Title: Spicing up my garb!
Post by: tigrlily64 on July 25, 2009, 01:23:21 PM
Last weekend, I was very excited to attend faire in garb that was all made by me. (Well, except for the Tevas.)  However, while I'm very proud of my accomplishment, I felt it lacked a little personality.  I was just looking for a few suggestions of accessories I can add to make it more me. I am wanting to lean a little more to the fantasy side of things, since I will be bringing my shoulder puppet from A Midsummer Knight's Dream with me next time.  All suggestions are appreciated!  And without further ado, here is a pic!  (Sorry for the headless-ness, I'm a little wary about posting pics online.)

How about a few flashy purses/pouches for your belt, or maybe some glittery trim for the skirt?   You did a great job on the basic outfit, now add some bling! ;)

Huzzah!  You're off to a great start!  Now you want to add layers--think in terms of color, pattern, texture, and shine.  As an example, I'm going to post a couple of pictures of me in very similar garb (it's actually the same bodice, just reversed)--a bodice, chemise, and one skirt--plus accessories.  You'll notice that one of the keys to each outfit is the headgear.  We can't see your head so we can't tell if you're wearing a hat, but I'd definitely start there.

Have fun!  And remember, most of us develop our garb over several seasons, adding new pieces as we go.  I make lots of my own garb, but I also love to support the merchants at Fair, so I'm always on the lookout for those special pieces.

I always like a double skirt, with the top skirt hiked up so you could see the one underneath.  And if you got some type of muted pattern that featured those colors plus another, it would liven things up a bit.

I also agree with pouches and some jewelry.  Plus a hat with feathers!

It's definitely about the layers. My first set of garb was extremely basic: a skirt, chemise, and bodice. I wore sandals.

Then I got another skirt, another bodice, a different chemise...to mix and match. And then it sort of exploded.

This isn't my first set, but it's from a couple seasons ago:

I think what really makes it pop are the contrasting skirts.

Then you've got a friend of mine. Her outfit here is nice, it matches, but it's really basic. But I bet if she had my red skirt on and an actual chemise (instead of the tank thing she has on under the bodice, she was working and trying to stay as cool as possible) and a belt? Insta-wow. :)

So yes, layers. :)

You can add a tail or some ren pins or bells and I agree with adding a hat.  If you are a playtron with a persona maybe something that goes with the character you are playing like an apron, musical instrument or hand basket.  I would start by shopping at your local faire and try some extra stuff on.

Layers definitely sound like a key component to interesting garb.  I have another skirt I could wear under that one, but it's also blue.  Perhaps I could make a new skirt (hooray for more garb!) in a contrasting color, maybe a kind of fluttery one like analise's red one.  I definitely need some sort of headgear...Maybe I'll support the merchants next time I go to faire!  I also like your bracers, gem.  You guys have given me lots of ideas!  Thank you!

This is one of my most comfortable and favorite outfits to wear, some days I add more to it and some days I don't.Alot depends on how hot it is too.

Is it the same shade of blue? Because I wear two skirts, both green, but one is mint green and the other is forest green.

Here's a pic of my garb from before it was fully completed, but it's the best I have of the skirts without a farthingale:
