Title: Des Moines Renaissance Faire
Post by: Celtic Lady on June 26, 2009, 06:29:32 PM
Has anyone heard when it will be starting or for that matter any info for this year's faire?

Thanks, Jack. I've been checking there but was wondering if anyone has heard anything. It seems like it takes forever for websites to be updated. I'm still waiting for MiRF to update their site.

If it's anything like MNRF, you'll get the full list of entertainers two weeks after the faire has started.

Just wanted to mention an error on the Des Moines RF site in the entertainment section.  Molly & The Tinker will not be performing at this faire over Labor Day weekend.  Per the Tinker, they will be at Bristol for the whole run, including the full 3 days of Labor Day weekend.

So, who's going this year?  David and I will be there probably 2 out of the 3 weekends. (we either skip the first or last).
We're looking forward to seeing folks again, pray for good weather.

Sir Morgan and I will be there for at least 1 of the weekends. We won't be able to make it for the opening as we'll be in Michigan for our wedding shower. I'm thinking that it will most likely be the second weekend... as of right now.

Congrats! Hope you get a lot of useful goodies!  Will you be hosting a Ren wedding or get married at faire?

Thanks, Rowen. We're getting married at faire. We have 5 attendants (my son as bestman, my sister as my matron-of-honor, my son's girlfriend as my maid, my brother-in-law as groomsman, and my nephew as the jr. groomsman). Including us and our attendants we will have about 40 - 42 people (as well as the many uninvited "guests" who will be attending faire... I say that in a good way). Our reception following the ceremony will be at the Feast of Fantasy that MiRF has. Since I have a large family (cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family members) and cannot invite them all to faire we are having a separate reception the very next day. Those that wish may come in garb. Everyone is looking forward to it. Just 2 months 3 weeks and 4 day until the wedding.... but who's counting.

There will be the Bonny knees contest again this year?

I would love to attend but the dates conflict with MRF.  I also notice that it conflicts with KCRF.  Has anyone involved with this festival thought of holding it earlier in the year, such as end of May and June?  This way it wouldn't compete with the two largest fairs in thier area.  Just a thought.

I might be able to shed a little light on the subject:

There are two faires in the Omaha area, and two in Iowa (IRF, Dubuque) during the month of May, so I think the area is pretty well saturated for faires during that time. The site for the Des Moines faire also tends to flood in the spring, which would lead to all kinds of problems, obviously (last year they had well over a foot of water in the main area of the site, the bridge was nearly washed away, etc. Not good).

The September dates work well - the site is gorgeous at that time of year, it's finally getting cooler outside (with the exception of Labor Day weekend), and September is historically a dry month in Iowa. Having it in June, July, or August would be exceptionally hot and humid, rainy, and would conflict with a multitude of huge Iowa events (RAGBRAI, Iowa Games, Special Olympics, to name just a few).

October is also out, as the site is used for Halloween events for Sleepy Hollow Sports Park. Really, September is it for us, and it is the only faire in the state during that month. Plus, it's only three weekends, and both of the faires you mentioned run multiple weekends as well.

I hope this helps clear up why DMRF is held when it is.  :)

The schedule for all three fairs would be problematic if you are working them.  So I am mighty glad to be a Playtron.  ;D
With a mundane work schedule that leaves me with only 2 weekends off per month, as well as a budget that does not stretch to allow for gas+hotel+gate+impulse buying at either MRF or KCRF for more than 1 or two weekends max anyway, I have a few open weekends to attend DMRF too.
Too bad July/August are just too darn HOT,  Otherwise we could have fairs all summer.
Anybody know where I can get a bodice chiller? Preferably glass?

We're still not sure when we will be there but we will be there. Sir Morgan's job is creating such unsureness for everything. The only thing that is for sure is that he has the time off for our shower and the wedding.

I hope to see everyone out at the Faire this season!!! The site is looking very lovely, with more grass, more plants, a cement floor in the feasting hall, a roof on the guild hall, and more! I was thrilled to see the site looking so good this year! They've added shade to the children's stage area, and the minstrel stage. Plus, the weather is supposed to be perfect this weekend, no rain, mid-70s, and low humidity! Can you tell I'm thrilled about the weather!!!!

Stop by the Royal Court area for an audience with the Queen and King. The weapons talk is at 1:30, Fashion Show is at 3:30 (you'll get to see me in my renaissance undies!). The closing gate starts at 5:30, and is rated PG-13 this year.  ;)

2009 Dates, Hours and Themes:

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, rain or shine. (Show up early to catch the opening gate show, starting around 9:45 a.m.)
September 5-6-7 - Highland Fling - Kilts & Celts
Honor is not dead at the Des Moines Renaissance Faire! Partake in the pageantry of noble knights vying for fair damsels. Compete in games of skill and chance and show off your prowess. Collect tokens of esteem and be dubbed "the most chivalrous man or woman" by Queen Catherine. Proudly sport your clan's tartan colors and proclaim your heritage September 5-7! All hail the Queen!
September 12-13 - Royal Romance - Favors & Flavors
September 12 and 13 may also be called the "weekend of wine, women, and song" for these are the days to celebrate the best in grape-stomping, romantic-nuzzling, and nuptial ceremonies. Come, join in the authentic English court dances, savor fine wines and ales, and steal kisses from the one you love! Yonder comes my lover!
September 19-20 - Buccaneer Pirates - Treasure & Pleasure
On September 19-20 the good folke of the Des Moines Renaissance Faire invite you to walk the plank! The 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Come rub shoulders with the scurviest dogs you've ever met this side of the high seas. Or toss back a tankard with the prettiest and liveliest
wenches in all of Christendom. Aaargh, mateys!

