Got faerie dust?

Laird Fraser of Lovatt

We need some rain, SOON, or it will turn out like 2011...no campfires or BBQ grills.

Grimes/Waller County has put a burn ban into effect. :-\

It does look like the weather will break in the next week or so, though.

Galveston county has a burn ban also.  We will be getting water restrictions soon if something doesn't change.  Smokers,  please don't throw your cigarette butts on the ground.  We don't need any wild fires!

Double 'like'
Where I am in North MS this week, they have had a burn ban in effect for a month now. I personally never complained about the rain this spring even though it killed all of my business. I despise the oppressive heat more than the rain.

Interesting. Fraser declared rain needed to happen...rain happened. Someone find him, he's in good with the lord and I want to give him a medal!
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I'm reserving judgment , Rani, until I hear how it goes this year.  Last year had a theme but this seems to be more of a free-for-all, which may turn out quite well.

*Still think a Viking Meade Hall would be the way to go.  IMO*

I think a Meade Hall would be a truly wonderful thing, as well, Fraser (although it would have to be cider for me)!  lol  Particularly if they didn't charge a cover just to get through the doors...

But from what I've been reading about this after hours thing, it sounds like it's going to follow the weekend themes, themselves, and it says that either garb/costumes or formal wear is "highly encouraged", and that the mgmt reserves the right to deny admittance based on dress... so no street clothes, apparently.  It also says it will be 21 or over, but that everyone is encouraged to wear either a mask or face paint... and I'm not really sure mgmt has thought that one out completely...  I mean, the way some kids look these days they could paint their faces and put on a corset, doublet, ballgown or a tux and easily pass for an older sibling with no problems.  (it's all those growth hormones in that TX beef... ;) )

Still... I do think it would be much nicer to just have a really big open-sided tent with a bunch of camp tables, a stage area for anyone who could be convinced to play, and a bar with a couple of things on tap (cider being one, please!).  And maybe a couple of things to eat, just so it could be all ages, at least until around 11pm, or so.  A pub, basically... and it would make FAR more money than their "exclusive" fancy dress parties will ever bring in.  At the end of the day, if we could all stay in garb, or change into fresh garb, even, and go hang out at the pub with all of our friends, instead of running all over the campgrounds trying to see everyone, it would give us all more time to actually SHOP and watch shows during the day, since most of us are trying to our best to be in 3 different places at once all weekend long, just so we can see everyone, and we hardly ever have time to see or do all of the things we had planned.  Like shop...  :D  lpl

Take note, Terre!  An open-air pub in the campgrounds would make LOTS of money, and be a much more popular social gathering spot for after hours than an exclusive (the very nature of the word makes people feel unwelcome) themed party.  After all, that's the sort of thing the Romans did, and look how they ended...  ;)  Really, though... people will readily keep spending money after hours if they have something to drink, something to nibble, a dry, relatively comfortable place to sit, and entertainment... especially if they can continue to do it in garb, and it doesn't cost any more to get in than everyone has already paid.  We don't want Faire to end after dark, but we still want to be with all of our friends, and while most everyone would spend the extra $20 (and likely a whole lot more, for some) for drinks, a bit of food and some entertainment for the evening... spending that just to get through the door, after paying for Faire tickets for the weekend and all the other expenses that go along with it, is going to convince most people to just stay in camp and enjoy the evening... or simply do the same thing we've been doing for years, and go walkabout, and visit all of the people we didn't get to see on the inside.  But with a place we could all get together and sit for a while... I'm sure the money would flow as swiftly as the cider!

Anyone else in here agree?  I know Terre stops in here once in a while and reads.

Me wee Nana had a touch of the "gift" and I can "feel" the weather changing.

Fraser's Forecast...One or two more bad heat days but we are over the hump.  Yesterday's 106 was the last slap in the face from Summer as it fades toward a wet & cool Autumn.  Most burn bans should be lifted within the next two weeks.  I have a feeling that El Nino is going to make this faire season "interesting".

Heck, Rani...an open sided log pavilion with a large fire pit or two in the middle...rough cut tables and benches...throw some hay on the floor and some logs to use as individual seats.

Ta Da!  Viking Meade Hall.

Set up a short wood rail fence around it, to help with crowd control and card everyone.  It would make another meeting place where us "commoners" could congregate and socialize...and not have to deal with the younguns at the bonfire.  Put it back in the woods...one of the new areas down the hill from where McShug/BS/PR/Time Warp pitch camp.  It's attraction would be more for the old school/die hards...basically, the clans and older folk.  You could even rent it out to a large enough group...and have it open Friday night as well.

Just an idea I've been kicking around the brainpan for a few years now.  ;)
