Title: Gypsy Back Pack?
Post by: Ditzy Gypsy on September 25, 2009, 02:44:00 PM
Hey there,
I'm having some gypsy garbing issues with carrying stuff around at the faire. I have 2 small pouches that I attach to my belt. But by small I mean slightly larger than the average camera case. They are small because if I dance with anything larger they flop around (and that's always attractive :P ) or could fall off. With a big 25 yard gypsy spinning skirt + coin belt, scarfs and attached jewelry bits my waist is already pretty well weighed down by stuff. Only Issue is, if I buy something or want to carry favors to give people or whatever--I have to carry an additional purse around my shoulder, which I either have to put down to dance or play a game, make my boyfriend begrudgingly carry, or worry about it swinging around and hitting someone during a barrel turn! (wouldn't want that, despite my ditzy character. rofl)

Anyway, I was trying to devise a way to carry an additional bag, but not have it on my waist or shoulder. I was thinking about maybe making a small backpack purse, but I was wondering if there would be a more accurate or simply a better way to carry things while not limiting movement. Any links or pattern recommendations would be helpful too!

Thanks in advance for any helpful ideas,
-A Gypsy that Feels Like a Bag Lady

I had a leather "courier" bag made for me, to carry the Guard Sign-in book in.  It's a bout 12x14x2", with a long strap.  I wear it across one shoulder and it sits on one hip.  We usually have a "crap table" at dance where the cast can pile swords and mugs, and my bag goes there too.  It's easier to hand to someone.

This last year I had the book, pen, serviette (napkins) a bowl, two spoons, a small first aid kit...all in the bag.

Another option you can try is a pack basket.  I've seen many people, dancers included, use them at Pennsic.  Here is a link to Smoke & Fire but a search online might find you a cheaper option. http://www.smoke-fire.com/wood-items-furniture-1.asp (http://www.smoke-fire.com/wood-items-furniture-1.asp)

I only have a tiny bag that I keep on me, tied to my person. It's big enough for my cash and my truck key, so it's not too troublesome.

The rest is in a striped bag that doesn't look tooooooo noticeable. And it is a pain, but barring having a little donkey (and donkey-keeper) with you, watcha going to do?

I'm interested in what folks do, too.

What about making one like those drawstring backpacks, the ones that are usually showing a sports shoe logo or something.  It seems like it COULD be a periodish inovation.

Eh?

That one would be great! But they are out of stock...  :P But at least now I can look for something similar to it! I could definitely stitch on a piece of Afghan jewelry and it would look imported.

Thanks to everyone who is helping out. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated, I have about a month to get one. :)
