Title: How do you get your off season fix?
Post by: bellevivre on July 15, 2009, 10:15:12 AM
There was a very sad 3 years of my life where I couldnt go to faire due to work... so, on my off hours, I'd watch the webcams while OTHER people were playing, and listen to RenRadio.

Last night I found a computer game that is based in an actual faire... that was fun!

I listen to Ren music more than 'mundane' music...

How do you get your fix? Help! I'm an addict!!

What's the game?!  Link us up!

Webcams?  Really?

Lots and lots and lots and lots of Ren music.
Staring into my garb closet.
Reading Ren books.
Watching Ren movies, no matter how bad they are! ;D

Yes, please let us know what game that is.

I don't think I've had another cds other than faire groups in my player all year.  Also, simply spending time on boards such as this always helps.  Taking quizzes, learning more about the time period, saving for garb and other things I know I will purchase.  That's what gets me through the day. ;D

Sounds like a fun game!! I might have to try it...

I get my off-season fix from these forums and ogling new garb online (which usually I don't buy....)

I'll have to check out the game. Sir Edward and I get our fix by attending and planning gatherings with other faire friends. Nothing like a party at the camp grounds in your backyard with most in garb, all with mugs, ren music on the ipod and lots of good times.

Being that the family and I can financially go only once a season to our home faire of TRF, we go to AARG once a month.  AARG is the Austin Area Rennie Gathering and everyone dresses in garb and socializes while having fun, kids are welcome too.  Then faire music and YouTube videos are popular as well in my house.  The family and I are camping for the first time this season over the All Hollows Eve weekend.  I spend my mornings at work planning out the show schedule I want to see for about the last week or so, wanting to make sure I get in all the shows I want to see.  Thanks to Teach I want to see more then I think I'm gonna be able to see this year.   ;)

July's AARG is at Sherwood Forest faire Grounds.  But I'm not going to be able to make it out to Sherwood, my part time weekend job keeps me from that.  So I was hoping any people would want to get together at Dog and Duck any ways, maybe ithers that can't make it out to Sherwood but could to Dog and Duck.  Normaly AARG is the 3rd Saturday of the month when faire is not in season at Dog & Duck at 7:30 till when ever.

Last off season I got super hooked on the podcast Marc Gunn does and found a bunch of great groups and great music I'd never heard.  That and I searched everywhere on the web for photos from my faire and found a ton of great stuff.  I also compiled a ton of period music for my singing group.  That and I sing madrigals off season too, but that would be the dork in me.   ::)

I generally spend the rest of the year slowly but surely editing the mountain of photos I took, and listening to the CDs I got :) (no, still not done with the photos even though CRF is almost here again)

I do what some of you have already posted.  I watch ren related movies, listen to ren music,  plan (but don't alway do) garb projects. Spend lots of time on the net at ren related sites, especially this one, and spend lots of time on facebook keeping caught up with other ren folk.

Now that I'm a member of this board, I can get my fix by coming here. I also read "Renaissance" magazine and ogle all the photos in it or look at various websites. Listening to music helps too. And also I watch movies like "Braveheart" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies and remember all the good looking men I saw at the faire dressed in their kilts or in pirate garb.

I comb craft stores like Joann's and Michaels for sale fabric and notions, bid on vintage middle eastern jewelry on eBay, and order folkloric patterns on Amazon for that next addition to my costume. The rest is spent sewing and choreographing dances with my friends. ^_^

I browse some renaissance garb online and sometimes research about the period. I also play medieval/fantasy games like Oblivion or Stronghold 2. Listening to the Renaissance Festival podcast by Marc Gunn helps as well as talking to other rennies about fun times at faire and planning what to do for next season.

Besides watching period movies on DVD, I peruse old threads on the various Renaissance/Renfaire forums to which I belong. It's a good way to relive previous seasons, revisit friends and possible friends, and renew my faith in mankind because Rennies are good people. I was terribly saddened when the old Forum went down down in flames... there was a lot of heart there.

I have 5 months between faires. When TRF ends to when Scarby starts. Then from when Scarby ends to the start of TRF.  It takes me a few days to get over the end of faire, You can say I'm in a state of disbelief that it's over.    :o     It breaks my heart to put our ren things away.   :'(    I, just like everyone else here I watch period movies. I love to watch season 1 and 2 of the Tudors. Listen to CD's I bought from faires. Read my Renaissance Magazines over and over. Visit website that sell garb and things. Go to Hobby Lobby, Joann's, and Micheal's always buying something for future garb. My son's girlfriend and I go to this area in north Dallas where there are these warehouses that sell mountains of fabric. Buying swatches for ideas.

