Hi Everyone
I have seen the topics of What machine do you use ?or What movies do you sew by?, but I havent seen one about Sewing rooms.
I have a very small space in my apartment at the moment and in the not so distant future will have the space for an actual Sewing Room and was curious what you ladies had. Really looking to get some ideas as basic storage, tables, desks, etc.
I have searched many pics on the internet but still havent found one that makes me go Ah ha! thats what I am looking for!
This is my space for now

Hope this gives you a few ideas... my cutting table idea came from Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. It is a folding table with 4 pvc pipes cut equally to raise it to my standing height without having to bend over. The black mezzanine rack that holds thread, pins and other items came from IKEA as did the white rolling bins under the table. I sewed my drapes, it was clearance fabric at Wal-Mart years ago, it's of 2 lovers in Renaissance Era garb. The sewing machine was grandmother's as well as the China Head Doll, dress courtesy of the Jr. Leage Warehouse of Charlotte.
There is a pix of me with short hair at Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire when it was held in Devore, CA 7 years ago which is where and when I purchased myne saffron skirt and gold "top". I love this room!
My sewing area is fairly compressed in our "computer room" (as dubbed by my husband), but the floor space allows me to stretch out and let the creative juices flow.
The table folds out just short of the full size of the cutting mat and drops down to 13 inches deep when I don't need it.
I use the cork board to post patterns, ideas, motivation, etc, and I can pin up bagged hat feathers so that they maintain shape.
Next to the table, I have a rolling plastic storage set of drawers for beading, knitting, embroidering, and other craft supplies.
I have an older machine inside the table and my primary machine on top.
There is a standing set of plastic drawers against the wall for patterns, thread, sewing tools, buttons, etc.
The closet (obviously) holds my garb in garment bags, and my fabric stash is organized in plastic totes.
The dress figure moves around the room as necessary, and the ironing board is next to a full length mirror just outside of the picture.
I'm currently waiting for shelves to be installed above the machine(s) for my books and manuals, which are currently in a section of our general book area in another room. This was a big step up from the dining room table at our old apartment.
Sewing... room?
BWAHAHAHA!!!!
I've got all my sewing stuff crammed in one corner of my bedroom. My "sewing table" (aka my dad's drafting table from university) currently is also home to various faire props, some hats, and a laser printer that is not connected to a computer, as well as a couple of WIPs, specifically a bodice mock up and a farthingale that I'm surprisingly almost finished. Just need to sew one more channel and put on the waistband. My cutting mat is on my floor. Officially, fabric lives in a trunk, but it's spilled out everywhere and is taking over.
I'm still waiting for the day that I magically wake up and am organized. Hasn't happened yet.
I read with a grin "GirlChris" "I'm still waiting for the day that I magically wake up and am organized" You appear fairly young, and there may yet be hope for you, but I have finally realized, as I approach my 70th, that if I haven't become organized by now, it just isn't going to happen. That's OK, I've rather gotten used to total disarray in my sewing room (and my library, and my closet, etc.) Back to the subject, though, of what's in my sewing room. I did some remodelling in my house a few years back, and took one small bedroom (11x11), removed the closet, to make it a bit larger, and then put rolling wire shelf units from either Lowe's or Home Depot on the east. The south wall holds a desk, my sewing machine, and wall-mounted spool storage units & storage units for odds and ends. The north wall has one shelf unit, and my filing cabinet. The west wall has a small chest just inside the door, that has all my needlework-oriented books on it, with wall-hung storage drawers above, and then two more of the wire shelf units. All fabrics, leathers, furs, feathers, notions, etc. are in translucent plastic bins, on the shelves. My ironing board and cutting table both fold up and fit between shelf units. I'd send a picture, but clutter has taken over, and it is a real mess in the middle--BUT--if I need something, I can go right to it. Operative word there is "I"--noone else could find anything. The shelf units, by the way, come without wheels, but they have little packages of wheels for them. While it isn't strictly necessary to have them on wheels, it certainly is nice when you want to really clean in there, and can roll all the shelves out of the way to clean.
Here is my sewing room. the living room. I have to move a mirrored coffee table and set up a folding table. Then pull the sewing machine out of the closet along with the other paraphernalia. And Voila

My sewing area is an "organized mess." At least I know where things are.
I sew with a Janome Memory Craft 4900, have two sergers. One is a 21 year old New Home(now Janome) and a Janome serger that does a wonderful tiny serged rolled hem.
Here's mine!

