Title: What should i dye my purple fabric..
Post by: gypsylakat on September 08, 2009, 10:26:39 PM
So I bought a few yards of this bright violet purple cotton when I had a coupon because I really  liked the color... But now after I've got it home, and I've stared at it for a while, I've decided it's just TOO bright, and it's not going to look right at all. It is a very bright vibrant violet type color... and I want to dye it.. what do you think I could dye it and make it look right? Could I tea dye it? what color would that make d'ya think?

Have you tried just washing it to see if it might bleed the color a bit?   I'd either go a shade darker or try to lighten it.

Or you could cut a 6" sample swatch of the fabric, wash it or dye it to see how it comes out. Perhaps using a Navy Blue dye might tone down the bright purple.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Basically, if you add anything with yellow, you will go towards a muddy to brown color.  If you add red, it will go towards a deeper color to crimson.  If you add blue it will go to a richer color to a grape.

This all depends on it being 100 percent natural cotton, with no fabric treatments, pre-washed, a mordant added, and of course my preconceived idea of what Violet purple looks like.  :D

You could also keep it that color and find a contrasting color to add as trim, guards, or over top to tone it down.