**aaaah, the dreams of pretty garb runs thru my head**

Sometime before the end of this month we'll be getting our camping gear ready in the garage. Then next month make sure our garb is packed. Then just a few days before leaving for TRF I'll buy the food.

It's all the little things, this forum, my family, friends and planning for faire that helps me survive.

What is an off season ?  I guess I am just lucky as I don't really have an off season, between local gatherings in NC, and the M'Crack Family Gathering Schedule, I am at at least one faire every month and another Irish, Scottish or Celtic Games, Dinner or Music event every month as well.

I put on a pair of tights and pour a goblet of mead.  Pop in a Blackmore's Night CD ("Renaissance Faire" of course).  A friend comes over dressed up in a pair of denim shorts and a "Wenches Want Me" T-shirt (gotta have 'danes' to get the experience of fair).  Another friend stops by wearing jeans and a chainmail shirt over his bare pot-belly.  His wife sports a VS bodice two sizes too small.  I dress up the dog like a Jester and the cat gets fairy wings.  We order Dominoes and yell to the pizza delivery girl "Wench, pray thee, why thou be 30 min late"?  Next we go out onto the front lawn and have a joust with our light sabers and shout "Huzzah" to any who pass by.  Then at sunset we fire off a cannon to close the day.

If you want you can move in and join us, lot of houses for sale in my neighborhood...Lord I miss fest.

I usually check out these posts, look for new Renfest websites & work on my own site.  I'm now on the board for Tulsa's King's Champion Medieval Faire.  We have monthly planning meetings so I get a good fix there.  A good period movie or 4 over the winter helps sustain me as well.  My last 1 was the Fellowship Of The Ring.

what webcams, which faire, how do i see them? i never knew any faires had webcams!! great.

for me, i actually enjoy not getting too much a fix during the offseason. i really enjoy posting, talking with other rennies, and doing occasional fixes at celtic flings and irish flings here and there. then just let the anticpation build up and then i can enjoy the faire that much more.

I go to Middle Eastern drum (doumbek) class once a week, and the http://www.isisandthestardancers.com/ (http://www.isisandthestardancers.com/) studio has a hafla about once a month.  I know it's not all "traditional" belly dance or drumming, but we are now in full "Scarby-prep" mode ;)

I've also been watching Legend of the Seeker, which I know is not "period" but I love the costumes & fight scenes!

Sadly, I don't.  The closest I get is with various computer games (WoW or Puzzle Pirates or others of the sort).  I will listen to faire music though, and you'd probably see some familiar tunes on my playlist (though I really, really miss Shanty Raid-io).

However, faire is for getting away from the fantasy life completely, and back to reality.  So I try to keep them separate as much as possible.

I found that now that I've gained friends who are involved in faires actively I get my off season fix so much more easily. Like, a bunch of us meet up once a month and we'll bring swords and choreo our own fights while chilling and having fun. I have a lot of faire friends at school now, so we'll chat about faire through the year. Our school also started a Midieval and Renaissance Research Society, so I also can go to that and we'll do all sorts of fun stuff like make garb during the year and its so much fun.

So I've found that now it is much easier to get my fix. :D

Our faire season runs from mid-May through the first week in October.  During the off season after Christmas and the New Year, we try to visit a faire in a warmer climate.

So far we have been to BARF in March, 2007 for St. Molden's Weekend and going again March 13-14, Tennessee for Rendezvous, May 2008, and this year we're going to RenDezvous at Scarby in April, 2010.

So much garb, so little time..........

My videos from '08 and '09 Faire, CDs and DVDs of faire groups, YouTubing various faires all around the country, the fan club pages of my two favorite RenFaire groups, finding new Renaissance/Celtic/pirate groups to listen to, and RF.com of course. :-) Here recently I've been really lucky; my favorite two renfaire groups, the Jolly Rogers and the Musical Blades, did a show together at a bar in February, and the Musical Blades are doing another show at a bar and grill this Saturday! I actually get to wear my garb *twice* in winter!! Of course, then I'll have all spring and summer before getting another live Faire fix at the end of August when KCRF starts back up.  But I love my faire videos; without them I'd miss faire so much more!

My fellow Dragon Slayers keep me up to speed by sending me photos.  I maintain our Dragon Slayer FaceBook page.  And last but not least spend a lot of time here on this website.  I too have not been able to fly down to my home faire in Arizona for two years now due to work, school and my truck dying on me and have to get a new vehicle.  Not next year though I will be in Arizona for 2011 President's Day Weekend.  WOOOHOOO!!!!!

