Needfire's music is a unique mix of all original high energy modern rock and traditional Scottish and Irish music. This five-piece Texas-based Celtic-rock band combines the talents of an award-winning Grade I Highland bagpiper, Celt-rock fiddle, and tribal didgeridoo with electric guitars, bass and drums.
These guys are awesome! We saw them perform at the San Antonio Highland Games and Celtic Music Festival. Great show!

The Rogues- Roguetrip
I need to get their new CD this weekend
Fairport Convention ~ "Liege And Lief"
I'm listening online to accuradio - Classical - Baroque Masterpieces.
Currently playing Bryn Terfel doing an aria by Handel.
Been listening to the Lost Boys recently. Can't get their "Wake Up Sleepytown" out of my head -- great melody. Also, love their choral and acoustic version of "Ode to an Unfettered Fowl" (Also known as "Free Bird")!
I've been going through a sea chanty phase lately. Current favorites include
The Rambling Sailors (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=238929959) - "Wanderlust"
Jack Salt (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=344062292) - "A Noggin' of Rum"
Bounding Main (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=68746343) - "Lost at Sea"
The Rogues American Highlander... I've had it since last Saturday and OMG, their best yet!

Donal Hinely (http://www.myspace.com/donalhinely), Blue State Boy. *g* Donal's been my happy place for the last year, honestly.
He plays the glass harmonica at Scarby and the Norman Medieval Faire, and later this year he's going to be at St. Louis and Ohio and Alabama and TRF and the Dickens on the Strand festival down in Galveston. At the end of the day at Scarby, his last set of the day, he pulls out his guitar and plays music off of his Americana CDs, and I am in lurv with the music, but good. We organized a house concert for him here in Norman earlier this month, and I can't stop listening to BSB.

I'm definitely planning to make their July 4 show up in Frisco. Yay!

listening to my many playlists here:
http://www.playlist.com/user/6227954
I really need to go update them, due to the fact I have so many songs and some don't work anymore. :P
The usual classic rock and metal. In my cd player. I have Judas Priest, and in my cd-rom right now as I type. Molly Hatchet. You know the southern rock band with the album cover art of a usual Viking or another medieval swords man killing a dragon or some other kind of monster. Sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd, but a little heavier context and sound.
~Hard Luck Woman~
I have become addicted to this song and put it on my playlist.
Pirate Joe sang it to me the other night and I love it *swoon*
A good old KISS ballad. And another song I like of their's which many will probably want to hang me for saying this, but "I Was Made For Loving You." A sort of pseudo disco rock tune, but for KISS to do a cross over in styles like that shows some musicianship. But, the rest of KISS is what I really listen too. These are just two of the one's they usually play on the radio besides Detroit Rock City and Rock and Roll All Night. Any other tune has to be requested or done on a special radio show. I mean Kiss has many tunes, better than these.
'Layla'--unplugged version. The guitarwork and piano together are a thing of beauty.
*sigh* I mean...it's CLAPTON!
And I really liked his boots in the video :D
The other day they were playing stuff on the radio from when Clapton was with Derek and the Dominoes and it sounds really good even though he was basically just starting out. He's always been a great guitar player. I also like the album "From The Cradle" and anythin when he was with Cream is good.
Clapton is still GOD.
If you are too young to know what that refers to, Google it.
*raises hand*
I KNOW! I KNOW!
Duane Allman did the opening guitar riff.
JIm Gordon did the piano coda. In the late 1970s, Gordon complained of hearing voices in his head.
In June 1983, he was convicted of killing his mother. During his trial, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In May 1984, he was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison.
He's still there.
Two discs from Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes and Sun Giant (EP)
I'm really digging this band.
A collection of Strawbs, "Halcyon Days." Many songs would be great for RenActs to cover, this one I could definitely hear someone doing at Faire. They would need to change out the 60's vernacular of "blow away my mind" to something like "unsettle my mind," but otherwise it's a wonderful tune of enchantment:
Witchwood ~ David Cousins
I dropped down in the witchwood
To see what I could find
The trees had taken time out
To blow away my mind
All that I could hear there
Was the sound of my own voice
But the music it was making
Was nothing of my choice.
The interwoven branches
Were laden deep with snow
A rainbow shone so softly
To show which way to go
I observed its many colours
Till my eyes were rimmed with frost
I tried hard to trace my footsteps
For I feared I might get lost.
The witchwood started singing
With a strange unearthly sound
My fingers grew like branches
I stood rooted to the ground
And the spell is still unbroken
I am still her bidden slave
Till a casket from the witchwood
Bears my body to the grave.
I just discovered iTunes and all the Ren artists available. Talk about feeding my geek! The current cd in my car contains:

