With each castle, post a global map with a pin/castle icon on its location, to include all the others you've covered. This will show how wide spread the building craze ranged, and might help in avoiding any possible duplication, as folks find castles/festungs/fortresses under different names (a great hazard in documenting castles of the Outremer)
Do you keep a running list of the Castles you've covered? If so, might I inquire as to how many of them were Crusader castles, or Castles of the Outremer?
I've never looked at the locations. Sorry didnt pay attention to the fact they were links.
I do however look at the links for more pics and info on the castles that I find most interesting.

Sorry if I'm a little confused by your answers; but the Google Earth coordinates would enable you to map pin the coordinates on the global map contained in google earth.
My google earth is almost a solid block of map pins over the European continent.
Frankly I'm doing good to keep up with castles by country and I don't have seperate files on who built them. But I try to note that information on my posts if I can.

What an incredible collection you have assembled here Dona. Some of these images are just incredible. I must thank you too for sharing as I sincerely appreciate all the time and effort involved in bringing all these magnificent structures to this forum.
To be honest, I just look at the pretty pictures!
But I do appreciate the text you post about each
castle so I can look more into each castle if it's one
I especially like.
More Scottish Castles!
I love what your doing.
I love it too Dona! No suggestions, just wanted to thank you for your efforts as I appreciate it!
Dona, I've watched your castle post since day one and I'm still amazed. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you all for your kind words and suggestions.
I'll try to keep the thread as entertaining and informative as possible.
any request for Halloween? It's coming up Saturday.
I'm not sure about the 31st, most might ask for Vlad's castle, but I have a request for your regualr thread.
Although not your picture typical "castle", you might look up:
Cave de Tyron
http://maxime.goepp.free.fr/site.php?site=tyron
Fortress building by Crusaders (Templars) at their best, using what God gave them in the defense of the Outremer.
Is anyone still reading this thread? No one commented on the ghosts or the skeleton featured recently.
I visit every day! ;D
For some reason it feels like you should read the short history and enjoy the pictures, no comments required, because they kind of clutters up the thread...
I check it out everyday. Usually one of my early things to do.
I appreciate your work and really enjoy the castles. Especially since I'll never get to see most of them in person.
Thank you !

I should add that I often do a little more research with the introduction you provide. Like the one castle that surrendered and the person they surrendered to broke the surrender agreement and hanged the defenders. Well it seems his brother had been held prisoner in that castle, so there was a little more to learn.

well-- comments are what this thread is for. Thanks all!
An interesting side note for the castle of May 14,2010, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus was the Roman who conquered Palmyra.
The reason the town's Roman ruins are so extensive is because he stayed there for an extended period while he tried to settle the question of which of two brothers would be king of the jews.
Kasteel Wissekerke from May 21,2010 still has its 10th century dungeons and cellars but the public is not allowed down there to take pictures. I understand its below the waterline.

Jiminy! How do you keep track of the castles you've posted? Are you sure you haven't repeated any? Regardless, I love this thread.
Well between Google Earth map pins and this site's search engine, I'm pretty sure there are no duplicates.
I'm also reasonably certain that I won't run out of castles since there are 3000 in Belgium alone.
Hi all. For the month of December I would like to do some requests, a Mid-Winter gift from me to you of sorts. Please post your requests here, or you can PM me.
Thank you to all castle fans.
I don't have any particular castle in mind but something in Germany might be nice, with all the pines and snow.
I know it probably doesn't count as a castle, but I would love to see something about Wentworth Woodhouse.
Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade I listed country house near the village of Wentworth, in the vicinity of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It is a 17th century palace and unfortunately does not qualify for the castle thread. But please keep making requests.
Not a specific castle, Doña Catalina, but perhaps appropriate: I love the shots of any of the castles in the snow. Something about it just melts my butter!
I LOVE the Castle of the Day thread, I just thought we were supposed to look and not comment? Please keep it going!
I dont have a preference for castles....except maybe I like the Irish ones a little more than others.

