I got started on my Alice in Wonderland cancan skirt this weekend.  The two skirts are cut & sewed, but I had to put darts in each panel of the waist because I way overestimated the amount of upsizing I would need - actually, I needed NO upsizing.  I'll pencil that into the pattern.  I've got to get cracking - there's only a little over two months till the movie comes out.  Where the heck did the time go?

I also need to decide if I'm taking Mamma Gkika out for a spin when Phil Foglio comes to town in late March at ComicPalooza so I can finish up the bits & pieces - waistband, bodice modesty panels, and make gloves and jewelry.  There's too much to do!

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and that the New Year brings you peace & happiness.

If you get a chance, see Sherlock Holmes.  The clothing is spectacular with some nice steamy props.  I fell in love with Watson's dinner jacket.

Saw SH today. I wasn't that impressed with it. I also thought the costumes lacking. While Rachel McAdams had a nice couple of dresses, they were not that great and Watsons Fiance's dresses were really lacking. I am looking forward to The Wolfman and those costumes and to Young Victoria. While Young Victoria is NOT Victorian/Steampunk, the dresses I have seen for it are jaw dropping.

I think the problem was the clothing covered a little too much in the way of time period.  My dad and I were discussing it over Xmas, trying to pinpoint the time from his description of the trailer (I had not yet seen movie or trailer).  We came up with 1890.  Then, seeing movie last night, I saw everything in styles from 1860s to almost 1900s.  Putting that aside (someone mentioned to treat it like "A Knight's Tale"  - fun, if you overlook the inaccuracies) I enjoyed it enough I'd like to see it again when it hits the $1 theatres.  Husband, daughter and I all wore Steam-type Victorian and had lots of cell phone cameras pointed our way in the lobby!

I thought it was an okay movie.  I will see it again when it comes out on dvd.
There are many places where compromise is expected;
LOYALTY is not amongst them.

Can anyone give me some information about Watson's dinner jacket?  The style is so elegant and my son's giving me a little noodge (although the powers know I am not a tailor.)

Well here is a pin point in the movie.

Tower Bridge is being built. It is not complete but the tower structure is there but not all the way across. Tower Bridge was started in 1886 and finished in 1894. SO with this simple deduction Watson.. we can determine that 1890 is very close. NOW for the costuming. Fashion does not always take. Holmes dressed like a bum. Not what I ever took Holmes to look or dress like. The Dresses were very lacking and didn't show case clothjng like other movies even action based.

My and Toki's other grip was Robert Downey Jr. Fine actor but he could NOT keep an English accent if he tried. The role of Holmes should have gone to a British or British Isle actor instead. Ray Finnenes (sp) Mark Strong would have been a better choice for Holmes instead of Lord Blackwood) And IF you really wanted to stretch the accent Hugh Jackman. But these are just my oppinion.

I'll just ad my two cents here. While I haven't seen SH yet I was quite enamored with the costumes. When I see a movie and hear people afterword saying things about the clothing being 40 years out of date or talking about historical inaccuracies I always have to point out that in most cases the film wasn't trying to be 100% historic in the first place especially if it's Action Adventure or Fantasy.

I DID have a problem with Knight's Tale beacuse I don't like blatently modern things thrown in where they don't belong. So if Sherlock starts singing "We will rock you" or better yet sings a Rick Asley song.. I'm out.
but, I'm not going to fret over a 20-40 year gap in clothing which 99% of the population wouldn't notice or care about it.

However, that's just my humble opinion on things like that. I can certainly see how inaccuracies in any form can be annoying when you can spot them a mile away. :) I for one can't tell the difference between clothes from 1840 and 1890.

Sorry to post here, but have to let people know.  I will not, as planned, be going down to Ikkicon.  Message to follow:

Dearest all - It's hard to have to have all of you see it here, but FB and the groups are going to be the easiest way to let everyone know.  There is
no true way to cushion the blow, so I'll just be my usual Capt. Marga self.

Christopher (Curran), my husband, passed away this morning.  He died at work, possibly from a seizure or heart attack related to such.  The Med. Ex is doing an autopsy to be sure, and then he will be cremated.  I have given permission for whichever of his organs/tissues to be donated for use wherever possible.

Instead of flowers, please make a donation to RESCU or to St Jude's Childrens hospital, or the charity of your choice.

A memorial for family will be held soon, and we'll remember him at Faire later.

I'll be watching emails, and will accept phone calls, but please remember I'm going to be busy taking care of paperwork/medical issues for a while.  I DO have someone here with me, and Capt Marga is in charge at the moment.  Don't worry, I've eaten, I've cried, and I've priv'd.

Hugs to you all, my family of blood and choice.

Leah, I'm so sorry to hear of Christopher's passing.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Please do continue to take care of yourself and accept help when offered.  God be with you, my dear.