My hubby totally approves of your taste in music. ;D And even I like KISS to some degree...particularly "I Was Made for Loving You".
Currently, though, I've been listening to Queen. As far as I'm concerned, there are other good and great bands, but nobody tops Queen. :)
currently up on my ipod beach boys surfing usa
in my truck cd player Nickelback
Currently listening to pirates radio @ http://www.live365.com/stations/captainbillybones
Oh yes. Queen is a great. And not for stuff like We Will Rock You, or Bohemian Rhapsody, but Ogre Battle, Liar, Keep Yourself Alive, I Want It All. I'm In Love With My Car. The whole Queen 1 & 2 albums/cds. The list goes on. It's just too bad they don't play their other stuff. There's alot of good tunes out there that are over looked by radio because they only do what makes them money, not want the listeners want. And I'm not just talking Queen and Kiss. But many other rock bands of the 70's and 80's. Right now in my cd player I have Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell and Bob Segar's newest album face the Promise. And they have tunes they don't usually play on the radio, but are awesome. For the most part the stuff on the radio lacks substance in lyrics and musicianship.
Just discovered a new band that has me fascinated. Apocalyptica. They do heavy metal with CELLOS. They have a YouTube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnAzkh9kn0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnAzkh9kn0) . One of my other favorite bands is Wolfstone which uses bagpipes to play metal influenced Celtic music. I keep thinking how great it would be to combine the two. What a sound that would be. Cellos, bagpipes, whistles, electric guitars an bass, drums with heavy rock beat.
If I only had the equipment and place to practice. I don't think getting the players would be a problem.
I'm finding that Iron and Wine's "The Shepherd's Dog," is playing the most in my house right now, sort of neo-psych/folk stuff. Great for cooking with. Out in the car at the moment, it's Country Joe and the Fish's "Electric Music For the Mind and Body." Love that ornate psychedelic style of electric guitar.
Listening to Albanach Unleashed!!! :D

Halleluyah Lyrics
We're all but little children
Playing in the sand of time
Exploring its meadows
Finding little hills to climb
This world is like a garden
And we are the flowers
Some bloom in and out of season
Some never bloom at all
Will someone please tell me tell me why tell me why
Innocent babies have to cry
The reason the reason we may never know
Just plant good seeds and let them grow
Let's move move move to the rhythm of life
And accept the things the things we cannot change
Come on let's groove groove groove to the rhythm of life
Just have a little faith the future shall be great
Hold on hold on hold on
Justice must be done
Before the break of dawn
Justice must be done
Before the day is gone gone gone
With deep meditation
And a firm concentration
We will fight the struggle
The battle must be won
Throw down the heavy load and
Think for awhile
If we can make a difference
By just a little smile
Then we've got the power to make
This world a better place
Pick up the pieces
Put them together
Cuase we're moving we're moving from the past
Soon we'll be singing
Free at last free at last
Let's move move move to the rhythm of life
And accept the things the things we cannot change
Come on let's groove groove groove to the rhythm of life
Just have a little faith the future shall be great
Hold on hold on hold on
Justice must be done
Before the break of dawn
Justice must be done
Before the day is gone gone gone
We will be singing glory hallelujah
We are free at last
Glory glory glory hallelujah
We are free at last... repeat
Bless your heart
Bless your heart

Nope, you're not alone. :D Much to my hubby's and sons' dismay, I like country music as well (Trace Adkins, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, etc...) I like a very wide range of music, from classical to hard rock, pop, country...I could do without rap/hiphop though.
Last few days, I've been listening to the Masterharper of Pern CD, and to Burton Cummings. :)
Glad to hear that................Yesterday on GAC on tv i was watching a thing called superstar sessions with Brooks and Dunn were they spent a full h our playing some of their videos. It was awesome.Just like you I to like country, southern rock, and blues......but like country more.