What exactly qualifies as a castle? Is it the age? Fortifications? Just totally curious.
I, too, have no specific requests. I can't imagine there's a castle I could want to see that you haven't included already. Any random Google castle searching and I'd then see what I could see here!
Thank you to Warrior Monk for standing in, also. Those were some great castles!
A castle is a structure originally built for defense as much as for living quarters. It doesn't neccesarily have to be living quarters for a noble. Some castles were built for town defenses and used by town councils, king's officers, etc. I try to limit myself to fortifications built prior to 1603. Castles that no longer look very castle-like qualify if their origins meet the basic criteria since the 18th century saw a lot of heavy remodeling.
If you have shown it, I missed it, but there is one on US soil: Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, P.R. Nimue and I visited there in `84. I've seen it show up in some movies as well (Amistad for one). It's one of our national parks as of 1961.
Thanks for the German castles Dona. Beautiful! You are right about the heavy remods, but still beautiful and neat to imagine the original structure all that grandeur grew around.
Thank you for the snowy castle pictures!! Those are so COOL, pun intended!
Any more requests? I'll do a few crusader castles in the next few days.
I'm partial to Welsh castles, although I am also a French wench. ;)
Thank you for the visit to the Castle del Morro! Our visit there in `84 was the highlight of our trip through San Juan )one of the stops on a cruise).
You are welcome. Now on to Wales....
I loved seeing a castle that you can actually stay in! Would it be possible to find a few more of those?
Your wish is my command!
I am still tryng to get everyone's request in. But please post recommendations if you have them.
The Castle of Chinon would be interesting. That is the setting for The Lion in Winter. Not a very cheery Christmas family gathering there, but l imagine it's much lovlier in real life. :)
Dona, thankyou. I'd done a quickWiki search just to be sure that was it's name, but you've found some wonderful pictures I hadn't seen. Especially love the views from the vineyards and the close up of the symols carved in the walls of the cells.
Love the interiors of the previous castle too. Gosh wouldn't you love to dine at that table by the fire, and wake in that gorgous bedroom. I could live there for sure.
Thanks- I thought Chateau de Roumont in the snow was pretty impressive too.
Yes. Beautiful style with that type of turrets. Very romantic. Makes you want to get the sleigh rigged up with bells and go jingling all the way.
Its amazing how much of the 'holywood castle' comes from French Gothis styles like that one.
You would be surprised how few castles are actually for rent. There are tons of places advertising to rent castles; but when you actually check it out it is not the castle. You would be renting a country house or a cottage next to the castle.
I am definitely adding "stay at a castle" to the bucket list. That would be so awesome.
Does anyone notice when I point out the castles that are haunted?
Yes, Ma'am... there quite a few that have things that go bump in the night... ;)
I caught Kronberg on GHI last night... watch the flashlight wiggle...
Yes. My thoughts are too that they al have one or more ghosty in residence. Wouldn't want to meet up with one of the dungeon kind though. A nice parlor ghost is more to my liking. :)
It'd be an interesting side link to read more about who they thought the ghosts were and what their backstories are. Not suggesting you take on any more Dona. Just brainstorming.
You know I do, just makes me want to visit them more!
As far as determining who they were, you would pretty much have to hope that one of them answers you, like Hary Brunette prisoner 374 did in Alacatraz.
There is always a lot of speculation.... but can anyone really know? Maybe someone else can start a thread on legends of haunted castles.
Kronberg looks decidedly delicious as a castle! It is by far my favorite, ever! (So far anyway!)

Yes. Makes me go over the pictures again to try and imagine where one might see a ghost. That hall way ? That dungeon ? By that window ?
I think I pay more attention when you point that out.
And thank you for all your work. I appreciate it a lot !

Love yesterdays Castle Balcomie and her whistling ghost. :)
Reszel Castle is a hotel with rtestaurant and bar. You can find it listed on priceline.com.
According to GHI, its not haunted.
Wow, Dysert O'Dea Castle looks like one solid fortification! It looks like a rectangular block of stone. I think I'd feel real safe holing up in there!
Bauskas is one of those castles that hosts a medieval festival. But I believe only the performers are expected to come in garb.
Wouldn't you love to attend and listen to all that glorious music in that setting? :)
Have to back track to Burg Teck on Jan 10th. Lovely. Really beautiful.
..and todays castle. How interesting that it now acts as a retreat and a place for learning with courses in music and interpersonal relationships etc. A nice setting for such a thing.
I got a kick out of the ice skaters on Batenburg's moat. What an obstacle for speed skating, WATCH OUT FOR THE DRAW.....bridge.
And to get the scope of Ranikot, you really have to see it in google earth.
-enjoy-
:D That'd be me for sure...oh look...pretty...*clunk*.
The photos of Batenburg with the ice and the fog were beautiful.
Ranikot is so bleak. Interesting and huge yes...but can you imagine living there?

