Title: Does anybody belong to this group?

I have a question I'd like to ask serious, hard-core historical accuracy nuts, but I really don't want to join another online group.  I was hoping somebody might ferry my query there!

Thanks!

Gem, I think you're out of luck.  Post the question anyway if you will--we might be able to help.

Well, ok, although we've sort of puzzled over it before.  I'm wondering if anyone has any insights about the white pleated thing in the neckline of Promenade:

It doesn't look like anything I've seen anywhere else, and the Baroness and I were undecided about whether it was supposed to be part of a smock; the idea of that  makes sense, but it doesn't seem to resemble other period smocks.

I am of two minds on this.

#1.  It's not a smock, because the partlety-thingy goes under the ruffle, and I don't believe I've ever seen a partlet that was worn under the smock.

#2.  The rest of her gown has Italian elements, she could also be wearing an Italian-inspired camicia.  The pouffy sleeves certainly look like it.

I think I'm leaning more towards #2.

Remember that this is a tapestry: the details are not going to be as good as on a painting, and may not be accurate anyway.  My take is that the white edge with the pleated look is her smock.  More of it can be seen up the sides of the neck opening.

The garland bit round her neck MAY be the neck edge of a partlet, or it COULD be a necklace.  The lines down could as easily be strings from a necklace as the edge of a partlet.  Go with what you are happiest with, Gem.  After all, it's a fantasy garment of the era, rather than an accurate portrayal of something someone actually wore.  Whatever you choose, it's gonna look fantastic!   ;D
