My ~ahem~ tentative plans are to arrive early Friday, set-up the camper and then....??? Is there anything else close by to do while waiting for Saturday morning to arrive?
Herc, the party starts Friday morning....
Don't listen to that tard...
*for those in the know, the party starts Thursday night*
PARTY ;D :D ;)
Ok, ok...lemmee get right to the point. Where's the closest nudie bar?
Seriously. Is there anything else close-by? ???
*ahem* they ain't close ;)
Not that I know first hand or anything ::)
From the sounds of it just wait for the nightly ring of fire.
Was kidding about the nudie bars...I refuse to bring that many $1 bills. :D
With activities like the bonfire and naked slip-n-slide at the campgrounds... seriously... who needs a nudie bar?
Quite honestly, I think faire has jaded me against anything like that
Paying money for seeing nakie people? I have better things to do with my dollars lol
*like the purchase of rum of course*
Well crap....only got maself to blame for mentioning nudie bars. :D
I'll try this.....Is there ANYTHING else around besides nudie bars?
What else matters :D It's pretty much out aways from everything.
Can you say BFE?
Well, there's Henry's Hideout (or whatever it is called now) on 1774 close by. From the decor, I don't suggest you show up in garb.
Haven't been through the Highway 105 area up by Lake Conroe for several years, but sure there are upscale bars.
I think the sidewalks in Magnolia rollup after dark, so probably not much luck there.
So, Thursday evening in the campgrounds is pleasant for greeting friends who can get off work then. Otherwise, the mass land rush of Friday is the best bet.
Yes, the best part is the gathering and meeting of faire friends. If you do want to do anything else there is a bar down the road from faire that seem fairly active. Other than that you will have to go to Conroe or The Woodlands. Which is a little bit of a drive, but not bad.
Okay, Herc, as one who has lived in the area for closing in on 7 years, I'm probably the best qualified to answwer this question.
First, however, I need to know in which direction your interests lay, so as to send you in the right direction.
To be honest I was hoping to get some suggestions. Just sounds boring hanging around the campgrounds all day Friday. :-\
In my yute, when camping, we'd pass the time by plinking turtles with a .22....me thinks that ain't allowed here. :D
We don't just hang around the campgrounds honey. We socialize! You go from camp to camp saying hello and meeting new people, and then drink a LOT of beer. We make any runs to Walmart that need to be made, mostly because someone has forgotten something important. There's usually a run for some sort of fast food, and sometimes there are beer and rum runs. When the sun goes down, everyone settles in for dinner, and the pre-faire parties. About 9ish, drum circle starts.
There's plenty to do, and no time to do it in! Trust me, it's a whole culture that needs to be appreciated and absorbed.
Oh, and last year, we flashed a news helicopter that was circling overhead...
Blue is right, hanging around the campgrounds isn't boring at all. I was able to take off work on a Friday last year so I could go up Thursday night and spend all day Friday at the campgrounds. My husband had to work and my son had school so I went by myself. It was a blast! I had so much fun just hanging around with everyone! I would love to be able to do that again this year too.
There's also something to be said for simply sitting in comfortable camp chair and 'soaking it all in'. I go camping two or three times a year, and I always make sure to take some time to relax and listen to the sounds of camp.
The pings of tents being staked, rennie musicians warming up in the distance, laughter between old friends finding each other at camp...to me, this is what makes camping at TRF an experience.
Of course, after you meditate on that awhile, get off yer butt and go meet people and drink beer. :)
I completely agree with BatNinja- my favourite times at camp are just playing my rennie music, sitting by the fire, and listening to the sounds of HOME. Now, Ive never gotten to go a full day before faire opens, so I am definitely looking forward to this year when we set up on Friday. Also, for me, pre-faire campground time is when I make those last minute garb alterations!!
Can someone 'splain "drum circles" to me?
ummm... BIIIG fire. Lotsa guys and girls with bongo/african style drums. Nearly naked girls dancing.
FUN!!!
... exploding kegs :o
...and propane tanks >.<

