Title: Who is excited?
Post by: FaeHollow on June 03, 2009, 08:16:14 PM
I know it is only June but... who is aching for faire to be here already??? I know I am! :D:D:D
What are you most excited about and what traditions do you look forward to all year?

Normally, we go through a cycle of doing faire, being exhausted for a month, and by January craving it again. This year was different, because both my wife and I were on active duty deployments until just recently, so our faire-craving kicked in early and with such an overdrive that we drove the ten-frillion miles to Scarby to attend there. Didn't work, twas but methadone for the TRF addiction  ;D

So, yes, we're already excited, just plowing through a lot of picking-up-the-pieces of returning and re-adjusting to quasi-civilian life again. Hell, the week I got back (she beat me home by a couple of weeks), my wife hauled me out to faire to check on the smithy and started working on the upstairs portion again. So, we'll probably be out there several times a week as soon as I am recovered enough to walk without assistance months before faire even opens. So, yes, excited ;D

I sooooooo want to be there!  Just gotta figure out the possibilities and work out if I'm going to be "allowed" to go with one group or if I will be putting together a different group.  Either way, I will work it out and go.  Just did GARF and had a blast and already craving faire again. :D

I will be bringing out the little pirate for for his first time @ TRF...he was almost there last year, being born on opening day and all. I am looking forward to starting new traditions with him, TRF will be his birthday celebration every year until he is old enough to tell me he does not want to do it anymore (which will hopefully be never).

I'm very very excited, and should have my steampunk costume ready for the its second debut after AnimeFest, with enough time to modify and such. *bounces* I can't wait to see everyone and I can't wait to go and spend my day hanging out at the Sea Devil or meandering around with friends.

I am excited in a different way! I will MOST LIKELY be on cast there this year in the German court. I say most likely because there is paperwork that is being filed that I had to mail off today. I am so excited about it! I have wanted to do it for a few years but always had conflicts and this year I was like whatever lets make TRF my conflict for everything else. I cannot wait for this whole process to start next month and it will be so interesting to see everything from the other side of the fence as cast and not just patron! :D

Preaching to the choir, friend; Faire is my yearly de-stressor.

QuoteI know I am! :D:D:D What are you most excited about and what traditions do you look forward to all year?

I'm most excited about... all of it.  Ditching - for but a weekend - my nine-to-five, cubicle-dwelling existence in favor of something so much better it can't be measured. Setting up the site, starting the fire, and finally, sitting next to it...

...smelling the campfire, feeling its warmth, tasting the bourbon and soda, and hearing the murmur of revelry.

"Or even just getting up there early, and spending the entire day meeting your neighbors, walking around..." -My Wife

Traditions?  Most of our friends are non-Rennies, so not much here.  For us, "tradition" consists of teaching them how to use the gadgets we bring  :)

Including locking the tent-privy, or bringing a camera (http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=7242.0).  :)

New victi.... err.... patrons! :D

I am actually going to try to get out to patrons this year, but considering I know virtually no one out there these days, it may be the usual short run (wander out to bonfire, see catastrophically-inebriated man carrying half empty keg towards fire, rapidly fall back to the smithy while I still have plausible deniability)  ;D

I'll have lots of experienced folks all around me, though, and I'll be asking all of them for advice on what not to miss!  Met so many of you from here at Scarby, and I get to camp with such awesome folks, also, that it will be just like being at home, only sooooo much more fun!!!  LOL

I have mixed feelings now. I will (pending passing a physical in July) be back in LE with the sheriff's dept. (and thus have precisely zero say in scheduling), and have already been forewarned I may not have weekends off...

