know it's to late to order or maybe not. They do have next day.
He may like something from the Tudors. This website has some great items. I have ordered from them before and they were very prompt. I ordered the Locksly boots and they are not bad. I am waering them in my avatar. Just a suggestion. ;)
