Title: Make-Up at Faire
Post by: Dracconia on October 04, 2009, 09:36:15 PM
I wasn't sure where to post this, if it needs moving Sorry!

But I see women at faire who's make up is as perfect at the end of the day as it started....

Now do they just reapply all day, or is there a magic make up brand/technique that I have not discovered yet ....

Any tips on faire proof make up would be gladly welcome!

I'm loving the Mary-Kay eye primer. I don't know about the rest of the make-up spectrum, but finally the eye-shadow lasts and primarily stays on my eye lids verses drifting into the creases below my eyes.

I always have the racoon look too I just do the undereye finger sweep to kill the racoon look.

But other than that any one got some advise to avoid melting makeup?

I wear Everyday Minerals (http://www.everydayminerals.com) for everything except my mascara & lipstick/gloss.  I generally don't reapply anything except my lipstick/gloss during the day, and while I'm not looking perfect at the end of the day, I've usually got mostly the same coverage at the end of the day that I had early in the day.  I make my own eyeliner with the eyeshadows (it's all powdered mineral make up).  I have some tiny little paint pots that I bought for less than a buck for 8 of them at Hobby Lobby (the kind of pots that the paint-by-number sets have the paint in).  I put some clear mascara into the pot, put in some of the eyeshadow powder, and stir it to mix it well. I apply with a small angled eyeliner brush, and unless I'm crying or my eyes water a lot for some reason, it looks virtually the same when I get home as it did when I left for faire.  Sometimes it's a bit finer of a line, at least on the bottom, but the top is rarely comes off unless it's just one of those miserably hot, dripping sweat sorts of days, in which case it's not just the eyeliner that's come of....  I have NEVER gotten raccoon eyes with my EM eyeliner combined with the washable waterproof mascara I use (CoverGirl).

If I'm NOT going to faire, I'll either use the powdered eyeshadow for liner without wetting it, or I'll pour a bit into a paint mixing dish and wet it with a little water.  In general, the matte or pearly shades do better with just the water or dry than the really shimmery ones, for some reason, but they are equally good in the clear mascara mix.

I do pretty much the same as raevyncat except that I use Bare Esscentuals mineral makeup and use the Weather Everything drops to create waterproof (and sweatproof) liquid liner.
That said, I wear minmal makeup at faire unless I am wearing fantasy pirate garb. To my eye obvious modern makeup just doesn't look right when wearing an attempt at historically accurate renaissance garb.

Aye, Bare Essentuals and Sephora's "Make Up Forever" eyeliner.

I use a lot of bolder colors, so I use Ben Nye theater makeup. It takes quite a lot to get that stuff off! As for eyeliner, I'm using Revlon ColorStay. That stuff doesn't come off easily either!

It can get up to over 100 degrees at Scarby, and since I'm usually wearing about 40 pounds of costuming, it can be a little warm (Court Ladies don't sweat, we GLISTEN! *snerk*).  Thus developing a makeup routine is a necessity!

1.  Wash face and moisturize.  Let set for at least 10-15 minutes.
2.  Sunscreen.  Let set for at least 10-15 minutes.
3.  Add a very thin layer of Milk of Magnesia, applied via cottonball.  Let dry until clear.
4.  Liquid foundation.  I can't use the mineral ones, they don't cover the huge amounts of red in my complection, and powder only gathers in the lines and makes them look worse for me.  Let dry.
5.  Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion.  AWESOME stuff!  Keeps your eyeshadow in place forEVER!  You can put a little under your eyes to hold your eyeliner too.  Let dry.
6.  I prefer creme eyeliner applied with an angled brush.  I think that it holds better and doesn't run when it gets wet.
7.  Basic blush, eyeshadow and waterproof mascara.
8.  I like the lip stains better than lipstick, since I don't have to re-apply.  Some need the clear coats, some don't.  A lot tend to dry out your lips, but if you stay hydrated and moisturize your lips during the week, it isn't that bad.

Generally I don't have to re-apply much during the day at all.  Once in a while I do need to touch up after Chess Match, but that's rather extreme physical exertion.

Hope this helps a little :)

I just thought of something else, I am going to TRF for the first time, and there are no showers there....

