Title: gift suggestions for mom
Post by: Auryn on November 06, 2009, 01:35:31 PM
I'm hoping someone here can help spark my brain.
My mother's 52nd birthday is at the end of the month.
I am at my wits end on what to get her, I have no idea.
I can't do jewelry as her and I both make jewelry and she doesnt really wear much of it.
She is a potter so she likes pottery but she likes uber expensive pieces.

I was thinking of making her a tooled leather purse but I'm afraid the weight of the material making her purse issues even worse (her purse weighs like 15lbs already).

As far as hobbies she is a potter, a bee keeper and a lover of orchids. I got her orchids for mother's day this year already.

I did the sentimental picture bit a couple of years ago for Christmass.
I gave her a gym membership one year and she went 4 times in 6 months.

She just bought herself perfume and some makeup about a month ago.

Thanks to anyone who is still reading.
I appreciate any suggestions.

Is she close enough to give her the gift of your time?
To spend a whole day doing whatever she wants.  Fix something in the house, including running for material?  Or take her on a "date".  Dinner, a movie, a run to the craft shop for jewelry making supplies.
Whatever she wants to do, or has to do.
If she doesn't need for anything material, then I can't imagine anything more special than just your time.
From a mom who always wishes she had more time to just spend one on one, and from a daughter who terribly misses her mom and just being able to simply spend time together.

Happy birthday to your mom!

Perhaps a series of spa treatments? A booklet of prepaid spa treatments that she can book at her leasure. A massage one week, maybe a couple pf manicures and pedicures. A new haircut and style or a facial. We have a spa here that offered an incredible deal on a pakage like that. Pick the right spa and they'll pamper her with champagne too.

Thank you for the suggestions ladies.
I actually live about 2 miles away from my mom and I see her everyday as we work in the family business together. We spend at least 2 hrs together in the car every day in our commute. Its usually just her and I so we gossip and talk about everything.
We also do art shows together and go to bead shows (just the two of us) a couple of times a year.

Anna, my brother gave her 2 massage sessions for her birthday last year, she used one but never used the second ( I think she didn't like the place much thats why she didn't go back, they were snotty to her because she used a gift certificate). She doesn't like ppl touching her nails, hand or feet, so no manis or pedis for her.  ::)
She is so difficult and weird I know  ;D

The thing she hates most is cooking dinner- she just doesnt feel like it anymore after 30 years of cooking for everyone. Aside from getting her a chef once in a while which I can't afford, think there's anyway I could help with that??

Since you said she doesn't enjoy cooking you might look into something like this

Why not sit down, and write her a long letter. Tell her how much you love her, appreciate her, and what an inspiration she has been to you.

I've face the same dilemma myself.  There's really nothing that mom needs.  My solution to this is to start giving "experiences" ~ tickets to a show she'd like to see, a trip into the city (she won't drive herself there), etc.  If my mother were the adventurous type, I'd take for things like a ride in a hot air balloon, scuba lessons, a day out for horseback riding.  Take along a camera and document the whole thing.  It's something she'll never forget, and pictures of it will bring smiles for many years to come without cluttering up the house with more "stuff" or gift certificates she'll never use.

Good luck!