But Its nice to know that I can count on you guys to step up to the plate.

Glad to see you are feeling better, Dona.
I havent been on this thread in a bit. Usually pop into the forum for a few minutes and then back out again.
Dona, I am glad you are feeling better.
I think ALL of the castles are AMAZING. :)
Today's castle is B-E-A-UTIFUL!
It really sent me to my fantasy mind...//thinks about writing more stories...or playing Fable...Or watching HP...or all three....
I am really glad that everyone is still enjoying the castles. My own castle is buried under 6 inches of snow at the moment.
Well, I just re-arrived here after a long, unplanned hiatus...
After I saw the title I said, "Hmm...."
Now I'm planning my vacations and these castles are mapping it out for me! XD

Yes, I enjoy the castles very much and check the thread every day! Thank you, Dona, (and of course to those who filled in for a few days) for the wonderful world castle tour you let us share in! :)
Bosjokloster Castle looks so....Swedish. How different from castles in, say, Italy!
Yeah, after a while you can almost tell which country they are in just by how they look. And then wait until you're watching a movie supposedly set in France and you shout at the TV "No way. That castle is in Romania."
LOL, Dona Catalina. Only you would be able to know that! :)
No, it will happen to you one day. I promise!
Dona, do you ever put any castle on here that they investigated on Ghost Hunters International? Some of them are truly amazing.
I also think its impressive that you can TELL where it is by the look of the castle! Thats dedicated!!!!
Actually, I have posted most of the castles that GHI has investigated if possible. I usually note what is supposed to be haunting the castle.
I will have to go back through and look.:)

I was thinking the same thing about Samitier Castle in Spain, posted on the 6th. What a setting. Looks like something from The Lord of The Rings.
...and the castle the day before that with the lovely icey forest all about. Gorgeous.
That is most definitely awesome!
There are people who specialize in lightning photography. They get this effect from using lenses and cameras with specific setting. I'm sure that Stalkwell or Vance could give us the technical details.

Well GHI covered the castle in San Juan built by Phillip II. We had previously covered that one as requested by Merlin the Elder. I personally don't think they got enough to label it haunted. Susan Slaughter is annoying with her 'feelings'
I'll step back in for the weekend, Dona.

Yeah--what's the deal with that? It must be a fake car (it almost looks like it's an inflatable). Maybe they were having a car show there?
Warrior Monk, that rocks. :) I've seen some of these places and they really are amazing fortifications. Really interesting to see this set against the timeline of the Crusades.
...you are giving me ideas for the rest of this weekend. ;)
I am glad you like it. ;D I just tried to give a broader picture of what was going on elsewhere in the world during this period. ;)
I have such a fun Castle planned for tomorrow. Can't wait to post it! :)
How very cool, Anna! Predjama Castle looks like it's growing right out of the rock cliff! I want to live there. :)
Isn't that an awesome stronghold. Love that you can slip out the back and get supplies to pelt your enemies with.
Unfortunatly it looks like Warrior Monk posted it earlier. I do a search on prospective castle names but somehow missed this posting. Ah well. Hope you all enjoyed the weekend's pics all the same.
Huzzah! Thank you Warrior Monk. :)
Did you guys pick some photogenic castles or what!
Thanks for taking over and doing such a great job. Luv to all.
:) Welcome back. Thanks for letting me take her for a joyride.*Anna hands back the keys to the thread*. Her tank is full and that dent is hardly noticeable. :D
Anyone think of ice skating on Bouvigne's moat?
Wow. What a location Fuzér Castle has. Talk about defensibility! (Not to mention the view!)
Yeah those stairs would be a deal breaker for me.
Blackrock Castle is very cool looking! And of course you chose an Irish castle for St. Patty's! Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

Yes! I've had the good fortune to tour Himeji Castle and although there are quite a few castles in Japan having similar features that date from that era, Himeji Castle has remained intact and is the most striking of them all. It is a real gem!
I need to dig up some more castles in Japan. I am hampered somewhat by the language barrier for the less well documented ones.
'belch? Matsuyama Castle' was done by the language filter. For some reason it did not like the actual text of the name.

I'd be all for easing the filters on some words. Oddly enough, some time back, I saw a post that employed ample use of the F-Word unfiltered, while the word describing a mother dog was changed, as in the name of this castle.
Anymore—with the exception of the F-Word—a lot of the words that are filtered frequently show up in cartoons, and certainly on network television.
I am officially giving up on trying to post any more castles in China. I can find names and even a few images but it sems that their exact locations are a state secret, especially the ones in Tibet like Kamba Castle.