(I have been a spoiled rennie with my flushies and showers at Four Winds)

Any tips on staying as fresh as possible?

Any time that I won't have access to showers, I take baby wipes, which I can use to either wipe down completely, or just hit the major spots.  They are also awesome for taking off makeup when soap/water facilities aren't available. My preference is Huggies unscented, but the Parents Choice brand unscented will also do in a pinch.

Bare Escentuals is the best foundation I've ever used. It stays put and unlike liquid foundation doesn't melt off my face or feel like a kabuki mask. I highly recommend it, but you should sample before you buy because some people have a reaction to the minerals. It's pricier than drugstore cosmetics but one pot lasts a long time so it's worth it.

For lipstick, mascara, and eyeliner I go with inexpensive brands. I use Cover Girl Outlast lip color and Lash Blast waterproof mascara, plus waterproof eyeliner from Avon.

Milk of Magnesia??????

Yup!  A friend of mine got that tip from an interview with Tyra Banks.  She was talking about how they keep the make-up so perfect under the hot lights in a studio during long photo shoots.  A thin coating of milk of magnesia under your base coat will help keep the make-up in place and you won't sweat it off.

It really works!!! :)

Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals was the first mineral makeup I tried, and I found that when I get the least bit warm, something in it makes my face itch like mad. I don't break out or anything, but the itching drives me crazy and causes me to be scratching or rubbing my face, wiping it all off  :-\

The great thing about Everyday Minerals is that you can get a sample kit for about $5 S&H to try it before you have to invest in it.  It's MUCH less expensive (even with shipping) than BE/BM, about $12 per pot of foundation, and it lasts me several months.

In my experience the crayon/pencil eyeliners are the worst offenders when it comes to smearing.

My trick for getting makeup to stay is to powder really well (if you've used any liquid makeup, make SURE it's dry before powdering).  If I know I've got a CRAZY day at faire (like performing lots of shows) I'll use theatrical foundation and then put my normal makeup over it.  But always end with a good coat of powder.  I've never had a problem with it running/smearing doing this.

How to keep liquid eye liner out of eyes...hmmm...

Be careful when applying?  I know that sounds really stupid, but I think it just takes some practice.  Make sure you don't have tons of the stuff on the brush, too.  And if you can catch it while it's still wet, wipe it out of your eye, then use your fingernail to scrape off the extra that will have gotten smeared around your eye while removing it FROM your eye.  If you're quick, that trick works.  Otherwise, it's probably best to remove the eye make up and try again.

Well I don't glisten, I SWEAT!!!!

In the morning I look great, by the end of the day I look like I've been run over by the King's men!

I haven't found any make up that can stay put on my face....I literally rain sweat if I'm hot (those hot flashes really suck) my hair is usually just soaked if it's really bad. I do try during the day to clean up a bit (especially now that a mirror is put in our back tent for all to use) but I sure am glad I don't live in a state that has humidity higher than the heat!

But I can tell you, that actors who work at Universal Studios for the guests, do use baby wipes to take off make up (I use to work on the Star Trek show that was put on in Hollywood), any kind will do so long as it's alcohol free.

Lots of people bring camp showers.  You may be able to beg the use of one, especially if you byo water.  You may also be able to take a sponge bath in your tent.  Have a small bucket for soapy water and a small bucket for clean water, stand on a towel, and go easy on the soap.  Use a wet washcloth to rinse rather than pouring water over yourself.  Not quite as good as a shower but better than baby wipes, and it ireally only uses a gallon or two of water.

With the folks that are in Phoenix Risen, someone will have a camp shower... just bring a few gallons of water with you to contribute to the mix.

Does it take you away from the period to see ladies with lots of make up on?