Dragonwing, what a clever "catch-all" hangs in front of your machine! You may have solved the problem of, where did the pins go, when working with 8 miles of skirt on the table! I've never seen one of those before!
**now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord.... that fairies will come clean my sewing room!**
So many ideas and inspiritions! Thank you all that posted.
I confess Artemisia I peeked at your blogspot a while back and actually your new room design inspired me for mine :)

Thank you Amy. I got it from the "Home-Sew Inc." catalog or go to www.homesew.com . It's called a Sew Organized Sewing Pad. It comes in quite handy. I have my scissors, marking pencils, seam ripper, and other odds and ends. If I can't find my pincushion right away I just poke them into that as well. I really like it. Packs away with the sewing machine nicely

LOL, I particularly like the adult beverage next to the sewing machine!
I just about have my new sewing room set up! I'll post pics later tonight. I see lots of ideas that I may want to borrow!
Okay, here are some pics of my new sewing room now that the carpet has been replaced and the walls painted! I'm still looking for curtains. Target has some faux dupioni curtains in a pink similar to the pink fabric bins. This room is really small, but I LOVE having a space for my projects! When I have my ironing board set up, I barely have room to turn. I'll have to wait and see if this will work out for larger projects....

I love my cube shelves! The fabric drawers hold my pattern collection, drafted patterns, and various sewing tools. For a small space, this is really the way to go.

Small closet, but I was able to get a shelf inside to expand my storage options. I have a huge double closet in my bedroom for finished garb, so not being able to use this one isn't a problem.
I am soooo envious of all of your spaces. Wow!

I agree, they're very cool! And probably practical as well, as you can store a little in each, instead of a lot of different stuff in one big drawer.
As for MY sewing room.... Ha-ha-ha! I live in one room in total, so the sewing stuff is placed wherever there's room. I have SUCH a system on it, though, very tidy and organized. I HAVE to, seeing how crammed the space is... Fabrics and dresses are put in various boxes from Ikea. Some of these boxes fit into their Expedit shelf (which also function as a working table), while the bigger ones are placed on top of eachother. Ribbons and other "stash" is placed in even smaller boxes on top of my kitchen shelves.
I also have a mannequin in my apartment, and on it is always the project I'm working on. Guests always assume I place something fancy on it to show off, but it is mostly of practical reasons I have it there!

Yay! One more enabling point for me! It's tough trying to fit all that stuff in a small space. My new sewing room only has only 8.5' x 10' usable space. Did you see this "itsy-bitsy sewing room (http://picasaweb.google.com/angiesquilting/ItsyBitsySewingRoom?feat=directlink#)"?

Glad to know I'm on the right track. I've planned for one or two of these in my new plan. I've only heard good things about these shelves.

Thanks for the link to the itsy-bitsy sewing room. Lots of ideas there! (LOL, my sewing room is 8" x 8.5", and I have a small fabric addiction that was only kept under control this summer by the fact that I was moving.)

I was just about to ask you about your space size. Yes, fabric addiction (http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=97.0) comes part-and-parcel with our lot.
I just changed my design plan. It goes back to my original idea to use the capabilities of the fold-up cutting table and have even more table space. I still have to think about fabric storage, a place for a computer and ironing board. Not done with this design yet.
If you need sturdy, well-built tables I recommend Lifetime utility tables. They have a free shipping offer now. http://www.buylifetime.com/Products/BLT/Tables/Default.aspx Also the ones sold by Wally-mart (http://www.walmart.com/browse/Furniture/Kitchen-Dining-Furniture/Tables/_/N-5tafZaq90Zaqce/Ne-2p4i?ic=48_0&ref=125874.271239&tab_value=17219_All&catNavId=4037&fromPageCatId=438680&catNavId=4037) aren't bad either.
More pics of garb-sewing rooms please. I need more ideas!
Himself is on record as saying that I no longer have a sewing room - we live in a sewing house!
When we had the conservatory/garden room rebuilt, not only was space made for the boys to do their model making, space was also made for my kitchen cupboard overspill, the fridge-freezer, feeezer, washer and dryer were plumbed in, we had a large sink fitted, and a breakfast bar added. I use this for cutting out, and can erect extra space when needed for larger items. There is also space for a sewing machine table to be set up if one is needed down there. This is usually only required when we are fettling old machines... Or I'm making something too large to be accommodated in the sewing room itself. I also have space there for the iron and ironing board. There are 13 double sockets above the benches and on the walls, and a few more hidden ones for the appliances!
This shows the long table set up for cutting out:

And one the other way... (http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/9933491/sn/1017577604/name/n_a)
The sewing room itself houses a large number of books, the spare bed, most of the sewing machines, and a heap of sewing supplies. It's a tad crowded, but I try to keep it tidy!
Books:

More storage: I have several stacks of baskets organized like this:
(http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/9933491/sn/695789146/name/n_a) (http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/9933491/sn/800932292/name/n_a) (http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/9933491/sn/979383219/name/n_a)
The great thing is that with two on casters, I can move them about and use them as extra cutting space, sewing support areas, for the mini ironing board, or as an extra sewing machine bench.
I should take a few more recent pix of the place in tidy and usable mode...
Kate,
I lived in Thetford England for 4 yrs and I cannot imagine how you have so much room in your house!! We were lucky to even get our king size bed up the stairs and into the bedroom hehehe
Great job!
The answer is 'with difficulty'!
The conservatory is the largest room in the house, being about 23 feet long and 9.8 wide... The living room is about 19' by 12.5', the kitchen 17 long by almost six wide, and the dining room is 10.5 by 11.5 (ish).
The sewing room is the same size and shape as the dining room, being right above it. There is very little wasted space, and the loft is the same area as the ground floor. though tent-shaped, so is fantastic storage space. While I am a serious squirrel and hoard all sorts of things I shouldn't, I am fairly well organized and a childhood of moving house means I'm good at packing a lot into a small space.
I do admit to being a little short of storage space.
These are some of the boxes of stash:
Pattern stash... There are now 12 red boxes, a grey one, and several shoe boxes.
Fabric boxes:
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3035/2879676043_59a6b052ba.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3178/2880509402_50c4003a4e.jpg)
There are 57 large boxes and about 20 smaller ones, plus a basket of rolls... They live in the loft.
I'm so glad you asked because we FINALLY finished my sewing room overhaul! I wanted it to be functional AND inspirational hence the "castle" theming. These pictures were taken after a cleaning and it should be noted that when I'm mid-project...it gets completely trashed. This small room is such a luxury because before we bought this house I just did my sewing in the dining room.

^That is so beautiful! Whenever I finally get a sewing room, I think I may be using yours for inspiration. It's like something you would see on a design show!
I have sewing room envy--your space is gorgeous!
These are all so nifty. I can't even sew on a button without messing it up but now I want a sewing room because it looks fun!
You mean you are suppose to have a whole room for sewing?? ??? I have a 4 bed room home with just the two of us. I could use the computer room, or one of the two rooms down stairs (we have a split level). But then I couldn't use the satalite or DVD player unless I disconnect my little tv upstairs and bring it down. Maybe when flat screens fall drasticly in price I can afford to get one and move my large tv into the basement for a sewing room. For now, the kitchen and living room works fine. If I ever get around to organize a whole room for sewing I'll post some pics. Everyone else makes me so jealous!
NicoleBridget, that is gorgeous! I would definitely be inspired in those surroundings. I especially love the colour of the wall and the Tudor/Elizabeth portraits!
NicoleBridget, is that a wallpaper on your walls??? I absolutely LOVE your sewing room!!
I also adore how everyone has used their space so well!! I have to sew on a utility table in the middle of my kitchen...and my dad HATES it!! He sleeps during the day, as he works third shift...I work 2nd shift...so I either sew at night, or during the day. The kitchen is beside his bedroom...so he can hear the machine if he's not sleeping heavy.
All my goodies (cloth, machine, thread, etc) is stored at the top or bottom of my closet when not in use. The table is folded down, and propped up in the enclosed backporch.
Oh NicoleBridget....
I believe I have found my Ah ha! moment. Beautiful room to be inspired and to daydream!
NicoleBridget, I am in love with your sewing room. The Castle theme is wonderful. Good job.
*goes off an sulks. I don't have a room like that.*
*Squee* Thank you SO much for the compliments everyone, I knew you guys could appreciate it more than anyone else! The walls are covered with a stone-look wallpaper, and it's my favorite component of the room, I almost didn't want to hang the portraits and tapestery because I didn't want to cover it up! Lady Rebecca, I'm into interior design too (another creative outlet I guess, as if I need another hobby) so what you said about a design show is quite a compliment, thank you. The catch to the room is...it's holding everything it needs to hold FOR NOW. If my stash gets bigger, when the wardrobe gets bigger, if have to add one more large-ish thing I don't know where I'll put them without infringing on the "pretty". It's packed full. These pictures were taken with a project looming, I should take some more once I'm in it up to my elbows!
I WISH I had a sewing room. Right now I have a space in my dining room, which could technically be counted as a sewing room I guess since we don't eat in the dining room. Perhaps if I was to organize it better, then I would have a good space.
I think I just wet myself! WOW!!!!! What a dreamy room. I thought the room with all of the windows was great...
Oh...windows... What I wouldn't give to have a nice window seat somewhere in the house. *walks away muttering about which wall to bust out*
Oh I wish I had a picture! It's very similar to a childs room where there is just enough room to open the door and little path ways to get around the rest is packed waist high with fabric, trim, patterns... :D
Are we the only ones with this addiction?
I love your sewing room NicoleBridget!
I think my room looks like Becky10's. :) It was my son's room and I just have a path to walk into it. It does have one window that looks over my pond in the backyard. I need a much bigger room er, house.
Ohhhhhhh to have a sewing room. *sigh* I'm envious of you all! I have a popup card table that I sometimes can use in the office. :(
I can't get to my sewing table anymore because it's buried behind at least 20 or so large bead storage boxes I got at the hardware store that are supposed to be used for nut & bolts & stuff like that.