Southern Rock is one of my favorites, country a 2nd. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Black Oak Arkansas, ZZ Top just to name a few.
Right now, I'm listening to Ozzy's Diary of a Madman and his other solo albums.

Everyday at work I listen to a Celtic cd. While my Solitudes Celtic cd's are great, my favorite songs come from Enaid & Einalem. They chill me out like nothing else. Huzzah.
I have I believe either the Solitudes company of Celtic music on cd or some other company to that same effect. And your right it's surpirsing how good it is even though not performed by well known Celtic artists. Usually I've bought my Celtic cd's from those relaxation kiosks in stores and so the brands are always different. And i swear evry time I always find a Celtic cd I like, but I have so many already I always have to make the difficult decision of to buy or not to buy. At this point I opt not to and wait for faire to take a listen to the musicians there and buy their cd's. Support your local musicians first and foremost.
savage o'connor (Kevin Tyler) from MichRenFest, and E-Muzeki Sindh.
Both great, gettin ready for fest.
Elvis Presley Project Playlist
Recently its been the Dropkick Murpheys, a weird but good combo of celticish punk-rock, with the banjo, tin whistle, mandoline & bagpipes all making an appearance or two in thier music. Fave song so far Johnny I hardly knew ya.
I've lately switched to listening to Stompin' Tom, as well as the Rankin Family and the occasional bagpipe CD. :)
Currently a compilation that I arranged of Loreena Mckennitt and The Dead can Dance. It has been getting some heavy playtime here at the fortress.
Nice segue-ing material, Sir William!
For those that want a little something different, look for a group called the "The Cherry Cokes". Their a group from Japan that worships Flogging Molly. So think of FM but with lyrics in Japanese! (It's really quite good ;D )

Nyaz - Nine Heavens
Elvis Costello - Momofuku
Discs I picked up at faire last weekend from Djilia Phralengo, Cantiga, and Crannog.
Dang there was some some good music at MIRF!
Djilia Phrelango for now..they were so darn good!
Soon to tear open Owain Phyfe and Cranog. :) :)
The drummer is exceptionally good in Djilia Phrelango, she uses the stage as her bass drum and has a
tambouring laying on the ground so as she stomps the tamb is also being played. Awesome stuff, and the addition of the guy from Gutterpups and the mandolin player gives the band a fully sound, and the singer and guitar players skills have just gotten more refined over the years. It was towards the end of the day when I caught their last tune, but man they rocked it out. I look forward to seeing a full set later this season.
really ,can't say enough about djilia phralengo, what a great group, and I really enjoyed the addition of "johnny Red" on Bass. Actually all the music acts at Michigan are first class, Owain, cantiga, crannog, kevin tyler, and seeing Tartanic again was awesome. I do miss the lane acts though,it's hard to enjoy crannog at the pub because of the busy atmosphere, I much preferred a more intimate setting better than the cacaphony of the pub.
If ya ever get a chance to see "Carl Asch" or his band "Empty hats" you would be amazed. He is a classically trained musician and has an awesome voice. His "compass rose" CD has a cover song on it from the scorpions called "still lovin' you", that sent goosebumps down me arms. I know he plays "Sterling "and "Parf" and possibly some other east coast festivals, but secretly would love to see him in Michigan too.
I agree! The caliber of musicians at MIRF just can't be beat!

Musica Royale Renaissance Hits and Near Misses
This is the band that plays at the Queen's Gazebo at MiRF. If your into truly period instrumental music give them a listen. I'm glad I did and their so good I bought a cd.
Of course other period players at MiRF that don't really play to a general audience, but more for the art are Owain Phyfe, A Reasonable Facsimile, and Julie Hussar (The Harpist). And another great instrumental pair E-Muzeki.
But, I think all bands at MiRF are great at what they do, I just want to let people knwo that there are a few bands that tailor their music specifically for the period minded.

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
Song of The Lakes Poets Say
A Michigan based band, that plays sea shanties, and sort of Celtic based tunes. A good band, I've seen them perform here in Wyandotte at their Heritage Days. I own several of their cassettes since it was afew years back since they've come back around.
"The Willow" - EJ Jones
Crannog No Band Is An Island
"The Broken Hearted Bride," a new electric Strawbs offering. Very nice work, some of it, especially "Aphrodite's Eyes," and "Call To Action," which features some Middle-Eastern-style violin playing.

