Title: The Cullinary Delights of TRF
Post by: Blue66669 on June 24, 2009, 10:01:42 AM
Every year at faire, I "eat" my way around the place, stopping and sampling almost everything I can get my greasy little hands on. Last year was the emergence of the chocolate dipped cheesecake on a stick, frozen hot chocolate, and of course, a celebration of the old favorites such as fish and chips and gyros. What is it that you plan on eating this year at TRF???

Scotch eggs
For some reason, the ones at TRF are just better than almost anywhere else
My Lovely Lady makes the bestest ones, but making them is a pain in the rear so I hate to ask for them. TRF is the next best thing.
Fish & Chips
Whoever thought of putting those in the Sea Devil last year deserves a kiss on the lips.
Gator on a stick
Way over priced... but reminds me of home. So I grab one now and then.
The Kings Feast (in general)
I had never went until last year. Always thought it was just to pricey and couldn't see why it was worth it. Now I get it. Fantastic food and drink in mass quantities with a top notch show. We'll be doing that again at least once this year.

Anything else is trying the new stuff. I love to find new foods.

*Rum cake... if someone brings some again... I will be eating it lol*

See, when I tried it, it was dry. And unfortunately, my fish was WAY overcooked and overly crispy. I'll try it again this year though...

Golabki!
Since all my friends grandmothers have passed, I can't even go back to see family and sneak over to get some of that great Polish food anymore.

Oh yeah, the golabki, and the pierogi too! The POW has the bestest grub (IMO) for the public. If you know and have access to the BBQ pit backstage, though, James does some fan-damn-tastic barbecue sammitches and stuffed bakers for the cast & crew.

I love the big burgers and Reubens in the German section. I usually split one with a friend. love the Prime Rib  and fish and chips at the POW. I ADORED the king's feast. Good friends treated me last year! Wow!
I would do it again- if my alchemy was doing better! LOL!

I was thoroughly unimpressed w/the fish & chips at the POW - dry, yet greasy.  I always start the day w/a Scotch egg.  Sometime during the day I'll get a fruit & cheese platter.  I like a pretzel at the joust.   Mostly I like to wander around sipping a Spanish Sunrise and and partaking of  a Sweet *itch, or two, during Iris & Rose.

Do the Scottish eggs get worse towards the last weekends? I noticed at Scarborough the eggs (maybe the cooking oil?) seem to get a little "dated" by Memorial day.

lol i dont care for Scotch eggs, so couldnt tell you...

I will say, I dont buy Fish & Chips at TRF... no where (not even anywhere we found in the UK!) does a better fish supper than the booth at Scarby back by Dra and Cast in Bronze...

I've had an egg or two that wasn't great, but don't recall if it was later, rather than early, in the season.

YES! I found that place when the delightful smell found it's way to me while waiting for Dr. Kaboom! Their Salmon medallions are a little iffy, but the fish is great!

Yup ... pretty much agree with many here, n' add a few o' me own:

Scotch Eggs
Beef Empanadas in the Tex-Mex area of the food court
Fish n Chips at th' Sea Devil/POW
PRIME RIB TRENCHER @ POW w/ th' Horseradish sauce!!!
gyros in the Greek section
and an evening cappacino with a cigar at the area with the purple awnings toward the front section of faire.

we have a little tradition with our son after fireworks.  at least a few times during the season we go to the front where the really yummy hot chocolate/coffees and sweet nom noms are served.  it's kinda nice to just sit and relax for a few minutes at the end of the faire day and then get ourselves in gear for the camping festivities.

i can't recall the name of the place, but i think it is the same place or right next to where molden mentioned cigars and cappacino's.

That would be Indulgences!  Yummy stuff!

I'm looking forward to the fish-n-chips at the POW, the reubens, scotch eggs aare always a good snack, and I may have to get a bread bowl this year.  It's been a while since I had one.  Oh, and we'll hit the Agora at least once - I love the corfu wraps!

That does it! One of the big three weekends I will take you out to the campground and show you what a real Rueben is. The stuff they serve inside just doesn't count. Too bad you can't stay after dark. I've been informed that I will be making Wiener Schnitzel again this season.

Alas! I can't drive after dark. I usually ride with Cat- c.dragonworks. I stay with her at faire.

I always have to post this in you all's thread about good things to eat at TRF.

I had the best breakfast ever one morning. A Bloody Mary and a batter friend sausage on a stick. Found it in one of the center lanes I think.  I'm telling you...it was seriously good.

They had some batter-fried German sausage at Scarborough and I've been jonesing for another one since. I better double time the gym. Between the booze and the grub I'm gonna gain 10lbs a day in October.

