We are building this Faire
one gathering at a time!
It's about Family, Friends and Our Dreams.
Plan on being within these enchanted woods on Saturday, August 8th.
If you have musical instruments and want to join in, we are planning a stage Jam Session sometime during the night, and then a drumming circle later.
If you'd like a specific time to have the stage and perform, send an email to music@sherwoodforestfaire.com.
Improv, Informal, Fun for the entirity of the Sherwood Forest Family!
I'm going to really really try and be there. I was planning on going back to Canada the very beginning of August, but I'll see if I can squeeze in another week in Texas.
MoonDawg and Zane were saying something about an AARG gathering there before August 8th, in July sometime. Is this just a rumour?
Hi it's Amber,
we will definitely try to make there that day. Really looking forward to it! We've never been to one of these. Are we going to get to choose our spots for the faire or are they get assigned?
you get to choose.
see ya then, if not sooner.
if you are or know of someone who wants stage time on the 8th to perform, let us know:
acting, music, magic, flame twirling/throwing
we want your skills and talents to entertain us as we celebrate and play on the grounds which are becoming Sherwood Forest Faire.
we'd love to have a full night of entertainment like the june 13th experience.
cheers,
rengypsy
Will definitely be there, crew in tow. Looking forward to it.
As an aside, some of my crew was wondering if you were planning on having any 'work days' where non-professional help would be needed (carrying, cleaning, clearing, etc). If so, we'd be available for such tasks with notice. For instance, I believe I may have seen something at one point about campground clearing.
we need volunteer days to help us actaully cut roots and rake the grounds in late august prior to sowing the rye grass in septmeber.
we will orchestrate two weekends for axe and rake work. if we could get twent folk out working, we could complete the grounds in two days, most likely.
and have fun, sweaty, but fun. and if we engage the kids, they will think its a hoot.
we may try to have one the mornings of august 8th and 9th...and have the gathering that nite. will try to have a makeshift showers for campers by that time.

I will also bring out my camp shower rig. Enclosure with a Coleman water pump/heater and jugs of water. I have my submarine veterans meeting in the morning, but will be out that afternoon. Of course, my travel trailer has a shower and A/C to survive the heat. By August, I hope the Playtron campgrounds clearing will be well underway.
well, some of yall have asked about volunteering.
here is a suggestion:
we are planning our next gathering for August 8th from 5pm-late. it is will focus on tours, vendor inquiries, cover dish, ale, family fun and music/entertainment in the evening.
i was considering having a grounds day earlier and possibly the next morning.
it would consist of groups walking the entire grounds with hatchets and axes and clippers cutting all the roots, vines, etc...and then others raking the clippings into clumps for burning later on.
this would prepare the festival grounds for the rye sowing that must take place in september...to have the sandy soil sodded for the faire season in late february.
if interested, we'd start around 10am-1pm. while it would be hot enough, its not death under the trees.
i'd commit to constructing some make shift showers for everyone, as well as have sprinklers for the kids (and the grown up kids) to play in and cool off under.
so, we need some kind of sign up to make this happen...and i am unsure how that can take place, so...some of your groovy techie folk can figure that out for this old fogey
thanks
rengypsy
post August 8th on your calendar
saturday, 5pm-whenever
camping encouraged
invite family and friends
pot luck // cover dish
hopefully, we will have entertainment during the nite
volunteerism is sought for the morning to start raking and mulching limbs from the grounds
ale and soft drinks provided
kids are welcome to pitch in...and then run throw the camp grounds at nite assuring us old fogeys there is still hope for our species
"Solaris and the Deadwood Fox" will be doing a Comedy, Magic, and Music act on the 8th, probably one of the earlier acts to give them plenty of daylight.
Anyone else who wants to get on the stage that night should contact myself entertainment@sherwoodforestfaire.com or Eronious at yepthatstheone@gmail.com. Thanks to those performers who have offered thier talents at our previous events. I can't wait to see what we have yet to discover!---------------------------------------------Autouloucous
So, is there a work-day scheduled on 8-Aug-09 ?
Will you have showers to cool off / clean up before the gathering in the evening?
Take Care,
David Baldock
yes, beginning at 9am.
yes, two shower stalls--no hot water.
and still recruiting folk to help with the grounds, as well as offer some entertainment that evening on stage...ad the rest of us drink a few pints!
many thanks,
rengypsy
My friends and I are working on putting something together show wise, but it might not be ready for this meetup. When do you need to know by?
Also, some of my group will be available for working (3-6 of us), figured I'd mention it in case you needed an idea of the number of volunteers you will have.
I will be bringing up my Coleman water heater/pump and a shower enclosure. Actually, I'll probably bring everything up this weekend, so I won't forget it (us old folks tend to forget things, especially when we mis-place our reminder lists). I'll bring enough propane gas bottle for about 20 hot showers and some water jugs (will have to refill from the onsite water source). I can recharge the water heater battery at my travel trailer that is onsite, unless there is a closer power source. Bring your own soap and towels.
For the 8th, I have my submarine veterans meeting until noon, after which I have to load the dogs and then head up to the site (2 hour drive).
Is there a list of what dishes folks are bringing? I don't have time to fix my chicken Michiel or my lemon rosemary Cornish game hens that I fix for TRF, but I can bring a cheese tray or some other store bought item.

