Title: Leatherneck Tartan
Post by: Serenity on July 30, 2009, 03:37:03 PM
I'm new to the whole sewing thing, but one item I am sure I want to make is a skirt of Leatherneck Tartan since Hubby is a Marine Vet.

The question is: do you have any vendors to recommend for said tartan?  I tried Googling it and the least expensive one I found was $40/yard with the average being $70.  Being new to this DIY thing, I do not know if this is normal or if I'm not searching correctly.  Also, I need to know who is reputable.

Does anyone out there have any advice?  The skirt may have to wait until next year if I cannot find less expensive fabric, which is fine, just means I'll have to save up (or ask Santa for Christmas :)).  Thanks for your help!

(Sorry so longwinded!)

Ask for Rocky at USAKilts.  He is the owner, and a great guy.  I buy all my kilts and Scottish products through him.

Good quality, authentic tartan *is* expensive, particularly if it's not a common variety (although I'd think the Marine tartan would be more widely available than many), so those prices aren't unexpected.  The weavers who make tartan generally do so in quite small batches, which is one factor that drives the price up.

Factors that can bring the cost down include using a wool blend, instead of 100% wool, so you might look in that direction, too.

Milord's kilt is from Celtic Croft (www.kilts-n-stuff.com), and they do carry the tartan you're looking for, but I can't figure out how to find a price on just yardage.

I knew I could rely on you for a good explanation, Gem.  Looks like I'll be asking Santa for some tartan this Christmas.  Thanks! ;D