Wonder if it was the same vendor? Hope fully someone can point the way for you.

Gotta work off the grub with some wench chasing!  ;D I read your post about more wenches in the Rendezvous vote thread. Made me laugh.  :) :)

I'd like to digress from the culinary delights for a moment and reflect on the libations available.  Now, I'm sure this is not something I will do often, but last year, surrounded by my pirate bretheren, we indulged on three bottles of mead from Indulgences.  This is the second year we're done this (first year was a bottle of wine with far fewer people around the table) but this is turning into my favorite event for Pirate Weekend.  (too bad I'll miss this year)

To bring this back onto topic...I've become a fan of the berry cobbler near the front.  MmmmmMMMMmmm...

If 'libations' refers to boozing then I agree wit'cha. There's something about draft Widmer that just tastes right. And usually I bring a flask (or two) with my special blend or good old fashion straight tequila....to keep me warm.

Best libation I ever found was a spur of the moment idea from Lady Mum
We were all about to freeze closing weekend a couple of years ago (that horrible saturday of rain and sleet and nastiness) when we all decided hot chocolate would be perfect start for the morning. Lady Mum thought of adding coconut rum to hers and of course we all jumped on board that plan. Made us much warmer and toasty.
Now Hot chocolate just aint right without the coconut rum in it.

*somehow she just knew I had a boda bag full of rum... don't know why she would have thought that*

lol
I walk in with 5-6 flasks and a boda bag full of rum and leave each day nearly empty
My theory is... the faster I drink it, the lighter I will be

*I have no idea how I walk out straight(ish) after the fifth of rum is gone...*

I might have to get a flask so I can share my favorite concoction (called nuts and berries).

But as for food ... the only thing I remember having at TRF last season on my single visit was the King's Buns (near Sound and Fury) and melted chocolate from indulgences.  They were fantastic ... although Ii'm sure I ate other things that trip!

Is there an on-site bakery at TRF?

I love fresh baked herbal breads with real butter, like Guy Gary (I think that was his name) used to fix at Hawkwood about 10-12 years ago.

Take Care,

EDIT:  Was reminded that the baker's name was Guy.

Libations:

The Pavillion sells cordials (amaretto, chambord, etc)

And as far as bakery, the closest is The Queen's Pantry, to the right of Gate (a little ways on) but they do quiche, pastry, etc.

A pickle.
I had been on a low sodium diet for about 3 years when on opening day last year I fell to temptation and got one from a traveling vendor.  I swear it was the best thing I had ever eaten, my mouth now waters at just the thought.  I may have to fall to temptation again this year.

OMG- seriously- lol bairns gather ye round for granny's haggis hangover story!!!

we had come out opening weekend- I do not tolerate heat well so this was a SILLY idea. I had probably a whole bottle of loki unto myself, and then some.

Now, mind you, I am NOT typically a hangover sufferer (and yes, everybody hates me for it!)

But this morning, I was fine till I started cooking breakfast- bacon was turning my stomach (and it's bad when I don't want bacon!) We had only brought the bacon as, at that point, I was NOT going to eat haggis!

Well, Mitch starts frying up his haggis, and my little nose perks up... and my previously ill tummy starts making yummy noises... so, I had a bite... then another- and another!!! Gone was my hangover and I lived to drink another day... We maintain that the barley and oats act as sponges, and the trace minerals in the organ meats replace lost nutrients...

ANYWAY- yes, haggis is the BEST hangover cure!

Anyone know what those 'Tartan Tempura' things are at the queen's pantry? I am soooo hoping they're fried haggis- we had some in Scotland; those with a little major grey chutney- HEAVEN!!!

Definitely love to split the huge hamburgers in the German area with someone.  I certainly can't finish one alone!

My favorite, though, is the pierogies!  Nom nom nom!

I don't tend to drink a lot of alcohol, especially at faire when I focus on getting water in during the day, but when I do I tend to like to stop by Spain and get Sangria.  I can sip at the wine and nibble on the fruit and be happy, happy, happy!

Hey, a pickle on opening day at TRF is a really good idea.  Replace lost water and salt from sweating the bajeebus through your garb!  I bet if TRF had pickle pirates (guys pushing pickle carts) for the first few weeks, they'd make a killing.

I did think of one more thing that made an appearance last year.  It's a fruit and cheese plate gotten from the place across from the POW.  That was my favorite thing from the New York Faire and I'm so glad it has made it down here.

c'mon, and haggis doesnt? One year (that crazy rainy awful closing weekend 2 years ago) we had black and white pudding, then haggis, then more black and white pudding, for our breakfasts... and let me tell you I WAS shouting 'gaurdy loo!"