Here's my faire routine...and yes, the hairspray trick is awesome!
Base coat of Boots No.7 True Identity foundation, followed by an application of Bare Minerals Multi-Tasking Minerals, both all over face/jawline and blending into neck.  Be sure to get on your lids and below your brows as well to act as a base layer for eye makeup.  Close eyes and lightly mist entire face with hairspray (Paul Mitchell Freeze N Shine Super Spray) and let dry.  Base coat of neutral colored Clinique eyeshadow all over below brows and on lids.  Then apply eyeliner...I use black Maybelline eyeshadow applied with a very small brush.  Sometimes I'll do liquid liner, but only when I'm specifically going for a harsh look.  Close eyes and mist eye area with hairspray (and don't open until it's dry, lol).  Apply colored eyeshadow as desired.  Curl lashes and apply Avon SuperShock mascara (Best. Mascara. Ever.).  Apply Bobbi Brown blush as needed.  Close eyes and mist entire face with hairspray again and let dry.  Apply lipstick base coat; blot.  Apply lipstick topcoat; blot.

It's a bit labor-intensive, but worked really, really well this past summer in August heat!

The best tip I've seen so far is making sure your skin is at it's absolute best - skin that's well taken care of holds itself together much better under strain. That said, I find Mary Kay products (already mentioned above) to be great at anti-smear and anti-fade. Eye primer is a must if you want to keep your liner, shadow and mascara in place, it really helps cut down the panda eyes. I actually wear MK products to the gym and can still show my face to the outside world afterward.

Adriana Rose points out that period makeup can be a bit heavy on the bright colours, and it's also true that any number of women with disposable income wore kohl eyeliner.

Protip: you should be wearing some sort of foundation all the time, especially at a fest, which has a lot of free floating grubbies in the air (woodsmoke etc). Foundation acts as a shield, keeping all the bad stuff from being in direct contact with your skin. I use a mineral powder foundation that's light as a feather and evens my skin tone out without feeling like there's anything on (another MK product - full disclosure: I do sales for them!) and also washes off really easily. When you wash off your foundation, all the rubbish goes with it, leaving nice, fresh, happy skin behind!

And it's already been mentioned but can't be said enough - SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN!

Okay, I have to totally weigh in here, having just solved this issue myself. I also LOVE the Mary Kay eye primer.  I also use the Mary Kay oil Mattifier, which does a great job of keeping oil down. I use liquid eyeliner instead of pencil (this really keeps liner where it should be).  It is important to find good makeup remover cloths as the eye makeup smudges badly when you remove it.  I am still working out that issue (since I camp and don't have running water).

Ulta
Ulta.com
Sephora
Sephora.com

These are the best resources I've found for the really good make-up.  Ulta also carries the more common brands like Cover Girl and Maybelline.  Sephora tends to stick to the higher-end products.  At least the stores near me do, anyway.

I love Urban Decay's eye primer.  It works like a charm and is in the cutest little purple Jeannie bottle.  It can be found at Ulta.

Urban Decay Primer Potion, yup...  this works best on oily lids or Too Faced Shadow Insurance (better for dry lids, but I have oily lids and this is what I use and it works beautifully...no more creases for me.  These are primers/bases for  your eyeshadow.  It gives your shadows something to stick to and creates a barrier between the shadow and the oil from your lids.  Then a powder shadow is best, because it absorbs moisture.  Both can be bought at either Ulta or Sephora. UDPP runs about 19 bucks, TFSI runs about 17.

Then for the face you can invest in a face primer (Urban Decay has fabulous ones) or you can settle for a home remedy...  Milk of Magnesia really does work wonders, the key is to apply a very small layer ...if you can see streaking across your face when it dries, you've put on too much.  Those who have drier skin can use Prep. H....again, thin layer.   For eyeliner staying in place....use something that says it is waterproof....the colorstay line is good...  follow this with concealer bumped VERY CLOSE to your eyeliner line, blend in well.  Powder with matching color foundation or translucent powder, this creates a barrier for the liner when your face/eye area becomes moist from the day.  Also, with a fine tip angle brush, apply a matching powder eyeshadow over top of your line...again, the powder absorbs the moisture.....oh, and probably stay away from liners that say "Kajal"....soft coal doesn't stay well.  Once you have applied your foundation, again powder the face...same reason as before.  If you do lipstick, there really is no trick...if you plan on eating, its going to wear off...just reapply.  You can use the lipstains, but they tend to be very slim in color choices.  Use a waterproof mascara....all of this works well for day to day makeup too if you have problems with oily-ness or creasing and the such.