Anyone notice the stone dice in today's castle? I want a set of those in my front yard!
I wish I could do an episode on the Castillo de Trives. But alas it is no more. It was razed after 1595 and replaced by a palace. The palace is now a hotel called Casa Grande de Trives.
The coat of arms is still on the walls.

How did you guys like that castle in France that was built on one of Julius Caesar's old cohort camps?
Now that's old! It's also very attractive and a B&B too. I could go for a stay...
What an amazing coincidence, Dona! I just watched a Rick Steves' travel special last night on the Camino de Santiago and Santiago de Compostela. I'm sure there was a shot of Castillo de Callosa en Sarria in it too. Then I check R/F.com this morning and you've chosen this very castle! The stars must be in alignment! :)
wow. I certainly did not know about that show.
With Malian/Mediolanum, I believe that we are back to following Julius Caesar.
For Tudela in Navarra you really have to see the satellite photos to get an idea of the castle's size and layout. Unfortunately most readily available photos are of the statue and only show the castle remains as incidental.
If I find a snow picture, I try to throw it in there. When the castle is white stone, sometimes you have to look close to see what is castle and what is snow.

I love the snow pics too but I've visited castles in the winter--all that frozen stone and often no windows--man, they are COLD! Our forebears who lived in castles were a tough lot! And they must have gone through a forest's worth of wood each winter for their fires!
The other nice thing about winter shots, tis that less foliage means you might get a better look at the castle.
I hope you guys aren't too disappointed by the ruins that are barely there. I find them interesting if for not other reason than to speculate why a castle was no longer needed in that area.
I haven't dug deep enough into the thread, but have you done any of the castles in Afghanistan? Including the Castle of the Infidel built by Alexander the Great.

Most of those are seventeenth century additions to discourage pigeons since the tower tops were no longer needed for lookouts and siege weapons.
But they are pretty much what pops into anyone's mind when they try to picture a castle.

One of you photography types needs to go to Hemishofen, Switzerland and get some better photos of the castle. Satellite photos show three walls of a trapezoidal keep and the remains of a round tower. But I can't find ground level photos.
Your castle today is so beautiful on the inside. Love that window seat. On the outside, though, it's so bleak. Someone needs to bring it some shrubberies.
What do you suppose the indents at the front were used for?
Quote from: Anna Iram on February 04, 2012, 09:26:29 AM...What do you suppose the indents at the front were used for?
Those roll up. It's the concession stand for all the warriors to get their tankards refilled, fresh arrows, and turkey legs... (sorry...I'm in a mood today...faire in less than a week :P)
Ha! That's what it looked like to me too. :)
I'm curious, though, if there is another reason. It does look as if it was open at some time.
Yes, I believe that was a cellar/cow byre that was once open to the outside. With the late conversion it was closed off far a wine cellar. All the entrances to the main keep were originally only on the second floor.
Cool time-lapse on today's feature...
DonaCatalina, thanks for your dedication with presenting these works of art/creations from history. The Castle thread is one of my favorite threads on the forum to view. :)

That first photo of Ortenburg Castle with the tents (May 10) looks like they were holding a reenactment of some sort. Very picturesque!
Actually, they were. ;D

In 1305, the local abbot sold the monastery to the Livonian Branch of the Teutonic Knights, who began construction of the fortress of Dunamunde.
An attempt by the Order to bring some culture to the region for sure.....lol! For those that don't know it, the Livonian Order was actually a separate entity for awhile and then was absorbed by the Teutonic Order after some rough times, although it still retained much of its autonomy in activities.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livonian_Brothers_of_the_Sword
or the book The Teutonic Knights by Urban.
Most of the ordinary people in the Baltic states, Latvia and Estonia in particular, viewed the Livonian Order and the Teutonic Order as oppressors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._George%27s_Night_Uprising
That antipathy is the reason why so many Order castles were reduced to rubble when the Teutonic Knights lost control of the territories. In 1481 the citizens of Riga attacked Daugavgriva castle and destroyed it in response to the Livonian Knights' efforts to blockade the river in an attempt to ruin Riga's seagoing trade.
I haven't gone through the whole thread, just wondering if you've done Caerlaverock Castle in Scotland or the Citadel in Sisteron France? I've seen the one in Sisteron, very beautiful and defensible and want to see Caerlaverock, my ancestral home.....I'll never be able to prove that one.
Great thread
Ian
Caelaverock was covered on October 18,2008.

