Title: What color skirt?
Post by: Lady Renee Buchanan on October 11, 2009, 09:00:00 PM
Here is a Pendragon bodice I own, except in brown suede.

Here are the current skirts I wear with it.

I would like to make a new skirt this winter for this before RenDezvous next year.  But I don't want another rust/brown/emerald green color scheme.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions of what colors might look nice with it.  I had thought of maybe a moss green, but I would like input from everyone.  Thanks!

Well, feh.  I was going to say russet!  ;)

What about that bright yellow from the Buchanan tartan?  Or tone it down with a mustard or saffron or gold? (People *always* say gold, don't they?  I just finished what is, essentially, a *hot pink* corset, and Milord looked at it and said, "Ooh, are you going to wear that with your gold skirt?"  ???)  Or scarlet?

What about chocolate brown or cocoa?  I admit I'm not crazy about the beigey color shown in the photograph.

ETA:
Oooh--crazy thought!  Now, this would fall squarely into Fairwear, so it may not be what you're looking for, but... what about a split overskirt in some chocolate brown microsuede to "match" the bodice, with forest green guards down the front and along the bottom... worn with your current russet as underskirt?  With your farthingale, of course.  ;D

I agree with Gem about mustard, saffron, and gold. Any of those colors would work beautifully with that bodice!

I thought yellows as well...  But if your corset is OK with a colour change in the skirt area, cherry red goes well with brown.

Gem, I looked at your "crazy thought" and almost fell off the chair laughing.  First, I think it's a brilliant idea.  So why did I laugh?  It was the image in my head that came when I read it!

I wrote that I am going to  *make* the skirt.  As you know, I have made 1 thing in my life - bloomers.  About a month ago.  And I posted my pictures on how they could fit Steve, and how I needed to have help from a friend.  All I could see was me trying to make a split overskirt with guards down the front and the bottom for my second attempt.  I had visions of me in a coma with pins stuck all over me, and that is why I laughed!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  Any others who want to post thoughts, please continue to do so.  I could make more than 1 skirt.  Maybe even someday - Gem's suggestion!     ;D

I like the idea of a blue, there are multiple shades which would work.

Here's a quick photo edit with blue, red and yellow skirt options (I apologize for the poor editing)

For some reason, I really like the idea of teal with it....  or even red. I just think that would be lovely

Lady R, seriously: you can do this.  Just don't sew up one of the skirt seams.  Voila: split skirt (well, you'll need to hem those edges, but still.).  For the "guards," go buy some green trim or ribbon or ready-made bias tape or *something* already made in the right color.  And a fabric glue stick.  Or better yet: some Steam-a-Seam, which is an iron-on, permanent fabric glue.  Can you iron?  ;)

I can PROMISE YOU that a skirt is a gazillion times easier than *any* kind of pants.

I agree with Rose, I think teal woul be a show stopper and bring out that georgous design on the Bodice even more.  And you can make a circle skirt they are so easy!    Just a few yards of fabric one seam up the back fold over to make a casing for elastic if you dont want to bother with a waist band and if you're lucky and your salvege edges are nice and fisnished looking you really dont even need to bother with a hem.  The casing would be hidden under your belt and bodice so no one would see. Easy Peasy!

You can do it!

Thank you, everybody, for your suggestions.  I love all the colors you mentioned.  Maybe I can make 3 skirts.  If I can make one, I can make 3!

Gem, I'm sure I can do it, but I'm a big chicken and at this point, I don't feel I have enough experience to do a split skirt - yet!  But if I can get a few skirts under my belt (no pun intended, honest!), then I probably will feel more confident to try.

*Renee digs through her Joanne sale brochures to find a good discount on fabric* ;D

Actually, I think a split skirt is easier than a regular skirt.  And I make mine double sided.
For a single side sew all panels together at the sides except for one, hem the bottom, stitch the waistband on.
For double sided sew all panels together at the sides except for one for both colors, (right sides together) sew bottoms and split edges together, turn, stich waistband on.  If you can make bloomers this is super easy! ;)