I think this has been answered but for the higher end primers you can get things like Urban Decay Primer Potion and Too Faced Shadow Insurance from Ulta or Sephora.  I believe Revlon just recently came out with a base, but I've heard mixed reviews on it...  if you are only willing to spend a small amount, try it out (I hear, though, it tends to make the lids feel a little tight)...  Also, E.L.F. has a primer and from my understanding it is pretty decent too, considering E.L.F. is a company known for selling majority of their products for $1.  I think their site is eyelipsface.com.... I swear by my Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

Wow!! I wish I had found this thread before now.  You ladies are awesome!!  Now, I have to add my questions if you wouldn't mind helping me out.  First off, I am one of the non- glistening ladies.  I take several medications that cause excess sweating, and I am wrestling 5 kids all day,so I look like I have jumped ship and gone for a swim halfway through the day. Also, I am almost 35, and still break out like a darn teenager (no offense to any of you youngins). What is the best way to cover blemishes for the day?? I use Physicians Formula green concealer followed by dabing on cream foundation and then cover with powder foundation.  It looks ok before I leave the house, but throughout the day, it starts to look bad again. Also, does hairspraying your face make you break out? I was told that if you have trouble skin, try to avoid getting any hairspray on your face at all. I am really excited about trying the milk of magnesia trick next weekend.  Thanks for all your wonderful wisdom  :)

If you put the MOM on before ANY makeup, this will also help keep your concealers in place.  I, personally, avoid hair spray because I have sensitive skin and do break out easily...for me, that just irritates it more.  I stick with the MOM trick and ALWAYS finish with mineral powders.  You are already on the right track with your green concealer.  Know that you will not be able to take away the blemish's texture, only the coloring.  You can disguise it as best you can with color correcting and even dab a bit of a darker shade (about 2 shades darker than your natural coloring) to the TOP portion of the blemish...  this just plays with the light and draws away from where the blemish is raised and naturally catches light (if we weren't talking about pimples, that would sound right pretty! lol)

one other thing, don't brush or sweep on the concealers...  use a concealer brush, sponge applicator, or your clean finger to DAB it on and press into the skin area you are working with.  This will give you more coverage.  If you brush or sweep it, you're really doing nothing to help with what you are trying to hide.

A tip I haven't seen on this thread is to POWDER your LASHES before you mascara. It's just like when you're making fried chicken: you flour it before you put it in the egg and breading, so it sticks! Seriously, I hardly ever wear mascara (actually I only wear make up when I go somewhere REALLY fancy) but take a powder puff and put it in loose powder real thick, close your eyes and press the puff pretty hard against your lashes. Sweep away the excess that gets on your cheeks, and then mascara: the topside of the upper lashes, then the bottom side, then the bottom lashes. Sticks until you take it off!

Apologies if this isn't new, but Calamine lotion is another good primer on par with Milk of Magnesia.  I don't know what the latter feels like, but calamine is soothing if you have any sort of itchy or painful blemishes.

I found out about it from Mario Badescu drying lotion that I wear under my makeup sometimes, which is mostly just the pink stuff, so I went ahead and tried it too.

Is THAT basically what the MB drying lotion is?  I haven't read the ingredients, but I use that along with several other items to complete the skin care regiment...  well dang, if THATS all it is, I'll save me a nice chunk of $$

I know right?  Ends up, as unusual a product as it is (don't shake it up?  Just use the pink part?  WTH?) it is actually pretty simple to make at home. (http://www.ehow.com/how_5047017_make-mario-badescus-drying-lotion.html)  ;D

Ironic that this got pumped cause I was just trying to figure out what to do as far as makeup and sunscreen. I was thinking about mixing it and some of my liquid foundation  then powdering over it? I have no idea. In the long run I'd rather go sans sunscreen and risk it ( I know bad, bad!).

For sunscreen I'll apply my moisturizer first, then sunscreen- let it set a bit then apply a primer then the foundation (when I need it- but I'm trying to find a tinted primer that is light enough for my skin) then powder.  I have yet to have a sunburned face at Fest (even when I haven't worn my hat.)  Now the rest of me, well, I can't say the same!