I had a blast that weekend!  i was there on Saturday... raining and colder that a witch's tit in a brass bra.  it was great to see Iris and Rose from about 5 feet away... standing under umbrella's and drinking like fish.  I always seemed to make it to POW just as the Heavens would open up.

I'm not saying it wasnt an AWESOME time at Faire (remember Sunday when the front finally passed and everyone was pointing like OMG what's that strip of blue in the sky- is that- the SUN? woahh!)

it was just NASTY and awful at night- and we were in a pop-up that time! (i must've been psychic or something) lol I'm one of these people who cant sleep if they're too cold- and yes, I was TOO COLD! When you wake in the morning and have to crack ice on your table to get breakfasts tarted- TOO DAMN COLD! But, it was nice to see faire in a different way- we did spend most of Saturday in POW... and it was nice to see so few 'danes about as most everybody who WAS there was Rennie... lol I was ever so glad for my fleece pants under my skirts, though! Too bad it didnt snow there like it did that year at Scarby!

um... FOOD! I'm on topic, yeah!!!

Actually, at the New York Faire, that's what they are called.  Of course, there was Pickle Boy, but that's a tangent that moves into a different part of the forums... ;-)

How are the pierogi's at Polonia?  I grew up in Pittsburgh and could get them from real Pols... might be a flashback/taste of home.

TRF used to have Pickle Boys selling pickles from moving carts. Very popular. And, yes, their hawking lines would easily get this moved to another part of the forum.

Well, if you see him again, send him down my way.

The pickle guys I was referring to were there about 10-15 years ago, very loud, very in-your-face, & very obscene

I had the greek salad last year & it was pretty good.  I was really wanting some form of salad with meat but it did in a pinch.

We'll have to get the fruit & cheese plate when we go this year.  Nice mid-afternoon refreshment.

I love the hamburgers in the German section.  The pirogies are to die for. The veggie wrap at the Queen's Pantry is great on a hot hot day. Hell, just about anything at the Queen's pantry is fantastic.   I usually knosh on a baked potato after a long day, mainly cause it's the easiest thing to buy on your way backstage, but they are still very good.  My problem is trying to decide what to eat.

My keyboard at work is running the risk of shorting out right now, being so close to me while I read this. :Q
I wants faire nao nao nao~~ >.<

I always get a Gyro, Fish and Chips, anything I walk by that smells/looks/s. ounds/seems like it my be delicious. I just like food in general. Surprisingly enough, I normally manage to lose weight by the end of the season... I should weigh upwards of 500 lbs. with the amount of food I eat out there. >>;

OK - We had the prime rib sammich at the POW on Saturday...  It was nothing near what was described on the forum and had I never read a review of it, it would still not have been worth the $13 I paid for it.  Did anyone else experience skimping this year?

I was extremely excited to find that they were serving Guiness this year at all beer booths by way of the Guiness Tall Can.  I was extremely unhappy however when I ordered a Guiness at the Sea Devil and was handed a small cup poured from the tap (FOR THE SAME DAMN PRICE).  Lesson learned: Don't buy beer from the Sea Devil.

I luvvs me some stouts.  But if the Realm is going to continue to fleece us I am going to follow someones advice and just live off of my flask while inside and save the beer drinking for when I return to camp.  I hate to deprive the king of his due but I refuse to be ripped off.

On a brighter note, we did find some decent deals in the way of food - so its not all bad.

to add to what KP said- um, Cider is now priced the same as mead and wine? as in, I paid $26 for 2 full pints (4 servings)

WTH???

I think we're just going to get more flasks and do things that way- OR buy one of those new-fangled Bamboo staff/walking flasks! how AWESOME were those??

Geez...  Guess I'm not going to get to do any shopping during AHE, since it sounds like all I'll be buying is food!!!  LOL  I really loved the fruit and cheese platter at Scarby, and if it turns warm at all that's what I'll be wanting, but if it's chilly then the baked potato will probably be on my menu.  Grov mentioned in another thread a place that sells a pot roast sammich, though, (complete with potatoes and carrots) and I hadn't seen it posted in here yet.  Anyone tried this?

I had a really excellent scotch egg - must have been new oil because I've had some that weren't so good.  When I described it to my bff, a nurse, she said it was a cholesterol bullet.  Like the later fish 'n chips & apple dumpling weren't!  The good news about being laced in is that a couple of bites is filling.
