Title: How do you TRF?
Post by: bellevivre on June 25, 2009, 12:03:30 PM
What's your faire style? I like to go everywhere, in an orderly way- just start walking and see where it leads me. Hubby's style is, literally:

Oh look, Prince of Wales! (30 minutes)
aimless wandering
Oh look, Sea Devil! (30 minutes)
aimless wandering

Lather, rinse, repeat.

It drives me batty! I have been going to faire, consistently, for 6 years, and do you know- Ive never seen a joust, or 75% of the shows. ARGH! Pretty much the only time he stops for a show is (was) for E Muzeki, or for Tartanic.

Well, this year I have a fancy new camera, and I think I need to call the shots!

What's your faire style? (why is this sounding like it needs to be a Facebook quiz...?)

I am a big fan of wandering myself
My Lovely Lady likes to shops, so the two combine into us walking the entire faire in a seemingly random pattern but one that covers pretty much every shop we want to get to.
I also like to watch shows when I can so if I know one is coming up we will steer towards it, watch it while we rest then head right back out again.
For the most part though, we tend to go where the crowd is going. We rarely walk more than 20 feet before stopping to meet someone who then joins the group we are walking with. After a time we get to this largish crowd that just kind of floats along aimlessly lol

*by the end of a days rumming, aimless is the best word to describe where we are going...*

My plan is this. To meticulously plan and organize every aspect of my adventure so as to see each show, partake in each event and sample all the food/drink. In reality I'll stumble around aimlessly and enjoy whatevers closest.

I didn't get to do much shopping last season, so I am hoping I can do that.  I'm looking for something light and comfy and gypsy-ish.  :)

We do have this habit of planting our butts at the Sea Devil in the latter part of the day.  ::)

First year there was spent blowing idiotic amounts of money on weapons at Chris Poor's shop (he was the blacksmith back then), and then visiting the bellydancers. Then again, I was 17, so that's what is expect I guess  ;D
These days, nearly 20 years later, it's work, slip out for a break to the Prince of Wales, spend idiotic money on food, wander around with the wifemunster for a bit, watch a few shows (Sound and Fury are right around the corner), go back to work, watch fireworks, go play  ;) I actually enjoy what I do, so working all day in the forge isn't so bad, and I have free reign to come and go as I please, so it's more by choice than anything else.

Thinking of taking more breaks this year since we'll have a lot more stock made before faire and won't need to be making it during the run, but since everyone I know works all day, I'd need to find a group of playtrons to hang out with that won't require me keeping bail money on hand *sidelong glance at a few people here* yeeeaaaah... you know who you are...  :D

Usually it's wander around somewhat aimlessly with a couple of shops or a show in mind.  Meet people and stop to talk.  Detour for a libation.  Get to one of said goals.  Wander some more.  Get to the Price of Wales to watch the parade with the group from here.  Decide on lunch.  Either go eat lunch or detour out to the car bar and then eat lunch.  Wander some more.  Usually catch some music in the afternoon.  Wander or hit the car bar (we get there EARLY so we're parked really close).  Find the "Unscheduled Pub Sing".  Wander down to the fireworks.  Head for car bar to offload excess crap-on-belt and fill the mug and then go watch Tartanic's outside the gate show.

At Scraby I'm normally so busy with things I don't get to see much or have time to wonder around and see friends.  So at TRF I do just that wonder around pretty much at random.  There are certain shows I try to see but its mostly just wonder and see who I run into.

Other than maybe making a couple certain shows that I see every year, I refuse to make any kind of plan. Why you might ask? Because it never happens. Not that I'm complaining because I love my friends I run into about ever 20-30 steps :)

I'm the kind of girl who likes to get around -- and wander.  I love Iris & Rose so I'll make a point of seeing them, but that's my only must do, besides my a.m. Scotch egg.  And the parade from the POW.

My friends and I usually usually meandered in to the shaded area just insyde the gates, drifted toward the right, got a scotch egg, and the first beer of the day (inside the gates, outsyde 1st beer was much, much earlier  ;)).

We'd then leisurely stroll along that side, mostly people watch, stop to be photographed...often, make initial acquaintances, peruse a shop or two, work our way around through the Greek section. Then we'd head to the Sea Devil, refresh our mugs, see more friends and then work our way back to catch the parade and then grab a great spot to take in the Chain Maille show (GO ELEMENT of AIR!!! ROWRRR!!  ;D).

From there, we'd scatter like a covey of quail (IF we made it that far together). I usually follow the drift of my boots from there - those who are familiar with the comic strip Family Circus know the maps of Billy's travels...mine is QUITE SIMILAR!