I don't wear make-up. I use a moisturizer, sunscreen, and a light dusting of cornstarch to keep oil/sweat at bay. I have sensitive skin so anything else breaks me out. I'd rather wear nothing than wear tons of concealer to hide breakouts. I've found that a genuine smile works better than any amount of make-up for making you look great!

While that may be true, women who play certain character types are usually required to wear some form of make-up by the costuming directors of their faires.  Or if not required, then strongly encouraged.  Noblewomen and gypsies most commonly fall into that category.  That's why these little tricks can be so helpful.  There's nothing less "queenly" than a queen who looks blotchy or has make-up melting down their cheeks. :)

You know what? You're right. I wasn't even thinking from a cast view. I don't bother with it because I'm allergic to the preservatives found in most cosmetics, so I forget that some people really do need to wear it.

Has anyone tried using stage make-up? I used Ben Nye when I was in theatre and that stuff did not budge.

I apply sunscreen after moisturizer and before makeup. The trick is to let it really dry before applying anything else. I would recommend mixing sunscreen and makeup b/c that's going to dilute it. Also, I'm a fan of face-specific sunscreen. DHC makes a great one that goes on as a liquid but the neutrogena one is good too. Both are lighter than the stuff you put on the rest of the body so much easier to apply and feel better on the skin.

And I am also a big fan of the mineral makeups. For the past year, I've been using a Smashbox one that I like b/c it's just one powder and a big brush. I used to use Bare Escentuals but didn't like the feeling that I needed 3 or 4 different powders/brushes.

For touch-up, I keep a compact of the Clinique mineral flat powder that comes with a little sponge inside. It's very discreet and is easy to apply quickly to even out skin tone.

Admittedly I dont wear sunscreen on my face as often as I should as I tend to break out from it. I never even thought of getting face specific sunscreen. Major duh on my part lol.

Most makeup has SPF protection now but it is only the first layer, closest to your skin that does the protecting.  (Or so I've heard, anyway) so you should DEFINATELY wear a facial layer of sunscreen before you apply your makeup.  =)

Neutrogena makes an SPF100 specifically for facial use that is very lightweight, and has never caused me to break out (I have fairly sensitive skin) even with make-up over it. I wear it pretty much every day starting in late spring until late fall (or whenever I'm going to be exposed to lots of sunlight  :) )

Dont forget your chest and arms ladies they still get sun too.

Oh and

Has anyone figured out how not to get eyeliner to run like crazy? I would love to find one that doesnt make me look like a racoon any type that you love for its stay power?

This is the one that I usually use and I've had very few times where it has smudged or run on me. Its about $6 so it's a tad bit expensive but works really well.

I like to use Maybeline Waterproof Ultra Liner (liquid) at Faire.  It never runs- but it CAN flake off if you end up rubbing it.  If I opt for a pencil liner I try to remember to use a primer first and sometimes shadow over the liner but definately powder.  I don't have runny liner issues.
I LOVE to use a spray on sunscreen for reapplying to the exposed back, chest and throat but definately use a rub on sunscreen as the very first layer.  I'll apply it right out of the shower like lotion.  =)

I like Stila Smudge Pots for my eyeliner.  Once it is on and sets, it is THERE and doesn't move.  I've never had it run or smudge once it has dried.  A decent selection of colors, too.  It seems expensive at $20 per .14 oz, but a little goes a really, really long way on these.

Also, remember that sunscreen takes a bit of time to become effective, so it is important to apply it at least 20 minutes before you go out into the sun.  I usually put my first coat on post-shower / before I dress so that I'm sure I get everything (thin linen can let the sun through!), and then I do a second layer of spray-type once I get out to site.

I'm writing down all the brands to try for smudge proof eyemakeup.
The one thing I know is that Colorstay products by Revlon do not live up to their name. The liner smudges and the lipsticks wear off in the same amount of time regular brands do.
I use Visible lift products form L'Oreal with SPF 17, and never get face burns at faire. My bosom is another story, since I usually forget to sunscreen them till it's too late. :(

  Another makeup subject:
What style of makeup do you think is appropriate for different characters?
Natural looking or whiteface? Liners, shadows and lipstick colors? What do think goes with what?