   I cant' wait!
David and I were planning all 3 days this weekend, but my grandchild's first birthday is on
Saturday and we have a Party at 3, so we will miss the first day  :(.
Rest assured we will be packing up the new puppy (he loves everybody, but needs to get used to crowds since he is going to be with us at Celtic festivals) and heading out to Des Moines tomorrow evening.  See you all on Sunday and Monday!
 Huzzah!

Note to parents of furry babies: the Directorie of Renaissance faires site  incorrectly lists 'Pets not allowed', they are, but there is a lot of (necessary) red tape.
Those bringing dogs or cats, make sure you schlep along vaccination records.  Your vet can print you a copy if you need one.  Dogs need a muzzle (I'm still looking for one that will fit a 9 week old Scotty)

Well I'm there each weekend mostly walking around the place and hanging out at the cove or the faries.  You can't miss me, I'm wearing a brown loose corset style top and brown pants, let not also forget the fox tails on my left hip and packs.  I'm there from 10 to 6.

We had a lot of fun Sunday and Monday! Our Scotty puppy charmed both Ladies and Lords alike, as he was free with wet kisses and cuddles.
Sir Clisto! It was an honor to finally make your acquaintance!  It was most gracious of you to pose with our pup for a photo op.
Lady Keno, I do think I saw you near the Brad Nelson memorial a time or two...my husband's nieces and nephew kept me busy the entire time on Saturday, but we did make it over to see the tree house (it's getting prettier each year).
It does not look like David and I will be able to attend again this year (boo).  David has a Celtic festival to set up for next weekend in South Dakota and then we will be getting ready for the western festival in Papillion on the 26-27.    If anyone can get down here for that, let me. know.

Rowen,

It was a real pleasure to meet you and the family as well. The puppy was indeed a great success with everyone, and, seemed to enjoy all the attention. If there was any way at all to get in the queens favor, that was it. Sorry I kind of "wisked the pup away" for that moment. Even us nobles need to schmooze at times. It doesn't hurt, you know. LOL... I hope you enjoy your coming weekends activities. It would be nice to see everyone again soon.

To everyone else,

On another note, it was also a grand weekend with weather to have been the best. It was nice meeting everyone that showed up. I was not there for court on Monday, having pressing matters to attend to back in York, but am there for the rest of the run. So, I hope to see everyone there once again. It was such a great time. I will be posting pictures in the next two days from opening weekend. Stay tuned for my update when they will be available for viewing.

Hail everyone,

I just finished putting up my Des Moines Renaissance Faire pictures from opening weekend this past weekend 9/5-6/09. Was it ever a great time once again working with these good friends of mine in the court as well as seeing everyone else at the faire. The weather was excellent in the low 80's. For anyone interested, just follow the link below. Then click on the Des Moines link once there.

This coming weekend I travel back to Des Moines for week 2 and with a new piece of garb. Hopefully it comes by Friday. There are also suppose to be a few other Bristol people showing up as well. It should be a wondrous weekend. Let's pray the weather stays just as good. So, if anyone is going to be there, just send me a message and let me know.

Have a super week,

You are welcome good lady. It is fun  to do. But, you and lady Isabella do a fantastic job with that program in educating everyone on the fashion and dress. I always enjoy it. It was funny since I had one gentleman in the audience that told me at the end "you were this close to getting away at the end". He was laughing and on my side. LOL... But in all honesty, I like what everyone does and the work they put in to everything to make it all come together. So, I want to thank you as well. And I am Looking ahead to tomorrow, Sunday. I have to agree it was another great day in general. Humidity was up just a bit, but all in all nice.

So, is anyone else going to be heading out for a visit?

Sunday was pretty fun, long but fun.  I had half of the crew gone cause of some mishaps but I love that the youngest found a good friend her age.  Did some swordfighting and babysitting for some old ren friends.  I got another piece of clothes to make this week before the next weekend comes.

Also, I have a TON of shots from this past weekend number 2.  I am going through them now and picking out the ones I will post. i will let everyone know when they are ready. See everyone this coming weekend.

Hail my friends,

I just finished putting up week 2 of my Des Moines Renaissance Faire pictures from this past weekend 9/12-13/09. It was Royal Romance Weekend. It was another wonderful weekend, although a little more humid. We also had a few visitors from Bristol who had a fantastic time, as well as being able to be a little part of the court with us. Lord Marvin and Lady Judy graced us with a visit. Marv played my man at arms. They have expressed their thanks and will be returning again. So, for anyone interested, just follow the link below. Then click on the Des Moines link once there. Next, go to the bottom of the page  and click on the box for week 2.
