Title: Leather binding?
Post by: gem on September 29, 2009, 02:54:56 PM
As I mentioned in another thread, I'm working on a Gimli costume for Milord.  The tunic appears to be bound in some kind of leather binding:

And a *huge* b&w closeup (http://fractured-sanity.org/colorisations/gimli.jpg).

I could use microsuede, like I'm doing for my corset, but I thought I'd read somewhere that there actually was suede or leather binding available.  Or something.

Anyone have leads or suggestions?

Gramercy!

by binding do you mean laces? or something like bias binding??
You can totally get laces in different kinds of leather including suede and latigo, they also make synthetic suede lace. Leather lace looks like shoe laces but its flat edged not round.

if its more like bias binding that you are looking for I've never seen it commercially available- that would be awesome if it is. But it'd be easy enough, though I don't know how you figure out the grain on a hide hmmm ???

that picture is AWESOME btw, your going to have one very happy man

I buy my leather binding at the Colonial Market days.   We have a few here and I think the next one is only in a couple of weeks.  So, yes, there is such a thing and it's used in a lot of extant garments but it's very hard to find now-a-days.

Could I use something like this (http://www.mjtrim.com/Catalog/Product/330/31660/31660.aspx), do you think?

15 mm Ultrasuede tape?  (Also avail. in 10 mm)  That seems *awfully* thin.

Yup, or buy some yardage and cut it to the width you need.  You can do the same with soft leather, too.

Oh, awesomesauce.   I'll need to buy a bunch of that.  But yes, just fold it over and sew it up just like bias tape!