I know it may be H/A, but I've never been a fan of whiteface. I just use my normal day-to-day makeup when I go to faire, except I put on my Oil of Olay facial sunscreen first.

And as far as eyeliner goes, I use the Covergirl one that is a soft pencil that you twist up as you go. I like it a lot and have never had problems with smearing. I usually use the CG lashblast mascara, too, though I bought Maybelline the last time, since it was cheaper - never again! Maybelline flakes smudges all over the place.

I like a simple, pale and natural look for the most part.  I am VERY pale skinned and won't tan so I play that up with powder.  I keep the eyeliner black and thin, a rosy blush on the apples of my cheeks only, but RED lipstick!  =)  But I usually portray a noble...  I'd probably keep everything very light and neutral if I were peasant or even pirate.  For a harlot or wench I would probably play around a lot more with color and heaviness.  As a fairy I feel that pretty much anything goes.  I like to be light and sparkly for sure, though!  =D

I play nobility or royalty so I tend to wear more makeup in those roles than I did when I was a peasant and went with a more natural look. I've always been REALLY happy with the Colorstay Liquid Lipstick. Its almost too difficult to get off some days, IMO. I've found the Maybelline Falsies waterproof mascara to stay on really well too....it takes me longer to get off than put on most days.

Our faire starts in the summer (August) and ends in the fall (October) so we go through weather extremes. In the hot weather, I usually dont do much foundation other than sunscreen since it gets sweated off quickly, but I usually go more dramatic eyes and lips -  kind of a more modern interpretation of the whiteface since that tends to just look comical at our event. I'll go for more foundation and a bit darker makeup when the temps cool though. Never any blush though, in faire shows or even day-to-day. I just dont prefer it.

I got a tip from the Tyra Banks show once that has worked well for me. Apply sunscreen and give it about 5-10 minutes or so to soak in. Then, use a cotton ball and apply a thin layer of Milk of Magnesia and let that dry for a few minutes as well before going on to the rest of the makeup. Really has helped me keep things in place (although you can get white streaks if its too thick). Its even lasted up to some warmer days last season.

(EDIT: Sorry, didn't mean to repeat what some others have said, now that I went back and re-read the entire thread! Consider this just a +1 to their tips then)

For eyeliner, I love to use the powdered variety. This is what I used for my wedding and it held up so beautifully that I started using it all the time. Someone mentioned the Stila pots and I think this is what it is, but I used a Bobbi Brown black eyeshadow. You just need a small eyeliner brush, wet it slightly, run it through the powder and then apply. Once it dries, it doesn't run!

My makeup is The All Natural Face (www.theallnaturalface.com) that I absolutely ADORE!  I break out from absolutely everything, including Bare Minerals, and this stuff is like gold. The gal who makes it has tons of shades and encourages sampling things before buying the full product.  It's a little pricey, but honestly, it lasts for six months or more for the main foundation, and longer for the other powders.  I'm so pale, it's a miracle I found something that didn't turn me yellow or orange. . .I hate being pumpkin colored.  For a full day, I wear a minimal amount of makeup, usually just my foundation and veil, but if it's a cooler day (as I sweat in a gross and disgusting way when it's hot) I use eyeshadow primer before applying a shimmer shadow. . .I find that it creases less than matte, and I use a lighter color as opposed to a darker, so any streaking is difficult to notice at the end of the day.  She also has a sealant spray that will hold your makeup steady and is also a hydration mist that you can use throughout the day.  Whatever you use, I'd say powder over cream, and avoid products with an abundance of wax, as it will melt as the day goes on.  Paper blotters are a saving grace, too, that you can use subtly and will reduce the oil on your skin without wiping off all of your makeup.

Phew, that was a lot of makeup talk! :)

New tip to add to the repertoire...

Along with the Milk of Mgnesia trick mentioned by myself and others earlier in the thread... If you are one of those like me that has those dark circles under your eyes, or perhaps blemishes you want to see disappear, then I highly recommend a product called  "COLORTRATION"  (www.colortration.com)

All it takes is literally a pinhead sized dab on the spot/circle in question and the dark spots disappear.  Apply your normal makeup as usual and enjoy.  If you layer too much you'll know it because the effect will look cakey.