Title: Re: Who is excited?
Post by: FaeHollow on June 11, 2009, 03:57:21 PM
I hadn't camped out there til last year... what an experience! It was a little ruined due to the fact that my boyfriend chose not to come with me and had started a fight with me the night I headed out there and wouldn't respond to texts or calls the whole weekend to finish said fight. I was a little preoccupied but when I was chilling out ignoring his existence ( we are still together and perfectly fine, it was a stupid fight) I was thoroughly enjoying being out there. We had some strange visitors to the campsite one guy decided to pick a fight with the light bulbs in the coleman lamp. Another visited the next morning after apparently falling into a fire the night before... his hand was pretty messed up! You'll have lots of laughs and some great stories. I just wish, knowing the outcome of the fight now, that I had just forgotten about my life outside of faire and just enjoyed my time more. But to say that I enjoyed my time there even with all that happening must mean that camping is AWESOME! :D

Faire is kinda like Christmas or the like in that you wait all year to get to it, have a lot of fun and surprises when it gets there, have a lot more fun that night, and wake the next morning with a hangover worthy of an epic saga (oddly enough, whether you drink or not), crying out weakly from under a pillow "It was worth it!" (or, in some folks' cases, "I regret nothing!"  ;D )

yeah I'll just have to know a handful of words and phrases.

Welcome to the world of the participants!

Be aware that every year some of the cast playing ethnics is approached  by some foreign patron attempting to speak to them in that language. If you don't let it throw you, you can run a good schtick with it.

Just remember to have fun.

Hello! *waves* and who are you and what do you do at TRF? *curious face*
If a German comes up to me and speaks to me in German I will just nod and say yah... repeatedly and then giggle

I know I'm excited.  I've been trying for months now to get my 'group' organized and pick a date to go to TRF this year, but no one's willing to commit.  I'm about to just pick a weekend and say that's when I'm going :)

The bad thing is, it's sneaking up on me so fast, and I still haven't even started working on my garb for this year.  I might have to dial down expectations this year and go with something a bit more basic than I initially wanted.

Chandler-

Thats how it always worked fpr me... pick a weekend and strike it lucky if you get one other person. Also this forum has TONS of groups that gather and camp and go to faire( maybe some with your garb size ... be nice they may share!) If you hang out here long enough they can be your faire friends... and they will def be there! :D

I manage the bookstore across from the Prince of Wales Pub (where most of the McLotofus gatherings take place). Tis a goodly way from the German area. Don't get over there much.

Yeah, at this point I'm just going to pick a weekend.  The wife's a little skiddish about not having the fallback of the RV that's usually with our group (even though we always tent camp at TRF), but I think I can convince her that we can survive without it - it's not like we really used it much anyways, other than to keep food in the fridge, etc.

I know what I want - the kilt and the accouterments.  Failing that this year, I might just go for the peasant look.  It's been far too long since I've gone in garb.  At this point, though, my biggest garb concern is to find something for my son to wear.  He'll be turning 1 either right after we go or right before, so this is obviously Ian's first time at TRF and I want him to do it the right way from day 1 :)

That's a tough one... it's got to be simple because he'll grow out of it in no time. Hmmmmm.

Heck, i'm having enough problems trying to convince my best friend to put together some garb... I mean he doesn't need any if he want to go as a Troll but i'd rather him try something out other than ''how much beer can i drink, so i look like a stupid paytron"  He's never went with me when i've been garbed out.  I hope to change his mind about it.

my boyfriends nephew will be coming to trf for the first time... right around the 1 year mark as well ... he was born nov. 11. I am going to make him so tiny fur pants and figure out how to rig up some horns on his head and he will go as puck. I might make him a cute little vest as well! Kids clothes are so cheap to make!

Chandler...Sportkilt.com has infant kilts that will accomadate your little guy until he is about 2 (depending on how big he is). They are also VERY reasonably priced (about $25), and carry baby sporrans in the same price range as well.  Also, check the garbing section on here...lots of ideas pop up for garb for the wee ones.

This will be my sons first year for TRF as well...and he will turning 1 yr. opening Sunday...so I have been checking out lots garb possibilities  ;D

I've been checking them out, and they look like the best way to go for my son.  I guess I'll just need to get him a white shirt to wear with it?

