Farthingale

I'd like to get a farthingale. The lower the price, the better, as long as it's of decent quality. Any suggestions?

I purchased mine from an eBay seller who's name escapes me at the moment.I know it was listed as a bridal store ~ Angel's something, IIRC~  The garment is of good quality cotton,  and I believe the hoops are removeable for washing (but I haven't tried it yet). The price was under $25 including shipping. I'll be sure to give you the seller's info when I can

The hoops are removable, so the fabric can be tossed into the washing machine, and because it comes with the ruffles, you can probably get away with not wearing a petticoat.

Just a word of warning on the Angel's Bridal - I just got my latest one from them and the top hoop is not the size it it has been on the previous sets I have purchased (yes, I know they are adjustable but even completely expanded it hugs my hips) - I am in mid commmunication with them, but since they only give the indication of the bottom circumference there really isn't anything "wrong" with the one they sent me, I don't have high hopes. 

It is a good quality cotton, and the hoops are removable.

I had the same issue, being blessed with ample hips myself ~ I took out the top hoop and it fits quite comfortably now

I am in need of a new hoopskirt and for whatever reason, I'm rather intimidated to try making one myself so I need to purchase a new one.  I have 3, actually, but none of them are of a natural fiber so they *can* get warm to wear.  I may look into getting one from the bridal site...  looks like a great price for one made of cotton!

Bumping up this topic, because I think I'll need a new farthingale before the summer.  I am not a sew-er, even though I'm a sew wannabe.

So, for those of you who have purchased from Angel's bridal since this thread was started, what do you think of your farthingale?

I was looking at the 4 hoop skirt.  Those whose hips it didn't fit, about how wide does it go?  When I was only 16, the doctor told me I had good hips for childbearing.  Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but my kids did pop out.  lol  So I am amply blessed in the hip department, too.

And anyone else who has one, who may or may not have been on the forum when this thread was started, I'd love to hear your experiences.

I live in Southern California and got mine at a store for Quinceañeras(sp?). It was about $15 and i believe it has 3 hoops in it, maybe four i cant recall at this moment. Anyways I found that the accessories at stores for Quinceañeras seem to be slightly cheaper than those at bridal shops but depending on your location this may not be possible. I personally love mine to death it stays cool and doesn't get misshapen even after the pain i usually put it under. It might not be as great of an option for taller women ( I am only 5'2) because they are made for teen girls.

Lady Renee: It must be a Buchanan gene, I got the same comment at 16 but by my grandmother who nearly fell over when I said I didn't want kids!

Needs some cleaning and fixing, but wow, who could pass that one up!

I have 2 Farthingales I wear. One is a 40+ year old Silk one I bought 9 years ago in Minneapolis at a Second Hand Vintage Clothing Store. Washes up nicely.

The second one I made in 2005 for my Mary, Queen of Scots gown. I use a durable Cotton Drapery Weight Broadcloth Lining, 6 panels sewn together, with 3 to 4 rows of Bias tape binding for the boning channels, then the hooping. The waists are drawstring to accomodate waist and hip sizes.

I charge $85 for a custom made Farthingale, but they will hold up for many years.