There's a Brookshire Bros. Grocery Store, a Pizza Hut, and a really good Sandwich/Pizza shop called Reba's in Giddings on Hwy 290. Those are probably the closest to the Sherwood Forest Faire site.
I believe I'll be there on 8-Aug-09, bringing an axe with me to help cut roots and vines. I'm VERY allergic to Poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac, but I don't always recognize them immediately --- hopefully someone there can help me stay clear of the poisonous plants. Thanks!
Take Care,
David Baldock
On a slightly different subject, I created an event on the Clan McLotofus Facebook page for this event. This does not mean that McLotofus is sponsoring, endorsing or anything else with this event other than I wanted to communicate that it is taking place to those who might not read all the threads here. I apologize if that caused confusion, I was just trying to boost attendance, not hijack the event or give the impression that Sherwood Forest Faire and Clan McLotofus are in any way associated with one another other than as a group of playtrons and a faire venue.
that sounds great.
we want all the links on clan sites possible.
likewise, we welcome ye to our faire with open arms...and hope it becomes your faire.
we thanks thee!
and as a footnote to an earlier concern: while there is some occasional poison ivy, it is not prevalent on the land...and hardly at all, if any, within the faire grounds proper. i too am quite allergic to the nasty vine.
cheers,
rengypsy
we (me, hubby and son who is 7yo) are planning to be there, along with other folks from Clan McLotofus. Be ready for a mini invasion, lol! ;)
Yepper, Sir Edward and I of Clan McLotofus plan on attending! Been wanting to for awhile, but mundania gets in the way.
I will be there as well.
We are making plans to be there (finally)
I haven't been able to manage a trip since the first walkthrough and am very excited to see the changes!
(Mundania is quite a pain at times...)