WHAT OFF SEASON!!!

We start in late Feb, and run through Memorial day, go do a couple faires in June and July, prep in August, then faires in September through Dcember, then Dickens stuff.
Of the whole 2 month we have off, we are catching up on things we shot during the other 10 months.  Glad I'm not on cast... then the rest of the time would be gone as well.

No rest for the wicked  ;)

Stalk well...

Wow, are you traveling far, or do you just live in a really great area?

As far as my off season, I wound up being in four shows and a choir concert during the 6 months off (May-Oct in central FL) this year. And I made new garb. And now in my Dec-Mar off season, I went to the Dickens Faire in SF (again making new garb) and I will have another show (which is why I can't get to BARF until Apr). And I'm making lots of garb for Costume College.

But in April, I'm moving back to CA, so I'm going to BARF, Scarby, and the socal Pleasure Faire! I'm soo excited!

A little of both :). We've got Scarby as our local faire, TRF and Sherwood within an easy drive - those cover 6 months. Last year we made road trips to CO and MN. This year we're going to FlaRF (Deerfield Beach), CO, and want to try KC. Not sure we can manage another drive to MN though, that was about as long as I want to sit in a car! Great faire though, just a long way away!

I only have 1 month (Sept) that we're mentally uncommitted on between Feb & Nov. Of course finances have to remain in place, but I love to make plans. ;)

There's a group of 5 of us - Steve, me, Richard, & Alan from Galena, and Carol from Wisconsin.  About once a month, Carol comes down to visit, stays with us, and the 5 of us have a Renaissance weekend.

It starts with Carol and I hitting all the thrift shops in the tri-state area, to look for things for faire such as mugs, pearl jewelry, fabric, baskets, and peasant blouses to wear with our garb.  Then on Sunday, the 5 of us dress in garb and have a Renaissance feast.  We play CDs that we bought at faire from the different performers and even try to have as much of a Renaissance dinner that we can.  Last time at Richard's house, we had bangers and mash.

This will be the third weekend so far we've had this winter, and it is so much fun!

The Loveland Castleteers get two faire fixes each year, usually in March & November.  Folks come from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and even farther afield.  The best part is; no need to drive home!  We sleep at the castle, most of us.
We get to wear all that heavy garb that is too hot in the summer faire season, drink, eat, drink, sing, drink, flirt, drink, tour the castle, and there is always plenty of ale & mead.
Come join us!
Check out the Castleteers forum just under Ohio.
The more, the merrier!

Wow, Lady Renee, that looks like fun! My wife and I had discuss having a "Ren Night" in the winter months w/ food, candles, and wine (eer more ale for me ;D).

I usually start planning a trip or two for faires and work on putting together some type of garb esamble. Being that we are still new, there are always things and accesories that we need to get!

First event of the season is coming up for me soon! St Patrick's Day is just around the corner. I have a new kilt on order that should be here by then, so my off season is almost over! Woot!

This is the time of year that sucks for me, I will not get any RenFaire action for another 6 weeks or so and am too busy to travel to one. Darnit!

Thanks to Teach I want to see more then I think I'm gonna be able to see this year.   ;)

Is this gathering very strict, or could anyone who is at least trying to be somewhay period show up? My husband and I are new to this, and we would love to try out a smaller gathering!

I haven't even been able to work on garb with the new puppy around. So I am experiencing a bad case of withdrawal.
For the AARG, I think you would need to talk to Queen Bonnie.

Sadly, it is getting closer and closer to time for all of us to think about where to get our off season fix.

For you Northeastern pirates, a fix will be available in late Feb 2012: The Pirates Other Salty Ball, to be held in northern Ct, for 2012 featuring The Crimson Pirates and The Brigands, in a night of song, merriment and debauchery.  Details later this year.

Being a Rennie is, for me, a part of the theatrical side of me that has been allowed to come out and play more in the recent years. Doing belly dancing is part of it, taking acting classes is part of it, going to performances can be part of it. They all can contribute to getting the fix.

We went 2 years ago Dona, much fun. Dressed as pirates. Most fun was the pet costume party. Bring your new baby! :)

If you are going, let us know - perhaps we can catch up with each other!

Well, unfortunately October 15 is the only day we could get an appointment for Lady Sybil to be fixed. So we won't be able to make it. maybe next year.
