Ahoy all :)
I was wondering if anyone had any links that discussed hats of the 1700s.
I have my entire pirate captain ensemble pretty much figured out except for the hat (its florida so yes I have to have a hat). My original plan is for some kind of cavalier style hat that might have been procured from an 'trade' with other ships.
Most hats from the 1700's are almost all the same basic hat blank, just how many sides are pinned up is the variable.
1 side for a cavalier,
2 sides for a bicorn
3 side for a trcorn (ala Benjamin Franklin)
Another which might be more 1600 would be the captain kids version which i use. It's like the cavalier with the one side pinned up but instead of on the side its the front. I picked this for my outfit cause i wanted to be different, most you will see will have the cavalier style or the trycorn.
Here is a pic of mine even though over this season i have got alot of favors that now dangle on the front.

lovely hat Sir Garath
thanks for the input Dona Catalina
I guess I will stick with my standard side pin cavalier, being as it would be slightly weird to wear my singlasses, I need the sun cover provided by the traditional style.
hmmphh
oh well, I wanted to be different but guess ill have to stick to H/A
I wear mine similar to Sir Garath but not pinned in the fron. it's slightly off front over my left eye.
BUT if you want a really cool link on hats go here http://gallery.villagehatshop.com/gallery/ (http://gallery.villagehatshop.com/gallery/)

Now i do love my hat for one good feature. When i go to kiss a ladies hand since i am so tall i an normally bent over some i can keep eye contact cause i have no brim in the way. But than again i don't like to many things in my field of vision cause you never know from what direction someone will launch an attack at a peaceful pirate like me.
Hehehe
All fantastic reasons Sir Garath
Lady de Laney,
thank you for the wonderful link.
I have a feeling I will be losing many hours perusing those pages
Its already making me think
maybe I could go for a gainsborough or a riding hat, make my character a little extra flamboyant, after all she is stepping into town after being on ship with a messy crew for so long.
What would I do without my ren family
I love my big feathers in my hat, i have met many new friends as they are going pfft pfft as i move my head and sweap them across there face hehehe. Than there are the porcupine quills for when you need a quick weapon and you find you are without a sword or a knife. But i will try and get a more recent pic.

well if you go to the colorado ren faire forum area you will see where we have had a hamster invasion well i had to be different and bring a rat, hope by next year it will be a more real looking rat. Oh i did break and someone gave me a hamster he is hiding behind my brim but he has an eyepatch and a sash.