The Main Gate and Sign visible from Hwy 290, and "stockade" type fence across the back along Old Hwy 20 are pretty impressive. Some buildings are also visible from Old Hwy 20.
Rengypsy,
Which entrance do we use (Hwy 290 or Old Hwy 20) for the August 8th event?
Take Care,
David Baldock
just to the east of the billboards is a entry with a white 4' x 8' sign with the letters "SWFF" and a butterfly kite stapled to the sign. thats the entry being used right now.
almost exactly 1.7 miles west of the highway 21 intersection with us highway 290...or .6 miles east of old potato rd ... on the "north" side.
hear ye, hear ye...
the next Gathering is just around the corner.
pack your bags
cook up your cover dish
load up the kids
(ok, ok...not quite yet)
and plan on joining the Sherwood Family
for the August 8th
Gathering in Sherwood Forest
5pm-wee hours of the nite
fun, entertainment, pot-luck, soft drinks, ice cold water, and ale on tap
bring friends, family and strangers
we are building a community
and a FAIRE
ps. work day begins at 9am, if interested
cutting roots, raking the grounds, hauling limbs off the grounds
(what fools would volunteer in this heat
?)
I will be attempting to come, have to check ye olde work schedule. What's the numbers we're looking at right now? Gotta know how much food to make
just make enough for a family. then we all share...
no worries, one way or another.
several outings had 100-125 folk. the last was over 300.
likewise, we floated three kegs the last gathering...and music played until dawn.
unsure what august gathering will bring.
all different.
all great!
Checked the work schedule...I'm in the clear...now time to check with ye ole wife...
I do know, with Teach and I both probably attending the gathering, that it will bring rum...
*rum is important Jack, makes life betterer*
Aye...me and the wife are planning to be there :)
three kegs? ;D
it really does...tonight for example...while the wine Werewolf was enjoyable it was not as enjoyable as rum
if any of you have game ideas for the kids during the gathering, share them. though they have seen quite content with running around and making up their own games.
we will likely not have the bow and arrow area on the 8th...due to liability and having to have someone responsible to act as adult supervisor...as most of the faire staff will be busy with vendor questions and grounds tours.
rengypsy
Do you have any Rope Swings or Climbing Nets set up yet?
On a Hot Day in August, some sort of Water Spray/Sprinkler/Fountain is sure to get played in! (even by the adults) ;D
Take Care,
David Baldock
Greets to ye all an allow me to entroduce meself.
The names John O'Reilly, call me JohnO, Sea Rover of Gijon and a Rakish Rogue on both land and sea.
I have all ready met the venerable Lord Eric and had the fortunate business to work the grounds with his partner and nephew lord Zane this past Sat. I also met Lord Eric's young sons and even showed the older of the two, Adrian, how to toss the caber, which is an oddity considerin I'm of Erie not Argyle but hey it's all Gaelic en the end :D.
Anyways Sherwood is directly accross the roadway from me Uncle and Aunts Manor, and I meself live just a Swallows flight away on Sayers Road, soo I will be walkin the fair this upcomming weekend as well as the weekend of August 8th, jus cus I can and also because I intend to do everything I can to help this latest Cent. Texas faire stick around fer good.
On August 8th I intend to come out early and will bring a wood lopper, me drum, and a bottle, or two or three or MORE, of me Da's homemade mead.
See all ye merry mirth makers when I see ya.
-JohnO
Well met, JohnO! Hopefully I'll get a chance to share a drink and fell a tree or two with ya this upcoming meetup.
Well, I intended to spend the morning of August 8th with my submarine veterans group, but I think I'll pass the honors to my second in command.
I'll probably take a half day off from work Friday and head up early that afternoon after picking up my children (read that as dogs). I'll pack the truck with the generator, gas, water, etc. Thursday.
Anyway, if folks are interested in learning drumming (djembe, etc), I have a few DVDs and books. I can setup the DVD player and TV in the faire area if there is a power source available. If power source is not there, I can play the tutorials at my travel trailer by the buildings in the participants campgrounds. Over the past couple of years I have managed to get several folks doing decent drummings from showing the DVDs (personally I have gotten worse myself). I'll bring my djembes and gundum for folks to use. Hey, after a few glasses of alcohol, any drumming sounds good. I can give a basic tutorial but beyond that, the professionals will have to cut in.
Also, during the faire area clearing session on Saturday morning, I am available to tour folks through the Playtron campgrounds. To repeat my previous posts, groups need to come out a stake out their claims, marking the area so others can see the areas claimed. Folks don't need to immediately start clearing the area, due to the heat. They just have to stake a claim before December, when I will start clearing the general camping area (i.e., non reserved camping areas).
Once the owners have a bulldozer or brush-hog available for my use, I'll start clearing the general camping areas, which cannot be reserved.
I won't claim any drumming ability, but I will have my bodrhan with me if anyone else wants to try it. ;)
We may be there, might be a not-over-night trip, but it all depends how things pan out the next few days. Might have family in town.
And thee same goes fer me Mystic, well met.
See ya when I see ya me bucko.
should be fun
hope a good crowd turns out next saturday for the gathering
showers look great...tho a bit of a walk as they are situated behind green woode stage
looking for some deals on kegs at present
will be seeking some architectural and/or design ideas from some of you
we have built basic structures for drink and rental booths and need to decorate them up a bit with small budgets...so looking for some creative flourishes from within some of your minds/spirits.
some folk have asked what kinds of food to bring for the pot luck.
just hasten back to your ol' church days and bring anything like a casserole, dip, etc.
some might be bringing cookers
i would ask that yall be able to identify your dish as vegetarian, if it is, as there are a fair amount of vegetarians in the group (our family being among them)
there will be two large tables to put the dishes on when you get there
beer will be on tap
water and soft drinks will be iced down in coolers
wine will be here and there--its cheap box wine...so if you have higher tastes, better bring your own
tours of the grounds will likely start around 5pm
music and stage events should start at sunset
hoping for a drumming circle to get under way at midnight
see yall next weekend
remember, there is a volunteer work morning on the 8th beginning at 9am...if ya feel so inclined.
august 8th
5pm til late
camping encouraged
kid and family friendly
portapotty and trees
showers
the making of Sherwood Forest Faire
we are really excited about coming out! can't wait to see everything!
I picked up a "Landscaping Axe" at Home Depot yesterday. It should work well for clearing roots and vines.
The long-range forecast for next Saturday is Partly Cloudy and 101° F. :o