I always make a point of: catching Wine n' Alchemy (especially their cover of Led Zepplin's Cashmir), heckling/terrorizing th' Tomato Toss bloke, talking with th' Llamas (Tony n' Dolly doncha know), popping into Prince o' Wales fer a Prime Rib trencher, laying on the grass hill listening to Cast in Bronze.

Around dusk I'd sit at the Pavilion to have a cappucino and a cigar t' reflect on th' day thus far, then drift t' the Sea Devil to catch up with friends and to watch closing fireworks. Finish off faire and get ready for the night of partying ahead by jamming with Tartanic just outsyde the gates.

First thing I usually go to the Queen's Pantry for a Scottich  Egg & Coffee, then watch the dancing while I have breakfast.  Then to see Ravic at Creative Life Booksellers. Then go visit with Dan Thompson at his shop, then visit with Truly at the SeaDevil, then visit PurpleDragon at the Pirate Shop, then visit Blue at the leather shop.  (Gee, I hadn't realized I am such a social person.)  Then to wherever the wind blows me till noon.  Then it is the POV for the parade and the meet & greet.  After that I leave it all up to StudMuffin as by then I am just along for the ride.

We try and make pre-cannon and say hi to a few friends. Wander in watch the gate show. Then hit a few shops, friends and shows no particular order. Meet at the POW for meet and greet and parade. Find lunch, then back to wandering. Then the Sea Devil for Iris and Rose's Train Wreck and fireworks. Wander to gate and drive over to camp and hang till ready to go home if not camping. I never seem to make enough show, but always have fun!

Depends on the day, last season I had a different routine for Sat. and Sunday.

Usually, get up, meander down in the directions of the POW and then the Sea Devil, usually get stopped and deterred off in one way or another, see someone, stop chat, find a shop I wanna stop into. And that's usually how my day goes. Meander to the other side of faire, then head back to the Sea Devil. Go to POW for Meet 'n Greet/take photos of/after the Parade. Go out to Kastle K'Zar to see Blue, go back to the POW.
On Sundays though, last season, my routine was to get up and head in with Element of Air, let her go get her chainmaille, then wander off for awhile, then come back, take photos from my perch by Lord Randolphs, and take photos of her and a few other people dancing during the Chainmail Show. From there, we usually wander off to see Chris (EoA's boy) and then usually to the Sea Devil or POW.

Who knows how it will go this season? :)

I usually go only once a year because of the distance from Dallas. So, I spend most of my time wondering around, looking at shops, eating, and stumbling on an act that looks interesting. If I come across one of my Scarby friends then I have to stop and talk a little bit.

Last year I went with the Scottish Regiment, so I had to interrupt that with gathering for parade and then marching. Not sure yet if we are doing that again this year.

If there is some special event I might make time to be there. Last year it was the Antiques Rogue Show.

Like Sir Richard Bear at Scarby I have places I have to be most of the time so my day is not all that flexible. At TRF I can just relax and do whatever I feel like at the time.

I do TRF from the door of my booth watching the world stagger by. TRF is by far one of the greatest people watching places in America.   ;D  I'm directly across from the POW so I have a great view of most of the front section of the faire. I don't get out of the booth much, so I'm not able to join you at the POW that often even tho I can see you. Need to speak to my evil boss.. oh, wait, I am the evil boss.

My day starts about 8AM & often ends after 8PM, which makes for a tired little rencat. But it's worth it.

I go in, I wander, but in the recent trips (over the "years" of being a time traveler), I'm on active and passive search. Passive search for any interesting shot, passive/active for another version of a shot made in a previous trip, a "sought for shot in the catalogue". Example, sisters enjoying the faire, such as surveying the jewelry counter. "Comraderie", taken in the mid 90's, is another shot in the catalogue that I am always looking to recreate.

And then there is active, where I am looking for a particular personalty. If I recall correctly, "Portraint of a Warrior" was made within 30 minutes of arrival:

I try to be in position for Lord Randolph's show.

But the parade at TRF is not high on my list (it is at Scarborough); maybe I just haven't found the right angle yet.

As the day moves on, I try to search out in the active phase familiar faces.

Even though their style from trip to trip may catch me off guard.

As the day moves into evening, it becomes easier to find people entranced in like activities through friendship

or love.

I may pick up a souvenier earlier but it will probably be later when I finally buy something from a shop, either a figurine or artwork.....though on last trip, I bought my katana. And eventually, the light fades and the day ends.

Usually if I make it in time for opening cannon, I watch the opening show, take pictures.  Then a lot of last season I would hear the drumming of Tartanic so wander to the right to catch their first show.  Then from there I just continuously wander taking pictures, stopping to chat with friends, then wander taking pictures.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  Also somewhere in there is stopping for food and drink throughout the day and possibly a show or two.  I always like to catch Sound and Fury when I can.