Twisted Sister
TWISTED SISTER? WHAT KIND OF BAND IS TWISTED SISTER? WHAT DO YOu wANT TO DO WITH OUR LIFE?
I wanna ROCK! ;D
A mix on Pandora.com they are Playing Beyond Fear... LOVE Tim "Ripper" Owens voice. While I have always been influenced vocally by Rob Halford of Priest and Bruce Dickensin of Maiden, Ripper is one of my huge favorites who I admire a ton.
Love Pandora.com as I can put in what I want and they play it. So I have my Hair Metal mix withthe likes of Poisen, Faster Pussycat, Dokken, Ratt, Lynch Mob. ANd then change over to my metal mix of Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Hammerfall, Symphorce. ANd then to my mellow with Blackmores Night, Enya, and then onto the New Wave of Belin, Blondie, Devo, Adam Ant.
Oh Nevermore just kicked in.
Lady de Laney, you and I must have been brother in sister in a previous life or it's just cool coincidence we like the same bands well, there's a few on your list I've never heard of or not a big fan of but have heard. Keep rocking on and mellowin out. Today I was listening to Blind Melon, the album with the song No Rain on it, it's one of the few alternative band cd's I have in my collection. Yeah, you figured me out, I Wanna Rock is my favorite song by Twisted Sister. We're Not Gonna Take It, is good, but I hear it too much on the radio the aforementioned not so much. Ripper sounds a good deal like Halford I seen him live here in Michigan at The Palace of Auburn Hills, was a good show, he come ridin out on a Harley like Halford use to. And of course Bruce Dickensin, I didn't know he was a pilot as well. I seen him on a show about the Top 10 Warplanes in the world and he was praising the Spitfire fighter of course from England. I just found it weird that he'd be on such a show about some thing historical. I figured he'd be out partying, or driving a fast car. Pretty cool. I've found though most fans of metal and the musicians themselves are quite cultured people, and I'm not flattering. I'm stating a fact. To prove that the stereotypes aren't always true.
I dig Tim Owens, but don't like Rob Halford much... Dunno why.
L'Ham de Foc. No longer together.

White Zombie's re-make of Black Sabbath's 'Children of The Grave'. It sounds cool as all get out. At the beginning of the song, it talks about the 1969 murder of Sharon Tate. I think it's Sharon Tate....
Really odd surf bands...
The Ghastly Ones - They are awesome!
Los Straitjackets - They even have a Christmas album.
I just made a recording of myself playing keyboard, first the hymns in double organ, then the hymns in double strings. I made it as a Christmas gift for my Mom, who is 84. She paid for 10 years of piano lessons for me, so it's the least I can give back to her. So, yeah, I had to listen to it, to make sure it was ok. ;D

I just made a recording of myself playing keyboard, first the hymns in double organ, then the hymns in double strings. I made it as a Christmas gift for my Mom, who is 84. She paid for 10 years of piano lessons for me, so it's the least I can give back to her. So, yeah, I had to listen to it, to make sure it was ok. ;D
That was very sweet of you Lady L.I'm sure your mom will love this gift of yours that you are about to give her. :)
Thanks Lord Wriothsley, I hope she likes it. I haven't played in 35 years, so I was a *bit* rusty. It's not perfect, by any means.
It's the effort that counts. And that's excellent you can play so well after not playing for so long. There was a time when I didn't play guitar for months during the summer and when fall and winter come, I couldn't even remember how to play certain songs. I wish I had a musical memory as good as your's. I can remember trivia and science and history like nothing, but when it comes to music I have a hard time recalling what I've learned. So you mother should appreciate the hard work you put into that piece.
Aw, thanks for understanding, Poldugarian Warrior!
It turned out pretty good, with a few mistakes here and there. My Mom liked it, too.
My friend is a wonderful musician, he plays several instruments and sings. He said it would come back to me, although it took a few months. I just kept at it, starting with easy beginner songs, then progressing to more difficult pieces. I am so glad I got back into it, with his encouragement.
I suppose I am now at "intermediate level." :)
Being right handed, trebel clef came back to me much faster. Left hand/bass clef was a bit slower.
I hope you continue, Poldugarian Warrior. I love guitar. ;D
I can only play one song on guitar, I never had any lessons on that. My friend plays guitar really well and I love to listen to him.
Thanks!
I still play off and on. One thing I wish I would've learned is how to read actual music, because it gives you the timing of notes. I read tabulature, but unless I know the song I have no idea of the timing of notes so I can't play a song I've never heard before, and make it sound correct. But, I never really aspired to be a professional musician back in high school I had ideas of being in a bar band, but with responsibilities of real life, I let that dream go by the wayside.
That's good, hope you keep on playing. You could probably teach yourself to read music. I have started to teach my grandaughter, who is 8. I found some good info for beginners on the internet. So far, she has had 4 lessons and is already able to play one easy song. She needs to practice a lot more, of course, but it's coming along. It's never too late!
Have a mix mosh of what I am listening to as of late.