Nicole, you're making me think about trashing my original orange-colored wall idea. Your room is fabuloso!
OMG I love this thread ... So voyeuristic :P
Re: Whats in your Sewing Room?
a broken sewing machine!
:'(
Getting a new one tomorrow- it was a low end Brother, so I might as well just get a new one than pay to have it repaired...
Here's my messy office. I work from home a lot so I have my personal computer and my work laptop in there too.
i have a Viking 950e (embroidery also, but i can't figure out how to use it) sewing machine and a Babylock Imagine serger.
My dress form is foam and it has this little zipper suit you can sew into your size and stuff the foam into to make it smaller. Not that I have to. I used to use it, but a hundred ice cream cones later, it mysteriously had to come off.
Not pictured: my Janome Decor Pro 5124 that I tried to sell but decided it was better to keep a backup at the advice of my mother-in-law.

So now you need to share...where did you get the wallpaper? I have plans to turn the spare bedroom into a castle room, and currently I have the directions to paint a stone wall from RenStore. I'm curious if I'd like one over the other...
On topic, my sewing room is one half of my geek room (or as has been dubbed by Houston rennies that have been to my house, the "Aiacha Room") with mostly Star Trek and Star Wars filling the other side. My cutting table would be my tile floor in my living room :-/. It's really just a small desk with a sewing machine and boxes of patterns, a closet of materials, and supplies. And currently it's a mess!
Aiacha, here is the website I got the wallpaper from:

But I have to dig up my sample from home to find the exact style (the style # is on the back) and will get back to you with a more specific link. All I know is...I wasn't even looking for that style, didn't know such a thing existed, I was searching for something completely different and just happened upon it. IMO even the 'advanced search' on that site is useless because I can't find the paper using it...
So poke around the website yourself if you want to while I'm looking for the style #. Sorry I can't be more specific at the moment!

Is this it? I just did a search for bricks, then neutral color, then wallpaper.

Or is this one it??
YES! Tammy, that's it! The first one. Thank you for finding that as I couldn't find my sample anywhere this weekend and I wasn't looking forward to wading through those search results to find the number (but I would have because I promised :) )
Finally! I am proud to show my sewing "room" well more so of an area that has taken over the dining room, but it is cleaned and organized, and I am happy!

It looks awesome, Lady Season!
*grumble grumble...have to get mine done* :P
Thank you everyone that has replied. There are so many great ideas and inspirations here that have been shared. No matter how big or small our spaces are where we create and sometimes escape ;)

Hehe, my dining room is a computer room now...you're more productive than I am! :)
I currently do not have a sewing room (I usually sew at my parents place where they have the space for me to use) but this thread has motivated me to turn our spare room into a sewing/computer/garb room!