I'm a planner so we usually have a pretty good idea of what we're going to do & when.  At Scarby we're there a lot so we alternate planned weekends & wandering weekends.  For TRF because we're only there 1 or 2 weekends planning is much more important IMO.

Everything doesn't always go smoothly & we do make adjustments but its well worth it to us to plan the days.

This past year was our first time to go. ( 1001 weekend )  Sat. we wore mundanes and was taken back in time. We wandred in and out of shops, caught a few shows, and drank plenty of fluids ( beer,Dr. pepper and a little mead ). I don't remember eating anything that day.  The next day we wore our wedding garb and felt right at home. Sadly both days were like whirlwinds. My neck hurt trying to take it all in. We went back Celtic Christmas weekend and took it more slowly that time. I can't wait for the time that we can kick back and wander around willy nilly. This year We hope to meet up with some of the fine people here and enjoy our selves even more.

Well last year was our first together and we spent Sat. working off a hang-around and taking in sights. We even had one guy ask if she had kiled me as I was trying to return to my coma leaning against her. Sun. we spent actually enjoying more of the things to do and actually remembered more of it. Hair of the dog my arsse, it didn't even work. This year we plan to enjoy all and plan to try to make it to cannon even.

Well, when I'm not working, I'm stalking. Yep, that's right. I stalk the faire. I put on my game face and walk. Normally it takes me to the Sea Devil, where I don't watch the shows, but get into as MUCH trouble as possible. I hit the meet and greet at the POW, and after that, who knows. I don't shop much, and I do a fair amount of eating. I do a LOT of drinking, and LOTS of running into people.

But mostly, I stalk and perch...

Let's see, at TRF my day usually starts after cannon, frequently that is what gets me to finally get out of bed.  Usually stumble in the gates around 10:30 or later and head straight for the Sea Devil.  Much talking and drinking ensues.  I wander to get food, see Cast in Bronze and visit with my family at the Dark Cloud booth, get talked into walking parade and am tuckered out after that trek!  I always end up back at the Sea Devil and actually spend much of my time there.  Yep- I drive 1200 miles one way to hangout at the pub most of the day.

I usually can only make it to one or two TRF weekends a season, unfortunately.  I have three sets of friends that I can go with at different times, so I never have to go it alone, but I did go alone one year.  Anyway, my preference is to arrive at cannon and leave after the fireworks.  I go in, get a picture taken, buy a program, and prefer to go counter-clockwise so that I can hang out for some time at the arena.  There are plenty of stops for beer, a chicken on a stick, a beer, a steak on a stick, a dram, a turkey leg, a beer, etc...

Wake up. Ask Ambard if it's before cannon. He says yes. Wonder how long I can still lay under the covers and still fool myself that I'm trying to make cannon. Get up. Start cooking breakfast and getting ready at the same time. Decide whether or not "hair of the dog" is needed. Usually have a little drink either way, especially if there's Kahlua for the coffee. Start putting on makeup. Usually cannon goes off around now.

Walk to the gates. See people. Pester Var and Lawrence for delicious beer. Make plans that may or may not come to fruition. Wander around. Drink beer. Swill water. Swill Teach's rum because I've usually run into him by now. See a show, if the one I want starts around now. Buy something I don't need and probably can't afford. Stand perfectly motionless and unseeing or hearing while 3 people scream my name about 3 yards away from me. Drink more beer. Swill more water. Wander over to POW either to watch the parade, or after watching the parade, depending on where I was when it started. Talk to more people. Eat something. Get photographed while eating. Swill more beer. Have 3 people laugh at me for standing motionless while 3 people were screaming my name 3 yards away from me. Wander off. Catch Sound n' Fury. See more people. Make myself annoying to Teach, swill more of his rum. Pirate Auction and/or last Cast in Bronze show, if I get there. Sea Devil. Fireworks. Some of Tartanic's outside show.

Wander back to camp. Rip off bodice and boots. Hang around in my Renn drawers with the excuse that it's dark and no one can see me. Start cooking dinner and drink more. Complain that it's cold and remember that I'm still in my Renn drawers. Wander camp talking to people and/or hang out by the campfire. Go to bed.

After years of attending TRF, I'm not sure I even have a ritual.  I arrive sometime between 9 and 10, purchase a program (or bring one I have from previous weeks).  Wander ... take some pictures ... shop a while (especially if I have an item of garb I am interested in acquiring).  Catch a show or three, try some of the great food and sample some of the brewskis.  The things I do and the order I do them in varies with each visit to New Market Village.  It's a wonderful thing to have the world's largest ren faire as your home faire.  So many great things to experience and each day is a new and different adventure.

son: this is the best day of my life!   :)

son: can i go on the bouncer thing?

us: not right now

son: this is the worst day of my life!  :-[

hour later....

son: can i go on the bouncer thing now?  ???

us: yes

son: this is the best day of my life! !  ;D

wash, rinse, repeat!