I'm glad you're going to have the showers for us to Cool Off & Clean Up!
When you get the Pirate zone built, maybe you can operate a "historical" water park to keep folks cool during the Summers ... LOL!
Take Care,
David Baldock
Looks like we will be there! looking forward to seeing it for the first time!
Is there usually a BBQ pit there for roasting dogs, burgers or such?
we dont have one there, but others have brought them in the past. we have a two burner propane stove. would need to bring your own cooking pots, pans, utensils, tho...
Procure grill - just got added to my to-do list.
"Procure" eh... I like the sound of that :P

See ya lot on Sat.
-JohnO
johno,
glad to have you join our family.
we will be providing several kegs of beer, cheap wine, soft drinks and water.
i'll be bringing two our three veggie casseroles for the vegetarians among the tribe.
blessings on all of you.

The wife has decreed that we shall be making kabobs with various sausage. Nothing fancy, but certainly got enough to share!
I'll probably be bringing a Mixed Fruit Tray from H.E.B.

Mmmmmmm, chocolate!!! ;D
The forums are coming alive with excitement! Must be gathering time... :P
I will be bringing a few friends with me this time. Not sure what I am bringing yet food wise.
Dennis and myself and the youngest renlet, and possibly a couple of others shall be in attendance as well. We will prolly be bringing cookies as we are staying out of town prior to the event so we wont have access to a kitchen. We wont be camping but cant wait to see everyone there!
even if you are not camping, plan on staying into the evening as there is much entertainment, me thinks, happening on one of the stages in pproximity to the focal point of the gathering.
likewise, at midnite, if the spirits so move, we hope to have a drumming circle with our tribal dancers to dazzle our eyes as our drummers send our spirits to a primal high.
I will be bringing three drums to be used by folks who feel the need. Even if you have never drummed, I think there will be more than enough folks to get the beat going and show you how to make glad music.
If you have never experienced a fully coordinated drumming circle, with dancers, fire acts, bon fire, multiple drummers, and other instruments, this is the time to live the experience.
Time...to gathering... so slow... must go faster....
brownies are baking :) they smell yummy! :)
looks like its chorizo and egg breakfast tacos for Sunday morning! I should have enough stuff for about 10+ people. More then happy to do more then that, just need to let me know if more then that will be wanting such for breakfast!

And when you run out of you're strange mixture come on over and have some Farmer's Breakfast.
We'll be caravaning up with Bonny Pearl, I'm bringing a large fruit salad. Nice and cold to fight this awful heat. Doubt we'll camp just too dang hot.
I posted a notice to Twitter about the gathering. Don't know that you'll get anyone out because of it but awareness always helps. Have a great time.
Sorry but we're not going to be able to make it. I'm going to georgia tomorrow. Next time though.
We had a terrific time! This faire is going to be great! It's always good to see all the familiar face and make new rennie friends. The drum circle really had it going!
I've just reg'd with the site, but have been lurking in the shadows for some time. My wife and I made it out to the gathering yesterday afternoon/evening, and we had a great time!! I just wanted to chim in to say the site was really cool, the folks were really nice (not that we expected anything less), and we both look forward to additional gatherings as well as the faire itself.
Eric my friend, your passion is obvious and your logical and business like approach in putting this venture together was impressive!
We've been attending TRF for some time now and really enjoy our time there. But with Sherwood starting up in early spring every year (and only an hours drive from our house, we live in Round Rock), this is going to be a welcome addition to central Texas rennie fans. I look forward to weekends camping out and attending the faire!!