I have not yet covered La Citadelle de Sisteron; but I probably will on the next pass up the alphabet.
Wow. The Citadelle de Sisterone (June 22) is one heck of an impressive fortification! I bet it's never been sieged successfully!
Love the 7/11/12 Castle of the Day.

I would like to have seen more photos of Plessis Josso. The layout makes me think that at one time it was much larger, or had another section of outer wall. But I especially liked the gate.
When I saw the photos of Burgdorf Castle (Aug. 8) I could have sworn I'd been there before. Turns out, the castle I visited was in Gruyeres, Switzerland, and the similarities in design and layout are noticeable. No surprise, I guess because they're not far from each other.
see..... I told you that you would begin to see regional styles in castle building. LOL.
Yes, indeed. :)
Thank you, DonaCatalina for posting the Castle of Gruyeres! That's the one I remember. It even had the silly mummy-like sculptures in the courtyard (4th photo from the bottom) when I visited. They looked really out of place but what are you gonna do? It's art. ;)
I couldn't resist once you brought it up. ;D
I love the Austrian castles. They are always in such picturesque locations! :)
Did anyone notice the Ritterfest on August 15?
Yes! And I was going to comment on it but I got tied up. I think it's really cool that enthusiasts in Europe use old castle sites for their reenactments. It's not only a perfect setting for them, but it keeps these important places and structures noticed, used and vibrant. I hope the respective governments continue to realize the importance of these sites and keep funding them!
8/11 castle Jaw drop!
Gina
Burg Gussing has some really cool features. I love the wooden spiral staircases and how about that wine cellar? That's what I need in my basement! :)
wine celler!
My favorite room
It's probably not kosher to call a castle "cute," but Kururi Castle (Nov. 7) really is! I want to take it home and put it in my back yard! ;)
Not unless it's a Jewish castle. But, yeah... I love the Japanese architecture!
Dona,
Do you have a list of castles that currently provide hotel, B&B, or self-catering over-night stays for guests?
When doing a Google Search, it seems like most of the results are in a town with a castle, near a castle, or even in building that are on the grounds of a castle --- but very few are in an actual castle.
Thanks,
David Baldock
Mostly you are going to find that the actual castles are NOT set up for sleepovers, especially if they are now museums.
I don't keep a list of castles with accomodations but if you google 'sleep in a castle' or 'dormir en le chateau" a few things come up.

Thank you for the "castle turned hotel" pics. They are beautiful.

since haunted castles came up....
And you can stay in the haunted castles--cool! :)
Thumbs up to 12/5/12 Castle of the Day. The interior is stunning.

more haunted castles to stay in coming soon.
Looks like Cerveny Kamen Castle, in southwestern Slovakia (03-JAN-13), had its red tile roof replaced with a gray-painted copper roof sometime before 2011.
There's a news article about the copper roof sustaining some wind damage in 2011 -
http://195.46.72.16/free/jsp/search/view/ViewerPure_en.jsp?Document=..%2F..%2FInput_text%2Fonline%2F11%2F04%2Ftbbv48j162880.dat.1%40Fondy&QueryText= (http://195.46.72.16/free/jsp/search/view/ViewerPure_en.jsp?Document=..%2F..%2FInput_text%2Fonline%2F11%2F04%2Ftbbv48j162880.dat.1%40Fondy&QueryText=)
I imagine replacing that much roofing would be quite expensive, with either tile or copper. :o ;)
Malconsiglio- The medieval festival is held in the castle. The archery tournament is actually held adjacent in an enclosed courtyard.
I'm relatively new to this site, and having been swamped all winter, have only just begun truly exploring it. That said, I just discovered your castle thread today, and am simply enjoying all the beautiful photographs. I'm sure as I have more time, and get caught up, that I'll read further information that you post. Probably won't often look at the map links/coordinates, but who knows at this point ...
Thanks for doing this ... I had no idea there were so very many castles still left standing!!! I have GOT to get back to Europe!!! I've only been there once, to Germany, so have only seen a few in person.
Glad you enjoy the postings. It has been a labor of love for me.
I too am really amazed on how you can find all of these castles! Its great though. Today's is probably my favorite thus far. :)
I am going to be totally unsurprised when the good Doña pops up one morning with the castle from the Wicked Witch of the West in Oz.
Lots of reading and a little help from my friends....
You taunt me, wicked woman! :D Thanks! That's a pretty cool image!
Oooh! Dona, what one of the castles you have found resembles that most? Just curious!
Possibly Alquezar- see castle top right on photo.

