I've been looking at this camera for a little while and it seems like a great camera. I love the smile/blink feature and the variable angle screen. I've seen good reviews on it, but figured I'd ask here to see if anyone knows if it's worth getting or not. I've been using a Fujifilm Finepix s5000 for about 7 years, and love it, but need an upgrade.
Here's is a review from dpreview.com...
Nikon Coolpix p90 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q109superzoomgroup/)
And one from dcresource.com...

Thanks, NB, you just made my choice harder lol. No really, I still seem to like the coolpix. The Kodak camera in that review looked great also.
Thanks for the links ;D

Since the Kodak has a Hot Shoe to allow using a "
real" Flash, and it runs on easily available AA NiMH Batteries instead of a proprietary Lithium battery, I'd recommend the Kodak Z980. (This is coming from someone who's shot with Nikon cameras since 1983 ... FE2 SLR - 1983-2009; D90 DSLR since June of 2009.)
Make sure you post some pictures, whichever camera you decide on! ;D

Thank you, David. I'll look at the camera and check it out. I will definitely post some pics after I get the new camera ;)
Well, they don't have a Foot-In-Mouth icon ::) but I probably need one. ;)
I recommended the Kodak based on its specs in the first table of that review, rather than reading the whole article, and seeing that the reviewer wasn't very impressed with the image quality. Sooooo, while it does have good specs, I'd definitely recommend that you get your hands on several of the "Super-Zoom" point-n-shoots and compare their image quality before actually spending ~$400 on a new camera.
To the list of $370-$450 cameras he reviewed, you can add the Samsung HZ25W and Casio Exilim EX-FH20 to try out.

Thanks, DB. I will definitely check those out. I'm hoping to get to Best Buy next week and check some out. They don't have a huge selection at the walmart here and best buy is about an hour away. Hard to get there with work. So, I've mainly just been checking out pics taken by these cameras on the review websites.
I'll let you know what I choose :)
While I was at Fry's Electronics (http://www.frys.com/category/Outpost/Cameras/Cameras/Digital+Cameras/Point+&+Shoot/) today, I checked in the Camera Department and asked about the "Super-Zoom" Point & Shoots that they carry. There were three on display that all had 20x Zoom Lenses - Canon SX20 IS (~$370), Sony DCR HX1 (~$500), Canon SX1 IS (~$530).
From looking at reviews of which Point & Shoot comes closest to DSLR performance and image quality, it appears that the Fujifilm FinePix S100fs (~$450 (http://www.digitalrev.com/en/fujifilm-finepix-s100fs-digital-camera-2900.html)) is at the top of the list because of its large sensor size. It only has a 14.5x Zoom, but the image quality is top-notch. Do not be tempted to get the newer FinePix S200EXR, because Fuji put a small sensor in that one, and it's image quality suffers.

Ok, did even more researching now. I liked some of the features of the nikon Coolpix. I did look at the Fujifilm since that's what I've been using the last 8 years. It was pretty good. But then I came to the Canon and fell in love. I love the fact that it records videos in hd, it has the fully rotatable screen. It also has blink detection which is what I liked about the Nikon. It also has a hot shoe which is nice. It takes very high quality pictures and videos and it falls into my price range. Even better is the BestBuy in Midland 45 minutes away has some in stock. So if I'm really nice to hubby, maybe he'll pick it up for me tomorrow before my favorite pipers EJ and Lyric make it out here.
Thanks so much for your help, David. I'm sure I would've been satisfied with the Nikon, but I think the Canon is the right choice for me. If I get it tomorrow, I'll be posting bagpipe pics tomorrow night ;)

I see on the Best Buy web site that the Canon Powershot SX20 IS (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+PowerShot+12.1-Megapixel+Digital+Camera+-+Black/9455127.p?id=1218107269974&skuId=9455127) comes with a set of 4 Alkaline AA Batteries.
To see whether you might want to use one of the rechargeable alternatives, take a look at this article written by a professional photographer: KenRockwell.com - All about Batteries (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/batteries.htm). That article is a couple of years old, and there are some newer types of NiMH batteries available, like the low self-discharge Sanyo Eneloop AA's. They don't have the highest initial mAH rating of the NiMH type batteries, but since they don't quickly self-discharge like other NiMH's, they're worth considering.
Also, if you get a SDHC Memory Card for your camera, make sure your current Memory Card Reader supports SDHC. It's worth investing in a Memory Card Reader (or a USB Jump Drive) that works with SDHC cards, so you can transfer your shots without having to connect a cable to the camera and run the batteries down while transferring the images.

I went with the Canon. My husband picked it up from BestBuy yesterday. I actually like using the AA batteries, I always forget to charge the rechargeables. I already had a SD card that works perfect and my computer has a SD slot. I took some pictures of EJ Jones, Lyric Todkill, and Dean Atkinson from a St. Andrews day celebration at church. I think they turned out really good for using no flash.

Thanks again for all your help, David!
Nice Shots! Which Church was that ceremony held at?
On a couple of the shots, the exposure meter got fooled by the fairly bright wall behind the musicians, and a fill flash would have been nice (if you weren't in Church ... ;) ).

St Mary's Episcopal Church here in Big Spring.
Thanks!
Yeah, that's what I figured. I didn't want to use a flash in church though lol.
If you're really interested in getting the P90, Ritz is going to have these on sale as one of their Black Friday "door busters" deals.... ;)
Just adding a little note: if you have somewhat shaky hands, be sure and get a camera that has the stabalizer! ;)