That's great Lady L, hopefully she sticks with it. I know that playing music for me at least is just plain fun. It's something that doesn't even need to make sense it just needs to sound good to you as long as your not trying to market it or playing covers. But, there are more oppurtunities for musicians and sound editors now than ever before. So maybe one day she'll be the next big thing.
;D
We all start somewhere and you never know where you will end up. Be it timing, who you know, being in the right place, skill level, luck or intent, which all plays a part. She also loves dancing and singing in a microphone.
Have * no idea* where that comes from...lol.
Cool, you sound like a cool grandmother, she's lucky to have you.

Right now (as is so often the case), I'm listening to some prog on the Aural Moon station. ;D The song on right now? Lotus Parts I-IV by Ashra.
Some old 1960's era made albums of Renaissance and Medieval music. Very period. They sound as if they were recorded in castles long ago, and the voices are the ghosts of the past. Very cool stuff for that era. Most are from the Encore Records store in Ann Arbor Michigan. They were used for study, but I find them quite entertaining.

That is one of my favorites, Ambios! I always play their "Auga de Mayo" CD on the way to first day at faire and then as the final CD on the last day of faire on the way home.
Here's a lovely little nugget from 1970, from some TV show, apparently. It's The Kaleidoscope, performing their electrified version of "The Cuckoo." David Lindley (the originator of playing a guitar with a violin bow) is on electric guitar. That's my dear friend, Sol, on lead vocals. He used to play the Faires back in the day with bellydancers, one of the best middle eastern musicians ever (although he's just handling vocals here, he's fabulous on oud, saz, kanoun and nay).

Here's one from 1967 where you can hear Sol wail on the saz. Very 60's, baby...take a bite of my resin!

And finally, because of the Woodstock anniversary, my favorite version of "Wooden Ships," which kind of captures the sadness and the beauty of the era...Grace's vocals always give me chills in this one. Youtube has some incredible gems.

Lovely! I really love Bert Jansch's version of Ewan McColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face..." It's more upbeat than this one, even and way faster than the familiar Roberta Flack hit. Oh, yes was firin up Crannog and the Gutterpups a few days ago. I got them strings for the Mando, but found the tuning pegs were damaged, so had to order them from my local shop and there's a large crack in the bowl back, and the pegs have to be cut to size since it's so old and all sizes then were smaller and not standardized. It seems like a lot of trouble, but a modern mandolin that looks like the one I have would cost close to a grand these days and this one after repairs will only have cost me 2 hundred, which yes I could've bought new, but the new one's don't have the charm and tone of older instruments and no stories. Mine is actually from the turn of the century. So two weeks ad I should be jammin out on my Mando. Unfortunately, but not really too unfortunate, I won't make it the first weekend to fest, because Saturday Selfridge Air Force Base is having a free air show and the headliners, The Thunderbirds among many other good groups are going to be there. So even though I do love fest, this air show only comes around evry two years. And who knows how long they keep it free, and my dad and I have made it sort of a tradition to go evry time it comes around. But, you can bet I'll be at fest soon, I bought another season pass this year and plan on making all three days of Labor Day weekend since I have that as my vacation week. Sorry to rattle on, but I'm quite excited, so many good things happening this month.
Thinking of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (great band, everyone, check out the link Ambios posted), a wonderful Afro-Celt band is Baka Beyond, I was introduced to them through Fiona Richie's show, Thistle & Shamrock on NPR.