Not so many towers...but out on the ridge.
I like it!:)
Though the more I think about it, The Alcazar of Segovia might have been the model.
It makes me think of, then makes me hungry because of, the chant "O-REO YO O O-REO YO O." At least, that's what it sounds like to me.
Yes..that one does look more like the Wizard Of Oz castle.
OREO??? I always thought it was O-E-O (laughing, I am never going to look at it the same again!!!!!!! :D)
:)

Ooh, those two before the last one are particularly wonderful. I'm a big fan of great, old stone piles of castles. I especially love that we can see some of the inner rooms of the Castle of Vimianzo.
I try to get interior shots if I can find them. But some of the ruins are in such bad shape that they are not safe to go inside. Hence, lack of interior photos.

Yes, I couldn't help but notice the big holes in the stone floor of today's castle.
Hmmmm....I have always heard people say how they would like to "fix up" a castle. I know this is sort of random, but it got me thinking on how many people actually HAVE? :)
Quite a few castles have been restored, all or in part, as historical projects. Warwick is a case in point. It costs millions these days to stabilize foundations and replace and set dressed stone walls. Then there are the floor supports and floor construction which is more like the deck of a ship than a modern floor.
http://www.warwick-castle.com/explore-castle/history-and-restoration.aspx (http://www.warwick-castle.com/explore-castle/history-and-restoration.aspx)
Okay, I guess I should have said, is there anyone that has restored a castle strictly as a home?
Yes, I would imagine it would take a lot of money!! Interesting project though.
2/8/13 Castle:
LOVE the landscaping!

Agreed. The landscaping is fabulous--very ornate. Glad I don't have to take care of it! :)

would anyone notice if I stopped doing the Castle of the Day?
Yes... But how long do you want to keep it up? You have done an amazing job of collecting this information!
I haven't been as diligent in checking the forum with the move and all, but it seemed that you missed a few days in there... Do you weary of the task? I can certainly understand it if you do. Either way, you have my thanks for the education!
What Merlin said. I enjoy it and view it each day but realize it is a big job to keep it up and would understand if you wanted to "retire" from it. I add my thanks for all you've done whatever your decision.
Here's a thought: what about a Castle of the Week or Month?
Dona,
I would miss Castle of the Day too, but I'm sure posting a new castle everyday is a huge amount of work on your part. A Castle of the week or month might be more manageable.
Should you decide to stop the daily postings, I want to thank you for all your hard work, research and commitment. Sometimes things just have to end.
Gina
I check it out every day to see what you've found for us now! And as we just missed this threads "5 year anniversary" back on 5-7 I don't think anyone could blame you for wanting to retire it or at least you may want to cut back to say "Castle of the Week" maybe?

Sometime in the next week or so, I'll have some photos processed and posted from my recent holiday in Ireland. We didn't focus too much on castles, but did visit the Rock of Cashel and Trim Castle.
Take Care & Get Well Soon!

Sorry that you've been ill, Doña! A lot of folks up here have had the stomach bug, too! Hope you're better. A slug of Jack will help.

Very nice, David! Thanks for sharing.
My daughter likes visiting historic parts of the cities she visits and she has learned to ask me if there are any castles. If the castle survives, then generally there are other older and interesting places nearby. Your photos are great David, thanks for sharing. You might consider scheduling your next European trip around castle tours. LOL.

One stone at a time. People using hand tools were pretty ingenious.
Krumlov Castle (11/6/13) - Wow! But it would take you 10 years to learn your way around the place!
DC, your Castle Of The Day thread is MAGNIFICENT!
As for your 11/25/13 post on Goslar: The Duchess and I toured this castle on several occasions while we were stationed in Germany in the 70's. It was a favorite place for us to take friends and family who came to visit. Talk about stepping back in time!
It is a beautiful entry! The blue statues... I have to wonder how thick that patina is. I look at those and laugh because a few years ago, a new-elected Secretary of State decided that the statues on the state capitol grounds needed to be cleaned because they had turned blue. As I recall, he didn't get re-elected...
The castle where this photo was taken must be right up there with the oldest ones around (built during the dinosaur era)... ;) ;D

Possibly there are fossils in the stones which were used to construct the castle.