They sell a wonderful tester kit for around $17 and you can choose the tester #s (six choices in all)that go within and these alone will last a LONG time if used correctly.  The actual bottled product is more expensive and requires that you take excellent care of the pump nozzle.  As a shortcut, I ordered 6 of the same shade I use, and they lasted me two years.

Your mileage may vary :)

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but I love Model in a Bottle. It's around 20 bucks on their website and it works wonders to keep your makeup in place. I can walk around in 90-something degree heat with it over my makeup and it really does stay put. I also like Urban Decay's eyeshadow primer, which was mentioned earlier in this thread. Found a recipe for making your own loose, powder foundation.

Mix arrowroot powder, cocoa powder and cinnamon.  Mix until you find the right tone.  Apply with a brush.

I made a small batch of this last night and am 'test driving' it to see how well it wears.  :)

    Bet that smells yummy!
    My concerns would be:

1) I'm pretty sure both cocoa powder and cinnamon stain the skin and get darker with moisture. You may end up with a blotchy face after a while.

2) Cinnamon may irritate your skin-It's caustic.   Hopefully you won't get any in your nose or mouth.

Let us know how that turns out; I'm always looking for natural alternatives to cosmetics.

I want to thank whomever recommended Urban Decay All Nighter spray to set makeup. (available at the Sephora counter inside JCP).
It's pricey, but you only need a tiny spritz to set your makeup, so a small bottle lasts forever.  It was designed to make club makeup last through a night of dancing and sweating.
I used it every day at faire, but even on  the hottest days my make up stayed where I wanted it, no smearing,  running, flaking or fading.  I did not need to touch up all day.
Tested this last season and will use it this year too!

I did a test of it because I read some women had adverse reactions to the cinnamon.  I'm thinking I may eliminate it because I didn't use much to begin with.  It may be in the mix for women with a darker skin tone.  I haven't seen anything in the reviews about staining but I will watch for that!

Sorry, but lead poisoning doesn't do it for me... LOL.  ;)

Nope, I tend to stick to my Loreal Paris base over the whole face, including eyelids and lips, powder to set, earth toned eyeshadow, eyebrow pencil for definition, and a bit of black eyeliner on the top of the eyelid, plus a touch of blush and lipstick (again, just a more defined version of my normal lip color, nothing harsh).

As a performer who gets photographed, I'd prefer to look polished, but not overly made up. Defining the features helps make a better picture, and also helps people see your face from a distance.

Skip the lead, egg white and arsenic!  ;D.    There are so many modern ways to safely get a 'period' cosmetic look, you don't need  to risk your health to achieve an HA appearance.
If you want to try it-go to your local costume shop or hobby store and buy some stage makeup.   However, wearing what amounts to white face, carmine lipstick, kohl, and rouge in the classic style is not for the faint hearted, and it would be hard to do without ending up looking like a clown.
Contemporary written observations of courtiers in similar makeup were for the large part not complimentary, so consider that when attempting something that by all accounts, makes you look gawd awful (and that's when it was done correctly).
Elizabeth I may have used lead into her dotage, but who's going to dis the Queen?

As Lady Rosalind said :  A natural base in a paler color with a good SPF, a touch of color for your lips and some eyeliner is all the average lady needs.   It would be what is expected of someone attending a faire in a casual mode.   You want to look finished without appearing tarted up, but   you do need some sort of feature definition to avoid being overwhelmed by an elaborate outfit and jewelry too.

I've never done makeup for myself. What do you think would work for me? You know me DC, and you always come up with great ideas...any suggestions? ...or just do without? (Some people think I'm scary looking enough as it is)

See, if you don't do an eye of Horus, I could totally see you doing smeared, runny eyeliner ala Floki on Vikings!   :)

I love Floki!  He is one of the most interesting characters on that show.  Merlin, you could totally pull that off. :)

I swear by Urban Decay's Primer Potion for eyes.  And I love their eyeliners, too.  Even the pencils have pretty good staying power.
I'm going to have to hunt some of this down before Fair starts again. Does it go on ok after sunblock?