As far as me, I'm looking at either Sport Kilt or Stillwater Kilts.  Not knowing what my budget is going to be for garb this year, let me ask you all fine folk a question - what's the bare 'minimum' I can get away with without looking totally out of place?  What I mean is, let's say I get my kilt.  Obviously, in a perfect world I'd get the period shirt, the wool socks, the flashes, the ghilly brogues (sp?), the sborran, etc.  Which of those accessories can I cut corners on and/or do away with this first year?  If I ask the wife for $60 to spend on garb as opposed to $150 the first year, I'm more likely to be successful.  :)

Chandler, you could show up in a kilt and not a stitch else and no one would even look sideways at you!  Might be a bit hard on the soles, and I'm not sure what the rules are for footware, but kilted is kilted, so you're garbed...  Oh!  Look for a "Got Kilt?" t-shirt also, if nothing else!

Don't worry though, you'll fit right in, partially garbed or fully, as long as you're making any effort at all...   :D

Rani is right.  I've seen guys in a kilt and bare chest/bare foot strolling around.  I got my kilt at the Celtic Croft but that was last year before everything went *raspberry*.  I'll be doing good (if the price of oil keeps going up) to be able just to be there but if i'm there, i'm stylin.

Well, I don't think anyone would want me walking around in a kilt only, but then again my wife seems to not mind it here at the house...

Are there any cheap/passable alternatives to the highlander shirt?  I don't want to wear just a plain white t-shirt.

Try going to Kilts-n-stuff.com  They have some decent rustic highland shirts... sleeveless too if you want.  I have a long sleeve black one.  It's actually pretty warm when it's cool out.

You can find white knee socks at most sporting stores they pass for kilt socks for most people.  You can make flashes from any material that matches the colors in your kilt.  Tie about a inch from the top of your socks after you tie them the ends should hang about an inch or so down the leg.  Any pair of good walking shoes in a dark color will work brown is a good choice or you can skip socks and flashes and wear a pair of earth sandals.  I'd recommend a white T-shirt if you can't find a cheap ren shirt it If the weather is cool you might think about a loose sweater they look good with a kilt.  I would try and get a Sporran as you will need some place to keep your money, keys, etc.  Any wide belt will work for your kilt belt.

And, with that, this is Elo's stern note of the day, take a photo and put up an avatar (if you're comfortable with it, that is. If you're not, that's ok too!)!

I like being able to actually walk up to our new members and introducing them to everyone else, and I know of several other people that do too soooo...yeah!

I'd LOVE for someone to come say hi! I'm sometimes a stupidly shy person, but come talk to me and I talk back (in a good way!)

And I can't get enough of Scarby so I was told to head down there this year. I'm so stoked I've already started stocking up on camping supplies.  ;D

I also love to have people from this site come up and say hello.  I am terrible with faces and worse with names so I do not mean to appear standoffish or shy.  Luckily StudMuffin is very outgoing and popular.  Especially with the Ladies under 5.

And it begins... to the sound of cracking whips, we have started making stock for this year  ;D  Since the demo-forge at faire isn't big enough to do some projects (and, let's face it, a disk grinder and belt sander are a helluva lot more convenient for finishing work than a peddle-powered grindstone and sandpaper blocks  :D ), we make a lot of our stock beforehand. Past couple of years we haven't been able to, and made what little we had between demos. So, while some are cracking out the Shakespearean English, and others are breaking out their best garb, we're working in a 120 degree forge (which with my constricting leg brace is entertaining to say the least) next to a horse paddock listening to the Eagles, Doors, Hendrix, and Led Zepplin while trying our best to achieve new record levels of heat exhaustion and dehydration... and loving every minute of it  8)

I honestly think meth would be a cheaper addiction than faire, and probably less hazardous to one's health :D

I don't know about being less of a hazard but i get your drift.  I have to start saving now... as well as for Christmas.

I spend all day walking around/ in between large piles of steel pipe... black, steel pipe.  Talk about an oven!  I put a themometer out last year and got a temp reading of 116 in July.  All that metal holds that heat pretty well.

What do you do for a living? I myself am a pipefitter and know all too well about the oven of which you speak.
