Title: Privy Council Robe. References?
Post by: Don Giovanni de' Medici on September 07, 2009, 06:14:26 PM
Ciao Tutti,

I placed this in the garb thread and did not receive very much feedback, perhaps this thread will be a better place for it, just thought I would try it out...

Hey Everyone.

I tried to make a scholar's cloak for this past years show and it didn't quite turn out as i would have hoped.  After looking at the make of the cloak, I realized it wouldn't be very hard to make some alterations in that it might better serve as a council robe.  My character is an Italian connected with the Holy Mother Church in Rome so if anyone has any ideas for some references or links to them that would be greatly appreciated as I am not having very much luck.  Here is a photo of what the cloak looks like now:

I have watched and own all of the Elizabeth films, and many others in that time period.  Again any advice on alterations and links to references would be wonderful.  Gracie Tutti!

I wish I could help, but this is out of my field. Hmmm... You write that your character is Italian and connected with the catholic church. But is your character living in Italy, an advisor for the pope? If so, I think the concistoro (consistory) is what you're looking for. But the concistoro was made up of cardinals, and I think thy would wear their cardinal outfits for the task.

If your character is living abroad, on the other hand, he might wear a different type of outfit.

The cancelleria (chancery) is another option, but they were working on the Vatican's money issues and I have no idea if they wore specific uniforms. Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and his Palazzo della Cancelleria might be a key person (and only reason why I know this, is that I had a presentation of a Vasari frescoed room there last year, glorifying the Farnese family, he-he...)

But as said, this is out of my field... Any additional info or picture reference might be of help. And I hope someone else will come to your rescue!

Gracie Operafantomet!

I will do some research on the information you gave me.  As for the character he is Italian but living abroad as an Ambassador.  His Uncle is Pope Clement VII so he does serve the catholic church, though as a Medici his interests lie in money among other things, LOL.  I was thinking just a general robe like those seen in Elizabeth by the Privy Council.  I had made a Scholar's Cloak and it did not serve as well as I would have liked for the look I was going for, so I thought perhaps the robe might be a better looking garb item that would still serve the purpose of and extra layer for colder weather/rainy days.