Huge bonfire...people sitting around it beating on their drums...girls belly dancing around the bonfire...lots of other people sitting/standing around...that's about it.
Don't forget the fire spinners too! That is always fun to watch. :)
ooh! how could I have forgotten them- i have photo op planses for them this year!!!
i also recall last year there was someone playing the bagpipes until the wee hours of the morn... it was kinda cool to wake up to once i 'got over' being woken up to early, lol!
Then there is the Projectile Vomit Contest... it's not offical but it might as well be. ;D
~ewe~ (http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hercules101/crazy.gif)
really Fraser...that's just gross :-X
Thank You, Milady! :D
That's my boy ;D
Thanks for the un-needed visual... ::)
The large drum circle is alright but I like the smaller, more intimate circles, with a few drummers, a few spinners, and one or two girls dancing and everyone just soaking in the ambiance and being together you know.
I don't drive 4.5 hours to set up camp and then drive another hour to go 'do something.' There is plenty around camp, plenty of people to meet, friends to catch up with, and time to be spent with family. :)
But, is there WiFi? ;)
yes, it's called shouting! information practically FLIES through the air, neatly aimed at your head! lol
(seriously, 6 jolly ranchers and I'm an utter dork- apologies!)
theoretically, with the cell networks offering WiFi now, you should be able to connect as long as you have cell reception... last year, we had a guy on his iPhone looking up a particular website my hubby was featured on...
define irony: a bunch of people driving for hours to camp out, and then dress in medieval/renaissance clothing to attend a renaissance festival to celebrate the past, all while looking up things on laptops and BlackBerries. What are they putting in Jolly Ranchers now?
Now ya'll just remember I'm no where near 100% rennie. So unless there are strippers or LEO there (I do run the full spectrum don't I?) I'll just be the guy in the bushes with binoculars. So maybe da women better find something for me. ;D

One weekend at TRF camping and you WILL be 100%
Actually, hubby says I just became a 'real' rennie as I have decided that we DO need to go to TRF opening weekend even though it will be hotter'n blazes (and I dont do heat well!)
Huzzah!

So my hands will not be idle, and I will not be creating a Devil's workshop....?
of course your hands will not be idle! you'll have loki in one and narrating a story with the other! (wild gesticulating, dontcha know?)
"Wildly gesticulating....."
Sounds naughty..... ;D
paired with loki, it may well be!
;D
I can see it now....
"I'm shorry, ma'am ... *hic!* ... I dint know how my handsh landed on your mammaraliesh.... mamamiesh.... mammararies... your boobsh, yeah. Not muh *hic* fault, wash the Loki, it made me do it, sherioushly..."

Buncha lushes ;D
Can non-campers get into camp to come visit? I think I've seen something on the topic but my search skills have had a few cocktails this evening and are not at their sharpest.
if'n you mind a wee bit of a walk, Milady...

Come in the camping (closer to Plantersville) gate when you come to faire. Then you can park on the campground side of the parking lot and instead of waiting in traffic at the end of the day, you can come get a bite and a drink.

"Would some one call security out here and get Gary Busey outa here before the Tourrette's Syndrome
really gets going??!!"
Thanks Zaubon! Now I'll try to remember that for several weeks! :)
....how is it most of my posts turn into drinking threads? (http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hercules101/confused24.gif)
All I was after was the closest nudie bar. ;D
well, you ARE talking to rennies, and for most of us, there are few things we like better than faire, unless it's BOOZE and faire! ;)
Herc it all went down hill after the spiked heels :o
.......still ain't gonna wear crocs.
awww, not even crocs with spiked heels???
Speaking of spiked heels, anyone know if there's an UnQueenly this year?
ANOTHER rennie term!? Is there a reference book or a dictionary out there?
WTF is a "UnQueenly"? ~sigh~
LMAO! Join the club, what is it? ???
well, I dont know if they even still do it, but it's a beauty show, of sorts, put on by one of the Clans... pretty much a drag show- and it's awesome!
Oh hell no (http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Hercules101/cheeky4.gif)......I can see where this is going. I hung up my stuffed bra years ago.
There you go Herc, guarentee you'll win ;D
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2Gh_jKNFuSw/RfF7SfrqasI/AAAAAAAABgA/tQEMtFLwJSM/s400/frank_n_furter)
We have a winner! :o
Hot patootie, bless my soul!!!
Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that there does happen to occasionally be an impromptu DriveIn out at camp- some guy brings his playstation and an LCD, styrings up a big sheet and plays movies- i remember one year they did Bubba HoTep (mmmm.... Bruce Campbell!)
Ok... the whole Tim Curry thing... awwww, forget it.
The ones that I have seen, the guys are dressed in ren costumes...quite a laugh.
Now thats worth seeing.
I ain't got the hooters to fill out one of them dresses.
I'm sure something something can be found to help remedy that problem. If not the fact of just trying is funny enough and worth the watch.
*grabs eye-spoon and brain-bleach*
Yes, there is an UnQueenly contest scheduled this year. Can't remember the weekend. Yes, it is a Drag contest but it's a Clan Chaos in Drag contest. Attend at yer own risk.
It is Halloween weekend, Saturday night in fact
It is a Chaos event, but all are welcome
*just bring lots of rum... you'll need it*
Oh, Chaos. XD But that's why we love them~ hehehe
Halloween weekend is going to be a blast!
Loki + Faire + UnQueenly Contest = best Halloween EVA. :)
What about camp ground stuff? I camp every year and have stumbled upon a few things going on, the fire shows, topless fire breathing on the fire tire, contact fire juggling...and a few other things im sure were just spontaneous...anyone got any plans I can be privvy to? Oh..and Naked SLip N Slide?

Be sure to bring protective eyegear... you might want to carry that rum internally.. in advance.