Ah, you're consistent in your inconsistency.

There are 3 of us, my son, who is 13 now so who knows what he will want to do this year, my husband and myself...so we pretty much walk through the gate and whoever is in the lead picks a direction and then we just walk until one of us either sees something they want to look at, hears something they want to listen to, wants something to drink, wants something to eat, needs to go to the privy and/or sees someone they want to say HI to or talk to...sometimes the other two will join in on whatever it is, but sometimes they just patiently wait until it's time to move on again.  ;)

The only thing that we ever "plan" to do is to go to the POW after the parade for the meet and greet.  Other than that, we just wander and do whatever comes up!  ;D

I normally wake up about 8 am (or stay up through the night... XD) and go into the festival early, cause I'm a geek like that (and proud of it!)
Then I wander around for the entirety of the festival, talk to random people, etc. Last season I took to wandering alone for a lot of the festival. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I pretty much just go with the flow of things.
Things I def. have to do every weekend though:
Sound & Fury
Wine & Alchemy
Tartanic
Iris & Rose
:D
And at some point during the festival I like to see the Washing Well Wenches and pretty much whatever show I happen to stumble upon. ^^

Its funny to see that our day at faire is not unlike most everyone elses.

We are usually always up before cannon, but we hardly ever make it to the gate before 10a.  Theres breakfast to make, morning grooming rituals, bodices to lace up, breakfast dishes to clean up.  Rarely has a day gone by that I haven't had to turn around halfway to the gate to retrieve something that was forgotten (Usually the tickets).

Once we are in we are as hapless as everyone else it seems.  During the first 4 weeks our first stop is usually the hair braiding booth for the women folk to get their hair up.  (The last few weeks is hot chocolate spiked with rum). We usually see a few friends just by hanging out there.  Once the hair is all tied up we usually only have a short time before the parade and meet/greet at the POW.  If the princess is still awake then we will most likely be heading to the German village so that she can play with the faeries.  Plus the little restaurant back there is not too bad given its operated by a ren faire.

After that its an aimless wander from mug fill to mug fill.  We try to catch a show when we can.  There are so many excellent shows at TRF.  I'm not too interested in the Joust so we rarely visit the arena.  I do stop to listen to Iris and Rose if they are singing when we pass the sea devil.  The wife will try to do some shopping.  She usually has some item that she tries to find which may steer us on a certain path.

Once the day is over we head back to camp to get dinner started for the group.  Once we've eaten and cleaned up its time to sit by the fire and reflect on the day.  Play a little drum, a little guitar if present.  Eventually we move around the campground and say howdy to our neighbors.  Sharing drink and tales.

A little of his, a little of hers...then something new. It's never the same, thought the show I always aim to see is Sound and Fury...More so I love to shoot the breeze with them when they can chat, buy Richard a beer when he goes to visit his MANY ladies working about and just milling about faire. Outside of that, until Ded Bob get's some new material, they are my favourite. Not hating on the Bob...just my opinion. I mill, I eat, I hit on women voraciously...I burn my hand getting a wax hand made for friends...EVERY TIME!..usually because I'm hitting on the woman there and don't notice how far down my waxed arm is until I feel the bite of the new hot wax upon non-prepared flesh. I Sherwood, I make the French listen to my newest French jokes (always so nice about it too *Do you know why France asked Euro-Disney to stop with their nightly fireworks display? They were tired of their army surrendering every night.* It's all subject to change, but one of the best times I had was getting split up from my group and just wandering around for 8 hours. I reconnected with people that day...and got asked too many time if I worked there and could I have my picture taken with so and so, ect. I either looked like a hobbit that day (long shaggy hair, cut off perioud pants..it was highly muddy that day and I had forsaken shoes) or I donned my hat, bandito mask, rapier and played Pepe', Zorro's brother, the very gay blade...FABULOUS.

Hey Shandi - I'm not sure, but I think Lady McArthur's Fiery Faire shoppe sells some type of chutney.

I hope "Haggis" tastes better'n it sounds cause I'll try anything once.

Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'pluck' (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally boiled in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours.

Haggis is delightful- do you like corned beef hash? It's similar, though with a finer texture.

Come find us in camp one morning- more than likely we will have some going for breakfast (and you cant beat it as a hangover cure!)

Well, I can't remember where I got it, but it's kept on the stick with breading/oats...like a corn dog or a scotch egg.
