Title: Leather Jerkin
Post by: Beaudan Tocks on August 09, 2009, 02:43:10 PM
I just finished this up at 2:30am this morning...  I'm not quite sure where to post this so I might post it in multiple sections. I have some Ghillies I made for M'Lady and Ren Boots I made for myself posted in Crafts & Projects if you'd like to check those out.
I found this Chocolate Brown deer leather in an Antique store, of all places, stuffed inside some old crocks, for $10 per hide and bought 4 of the 6 or 7 they had there (I wish now that I would have bought them all) I wasn't sure what I was going to use them for at the time but I think I finally put them to good use.
This "Jerkin(?)" is the first garment I've ever made. It looks a bit wrinkly in these photos, but the wrinkles come out when I have it on and it looks awesome... I'm sure me dear departed Mum was guideing me along a bit.  One question I have is... What makes a Jerkin a Jerkin? Does it have to have the little extensions on the top of the arm opening? I'm thinking about adding them... not sure yet though.

Comments and Critiques VERY welcome...

I'll try to get M'Lady to take some photos of me wearing this and post them at a later date.  I'm in the process now of making her a bodice out of some left over Elk Leather. Ready Mum?

You are welcomed, Beaudan!!!  Your workmanship with the leather speaks volumes on a  job well done! Leather is not a particularly easy medium to work with.  It takes a great deal of planning and execution to get it right the first time because one is working with a  skin that tears and scars if a mistake is made.

HUZZAH!!!!!

The Earl and I plan to be at the Opening Cannon (22August) of the MNRF. I will surely get photos of this Leather Jerkin, Kate, if I see it worn.

I'm hoping my hubby will have that reaction...I'd make him one, if he wanted to wear garb!

Great job, BTW!

Beautiful.
I particularly like the way you finished the lacing on the back when it meets the collar.

Did you glue the edges of the front?? I can't see any stitching.

Where did you find the buttons??

Very awesome.
I really like the color palette you stuck to.
If I may ask, how are the pants kept up?? buttons? lacing??

Thanks Dragonwing!
Auryn:
The pants are leather and high waisted. I made them with a double cross-over flap with leather lace thru grommets. I'll see if I can get a picture tonight to make it a bit clearer.  I thought for sure they would have stretched out quite a bit, but this pic was taken after 2 days of wear.  I did have a small mishap though... I took a lashing from a beer hawker and it must have weakened the leather slightly. We got back to the hotel and I went to stand up off of the couch and felt a breeze...  I had a split across my right cheek...  had to do an emergency repair

beaudan!
all lovely caramel and honey! just great, very very nice!

I'm glad in particular to see i'm not the only one wearing a belt long like that, tho mine's a different color. I got asked why my belt was so long, and I just said "because I can" ... or something
